Simple reflections during extraordinary times. A thought-provoking podcast focused on keeping positive, remaining humble and life lessons. Lindy’s motto is “Smiles Come in all Languages and in all Colors”.
My final recording in this series. It's been fun, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to listen. Episodes will remain online for the duration of 2024.

What happens on the road stays on the road, right? Not always! After a brief hiatus from recording, I am back after 6,500 km's of road travel from BC to Yukon. It was quite a journey, and if I had more time, I'd share more stories. In today's episode you will hear my perspective of travel from Vancouver Island to the beautiful Yukon Territory. During travel I went for almost 5 days with no cell coverage, no internet and no use of electricity. I saw moose, porcupine, bison, deer, caribou, mountain goats, black bears, fox, coyotes and of course, our 13 year old poodle. It's amazing how a journey back to basics can rejuvenate your inner soul. This full length episode includes a musical interlude at the shores of Toad River, and a chat with a traveler from Lansing Michigan who shared the story of his flute.
*Disclaimer: This is a hobby podcast. My thoughts are shared from my viewpoint and are not intended to solicit or discourage travel options. Suitable for adults due to a couple slips of "road travel" words.

We all have a toolbox, or our "kit bag" full of tricks and things we have learned over the years. Sometimes we go through life using the wrong tools, and it makes the job harder. When we have the right support systems in place, whether it is physical tools or people, life is that much easier with more chance of success. In today's episode I talk about times when I took on tasks without the right tools, and also share my own experience with teaching others. Life is a one big learning curve, and each lesson we learn adds to our toolbox.

Life is a journey of goals and accomplishments. Buckets lists are a great way to forge ahead, overcome personal challenges and plan for happy moments. Whether it remains a dream or you have the joy of reaching a goal, bucket lists can bring a lot of joy. A key to keeping it happy is to keep it realistic without pressure. I brought a creative touch to this episode, as we travel on the Flight of Life. Sit back, relax, put on some earbuds and enjoy the ride. It's a shorter "flight" on this episode, but one with plenty to think about. Thanks for tuning in!

Putting yourself down is not a means of being humble, it can actually cause poor self-esteem and convince yourself you are not worthy. It's ok to find joy in your accomplishments, and they don't always have to match what the person is doing next door. In this episode I talk about staying positive, accepting compliments, promoting self-esteem with people around us and simply finding the good in what you do and others do.

Newspapers and journalism have played a every important part in our lives. We are fortunate to have many dedicated people who work so hard to ensure we have knowledge of local, national and international events. Our method of receiving news is always changing with technology, but one thing that will never change is the real people behind the stories and voices. In today's episode I touch base on how much newspapers meant to me when I was growing up, and I share my gratitude for the people who work tirelessly to share important events. I also reflect on how fast stories can change if they are not told correctly, and give tribute to my friends at a local newspaper in my hometown where they are moving in new directions after 124 years in business.

I am grateful to be back in the podcast chair today, and happy to be walking without crutches. In today's episode I chat about how I am finding myself thinking more about how we can help others, yet maintain a safe distance at the same time. When we are out and about doing errands, day to day life, we run into all kinds of personalities and situations. Until we have walked in someone's shoes, we simply can't imagine what they are going through, and sometimes we need to use our best judgment and know when to help, and when to walk away.

Curveball - can you catch it? Yup - I caught it and I'm ready to kick it in the butt, with the good foot, that is. Yup, this little old podcaster found herself in a bit of a pickle this past week and is now sporting the most elegant looking boot with styling crutches. Ok, a little exaggeration, but I have been off my foot for a week and I'm learning a lot about how much I took for granted. Perhaps this is a humbling experience for me, and it may help me to once again question if life lessons keep happening for a reason. I realize now that I took so much for granted, and it gives me so much more admiration for the strength of people who are dealing with much more serious situations.

What did you think of this episode?
Tea can be daily routine, cultural tradition or simply a great reason to relax, sip and snack. I attended a Mad Hatter themed tea party in April, and it was so much fun. Although I was a vendor on the market side, I discovered first hand just how much the tradition of tea is celebrated differently. There's more to afternoon tea than just tea, and believe me, I tasted a few of those desserts and it was sooo worth it. I dressed up in costume and took the opportunity chat with guests and other vendors. Of course if peaked my curiosity, and I wondered about the tea habits of my friends in the UK.
In this episode I talk about the Mad Hatter Tea Party event, touch base with the organizer to hear what inspired her, and even follow up with 4 lovely ladies from UK who give us a sneek peek at what tea means to them.
This is a nice, relaxing podcast episode. You may even want to pour a "cuppa", and relax while you listen. A little positive boost is always a good way to wrap up the day.
My sincere thanks to Lori Ball from the Comox Valley Home Based Business Association, my UK friends Lynne Webster, Nikki Talbot, Lyndsay Williams and Maureen Chadwick, and everyone who took the time to share stories or allow me photo ops at the event.

Disclaimer: This episode contains adult subject matter and may be a sensitive topic. Coercive control has been around for years, yet there are many people who are not aware of what coercive means. Control that is beyond normal could be happening to a friend, relative, co-worker or perhaps even in your own household. In this episode I am joined by guest Jennifer C. Parker, M.S.S.W., author of Coercive Relationships, Find the Answers You Seek. We chat about what coercive control is, some of the signs and setting personal boundaries. I have a copy of this book, and it certainly brought so many things to light for me.

Life is a balancing act, and often we discover that what is priority for us may not be of importance to another. Finding a common ground that works with family and friends can go a long way in nurturing friendships and personal care. In this episode I reflect on times when one priority was in fact supporting the role of another priority, with a reminder that life with loved ones is precious.

Life brings lessons in many different ways. This past week I worked hard to prepare for a craft show, and unfortunately it was not well attended. At the end of the day, I still had a great time. The time that I spent getting to know the other vendors was worth so much more, and I will always have great memories of this past weekend. When we are gracious with an attitude of gratitude, it's amazing how much we can see things in a different light. In this episode I share what I was able to take from this experience, and I will continue to try to find this focus as I move forward to my next chapter. It's amazing how our view on the kaleidoscope of life can be amazing when we use a positive lens.

I am a creative thinker, and maybe a bit on the quirky side. I recognize my creative thoughts don't work on a 9-5 schedule. When the urge to write short stories, poetry or a podcast hits, I simply need to stop and get that creative urge out of the way so I can better focus on projects around me. Most creatives understand this scenario, and it can present challenges when balancing creative moments with responsibility.
In this episode I had a wonderful discussion with Lisa Zawrotny, the founder of Positively Productive Systems and the host of the Positively Living Podcast. Together we talk about the challenges of a creative mind, methods to prioritize while allowing the inner artist to blossom. If you are a "creative", you will likely relate to this and if not, it may help bring some understanding to the creatives in your life.

There are times in business when people make mistakes. It happens, and it's life. People are humans and humans make mistakes. Quite often people have a different reaction to
mistakes, whether from the business perspective or the customer view. Either way, presentation and response can make a big difference on the final outcome. Sometimes we are faced with a situation and don't have time to think, and may find ourselves second guessing our own reaction. Either way, kindness on both sides can go a long way in mending a difficult situation.

Homesick is a term I had almost forgotten about until my recent return to Canada's beautiful Yukon. I was quite surprised at the flood of emotions that targeted my heart on the last day of my trip. A little stroll through my old neighborhood brought back so many memories, and the hugs of my grandchildren and sisters made it really hard to leave. At the same time, I was happy to return to my current home on Vancouver Island. I figured it out. My heart is in two places, and even though I am now an island girl, I will always be a Klondiker at heart.
*After recording I thought about all the people around the world who are displaced during times of conflict and war. I realized how lucky I am to have my home, and my wish as always is for peace.

It's International Women's Day , 2024. What does that mean to you? For me, it's not about celebrating me but more about celebrating the amazing trailblazers from generations before me. It's hard to believe that at one time Canada's Supreme Court ruled that women were not people. In this episode I reflect on the advancements of women's rights, and give thanks to all people who worked hard for fair and equal recognition.

Fun. A three letter word with lots of punch to it. What defines fun? Fun for one person may not be fun for another. Do you have to be good at something to have fun? Pay it Forward is a term we often associate with buying someone a coffee at the drive-thru. Have you ever picked up the tab for someone you didn't know, simply because you wanted to do a kind thing? Does Pay it Foward only happen with restaurants and drive-thru's, or is it a concept that can be applied in every day life? In this episode I talk about Pay it Forward, and it started with a set of tires dumped in the woods. This is a shorter episode with a big message: small acts of kindness can go a long way.

In the early 1970's, it was common to see newspapers, magazines and posters promoting cigarettes and smoking. As a young girl, I even pretended to smoke with crayons, and followed the example of many adults. In those days, it was promoted as visually attractive to smoke vs today where we know so much more. It's not easy to quit, especially for people who started many years ago. Not easy does not mean impossible. In this episode I share some personal stories, my own experience with smoking and offer some encouragement to people who are facing the challenge of quitting today. No room for judgment, simply support.

Happy New Year! As we begin 2024, many people are creating resolutions with goals that may last a day, or perhaps two. How about the goal of positivity for the new year? Many factors can affect positive living, including the power of thought and our own actions. At the end of the day, we all have a role to play in the power of positivity. We can't always control what life brings us, but we can control what we bring to life.

Life gets busy, and times are changing. As we head into the holidays this is a time
to focus on positives, look at what is good and try to advocate for positive change
around us. We are all human and make mistakes, and sometimes we just need to slow
down, breathe and focus on what really matters in life. I dedicate this episode today to my oldest sister Denise, who has reminded me that sometimes we just need to focus on the rainbows and push those clouds aside.

Welcome Back! After a month of not recording I concluded that I really miss my podcast. Hardly a day goes by where I don't think about it. This is where all the creativity began, and I love sharing positive stories.
Sometimes we need to take a break, stop, and look at where we can make changes. I tried to stop recording, but my heart is still here in the podcast. It doesn't change that life got too busy, and I needed to stop, refocus and find new directions. Sometimes if we go back to basics, we discover that there truly is a way. It felt great this morning to go back to my original intro music. I kept the episode short, and spoke from the heart. That's how it began, and this is how I will return. Simple, straightforward and speaking from the heart.

As we head into Thanksgiving weekend, it's important to recognize that although we have many things to be grateful for, it has not always been an easy path for everyone around us. To the contrary, for some people history has left a legacy of trauma and painful memories. It is important to set aside time, reflect and listen to the stories shared by elders in our communities.
In today's episode I touch base on many topics, including gratitude, the celebration of Thanksgiving, sadly the impact of the residential schools and the importance of listening, learning and caring. As we talk about celebrations, it is important to acknowledge where they began, and move forward with respect and compassion.

Garden therapy comes in many forms. From artistic design to digging in the dirt, working in a garden can have so many benefits. In today's episode I went out on location, toured an amazing community garden and learned so much about it's history, tips and tricks and the value of the volunteer hours behind the scenes.
Discover the hidden gems of the gardens, including the meditation garden, allotments for public rental, and the breathtaking rose garden. But our exploration doesn't stop there – we'll also dive into the Courtyard, the Garden Cottage, and the Loop, each with its own unique story to tell.
Most important out of all of this is the value of dedicated and kind-hearted volunteers, working behind the scenes for the enjoyment of our community.

A simple walk with my dog led me to creating this episode. On my walk, I noticed multiple cigarette butts on the side of the road. It is dry outside, and we have experienced drought conditions here for months on end. I could faintly smell the smoke coming in from outlying areas, and had to abort my "walk n' talk" episode because I became a little winded.
With forest fires raging in parts of western Canada, I found myself thinking about all the people who were recently forced to leave their homes. I sat down in my back yard, reminiscing of a time when I flight attended on northern aircraft in the 1990's and worked during a community evacuation. I thought about how grateful I am for the safety of family and friends.
I am a podcaster and this is what happens : one thought leads to another and soon I was recording an unplanned episode.
*My thoughts are with everyone who has been evacuated from their communities due to the fires, and especially with people who have lost their homes.

Prepare to be whisked on a journey down memory lane! I'm inviting you to hear about my experience at the biggest car show I've ever witnessed, where over 500 vintage beauties graced the Comox Valley. Imagine strolling between rows of automotive wonders, their vintage interiors exuding the scent of the past. I was reminded of my sister's first car, a Plymouth, and the thrill of owning a Stingray Corvette when I was a teenager . But it wasn't just about the cars themselves. Oh no, it was about the stories behind each one, the nostalgic feelings they elicited, and the passionate individuals who brought them to life.
Ever considered how your daily habits could be draining our most precious resource? In today's episode I talk about the reality of water consumption and the role we play in preserving it. Prepare to say goodbye to your lush green lawns during those hot summer months. It's not the bane of your backyard, but a badge of honor representing your commitment to water conservation. Remember, every drop counts, and it's time we all start counting.
Moving inside the confines of our homes, we uncover the potential for water conservation that lies within our everyday chores. Think low-flow shower heads, strategic plant watering, and a mindful approach to consumption. Our conversation isn't just about saving water, it's about understanding the value of water as a human right, not accessible to all.
Join me on a delightful journey as I explore the heart and soul of dining - the Old Style Diners. Packed with nostalgia, these diners have been the backdrop of many of my cherished memories. In this episode I share the story of The Ideal Cafe, a reminder that what you see on the outside isn't always what you'll find on the inside. So, sit back and join me as we wander through the charming vintage decor, savor the mouth-watering food, and revisit what makes these Old Style Diners the heart of our dining experiences.

Hey there, it's Lindy! I'm thrilled to announce a shift in the way I'll be bringing you episodes of Lindy's Audio Cafe. To fit into my bustling lifestyle as a small biz owner, home manager, and pet parent, I've decided to increase my focus on producing more audio content for podcasts and maintain my videos for recorded guests only.
In a heartfelt talk with my recent podcast guest, I disclosed my philosophy of painting our guests in the best light possible, taking a page from lessons I learned from a Yukon radio veteran. This episode covers many topics today, including a tribute to Ron McFadyen, his dedication to positive storytelling, and his knack for making interviewees feel good about their recordings.
Grab your headphones and join me as I take you through workplace gratitude, learning from others and reflecting on lessons we have learned. We are all in this world together.

Shelly McKee loves riding bicycles. It is her life and she is grateful for every moment she has. Shelly does not give up, and there are not many people out there who can tell you they rode their bike to work in -52 below 0 temperatures. Riding a bike is not a race for Shelly these days, and she is happy to be out there enjoying the fresh air and natural surroundings. It wasn't always that way for Shelly. For several years she was racing and one crash too many took it's toll on Shelly's health and direction. In this episode Shelly shares her story, and reminds us that an attitude of gratitude goes a long way.

This is a supplemental mini-episode to Throwback Thursday. This has been a week of many inner reflections. Life changes so quickly, and the clock keeps on ticking. The older we get, the more we know. It doesn't mean we know it all though, as we are human and always learning. Hindsight is always 20-20, and real people make real mistakes. In this episode Lindy reflects on her memories of high school graduation 39 years ago, and the challenges faced by young people today. A few reminders to seize the moment and live life while you can, no matter what age you are.

Have you ever gone one a bike ride and felt like you just wanted to keep going? That's exactly what Matthew Douglas is doing! Yes - note that I said "doing" and not "did"! At the time of this podcast, Matthew is in Montreal, Quebec, and he has traveled there all the way form Sechelt, British Columbia. Matthew kindly took time during his rest stop to come on the podcast, and share his story. Some days this tenacious young man is riding over 200 km's a day, and he just keeps on going. A few more weeks until he starts his summer job, and he's learning so much about Canada along the way. He'll have a few stories to share when he goes back to university this fall. This has been one of the most fun episodes I have ever recorded, and I am sure you will enjoy listening.

To be tenacious is a good thing if you want to be productive, however there is a fine line between being tenacious and knowing when it's time to stop. During busy times, it is easy to get caught up in the race for happiness. Sometimes all it takes is a picture or something to bring back a memory, and that trip down memory lane reminds us of what is truly important. In this episode Lindy reflects on the importance of a healthy, active childhood, and gives credit to her three older sisters who were very influential in her childhood. Whether you are a parent or a grandparent, the message in this episode is worth hearing: kids need time to use their imaginations, everything in moderation.

AUDIO MINI-SPOT
A busy day with real life events triggered the realization that sometimes we are just too hard on ourselves. Mistakes happen. Some are big, some are small, but we are human. The most important thing is that we learn from mistakes and focus on self-care and love for others. What started out as writing a blog for the website magically turned into a heartfelt talk about life, learning, gratitude and self-love. Funny how a little microphone always finds a way into the picture.

Emotions are a good thing, and it's ok to shed a tear or two. It can be tricky when you are in a public setting and the waterworks kick in. A recent attendance at a local choir performance began a journey of reflection for Lindy, along with a quest for more tissue! Music brings harmony and trigger memories, bringing an awareness of aging and changing times. In this episode what started out as a quick late afternoon walk turned into a thought-provoking podcast recorded outside with nature. Lindy's most heartfelt podcasts come when sitting by the ocean, and in this episode she shares her experience in the choir concert and the impact it had on her life that day.
Please be forgiving of the occasional "hiss" that was coming from the cell phone recording, in addition to the sound of the plane overhead. It was an "on the spot" recording, direct from the heart.
Additional notes: My gratitude to my friend Thom for the invite. It's amazing how a small action can lead to big moments.
Congratulations as well to all the wonderful performers with Island Voices Chamber Choir, Quadra Singers and Comox Valley Children and Youth Choir. Your concert in March 2023 was great!

Customer service is a hot topic these days, and it seems to hit social media when things don't go well. What is happening to customer service these days? Does lack of training, sense of entitlement or staff shortages create problems? What is our role as a customer when it comes to an agreeable transaction?
In this episode, Lindy is joined by guests Michelle Stanock and Anne Smith-Nochasak for thought-provoking discussion. Michelle Stanock is a professional customer service trainer, with a focus on aviation and the service industry. Anne Smith-Nochasak is a retired school teacher, self-published author and has experience handing the phones in a call center environment.
Whether you are a customer, business owner, manager, front-line worker, sales professional or anyone involved in the service industry, this episode is worth listening to. It's a bit of a longer one, so be sure to put on some headphones on while you attend to your tasks, or sit back with cup of coffee. Hit pause if you have to, but come back and listen to the end because there is plenty of information in this podcast. It's worth the listen, especially if you are involved in any type of business that involves customer interactions.

Customer service can make or break it for a business, and poor customer attitudes can be the catalyst in loss of service or amenities. Life really works so much better when both customers and businesses can work together. While preparing for an upcoming podcast on customer service, Lindy takes a few moments to share her own personal thoughts on customer service. This short introduction is intended to be thought-provoking, and will hopefully generate discussion about how we can all worth together.

Air Hug? National Hugging Day? When did hugs become such a topic? Certainly the pandemic made us think more about personal space and social protocol, but it was really nothing new in many ways. To hug or not to hug, that is the question! Hugs can be so heartwarming, yet they can be a thorn in the side for people who don't like a hug. In this episode Lindy touches base on the topic of hugs, and even ends the episode with an "Air Hug" across the miles.

An incredible story of survival is shared in this episode today. While traveling through Alberta this past summer, Bob Wells and his family were caught in a hail storm with massive ice chunks pounding the car. This was no ordinary storm, and the terrifying moments of shattering glass will leave memories of a vacation like no other. Bob Wells shares his story about the impact of the storm and the issues he encountered when dealing with the aftermath of vehicle damage. This episode was recorded on a snowy day on Vancouver Island, and appropriately ended with a chat about road safety and travel tips for the upcoming winter months. Thank you to Bob Wells for sharing photos and video, and most important, for taking the time away from his busy schedule to share his story.

I have a cold and it has robbed me of my voice. It looks like chicken soup and hot lemon tea are on the menu. In the meantime, I am unable to podcast and will return when I am able to do so. Yeesh! I am off to eat some chicken soup, drink some lemon tea and perhaps see if a few potato chips might help.
Have a great week everyone.

A hobby is something that you do for fun in your leisure time. It should make you relaxed, and not be a source of pressure. If you are finding yourself feeling more unsettled or not really enjoying that hobby anymore, you may be experiencing hobby burnout. It's ok to take a break, or even simply remember that this is for fun and it's ok if it doesn't turn out the way you expected. In this episode Lindy reflects on people who have shared kindness with their hobbies, and reminds us that hobbies are for fun and not pressure.
Some people are naturally grumpy, while others always seem to bounce back with a smile. Have you ever thought about what kind of person you are? In this episode Lindy reflects on things that can make her a little grouchy, while recognizing that she is also the culprit on some days! In this episode Lindy reflects on childhood moments when competition with friends came close to crossing the line. A recent camping trip brought back these memories, as kids in the campground were struggling to be in first place. Whether it is sibling rivalry or wanting to be one up on the neighbors, competition can leave a sour taste if it causes hard feelings with people you are close to. Remember the old days of retro sayings? From "Groovy" and "Far Out" to "Grodie to the Max", slang sayings have left many people scratching their heads wondering how these sayings made it to the English language. Times have changed, and it seems we almost need to go to school to learn online lingo and acronyms. Imagine if you are trying to learn English and none of these things makes sense? A little trip down memory lane, with a look at today's new method of "shorthand". Oh, and a reminder to be patient with those of us who did not grow up in the keyboard world! An outdoor enthusiast and retired teacher, Anne spends her summers outside enjoying kayaking, canoeing and hiking. Have you ever been caught up in the Race for Happiness? Run here, run there, eat fast food because there is no time to cook, work harder to pay for more things you don't have time to use, and the list goes on. Quite simply, sometimes less is more. During a recent camping trip Lindy reflected on the pure happiness that is achieved through simply enjoying nature. It's funny how a pool of fish can trigger deep inner-reflections on time spent with family, and the management of workplace and life balance.

This episode was recorded on a cell phone at the beach. You can hear the ferry running in the background as I get started. The weather was hot out, we had blue skies, and it simply seemed like a great idea to do a recording with the ocean behind me. As a hobby podcaster, you go with the flow and on this day I had noise in my yard at home. This seemed like the best solution. It was tricky to get started, as I had my camera on and was trying to avoid capturing people walking their dogs. A friendly woman stopped by while I was getting started, and asked about my show. I didn't do the best job describing it, but she was interested in what I was doing and was more than happy to say a quick hello on camera. Thanks Michelle - you made this kind of fun! This is not my usual episode, but I thought it would be a great chance to get outside and share a few tips for staying cool in the extreme heat. It makes me think about people who live in extreme temps year round, and don't always have access to clean water. We are truly lucky to live where we do. Enjoy your summer days everyone, and stay safe!

Staying active is important for your physical and emotional well being. In this episode, Lindy has a great chat with Lynsday Williams of the Busy Mums Fitness Corner podcast. Lyndsay wears many hats, including running her own home based salon, fitness coach and yes, a busy mom! There are many great ideas on how to stay active, whether you are a parent or simply a busy person. Lyndsay's positive attitude will keep you smiling, and perhaps even motivate you to do some bicep curls with that jug of milk. This episode runs close to an hour, and you will find it well worth it. If you listen to podcasts on your favorite app, perhaps you might put on some headphones and listen to this one while going for a walk, working in the yard or riding your indoor fitness cycle. Dogs rely on their human families to keep them safe. In this episode Lindy is joined by Eileen Drever, Senior Officer Protection and Stakeholder Relations for the BC SPCA. Together they discuss ways to help keep dogs and other household pets safe during the summer months. Dogs should have access to fresh food and clean water, shelter from the elements and never be left in a vehicle in warmer temps. Be Kind is a phrase we heard so much during the pandemic. Did we become oblivious to it, because it was used so much? Are we thinking of being kind in terms of being polite, or is it in our everyday actions and interactions where kindness exists? Whether your are helping someone pack the groceries in, welcoming new neighbours or simply helping in our day to day living, even small actions can have a large impact. We are all in this world together, and good people screw up from time to time. With a bit of caring, kindness and respect we can all work towards harmony and make the world a better place.
