The Mother Wit Podcast will feature intimate stories of people navigating the healthcare system throughout the perinatal period (fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond). You will also hear from some of the most thoughtful and innovative practitioners and leaders in the perinatal healthcare space including Midwives, NPs, IBCLCs, PTs, fitness professionals, and birth workers of all stripes, therapists, etc. who specialize in this unique life stage. My sincere hope is that this podcast will provide a safe space for consumers to feel heard and validated. I also hope to provide a space for healthcare providers to share their stories. There are so many tirelessly working to improve healthcare and who are fully invested in serving as a source of inspiration for the next generation but their voices are rarely heard.Together we will learn from the struggles and successes of our peers, build a strong and resilient community of both consumers and healthcare providers who share these values and goals so that we can empower each other to create and/or seek out the kind of care we all deserve.Music by Alejandro Pina (for lessons or original music contact him at: alejandro_pina@hotmail.com)

She shared the nuts and bolts of her training methodology with us and we talked her path to becoming a women's fitness specialist, about CrossFit and how exposure to it shaped her ideas about fitness for most women. We also talk through the needs of women through the lifespan and share tools for healthcare providers who are ready to dive a bit deeper when working with their clients.

My guest today is Sarah Holiday, a long time Mother Wit mama. Sarah (and her husband!) did a lot of hard work in our time together as they worked through mental health challenges, some of which stemmed from childhood experiences, others were related to more current circumstances related to a stressful move, the pandemic and pregnancy itself. No matter what was going on for her, she always knew what she wanted and needed and was always ready and willing to do the hard and introspective work that one must do to overcome or find their way to the other side. She has always kept in touch and she reached out when she was pregnant with her second baby because she was determined to get the in person midwifery care that she deserved that first time around. She is here today to share her two experiences. I feel confident that consumers and providers alike will learn something from her story.

In this lighthearted little episode You will hear from three husbands who have been married to midwives ranging from 6-38 years! You already know two of them, Rachel Mast and Kathy Herron. They bring with them their husbands, Josh and Pete. You will also meet another very special midwife and her hilarious husband, Danielle and Joe Stracci. Joe, a writer and podcaster himself, was kind enough to let me play a clip from his podcast, I better start writing this down. This started as a silly idea that I conceived of in the weeks leading up to my wedding and that I've been very slowly working on ever since. You will also hear from the greenest of them all, my mid-husband - Pablo Paz. I’ll jump in and share some thoughts from time to time. Enjoy and thanks for humoring me.

Today's topic is one that many listeners are going to learn a lot from, both healthcare consumers AND providers. I learned so much from them myself. I came to this conversation prepared to challenge my own deeply held beliefs about health and wellness as it pertains to weight, weight bias, stigma and especially how it pertains to ideas around weight loss and Im so grateful for their time and willingness to share their perspectives and expertise.

Today’s episode is about infant loss. If you are not prepared to listen to this story today, please skip it. Take care of yourself and reach out for help if you are in need. See resources below or on my website.
This episode is dedicated to the Shenoy family and to all families who have survived the loss of a child.
My guest today is Divya Shenoy. She was pregnant with twins when she came to me for postpartum care. She started early because she knew the risk of preterm birth was increased for twin pregnancies. Shortly after we began working together, she learned that her cervix was shortening and that she required a cerclage- that is a stitch placed in the cervix to help it stay closed and keep the babies inside where they belong. Unfortunately, a few days after her cerclage was placed, her water broke. She spent the next couple of weeks in the hospital so that she and the babies could be monitored closely for the right time to have her babies. We actually had our first session while she was in the hospital and still pregnant. On Jan 14, 2022, she gave birth to two beautiful baby boys, Arvin and Ajay. They weighed less than 2 lbs each. She knew that what was to come was going to be difficult and likely not look at all like what she had seen others go through as they made their transition into parenthood.
Stay with us as Divya to tell the rest of her story on her terms.

On today’s episode, I have one of the most honest stories any new parent has ever told on this show. If you have been listening for a while, you know that each season, I feature clients who are willing to share. I invite people with all sorts of varied experiences and perspectives. But I do try to shine a light on topics for which people need more information, topics that people need to learn more about and especially where I think a personal story is the best way to talk about it. So today, Patti, a client who stands out in my mind as one of the people who struggled the most with a history of depression and anxiety before, during and after her pregnancy, graciously shares her story. At times, I worried that maybe I wouldn’t know how best to help her but she worked hard and was so willing to try almost anything I suggested. I found that to be such a unique quality because as you likely know, anxiety and depression can be debilitating but she was rather persistent in her pursuit of happiness.
Warning: This episode could be hard to listen to if you are struggling. So please, take care of yourself and if this one isn't for you, skip it. In fact, skip ahead to the resources listed below.

If you missed season 1 episode 12, I recommend listening to this one first. But for those of you who are not going to do that. Most of the time when I find a new show, I just jump in right and don’t look back either so I get it. In which case, here is a quick recap...
Rachel is a very talented athlete. She is a gymnast, a crossfitter and does jujitsu competitively. She is a crossfit L2 coach and a Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coach (P&PA Coach). She is also a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) who attends out of hospital births both at home and at a freestanding birthing center in Meridian Idaho at the New Beginnings Birthing Center.
When she was on the show back in March she was pregnant with her first baby and suffering from hyperemesis. We talked about her experience and about why coaching and midwifery are so well aligned. Basically, we shared a soapbox for the better part of an hour. It is one of my most listened to episodes to date. So, I asked her to join us again to share her birth story and to update us on her return to fitness.
I am particularly interested to hear what might have felt unexpected, or if any given experience challenged her beliefs or changed her perspective. Because, while I don’t believe we must have babies in order to be good at this work, it does provide a perspective that you cant get any other way.
Enjoy the show.

I think the title says it all but you will have to listen to get all the details. The biggest take away is the connection that you can literally hear and feel between these two women. Forming these real connections is one of the gifts that midwives give to our clients but it takes two and the people who choose home birth are open to and actively giving back to their midwives too.
Im not trying to change anyones mind about where the right place to give birth is. The right place is exactly where you want it to be, where you feel safest. But I do hope that this episode will help to answer questions that listeners may have about home birth and dispel some myths and at a minimum, help people understand why some choose home birth and help newly pregnant people better understand all of their options.

Anne is a mom to two boys- James and Charlie. Before becoming a mom she was a Pastry Chef. After experiencing serious burn out in the restaurant industry, she shifted to coaching Crossfit. Then, while pregnant with her first son, she became certified as a Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism coach because she was not getting answers to her questions on exercise in pregnancy. She had her first son in a hospital with an obstetrician, and quickly realized that the whole experience was not what she wanted. Three years later, she had her second son at home under the care of a midwife. Both experiences taught her so much about herself as well as the birth world.
Anne is a friend from my OG Crossfit gym in Brooklyn, shout out to Crossfit 718!
I wanted to have her on the show to share her birth stories, and, more importantly, to talk us through why she had a hospital birth with her first baby and a home birth with her second.
This is so important for people to hear because Anne’s story is not unique. Many have a first baby in the hospital for a variety of reasons but partly if not entirely, because they were raised believing that this is the safest way to do things and they simply don’t question it as a norm. But for many young and healthy women, having a baby is often the first time they are a “patient” in the hospital, and some will walk away from this experience feeling unsupported, others will feel as if they were fighting an uphill battle, some will be traumatized, obstetric violence and coercion is real. Some people have received the inaccurate memo that out of hospital birth is unsafe. Many don’t know what a midwife is or exactly what we do or where we do it.
Join us as Anne shares her journey with us.

Nurse Nikki is a Family Nurse Practitioner, trained doula, and IBCLC. She is the owner and founder of Bloom Maternal Health and is one of my heroes. Her mission is to improve maternal health outcomes and decrease disparities, especially for Black women. She inspires me to think outside the box in ways that are hard for me, and interestingly enough, she also encourages me to think inside the box in ways that challenge me. But seriously, my mentors aside, a couple of which you have met already this season, she is up there on a pedestal with those I respect most.
Nurse Nikki runs multiple programs including Bloom Community Health, Bloom Period, and My Yoni which we will talk more about today. She also provides services both virtually and in-person to pregnant and postpartum people who have had breast and gynecological surgeries as well as those who have experienced pregnancy loss. She is also one of the lactation consultants that shares her expertise in, Thriving After Birth, my online, comprehensive, self-paced course on all things postpartum.

My guest today is Cheri Van Hoover. She has been an ardent advocate for women, families, and the profession of midwifery for more than 4 decades. She became a midwife in 1987. A native of Washington State, she lived in California for 32 years, where she received her midwifery education and provided full-scope care for widely diverse populations in varied settings, culminating as assistant clinical professor with the UCSF Faculty OB/GYN Group.
Since returning to rural Washington 15 years ago, her clinical practice has focused on outpatient reproductive health and she has served as distance faculty for the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University, now Thomas Jefferson University.
This is how I know Cheri. She was first my professor for a health policy course and then we worked together during the years that I was faculty at PhilaU.
Her scholarly publications cover diverse topics: health policy education, midwives in politics, midwives as palliative care clinicians, and body art. She is an active member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and has won numerous professional awards. Cheri is the third of 4 birth professionals to share her birth story, which of course is also the birth of a mother and a midwife.

My guest today is Kaela Kajiyama. She is a pediatric sleep coach who I love to connect and collaborate with. She helped me see things differently when it came to this fairly new specialty because, in years past as I became more and more aware of sleep coaches, I got the impression that this was all about implementing cry it out but paying someone to do it for you. Then I started to see some nuance, but I was still quite skeptical, especially as it related to supporting breastfeeding goals, but Kaela has really helped me to see the bigger picture. Of course, all sleep coaches are different and come with their own ideas of what is right or wrong and what works and doesn’t work and there isn’t a lot of hard science yet, but I can still get behind sound advice when framed the right way. It’s not a far cry from things that I would call midwifery intuition, things that we have known in this profession for nearly all of time but have had to prove before being heard.

Guest: Robin Bradley
A midwife who practiced in Westchester County for her entire 30+ year career. Robin and Kathy Herron, who you recently heard talking about painful sex in the postpartum period are the two most important midwives in my own professional journey. They took me under their wing and taught me everything they knew.
Robin is here to tell her birth stories today. However, this is also the birth of a midwife. These stories are often interwoven. What a special treat it was for me to document her stories given the role she has played in my life and career.

She is a frequent member of my interdisciplinary team. Anyway, I’ll let you, the listeners, see if you can put your own finger on what it is that makes her such a special and welcome addition to my team.

Katrina Fields was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 21. She began a career in healthcare-focusing on patient experience in large part due to her experience and desire to help others. Katrina shares how she actively navigated this trauma when it arose again for her due to nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. She also experienced a 4th-degree laceration during the birth of her baby. My guest today is Chantel Zapata-Pray. She is one of the original Mother Wit Clients. We started working together in December of 2018 on preconception care
So, what is Preconception care? Healthcare focused on one’s health and wellness provided with the explicit purpose of improving the health of the birthing person and baby.
Most people don’t know to prepare or ask for this type of support and while it's fairly commonplace to schedule an annual exam, it's not at all commonplace to say, “I'm planning a pregnancy in about a year and I want to make sure I'm tip-top. So, we midwives, and others, of course, squeeze this in wherever we can, and unfortunately, it can be almost imperceptible to our clients and society at large.

Individualization!
One of my favorite things to do is educate both my clients and healthcare providers about fitness in the perinatal period. There is so much that needs to change so much about the way we approach this discussion in the clinical setting. Sometimes it doesn’t happen at all and often times it is brief, inaccurate, and instills fear in the people who are trying to get moving or who want to stay moving.
My guest today is Rachel Mast. She is a Certified Professional Midwife at the New Beginnings Birthing Center in Meridian, Idaho. Rachel is a gymnast, a crossfitter, and also does jujitsu- Competitively! She is a CFL2 and a P&PA coach herself.
Note: Rachel and I start off discussing her experience with hyperemesis and a bit about the very special practice that she works in which is a mixed practice of CNMs and CPMs.

Tongue-tie is common yet poorly understood by many clinicians and clients alike. Misinformation and conflicting advice abound. It is distressing to new parents and can lead many to end their breastfeeding journeys early. Evidence-based and empathic support is essential. Erin's story is intense and takes twists and turns I've not seen with other clients. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in. It's our longest episode thus far but I trust it will keep your attention. In addition to tongue-tie, you will hear about some other bumps in the road including her prolonged perineal healing process, postpartum depression, and her experience of sleep training her infant.

This is not your typical postpartum story, but rather a refreshing outlier. Beth went on a girl's weekend at 6w postpartum while her husband cared for the baby. She leaned on me throughout her fourth trimester to help manage anxiety, maintain her senses of self, and to get all her questions answered, big and small, without judgment or having to go down the google rabithole. So today, I ask Beth, who now has a little space from these early days to tell us a bit about how she came to understand herself as she did, how she navigated all of this and remained true to herself in the early days postpartum.

Jennifer Hunter-Marshall is co-owner of Crossfit Garden City. She is a mom of two, CrossFit Level 4 Coach, and an actor. She struggled with infertility but then had an easy pregnancy, until she developed preeclampsia during her first pregnancy and again postpartum with her second. Today she shares her story. As we near the end of the discussion, we talk about the trauma that she experienced and the ways it is still with her despite her wonderful support system and the love she has for her children. Likely, she will always have some unanswered questions.
Jenn’s story is a hard one to hear. I had/have a lot of thoughts about the way in which her care unfolded. Every pregnant person deserves to be told the symptoms of preeclampsia because it can happen to anyone. But especially those with risk factors.

In this episode, Dr. Mel and I focus on the role of the PFPT in birth preparation. Dr. Mel has spent the last year helping healthcare providers and consumers to shift the way we think about when to see a PFPT. When we see a PT for preventative care, she says we can "optimize" your pelvic floor health which can positively impact your birth and your recovery.
While we use the words “woman, mom, and mama’s” in this episode, we recognize that not every birthing person is a woman or a mother.
