Just after Halloween in the United States, a tradition of imitating ghouls and ghosts and many Marvel characters, Catholics in Italy and across the world celebrate November 1st as All Saints Day. Then November 2nd, the Day of the Dead, is a tradition celebrated in Sicily, due to Sicily's historic connection to Mexico through its once Spanish dominance.
Please enjoy the mi.o podcast with author Ettore Grillo who will share about his journey to becoming an author, about the tradition of the Day of the Dead in Sicily, as well as discuss his novel, "November 2" which is an excellent window into authentic Sicilian culture, the tradition of il giorno dei morti, and a metaphor for universal truths Ettore has learned over a lifetime of spiritual discovery.

Please enjoy our mi.o conversazione with Nicoletta Polo , Duchess of Palma and proprietor of Butera28 in Palermo, Sicily.
My name is Nicoletta Polo, I was born in Venice and used to be an interpreter (I speak 6 languages) and a music festival organizer. Cooking has been my passion since a young age and I have always loved to entertain and cook for our guests. In 2008, Gioacchino and I returned to Palermo, making it our permanent home, after many years of living all over the world, including a wonderful four year stay in New York where he was the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute (ICC). We now live in Palermo in our beautiful 18th century family Palazzo by the sea, the last home of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, my husband's cousin and adoptive father and the author of the world-famous novelIl Gattopardo (The Leopard).
From Prince Giuseppe, my husband Gioacchino has inherited the title of Duke of Palma (Palma di Montechiaro, a town near Agrigento, Sicily, which was founded by Prince Giuseppe’s ancestors in 1637). I manage a few holiday rental apartments all located in our Palazzo and I have been holding Sicilian cooking classes for almost ten years. I am not a professional chef but I love cooking and have embraced the Sicilian culinary tradition with a passion. In my cooking classes I offer a cultural as well as a culinary experience. I am passionate about Sicilian history, culture, art, food and I am always happy to welcome guests from all over the world and share my love for this beautiful region. Most of my guests from the USA are Italian Americans who are proud of their Sicilian ancestry and want to discover the land and the culture of their forefathers.
Since the beginning of this unbelievable predicament that we all find ourselves to be in, I was forced, of course, to stop giving cooking lessons. But I miss my guests, I miss the wonderful atmosphere of my classes, the joy of cooking together and sharing recipes, stories and laughter. Therefore, I accepted with enthusiasm the proposal of organizing exclusive online cooking classes for the members of the mi.o community. My “real” cooking classes include the visit to the market and to my terrace garden, the lunch and the tour of our Palazzo, and all that will of course be missing. But I promise to send you videos (you can already see some of them on my YouTube channel) and I very much look forward to welcoming you all here to my home as soon as the world will become a friendlier place to live.
If you love to be inspired, then please allow us to introduce you to John Petralia and Nancy Petralia. They have become Amazon Bestsellers with their book, Not in a Tuscan Villa, after living in Italy and writing about their adventure! The couple followed it up with Looking for Garibaldi, in which they traveled to various countries in South America to learn more about the man who contributed to the unification of Italy.
We discuss John's Sicilian background; his parents came from Catania, and he also has roots in Petralia, Palermo (from which his surname originates). He grew up in Philadelphia, and as an Italian-American, understands the true meaning of "campanilismo" - having a "love of the area that you're from....not just the region, but the very town".
After deciding to spend a year in Italy to learn more Italian, John and Nancy found that their perspective on daily life and culture was significantly influenced by living abroad. Not only did they write two books on their story, they continue to lead public speaking events and provide travel recommendations to their followers.
Please enjoy this interview, and feel free to contact John and Nancy on our platform!
