What challenges do voters face today?
In this episode of The HUB, we spoke with Ralph Watkins, Vice President with League of Woman Voters of Maryland (LWVMD) about voting rights in America, from the founding of the republic to the present day. We examine the constitutional amendments, laws, court cases, and social movements that shaped the voting landscape, as well as the barriers and obstacles that voters still encounter. We also discuss the importance of voting and civic engagement, how we can protect and expand our democracy, and the current issues and debates around voter ID laws, voter registration, vote by mail, gerrymandering, and election security

This week on Capital Workspaces presents The HUB we speak with Michele Joseph, CEO of SGAP Leaders. SGAP Leaders’ programming provides opportunities for motivated underserved students to develop leadership and critical 21st century skills needed for college and career readiness.
Michele tells how a cancer diagnosis and trip with her son and some of his friends to the United Nations made her think deeply about her value to her community and what she wanted to achieve. During this time, Michele also began to notice how her son's school curriculum undervalued the students’ ability to think critically, problem solve creatively, and lead empathetically. She believes that these skills are synonymous with success. Furthermore, she believes that every student has the capacity to positively impact their communities and ultimately the world, yet underserved students may not be given the opportunity to do so.
Hence, she founded SGAP Leaders.
"Joseph attained her MBA in strategy and marketing from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, and her BSc in Biology/Environmental Sciences from Catholic University of America. She taught marketing, public relations, and entrepreneurship to high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Dot was introduced to art and art education by her mother and grandmother, both of whom were artists: "My mother had a wonderful sense of design. She taught me that art can have deep personal meaning. From my grandmother I learned that I can make art anywhere and nature is a worthwhile subject. Many other teachers have helped me along the way as well." Dot also shares with us how her love of color fuels her passion and drive to continue making art. "The more colors, the better."

Toni Ghazi is a Real Estate Agent in DMV who serves the International Local Communities. Paul Medina has been running Capital Energy Training for 6 1/2 years and has been in the profession for 14 years. He has developed strength, mobility, flexibility programs for all ages from athletes to working professionals and everything else in between. He has a BS in Kinesiology from Towson U with multiple certifications from FMS, NASM, Neurokinetic Therapy and Brookbush Institute Human Movement Science. He has played High School baseball at DeMatha, collegially at Hagerstown CC and The Ohio State U where his career ended with an injury to his face. Vincent Desert is a 26 year old musician living in Bethesda Maryland. After spending some time in the Marine Corps, he relocated to Maryland to finish his schooling. He briefly spent some time working full time as a musician and has performed in front of thousands of people in theater halls and released his music across all streaming platforms. Now Vincent is working part time at Capital Workspaces while still recording and releasing music full time.

Scott Sedar is a local artist, teacher, and actor whose oil paintings or watercolors have been published in the Washington Post, grace the homes of his patrons, and are now - we are honored to say - featured in the hallways of Capital Workspaces.
Scott's art and artwork adopts the neorealist tradition by focusing on portraying society and the world around us in all of its honesty: "Art is a social phenomenon. We share the larger, social context of Art, the greater field in which I work. Art is yours and mine. In a very real sense, it’s up to you, my patrons, to say, to define it. " - ScottHe has served as Teaching Artist with The John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts for over 18 years, working at various schools throughout the DMV and performing community outreach. Pizzeria Paradiso has become an institution for wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza and craft beer in the Washington DC area since 1991. Owned and operated by chef Ruth Gresser, this DC classic is best known for its delectable crust, fresh ingredients, and passion for quality customer service.
Tony Strowd Hamilton has with Pizzeria Paradiso for over 13 years, progressing from Server all the way to becoming the General Manager of first the Hyattsville, MD location, followed by the Spring Valley location.
In his tenure with the company, he has worked at all of her current 4 locations, starting in Dupont Circle, then helping at the Georgetown location, followed by the grand opening of the Hyattsville MD location, and finally opening the newest Spring Valley location in 2018.
Tony also has a background in theater. He earned a degree in Dramatic Arts from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has been pursuing theater and acting while working with Pizzeria Paradiso. He is also a frequent performer at the North Carolina at Virginia Renaissance Fairs
When we asked about his career at Pizzeria Paradiso and what set it apart from other restaurants in the area, Tony shared that "the care and consideration that Pizzeria Paradiso has for its staff, as well as the community at large" is one of reasons it has become a DC mainstay.

Maria Leonard Olsen is a biracial woman whose parents were forbidden by law to marry in their home state of Maryland in the early 1960s.
She is the mother of two, a commercial litigation attorney, journalist and author of two adult nonfiction books and two children's books. She leads writing/empowerment retreats for women, hosts the “Becoming Your Best Version” podcast and is a co-host of the Inside Out radio show on WPFW-fm, 89.3, in Washington, D.C.

Alex Koller is a speech pathologist and owner of Bumblebee Pediatrics.
Alex grew up in Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree in Communications Sciences and Disorders from Penn State University and her masters in Speech Pathology from the University of Pittsburgh. She began her career by working as a graduate student clinician in numerous hospitals and in 2017 moved to the DMV and began work as a speech pathologist at St. Coletta of Greater Washington.
In January, Alex founded Bumblebee Pediatric Therapy a therapeutic practice based in the Washington D.C. area for children age 18 months to 18 years with communication challenges. Alex's experience from both a clinical and in-school setting has allowed her to craft her own "play-based" approach to Speech and Language Therapy:
"Play is the basis for all childhood development. Mr. Fred Rogers said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood”. Therapy is most successful when delivered in a play-based naturalistic way.
