Matt Higgins grew up in Queens, New York, but his upbringing was very untraditional compared to other kids. When he was just 16 years old, his mother was disabled, and his family could only afford to eat government cheese.
In addition to attending school full time, he worked overnight at a deli, making as little as $3.75 an hour, walking home with a butterfly knife to protect himself in case he was jumped.
Matt eventually made the tough decision to drop out of high school and get his GED to further support himself and his mother. On the last day of high school, as he walked out the door, Matt's teacher told him, "I'll see you at McDonald's. What a waste."
But he didn't let that get to his head. He was driven to accomplish what others thought he couldn't and reach financial security.
On April 2nd, 2001, he did it. He became the youngest press secretary in history, making over $100,000/year. But it was too late. That same morning, his mother died.
"We are all victimized at some point in our life. But the number one job you have when you are a victim is to not protect or worry about your reputation. It's to heal."

At Neil Blumenthal's little league baseball game, there was a shootout where a man was shot three times. His mother was the first to run over to provide assistance and help save his life. Neil pitched in to help stop the bleeding until the ambulance arrived.
From this point on, he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Serve others and have a positive impact on the world. And he did just that when he partnered with David Gilboa in 2010 to found Warby Parker. Warby Parker is a retailer of prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contacts that offers high-quality products at an affordable price. For every pair of glasses or sunglasses sold, a pair of glasses is distributed to someone in need. So far, that's 13 million pairs and counting.

Letâs talk about entrepreneurship. Over the last few decades, it has gone from being looked at as âtabooâ to being idolized. And since the creation of the internet and social media, it looks like everyone is becoming one. We are sitting down on our couch, consuming the stories of people successfully building their companies and thinking, âOh, I could have done that!â With there being over 582 million entrepreneurs in the world, the competition is next level. That begs the questionâŠhow do you do it? And what if you canât raise any VC money for my business idea? Can you still have a business?
The answer is yes, and today as a guest, Mike Salguero will share his story of building a $600 Million business from no venture funding. And he will share why, after his last company has not taken a dollar from VC, and maybe why you shouldnât either.

When Brian Scudamore was four, he drew a picture of himself hauling away junk. Little did he know he'd become a millionaire from doing so. Fifteen years later, he got to work on his idea investing a thousand dollars, $700 for a pickup truck and the rest for some business cards and flyers.
At the time, his girlfriend had an idea to call the local newspaper to tell his story, which made the front page, and in 24 hours, he had a hundred job offers. The business took off, but he wasn't satisfied. He dreamed bigger and did not have the right people in place for the business. So he fired all of his employees, took a piece of paper, and wrote what he envisioned for the future.
Today he is turned that paper into an empire that owns multiple brands, nearing a value of a billion dollars using a franchising model.

On the podcast today, Jesse Randall joins to discuss how his firm SweaterVC is breaking the barrier to entry into Venture Capital.Â
So, to start angel investing, traditionally, you have to be an accredited investor. To do so, you need a $1 Million net worth and an income of a couple hundred thousand dollars per year, singling out a large portion of the population.
"And I thought, you know what? I could build a venture fund. So I started going through this process of looking for an anchor LP to come in and maybe build this thing around. And it became immediately apparent that I wouldn't be able to invest in my own VC fund because I was not an accredited investor.
And I thought, wait a minute. I'm the guy running the fund. How could I not put money in my own fund?" - Jesse Randall

Previously Elad Schaffer Co-Founded Wikistrat, the world's first crowdsourced consultancy. They leverage a worldwide community of several hundred strategic thinkers to run simulations of likely international events and unfolding global trends.
After that, Elad noticed a level of friction in the travel insurance industry that could be removed. Faye started out as an AI travel assistant, predicting if your flight would be delayed and providing you with other insightful information about your trip.
But then COVID-19 hit.
"I think as we saw the pandemic hit, we realized that there's only that much you can do with data alone. And. Once your flight has been canceled, it's not enough to know about it in advance. You also need to be revoked or have your sleep costs reimbursed." - Elad.
So he pivoted the company into a modern, easy-to-use travel insurance business. Listen to the full story.
