My goal is to make you love music more! Join me for an easy-to-follow music, audio, and songwriting adventure, built for musicians and music-lovers alike. Basically an ELI5 for music.
Some musicians do better with chaos. Others under deadlines and with teams. Tristan Clopet is a rare pro who’s done both, and because of it knows the value of working towards a greater goal with a big team (and bigger pressure).
Tristan’s prolific work on film and TV scores gives him a deep insight into the nature of that side of the industry (and how different it is from his touring days supporting X Ambassadors, Billy Bragg, Tove Lo, Glen Hansard, and The Weeknd). It’s a collaborative, deadline-oriented, large effort, with hundreds of creatives contributing to the final work. He shares how inspiring that journey is, and how knowing the boundaries can unlock even more creativity. I loved his story about scoring to Martin Freeman’s solo acting in a car. (Martin Freeman happens to be one of my favorite actors.)

An apt question. Flowing from A to B, It’s timbre thing. A function for this music. A mix of craft and art. Room to play with. An array of options. Conveying goals. 🎬

As producer and multi-instrumentalist, he brings perspective to the drum kit, electronics to the acoustic, and vibe to the studio. Chef Harry T is a drummer/producer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/chef/tall guy based in the Los Angeles area. He likes to do lots of stuff, including play for Still Woozy, make silly funk jams, write serious love songs about personal development and feelings, push the boundaries of sandwich possibilities, learn new Spanish vocabulary, and stretch out his sore little legs. He also REALLY likes to make music with his best bud Eli Goss, who will join us in the interview at some point, in their best-friendship-band of over 10 years called The Breathing Effect, which basically makes complex-yet-familiar bangers with influences ranging from ambient noise music to 70s Japanese city pop and yacht rock to 2000s indie rock and softcore songwriters.

Feel the momentum. Satisfying to like understand. In these ways that create new things. It’s this very symbiotic relationship. Like foundations of being. Kinda shape. So tactile. Brings the energy. Palpable. So nice to know. Like gravity and also like seasonings. Just kinda go for it. The show must go on, the show must go on. A deeper way of relating to art and humans and just the ways things are connected. Feel like the overtones are really ringing out. Also pushing boundaries. The chemical makeup of the music itself. Kinda newer golden age of recording almost. Sources of inspiration. Is like of the time. That dramatic surprise. Everything’s a new adventure. This visceral reaction thing. Totally scalable. Not waiting around. Kinda fascinating to just see. Sorta new like methodologies. At the source. Down the line. Like using audio. The musical vibe out there in the ethos. As far as like tone goes and stuff. In certain settings. Like a metric modulation. Such a pleasure. This parasympathetic reactive quality. Within the broader production. First things first. Be doing stuff. Finish stuff. To keep the momentum going. Play into the effects. Sounds vibey. A various array. Have the ears. So many people do so many things. Sense of like space. It’s just a beautiful thing. Pretty excellent. To facilitate the connection between people. A whole vast new room of stuff to explore. Like peeling back the secrets of the universe. 🥯

Josh Plotner is a producer, recording artist, composer, arranger, contractor, and saxophonist/woodwind multi-instrumentalist with a collection of over 150 instruments. Josh also performs internationally as a soloist for 'Avatar the Last Airbender: Live in Concert' on 10 instruments, including flute, duduk, and Chinese woodwinds. Opening up doors for that which is imperfect. Embodied creativity. Start to get a sense. The frequency of the standing wave. Wide and expansive. A vibrating column. Building on similar things. That embellishment tradition. As people. An intuitive understanding, an embodied understanding. The coolest thing ever. Easy to keep going. Forever value. All the cool flashy stuff that’s fun. Basically all of these flutes. Hollow sticks with holes. The cool leaves. Calmer, more intentional, more intelligent person. Learning ornamentation. All the different notes. A woodwind generalist. He has created and supervised music across global campaigns including work for the Super Bowl, Olympics, Grammy’s Oscar’s, Emmy’s, and Presidential Elections. In 2018, Mike was named one of Billboard's Top Branding Power Players. He has been an international music delegate around the world at music festivals and conferences in Denmark, Amsterdam, Israel, Brazil, Mallorca and more. Prior to joining Droga5, he was a Music Producer at McCann for nearly seven years, where he provided music for clients, such as Microsoft, the United States Army, Verizon, MasterCard and more, across the agency’s roster. Mike received his first film credit managing the music supervision for an indie film, Tracktown, which premiered at the LA Film Festival in 2016. Sprinkle on something. It’s like, relax. If all we have is time. It was everything. It was wild. Find that new shirt. Kick off this whole cycle of feeling good. Wanna do cool stuff. Figure out what’s the best approach. Kinda rinse and repeat. The structure and the changes within a song. Chasing the dragon. Ideate. Transference. Aware. All of that. Chasing that thing. Keeps that carrot. A song can unlock that. The creative vibe. Can do this. Listen to everything. The consistency thing. That can endure. A great song plus time. Some cooler direction or genre. Coalesced into this moment. Being in the record store. It sounds strange now. Back into the show. Is when it’s really music is telling the story, A bunch of things in play. Cool crate digger. Recontextualized and repurposed and reimagined and brought to life. Hit the airwaves. Boom. A high-wire act. 🌉

Mechanisms at play. This ephemeral intangible thing. Drifting in between dream and reality. Cuts both ways. The collection of musical thought into physical mediums. The ways that they interact. Wrapped up in the other. Different ways of classifying. It evokes something else. It’s own sort of inspiration. A powerful force in both directions, Dance with it. The map. The levers that are like really cool. Coextensive. A species of classifiers. Unabashedly of the body. This branch. That analytical processing of organizing and sorting. All of this different stuff. A subtle sway or a rhythmic blinking. 🗄️

Excitement, pleasure, and purpose all in one. A wave and an energy to it. Soaking it up. Mixing at the source. Meticulous about tones. Hash it out. Like a fun journey. Map stuff out. Important to end on a good note. Riding that energy, finding that energy. Beautiful places all around. Music is a natural rhythm. Feels good to be excited. Keep that going. Bombastic and organic. Momentum on a record. Pulling through. Continual and everlasting. Magic about that interpersonal. 🌌

What makes records happen. Stuff like that to make things interesting. Within the air. Sit there with a fader. Change what that equation is. The blend of analog digital. Direct injection. It can be the momentary answer. All feeling based. The language into the choices. Make the song whatever that means. Variances in terms of the like frequency makeup. Can remember these moments. Everyone’s doing everything. An aesthetic guide. Balling on the train. The change in proximity effect. The intention of the player in an incredibly compelling way. Slammed to the volume. On the way in. Within a word. Within a song. Intimate and interesting and unique sounding. Immensely connective and profound moments. Slight variances. About the stuff that gets recorded. One of those little lightbulb moments. It forces character. Help shepherd it. Thinking like a musician at every step of the process. Getting cooking. Enjoy the conversation. Willing to go there. Volume riding. Feel purposeful and feel connected to the world. A profoundly exciting thing. The way that those records sound. Music was kinda the one thing. Through pure aesthetic. It absolutely does. Comb filtering resonance sweeps stuff. Emotional response to the things. Make that choice make sense from a musical perspective. Colors the sound. Everything’s important. It’s brilliant. Based on a few of those factors. Oscillate between feeling. Particularly the vocals. You can color outside of that box. Squashed in a cool way. Like it’s all music making, obviously. Reverse engineer by hearing this stuff. It all happens together. Within voltages. From the same tool chest. Measuring the height of the building. 🏢

Grasp and glom onto. Sometimes these things come together. Every note. Recombine them in a way. It is possible. Unique and fresh. Every single step. Furniture history. Full on. It’s that fusion. Enough to get it. That precipice, the edge. Does have something to it. That initial energy that initial burst. Color around it. Token anticipation. Good luck. Areas of gravity. That’s another, just, means to make it matter. Continuing on, that kind of energy. Also repetition. Step into shoes. Alternative percussion. Alternative broadcast. Coming in and out to highlight. Just smile a little bit, from the song. That mentality shift. Even if it’s goofy. Inspired when inspired by the song itself. For an unknown reason. Tempo fluctuations. Trust that gut, and then develop that gut, by doing it over and over and over and over again. Enjoy the show. The emotional frame. 🥕🥒

Stop confusing creativity with your craft! You practice to clear the path for the muses, and when the muse arrives, you get out the way and run with them.
I’ve thought a lot about this tension while doing the guest pods with far more successful (and far more organized) mixing engineers than I. But we all have our own ways of doing it. Maybe by hearing my way, you’ll be inspired to try some new paths.
To practice for practices sake. And to leave practice at the door when it’s time to be an artist.
To use music theory as an (incredible) tool, but not as a crutch or a map.
And to work on your craft as often as possible, especially in those moments when you don’t feel inspired. I think that will help us both Love Music More!

What that does to the feeling of the music. Concerned with efficiency on a level. So many beautiful things. A digital understanding of an analog electronics circuit. Breaking it up into little pieces. It’s wild the amount of information that we have. Get right down to the part where you’re doing the sorta expression. From the musician’s standpoint. Tools that make more confident to express. Variable. Reveals the mentality. Be careful when you stop listening. The bridge to the users of the tools. Shines the best way it can. To feel something beyond. Use math to understand. Simplify and make things just only what you need like right up front. Tools that make more confident to express. Get sunshine in. Find a cool new tool, it inspires a new thing. Poke dots. Can get in the flow. A very different set of ears to wear. Try stuff. Any little creative slight differences that you wanna make. Multiple ways to do. The granularity. Uninterruptedly fast. Still doing it. ☊☄

More aware of what the power spots are in hearing. Often inspired by just how something might sound. Kinda an inquiry into what’s a sounds’ potential. Cross-functional and cross-medium. Use of those tools. Perceptions of discrete elements. Pairs other perceptual modalities. Provides access to music. A whole big branch. The way it’s specialized around. Taking it from like a series to like a cloud. A component of that spectrum. Had to think a little bit differently. A quadraphonic setup. Designing things that move. Allowing the constraints to shape something. Stood the test of time. Better to analyze a lot of signals. The mentality shift. The primal scream into the anechoic chamber. An ear discovery. Sense like how internal sound is to just being. Opening up, putting the antenna up. More aware of what the power spots are in hearing. Find the ideal value. Weird kinda long triangular like foam absorbent cone things. Like little just differences. The way it’s specialized around. Some of the coolest outcomes. Designing things that make sound and interacting with them. Clouds of objects. Form different auditory textures. All of these things, it compounds, when you have more speakers. For this love. A really powerful message. Such a great lesson. Take a listen. Listening to that body, listening to that muse. Eat vegetables. The ecosystem of it. All that kind of stuff. Juices you up so you can keep doing it. Size and scope of routine. Both of these things can be true at the same time. Sculpts the sculptor. Naturally happening for a variety of influences and forces. The amount of modalities. In the cultural zeitgeist talking about it. That unspoken language. All that kind of stuff. Value time and creativity. Some rocks in the streams. Keep down the path that you want to be on. Write that song that the song is pulling you towards. Throw paint at the wall, and try to find beauty in it. The thesis of our song. Feel that rush when you write a new song. Get the song right. Gets happy. Fits vibe better. Music is in a really cool spot right now. In everyone’s best interest. Another example of perception reality. Works well together. It goes both ways. Both of these things can be true at the same time. The patience and the wherewithal to stand by and do that. The flexibility is key. Resources that you can deploy to make art better. Unpack that a little bit. Things that aren’t perfect. You can exhale and start over. 🎐

Jon "Bemuda" Schwartz has been the drummer and right-hand man of Weird Al for the better part of four decades. He's toured the world, been on the Simpsons, played on certified diamond records, and made his mark across genre and culture. He joins the pod to share his love of music and regale us with tales of the absurd journey.
In 2020 Jon became a published author with BLACK & WHITE & WEIRD ALL OVER, a coffee-table book featuring more than 200 of his unreleased black-and-white photographs of Weird Al from the early '80s. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACCORDION! followed in 2022, with more than 300 color photos of Al and the band.
There are still gigs and recordings with various local players, but none quite as notorious as Jon's perennial association with Al, which he regards with great pride:
"I get to be a dozen different drummers on every album... I don't know of another drummer who has a gig like that. It's always fun and often a welcome challenge. Al's made me play parts I didn't know how to play, and learn technologies that didn't exist when we started, and I thank him for that."

Benjamin Lazar Davis is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, arranger, composer and record producer. He is a member of several bands, including Okkervil River and Cuddle Magic. Davis attended New England Conservatory of Music.Davis's father Peter started being a musician at the age of five. Peter toured nationally and internationally with several groups, including a brief time with the Mamas and Papas. Like his son, Peter can play a variety of instruments ranging from banjo to clarinet to trombone. Davis's interest in Africa came through his father who spent three years in Malawi as a school music director.Davis has a brother and two sisters. He collaborates with his brother Tim on songs.In 2006 while students at The New England Conservatory of Music Davis, Alec Spiegelman, Christopher McDonald, Kristin Slipp, Cole Kamen-Green, and David Flaherty founded Cuddle Magic in 2006. The band is known for collaborations with many artists including Fred Frith, Ran Blake, the David Wax Museum, Larkin Grimm, Mike & Ruthy (formerly of the Mammals), Phyllis Chen, Joy Kills Sorrow. Individuals from Cuddle Magic have also performed with Bridget Kearney, Railbird, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Baby States, Ronald Reagan, Bird Fly Yellow, Margaret Glaspy, The People's Champs, Girls Guns and Glory, Lake Street Dive, Petal Shield, Split Red, Yapp! and The Superpowers Horns.Davis went to West Africa in 2009 and 2014 to study music. "The first time I went ...., I was studying awa drumming, which is like drum ensemble music for a bunch of different instruments." Davis is referring to a music tradition involving the djembe and dunun style of drums. In his first visit he heard of northern Ghanaian tradition of music called Bawa. In 2014 Davis traveled to Ghana with Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive and a former member of Cuddle Magic. They spent just over two weeks in the capital Accra, studying the traditional music of Northwest Ghana with master gyil player Aaron Bebe. They subsequently co-released an EP, BAWA, incorporating gyil music as source material. After leaving Ghana, Davis came down with typhoid and was very sick.When Davis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman) met in 2013, they found they both had an interest in Central African Republic Pygmy music. Davis co-wrote, recorded, co-produced and toured for the album Let It Be You (Reveal Records 2016) with Wasser.

Speech has rhythm, repetition, pace. Voice overs have style, tone, pitch. There’s a reason why so many singers are voice actors, and Alessandra is a perfect example!
As an incredible multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer, producers, she brings music to the mic whether it’s on Jazz vocals or a Starbucks commercial.
Alessandra is all things creative. A voice actor, vocalist, bass player and producer. From creating characters at the age of three, to singing in front of large groups at thirteen, she knew her place was on stage, in the studio, and on camera. Growing up in a musical family helped, as weekends were spent having family jam sessions.
Soon after her completing degree in studio music, she landed a gig singing with Ben Folds and the Pittsburgh Symphony, sang for Radio City Music Hall as a Rockette, and sang on My Brightest Diamond’s album “This is My Hand.” Studio singing quickly opened up the doors for her as a voice actor, with clients such as Google, Dove, Starbucks, Verizon, LEGO, Target, Cinnabon, Hello Fresh, Corona, Ketel One Vodka, Hasbro, Amazon, Wingstop, Sonic, Santander Bank, iHeartRadio and many others.

Ever been curious about the ways in music that money gets made? A big part of it is the sample/loop economy. Dylan has torn up the Splice charts with his one shots and loops, leading his music to major label releases and international brand campaigns.
I discuss this vanguard of music with Dylan, as well his his musical journey, network, and his eponymous musical project.
Dylan is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer born in Morgan Hill, California. After graduating with a degree in music business from Loyola University New Orleans, Dylan moved to Los Angeles where he currently resides. As a musician, he wears many hats by co-producing (for artists like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Phabo, and JUICEB☮️X), scoring background music for TV (featured on Discover Channel, the Tennis Channel, and the Metaverse), while also playing live shows as a sideman for various singers.
His most recent musical venture has been selling guitar and drum samples through Splice, a subscription-based sample library for producers. He has produced these packs in collaboration with OneStopShop, an independent sample production label.

Dion Kerr is a forward-thinking, multi-dimensional artist (multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, songwriter, photographer, and videographer) born and raised in South Florida. Kerr’s work reflects a broad range of influences and mediums. He has toured and recorded worldwide as a leader and a sideman to various groups spanning multiple genres. Dion Kerr displays his unwavering talent as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and conceptual artist. Utilizing acoustic and electric elements, he blends a wide range of influences and styles into a cohesive sound that expands the limitations of genre-bound music. There are hints of Dion’s eclectic taste in his records' melodic groove-based instrumentals. Experimentation is essential in Dion’s process and is always represented in vivid fluidity.
Dion can be seen at some of the most renowned festivals, venues, studios, and galleries with many great young and upcoming artists of all art forms. Kerr has shared the stage with Ignacio Berroa, Nicholas Payton, Lillias White, Godwin Louis, Jean Caze, Emmet Cohen, Immanuel Wilkins, Justin Brown, Tivon Pennicott, and most recently Marcus Strickland coming off of their European tour of festivals and venues such as Ronnies Scott’s in London. Dion co-founded the band The Smoogies, who released their debut album Planet Smoogies with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and People Music; they are set to release their next record, a live album, in 2024. Dion was the lead engineer and co-producer of Seafoam Walls record XVI; he also played guitar (formerly bass) in the live incarnation, released on Thurston Moore and Eva Printz's label Ecstatic Peace Library, which was recorded and produced in his home studio. They recently got off tour, opening up for Unknown Mortal Orchestra for their US tour dates, and have secured a sponsorship with Fender. He is also a key member in many other highly sought-after bands in South Florida and New York art scenes.
His musical career began early on by being billed with the Dave Leibman quartet while he was still in High School, leading them to reconnect at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in NY, where he attended school on scholarship. He has been seen at venues and festivals such as The Blue Note, Sevilla Jazz Festival, Martinique Jazz Festival, Ground Up Festival, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Quebec City Jazz Festival, Young Jazz Festival, Casa Del Jazz, and Adrienne Arsht Center. He has toured North America and Europe extensively with different bands. Dion has scored music for films featured at SXSW, New Orleans Film, and Miami Film Festivals.
Dion Kerr’s new solo record, set to be released in 2023, follows up his latest releases, Ivy, which also features Jeff Parker, Bubby Lewis, Adam O’Farrill, Reptile Ground, Echoes of Lost Time, and Ruby. His new record showcases his expansive musical knowledge and arranging abilities, featuring himself on bass, vocals, recording, production, and mixing. His YouTube series Dialogues has been his most recent outlet, which features a wide variety of musical artists that he performs together in an intimate duo setting, which showcases the individuality of each featured artist and how a musical conversation can take place in hopes of bringing people more together.

Shawn Sutta is a composer whose devotion to film is fueled by his desire to bring people together - both to create a work of art and to tell stories that move people. A passionate collaborator, Shawn enjoys creating with orchestras, choirs, bands and instrumentalists while working closely with filmmaking teams to make stories that connect with audiences.
In 2011 Shawn Sutta started a co-venture creating film music with his close friend Adam Robl, a like-minded musician with a shared passion for his craft. Over the past 11-years, Sutta and Robl have dedicated themselves to composed music for a mix of films that have been featured in theaters, streaming platforms, and prestigious festivals all over the world.

Keep a close eye on this duo, as they follow in the footsteps of alt-pop icons Men I Trust, Alvvays, and Japanese Breakfast.
Human Barbie, an analog fantasy formed in 2018 by songwriter Christopher Leopold, weaves wistful pop, shoegaze, and psychedelia into a melancholy glowscape. Their debut album ‘Get a Life’ (Poor Man Records, 2020) explores personal heartbreak through psychedelic pop, meticulously recorded on vintage equipment. ‘Get a Life’ received acclaim from fans and critics, featuring in Brooklyn Vegan, BIRP!, Indie Shuffle, KCRW, Buzzbands.la, and Spotify playlists like Undercurrents, IRL ANGEL, and Fresh Finds. The album was a top seller on Bandcamp, with songs used in commercials, including a Facebook radio ad and DISCO’s 2022 SXSW mixtape. Inspired by its success, Leopold crafted the patient and expansive EP ‘no worries’ in a Baltimore warehouse, channeling 90’s-era shoegaze nostalgia.

Building collectives and communities of musicians and likeminded individuals. Taking the octopus approach, Håkan has racked up 65 million streams with electronic project Swedish Red Elephant, placed songs with indie outfit I Don’t Speak French for commercials and TV shows. As well as running a successful studio and indie label “Indieshake”.
