In Ralph's last sermon as Associate Vicar he also closes the sermon series on the marks of mission. "The climate emergency is the greatest challenge that we face in generations. It is absolutely clear that following Jesus must mean include standing alongside those who are on the front line of this unfolding catastrophe."

Anna emphasises how the message of Paul gives us freedom from human rules. God has made you alive in Christ so you don't need to worry about these old ideas.

We don't need to live in the shadows because Jesus has come - look to Jesus.

It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness. David uses the famous Holman Hunt painting and the Amnesty International symbol to emphasise that Christ is the Light of the World, waiting outside for us. But we have to be the ones to open the door from the inside.

How do we avoid distraction?  Adventus - Coming Towards - What does Advent mean to you? - What does it mean for the church? We are living in fear of the future. People will die to try and find a safe place to live. The world is becoming more inhospitable as we create CO2. So where is the God of Love?

How do we respond? How do we avoid distraction or despair? Jesus knew we tended to do this and told us to "be careful". Distraction becomes a burden and we get lost. Social Media makes this even more possible to bury your head in the sand. But the bible says "Look for God", "Be on the watch" , "Take solace in me"

Jesus says "Lift up your heads because your redemption is drawing near"

It's our Feast Day, the feast of Christ the King. But what does that mean? Ed looks into the origins of the day and how it was started by the Pope in 1925 as an emphasis on Christ after the mass annihilation of WW1.

Ed then looks at

  • As he was - feeding those who followed him
  • As he is today - Christ the King is no longer with us as he was with his disciples. We reach out to the weary and serve in his name.
  • As he will be forever - We are waiting for him to return, it sustains us and gives us something to look forward to ahead.

As we celebrate the feast we will remember him as he was, embrace as he is and look with hope to the glory in the future.

Martha (as on old woman) recollects the amazing story 50 years later....... Veronica imagines Martha talking to a visitor 50 years later about the amazing time Jesus raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead - just before Jesus himself went to his own death. Meanwhile Martha's friend John and the youngest disciple is writing a book of his recollections of the time he spent with Jesus.....

What if disappointment is needed for your soul to truly encounter God? This miracle took place at the feast of tabernacles a major festival for the Jewish nation. Jesus has just used the analogy of the living water and the light of the candles in preaching before this miracle. The priests were very unhappy with this teaching. Jesus uses this miracle to make the point that his teaching in the days before is truthful

God is not a moral vending machine. It is not more good in - more blessings out. Bad things happen to good and bad people. It is a feature of the world. We all ask why can't we have our own miracles? But to trust God is to trust his timings.

He is with us in the storms. Tash links the famous story of Jesus walking on water with the Exodus story of Moses parting the Red Sea. Jesus is demonstrating he is God by this mastery over this element.

He is God

He is with us - Task tells us the time she was caught in a huge ice storm in Iceland.

He will sustain us - Do not worry.

The only miracle featured in all 4 gospels and another classic we probably were taught at Sunday school. It must be important. Did God actually multiply the bread and fish or was his example enough to get everyone who had packed some food to share it so everyone was fed? It doesn't matter - both are miracles.

Looking at today currently 1/3 of the planet has more than enough to eat, 1/3 have just enough and 1/3 starve.

HARVEST - anagrams of

HAVE

STARVE

SHARE

HEARTS

Those who HAVE , SHARE with those who STARVE, they do this because of changed HEARTS.

The story shows;

  1. Christ's compassion for the people
  2. Christ's colossal power
  3. Christ's concern for the planet

Healing - it's very tricky. Why does God heal some , but not others? Mike draws the short straw! The seven signs we are studying are only in John. This is the 3rd sign and is weird and challenging. The pool had become a ritual bath with two enormous temples on either side to the God of Healing and the God of Fortune. But why does Jesus only heal 1? A guy who has been there 38 years. He responds to the one who is front of him. He doesn't heal them all though - there were probably many many people desperate for healing. Mike tackles some interesting questions.

What's in Glyn's bag? Glyn uses one of his great stories about an eventful recent trip to Liverpool. John was bloved of Jesus and one of the youngest disciples - his gospel was essentially stories he told his followers that they wrote down. The text tells of an official who wanted Jesus to come back with him and heal his son. He wanted Jesus to work on his terms. We all love signs and they give us encouragement. We have to be sure we are more interested in the man than the miracle. Gods plan is not sign after sign after sign it is a relationship. We look for the signs and wonders - but not after the God who makes them. If you are carrying a bag around with you - will you put the bag down and open your hand so you can hold the hand of God who will meet you?

Anna kicks off the series about the signs in John's gospel that tell us more about Jesus with this famous Sunday school story. This sign is about the grace of the gospel , the good news that Jesus loves us, that God loves us. The wine he makes is the finest, the tastiest and there is a lot of it - over 600 litres or 400 bottles! How often do we try to do everything in our own strength rather than throwing ourselves onto God's mercy and drawing on his strength ? An abundant strength.
