The Thriver Talk Podcast: Recent Episodes

Miguel Bautista

My name is Miguel Bautista and I am fully recovered after suffering for years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. After a very intense and emotional 4.5-year roller coaster ride my turning point came after a bad crash sent me to the hospital where I was completely bedridden for over a month unable to even turn over in bed. Luckily, that’s where I met a doctor gave me information (and along with that - hope) that would be key to my recovery.

In this Youtube Channel, I break down the science behind the root cause that was driving my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and related debilitating symptoms (severe fatigue, PEM, migraines, insomnia, intense heart palpitations, POTS, body tremors, muscle pain, and much more), as well as what I’ve done to heal myself from all these symptoms.

REMINDER: I am not a medical doctor or therapist. I am sharing my own experience and research. My video content is for information and educational purposes only. Please consult with your medical professional.

"It just really got to the point where I just couldn't move...

I was so bad, so much pain. The pain was unbearable. There wasn't one bit of my body that wasn't safe. I couldn't walk, I couldn't talk, I couldn't do anything. I couldn't even turn around in bed. So it was just horrible. I remember thinking was the point.

Once I started getting better I felt so free and so accomplished, like I started having my life back. It just felt amazing. That's the only way I can describe it. It was just like being reborn again, having a second chance in life."

And for people like us type a personality people, that's a really hard reality to face.

I had to pretty much find a reason larger than myself. I had to look outside of myself for inspiration.

The majority of the time that I was sick, I was just living in my mind and I was daydreaming.

I would journal almost every day about my thoughts, what I was feeling, my emotions, and things I wanted to do in the future.

Here's what I found:

You're literally living in two worlds. One is a real-world where it's horrible and the other is your fantasy land in your mind. During those dark times, you're forced to retreat into your mind, and you're forced to go deep into the darkest corners of your mind.

  1. Find a purpose bigger than yourself, a purpose like family, your loved ones, people around you.
  2. Paint that picture for your future. This is a time to reinvent yourself and reinvent your future.

"Not only did it answer 10 years of hundreds of questions of symptoms and other stuff that happened...a big part was that I stopped looking anywhere else for answers.

Now I have the answer

Now when I'm on production onset or something and symptoms arise, I kind of expect that.

Before I didn't know what they are and why they are, they were this big monster and I was just panicking. Now I know how to deal with them"

When you're living with chronic fatigue syndrome, it's easy to feel like a passive participant in your own recovery. The day-to-day of dealing with the illness can leave you feeling tired and drained, without much energy left for anything else. That's why it's important to take an active role in your treatment - so that you don't just get through this period or "wait it out" but come out on the other side even stronger.

Many people with chronic fatigue syndrome feel stuck and unable to change their mindset. They feel like they're trapped in a situation that cannot be changed and do not know how to get out of it. But if you've ever seen a ship turn around, you know that it can be done.

We all know that change doesn't come without some work, but even the smallest changes can have an impact over time if we keep at it. Sometimes just making small adjustments can help us find our way back home from that dark place we may feel like we're stuck in for good.

This video is about the importance of having a solid mindset when recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The key is to be grateful for all the good things in your life, even if they seem small, and to accept that there will always be some negative things too.

Instead of trying to be positive all the time, you should look at everything from a whole perspective and accept both the good and bad, understanding that without either you can't have the other.Β

The Gratitude Effect Audiobook - https://amzn.to/3LnXdfi Before I even read this book, I didn't realize I was actually putting the gratitude effect into practice - having massive amounts of gratitude made a huge difference in my recovery journey. Being able to see any situation from a full perspective and appreciate both the good and the bad allowed me to handle any situation much better than before.

The Magnifying Glass Effect - This concept is part of the Recovery Science Blueprint I've created. Learn more here - https://www.cfsrecovery.co/recovery-s...

When our body reaches its stress threshold, the brain starts to go into survival mode and it thinks there's danger everywhere because it's so used to responding to stress.

Essentially what happens when your brain is on high alert mode is it perceives every stressor as 10 times worse than it actually is, and actually takes things that aren't stressful and turns it into something that's stressful.

Do you have a hard time getting back into your old routine after an illness or trauma? The first step is understanding that it's normal to feel this way and not be able to bounce back right away. You may feel like the trauma will haunt you forever and that there's no way out of your pain. But it turns out, there are ways to get past this debilitating condition and live fully again It may even take months before things start feeling like they're going in the right direction, but with some patience, effort, and support, there are ways for those who struggle with the past to get back on their feet.

In this video, I discuss how self-sabotage can stand in the way of your recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). I talk about how negative self-talk can lead to a downward spiral, and how important it is to be aware of your thoughts in order to stay on track.

In this video I talk about how you need to start thinking long-term and "big picture", and in turn, you will start making day-to-day decisions that won't set you back.Β

Many people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) feel that they live in a fog, and sometimes it's hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. Recovery can seem impossible when you know how bad your pain is today but don't have any idea how long it will be until you start feeling better again. Β The reality is that recovery takes time and patience, so many people give up before they even get started.Β

In order to recover from this condition, short-term thinking needs to be replaced by long-term goals.

The truth is, there's no one size fits all approach to treating CFS and it really depends on the individual. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferers often find themselves juggling many responsibilities in order to balance their illness and maintain a sense of normalcy for themselves and their family members. Inevitably, this leads to short-term thinking because they have trouble saying no to opportunities that will make them crash.

Living with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can be challenging, to say the least. Many people with CFS suffer from a wide range of debilitating symptoms, including shortness of breath. This can make even the simplest tasks feel incredibly difficult. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to addressing shortness of breath with CFS, understanding what may be causing it can be helpful in finding ways to cope.

Write down your thoughts and feelings and write letters to your future self.

When you do write down all these letters It's just a matter of time when you do get better and you look back. Then you're going to remember the situations that you were in, the mindsets that you were in, what you were feeling, what you were thinking, and you're going to be like, damn, I made it.Β

And it's going to make your recovery story that much sweeter.

People living with chronic fatigue syndrome often have a hard time getting out of bed. They may need to stay in bed for hours on end just to get the energy they need to do anything at all. However, small changes can lead to massive results.

Most doctors tell you to rest and wait, but this does more damage than good. The worst part is that you can feel awful for years without knowing what's wrong with you or how to fix it.

"My goal, in the beginning, was to try to feel normal for just a split moment of split-second of the day, I'm not trying to have no headaches the whole day. I'm not trying to feel any symptoms, for half a day.

I'm trying to feel no symptoms for a split second, just to show my brain what it's like to have no symptoms. And then once I was able to get that feeling for just a moment, Then I'd try to extend it. Okay. Let's try it for one second. Maybe for one second, I can have no symptoms if I just do the brain retraining and make all the symptoms and pain go away.

And then I was able to do it for a second. Then I didn't five seconds, then 20 seconds, 30 seconds. One minute to the point where I was able to actually do the brain retraining and. Now, instead of feeling okay for just a moment, I would feel okay for five minutes, then 10 minutes. I didn't feel any symptoms.

And then obviously the symptoms would come back. Then I had to do it again, it's a process. It was step by step, day by day, week by week, month by month. But if I had just focused on that brain retraining stuff or whatever I was doing and expect to not feel any symptoms at all and feel AOK or feel 10 times better."

In this video, I talk about how your body is not your enemy.Β

Some key concepts I cover-it's not us against our body, it's us against our old self, habits, mindset-once we understand that our body and mind are on the same team that's when we truly start to heal-your body instinctively knows when you are pushing it in a way that it cannotΒ sustain, so it forces you to slow down-sometimes your body will stabilize in aΒ state of chronic pain or fatigue

In this video, I talk about why you may feel weakness and fatigue if you have cfs or chronic fatigue syndrome. . I also share some tips on how to ease anxiety and make steady progress in your recovery.Β

If you're feeling weak and fatigued, it's important to understand that this is normal for people with cfs. I explain that it is normal to feel this way after taking a break from physical activity, and that it doesn't mean that you are powerless or stuck like this forever

Take any regular person and have them sit mostly on the couch or stay in bed and they will also experience weakness, fatigue, lack or coordination, and shakiness. The key is to not let it scare you and understand that your regular muscle function will come back to normal fairly quickly.

There are many things you can do to help increase your quality of life- though it will take both an internal and external transformation to fully recover.

When you start feeling all these symptoms, you feel like it's taking you on this physical journey, a journey of pain, suffering, and desperation. And it, it's a very physical feeling, at least in the beginning, and things are changing around you.

You're not able to do many things. You typically end up pushing and crashing a lot at the beginning of your illness. And what was once a physical journey that you're going on a physical block actually turns into a mental block and it's a mental journey that you have to partake.

Even before I was physically getting better, I was getting better in my mind. I was seeing myself in a different way. I was more confident in my abilities. I was a lot more positive. So the shift that happened in my mind came before the physical changes started to happen.

Most people with chronic fatigue syndrome have trouble regulating their adrenaline and cortisol levels, which can lead to an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and even cardiovascular disease. One strategy for managing your symptoms may be to learn how your body works so you're better able to calm it down when it's experiencing stress or tension.

You know what it's like to have your nervous system constantly on alert, ready for a fight or flight response at any moment. That's why this video is especially important to you. You must learn how to calm down your nervous system. The first thing that we need to do is figure out what exactly triggers our nervous systems. For many people with chronic fatigue syndrome, stress and anxiety are major factors. It can be difficult if not impossible for us to regulate these emotions without help from a therapist or coach.Β

The nervous system is the means by which your body sends messages to and from your brain. When you are under stress, it can be hard on both your mental health as well as physical.Β

CFS Recovery offers one on one coaching sessions to learn how to bring balance back to the nervous system.

Don't gamble with your recovery. Don't be the person who goes all in and then loses everything and then gets caught up in that vicious cycle.Β

You make some progress, you know, you feel really good. You feel like you're winning. You're super happy because you're excited and you're obviously euphoric and you think things are going really well.

You go even further, you're even happier. It's a new, all-time high you're winning. You feel great again, you can go higher. You're even happier, but eventually, you overdo things and completely crash. You're back stuck in bed shortly after thinking you just conquered this thing for good.

All your progress tanks.

The worst part? This isn't the first time you've overdid things and ended up crashing, yet you can't help getting excited when things seem to be going so well.

Don't gamble your way to recovery. Your progress has to be science-based, not left up to luck. I break these concepts down in this video!

I know how it feels to push through symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. I've done it for years, but what I really needed was to take time off and rest. The problem is that most people with CFS don't know that they need rest because their illness has robbed them of the ability to distinguish between physical exhaustion and mental tiredness.

Most people push through symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome is because they are afraid to be seen as lazy or weak. It's not until you take a step back and realize that your body is telling you something, that it becomes easier to listen. I know this first hand.

And you figure at this rate, this it's going to take me years to get better.

The truth is it might take you years, but realistically, it's probably not going to take you as long as you think and it doesn't mean that you have to completely put your life on hold during that entire time!

In the beginning stages of recovery from chronic fatigue, it is common to feel overwhelmed with emotions. This is a normal part of the recovery journey.

Often times when recovering from chronic fatigue, people will think with their emotions rather than logic.

The emotional side of their brain can be telling them to push through and work as much as possible, while the logical side of their brain knows they need rest in order to recover. On the other hand, the emotional side of their brain can be telling them all the bad things that can potentially happen in the moment, but logically there's a very slim chance that these things will happen.

If you've been suffering with CFS for a while then you probably ask yourself this question thousands of times - when will the symptoms go away?Β

Want the truth?Β

Not any time soon.Β

Now I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but there is a concept you need to understand about how symptoms come and go throughout your recovery journey.Β

It can be super confusing trying to even keep track of all the symptoms you're feeling in your body so I've simplified it and broken symptoms down into just two categories: Primary Symptoms and Secondary Symptoms.

Primary Symptoms seem to linger and rarely go away, while Secondary Symptoms seem to be more periodical and noticeable when they do come.Β

It's frustrating when you're suffering from chronic fatigue and don't know when the symptoms will go away. You may feel like you're constantly battling this condition, with no end in sight.

If you learn to calm down the nervous system and rewire your immediate response to symptoms, eventually they will subside. Keep hope alive and don't give up if you're dealing with this condition – there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe you feel like no matter what you do, what doctors you go see, whatever you read, whatever new method you try to implement, doesn't work or it will only work temporarily. Then you find yourself back at square one.

It can be very frustrating. And what I realize now is the mindset that got me sick could not be the mindset that gets me out of this situation

If you keep the old mindset that got you into this situation, you're only going to get worse and worse. A complete reversal of your life situations requires a completely different mindset.

You see, there is so much we care about in our lives that we need to stop worrying about for a little bit so we can free up some mental space and physical energy. The results come when you stop caring.

Being diagnosed with Covid-19 is a worrying experience for anyone. But for some people, the virus doesn't go away after a few weeks. Instead, they develop what's known as long covid, which can cause a range of symptoms that can last for months or even years.Β

According to a recent study, long covid can cause your nervous system to become hypersensitive. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Glasgow, found that covid patients who developed chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs) were more likely to have heightened sensitivity to light, noise, and touch. This can also lead to symptoms such as brain fog, memory problems and difficulty concentrating. The findings suggest that long covid can have lasting effects on the nervous system, even after the initial infection has resolved.?

When I first started the program, I would be in bed 95%, 98% of the time. I couldn't be upright. No sitting, panic attacks 24/7..."

Adjustment Period vs. Crash

There's a big difference between a crash/setback and an adjustment period however, most people overreact to the symptoms they're feeling. Their emotional response alone is enough to amplify the physical symptoms you feel.

I know all too well what it feels like when the downward spiral begins and you start feeling worse and worse, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, until you can barely do anything.

The thing about chronic fatigue is that it's not something you can just wake up and shake off. The more you try to fight it, the more your body seems to resist. But if you take care of yourself, listen to your body, and avoid making a small problem bigger than it already is- then one day the symptoms and fatigue will start to go away.

We must take stress off the nervous system, and people don’t realize how mental and emotional stress can have an even bigger impact on what we feel physically. Β

You can’t stop your symptoms, but you can take the next step to managing them. If you are struggling with thoughts about how to get unstuck in your recovery, it may be time for a one-on-one coaching session so we can work together on getting back into balance. We have helped hundreds of people learn how to manage their symptoms and improve their lives through what we teach. Book your call today while we’re still offering 1-on-1 coaching!

Do you ever feel like your body is shaking or trembling for no reason? Maybe you experience internal vibrations or tremors that seem to come and go without warning.Β

If so, you're not alone. Millions of people around the world suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition that causes unexplained body tremors, vibrations, and trembling. While the cause of CFS is still unknown, there are treatments available that can help lessen the symptoms.

Your mind is a powerful tool. If you constantly tell yourself that you are sick and will never get better, then it will be hard to recover from your illness. However, if you believe that you can heal and have the right mindset to do so, then it's more likely for your body to follow suit.

In this video, I talk about how to increase activity the RIGHT way in order to recover from cfs or chronic fatigue syndrome. I go over the progress cycles and how to execute them correctly so that you can avoid crashing. I also mention how important it is to have support while going through this process.Β

Many chronic fatigue patients rely too much on medication and this can throw their nervous system off balance. This is because medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers may be used to treat the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) instead of treating the underlying causes. Patients who continue to take these types of medications for a long period of time will eventually develop side effects that will make them feel worse than before they started taking them.

Many people who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome have trouble recovering because they are not doing enough to take care of themselves. Β

They have a lot of self-doubt and might feel like their situation is hopeless. But with the right mindset, you can find ways to recover faster! One way that has been shown to help is visualization - picturing yourself feeling better and being able to do things again. Visualize yourself running through the park or swimming in the ocean without any limitations/ It's time for you to be your own best advocate. You deserve this recovery journey just as much as anyone else does, so make it happen!

What symptoms did I deal with during my recovery journey from being completely bedridden to hiking up mountains in Hawaii?

Normally you seek multiple opinions from different doctors and either they tell you they have no idea what's going on, or they tell you a few things that might help you in your situation. So you go to another doctor and you're given pieces of a different puzzle.

Before you know it, you have multiple different doctors telling you five different things, giving you five different tools from five different practices. And then it gets to the point where you give up on doctors or the medical system because nobody is giving you a solid answer.Β

Taking a bunch of information from so many different places and trying to put it together versus approaching it with the idea in mind that this is a nervous system issue problem simplifies everything.Β

Once we start looking at it through that lens, it removes a lot of the anxiety and provides clarity on what exactly we're trying to fix rather than "throwing darts in the dark" hoping this next treatment or supplement will work.

If you suffer from CFS, you know how exhausting it can be. Symptoms like extreme fatigue and brain fog can make even the simplest tasks feel impossible. While there is no one-size-fits-all cure for CFS, there are a few things you can do to increase your energy. One of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your energy is by actually doing more of the RIGHT activities.Β

Most people feel better after doing things they enjoy. This is because engaging in activities you love helps rewire your nervous system into a relaxed state. When your nervous system is relaxed, it's better able to handle and REWIRE symptoms of CFS. So, if you're struggling with this condition, try doing more things you enjoy! You may be surprised at how much this can help. Of course, you need to do things within your limit at the moment, but don't get caught in the mind trap that says ANYTHING you do will make you worse - that is not true! Some things will actually give you energy.

The parasympathetic state is the most important step in recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome because if you are not in a calm state of mind, your body isn't going to have the energy required to heal itself. Β There are many ways to get your body into parasympathetic mode, and I will go through them all in detail in this video.Β

Brain retraining is a technique that helps you learn new ways of responding to stressors in your environment. Β With chronic fatigue syndrome, we know that there is often overstimulation in the sympathetic nervous system which causes people's bodies and minds to be in a constant state of high alert- this makes it difficult for them to rest or relax.

The key is finding a time that fits seamlessly into your routines.

It's time to break the cycle of "more is better" and find a new way. It's time to try something different. You don't have to keep pushing yourself, you can take it easy too. Start with small changes that are sustainable for your body, mind, and spirit - like increasing your duration before increasing the intensity of activities.Β

It is important to understand that your body needs time to recover from chronic fatigue. If you are recovering, take it slow and steady; try adding 5 minutes at a time to see how you feel. When starting out, don't push yourself too hard or overdo it because this will only make symptoms worse in the long run.

The struggle with chronic fatigue syndrome can be overwhelming. It's difficult to know how best to manage and recover from the illness, what you're supposed to do, or what will help. No matter how long you've been living with CFS, there are so many things that can help you feel better and it can be very overwhelming trying to do "the right thing". In this video, I'll outline some simple mindset changes that have helped me get back on my feet again after years of struggling with this illness - without spending a fortune or using complicated treatments like IV therapy or homeopathy which have not worked for me in the past.

Remember that when you do things outside your comfort zone and you do take those steps towards recovery, you will feel symptoms. There's not a single person I know, including myself, who didn't have symptoms during their recovery.

But like I've mentioned in several of my other videos, your success and your recovery are determined by how well you respond to symptoms. So just know that symptoms are not the worst thing ever and don’t mean your recovery is failing or not working. In fact, you should expect symptoms on your recovery journey and understand that they are indicators and triggers for you to practice brain retraining.

Some highlights from this video

-Our body is always trying to find balance. It's trying to find a stable place -Our habits and time is what brings our body's back to its regular baseline -The more you let your body rest and stabilize the more you will heal -As you heal and recover, your tolerance zone expands to the point where you'll be able to do normal things most people can do -You want to be in the healing zone most of the time

IMPORTANT: -In extreme cases (long term symptoms) your body gets confused and stabilizes in a state of chronic pain and symptoms -When your body stabilizes in the wrong state (long term symptoms) you could be resting all day and you'll still be getting worse -The healing magic happens when you're in the healing zone where you're feeling little to no symptoms

I've dealt with CFS / Fibro / POTS for about 5 years and at the worst stage, I was completely bedridden unable to even turn over in bed. At one point I was bedridden for eight months straight unable to walk and luckily came across a doctor who was able to help me fully recover back to 100% and feel even healthier physically and mentally than before I got sick.

In this video, I talk about the science of my recovery and share the different tips and strategies that helped me go from being unable to even feed myself at times to hiking up a mountain in Hawaii 12 months later.
