In this episode, guest co-host Alex Alt (Slydog Music Cast) and me discuss The Mighty Van Halen, whose debut album was released 45 years ago.
To say that Van Halen changed rock would be understating things a bit: Eddie Van Halen's emergence signaled a new talent on the scene, one whose influence would profoundly affect the rock scene as we know it. Factor in the drumming of Eddie's brother Alex, the angelic harmonies and meaty bass lines of Michael Anthony, not to mention the over the top lyrics, vocals, and image of David Lee Roth, and it's no wonder why Van Halen has gone on to become one of the greatest bands of all-time.
We examine the band's original era, spanning 1978-1984, taking a look at all six of the band's classic albums. We leave no stone unturned, as Van Halen tore up the charts and tore it up in concert halls across the world.

In this episode, we take a look at the various attempts at a Led Zeppelin reunion, beginning with their appearance at 1985's Live Aid concert, and culminating in the 2007 concert that would comprise 2012's Celebration Day video and album.
Led Zeppelin had a considerable legacy to live up to and we go in depth, discussing the ups, downs, and what worked and what didn't work. But it has a happy ending of sorts with the 2007 concert, which solidified Led Zep's reputation as one of the greatest live acts of all time.

With this episode, Guest Co-Host Julian Gill (KISS FAQ Podcast, Aerosmith on Tour 1973-85) and I discuss those lads from Sheffield, England, Def Leppard. We discuss their meteoric rise in the 80s as one of hard rock and metal's premiere bands. A band that had many great highs and some crushing lows along their rocket to fame.
But ultimately, their music endures and we go deep into their 80s heyday and its impact on the music and video scene of the day and how that music has become a classic soundtrack to the lives of their fans.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into Led Zeppelin DVD, the band's opening of their video vault in 2003. We talk about this treasure trove of vintage Zeppelin video, including the Royal Albert Hall 1970, Earls Court 1975, and Knebworth 1979 shows, among others.
This DVD shows why Zeppelin was one of the greatest rock bands ever to hit the concert stage and this DVD set was an eye-opener, as Led Zeppelin was finally letting their fans see these rare, classic shows.

What started out as an attempt to document Led Zep's concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1973 became a film that featured fantasy sequences, backstage drama, and yes, the songs and music that propelled Led Zeppelin to become one of the biggest bands of all-time.
And while Zeppelin manager Peter Grant said "It was the most expensive home movie ever made," it's a time capsule that could only have been made in the 1970s. We talked through all the scenes and all the songs -- It was a Whole Lotta Fun.

While he's best known for his hits as a solo artist and lead singer for The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald had a wide ranging effect on the musical genre known as "Yacht Rock."
He played and sang on many artists' recordings, such as Steely Dan and is the patron saint of "Yacht Rock." We examine his reign as king during the heyday of the genre, spanning the late 70s to the mid 80s.
In this episode, we examine one of Led Zeppelin's most eclectic and enduring works, Houses Of The Holy. This album traverses a wide rangs of musical styles (prog, reggae, funk, & rock, among others) and finds the band exploring new techniques and approaches to their craft.

We also discuss the live recordings Yessongs and Progeny, and pay tribute to Yes drummer Alan White,, who recently passed away. We talk about how Alan came into Yes right as the Close To The Edge tour began and would stay in the band for 50 years. Truly a talented drummer who put his stamp on this iconic band.
50 years ago, at the peak of their live performance heyday, Led Zeppelin recorded two sold out shows at the L.A. Forum. 31 years later, a live album was compiled from those shows and released as How The West Was Won.
In this episode, we talk about this great document of live Led Zeppelin at their finest. Led Zeppelin was giving their audiences their money's worth and this classic live album captures every note in all it's excessive glory.

In 1977, KISS topped the Gallup Poll as most popular group and they were at the peak of their powers, ruling the roost with not one, but TWO albums that year, Love Gun and Alive II, not to mention a merchandising empire that was building KISS's legend....not to mention their bank accounts!
For this episode, I brought back two heavy hitters, The KISS Room's Matt Porter and KISStory Science Theatre's Lee Conrad! I had a lot of fun yapping about KISS with these two and it was great re-examining this pivotal period in KISStory!

Led Zep takes us on some left turns here and we try to keep up with each and every one of them as we go track by track through this classic work.
This is one of Zep's most eclectic albums, with a diversity of styles and instrumental approaches that show their willingness to explore uncharted musical territory, yet make it accessible and put the unique Zeppelin stamp on it.

Guest Co-Host Terry Hamblin and I delve into The Blues Brothers -- the music & the movie!
When original Saturday Night Live cast members Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi turned their passion for rhythm & blues music into a musical act, they became their alter egos, Jake & Elwood Blues, and brought along some of the all-time greatest r&b musicians into a musical act that set both the music charts and movie charts on fire and created a pop culture phenomenon.
After a couple of appearances on SNL, Aykroyd and Belushi left the show and along with director John Landis, created one of the greatest cult classic movies of all time, 1980's The Blues Brothers. Along with cameos by r&b greats James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, & Aretha Franklin, as well as Blues Brothers band members such as Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Matt "Guitar" Murphy and Paul Shaffer among others, they pooled their respective musical and comedic talents together and came out with a raucous musical comedy that would resonate years and decades later.
Listen on as we recall such immortal movie lines such as "Lots of space in this mall!" and of course, "We're on a mission from God!"

What started as a semi-serious discussion about The Beatles’ Get Back documentary devolved into Guest Co-Host Jeff Harris (Behind The Grooves) and myself doing Beatle “Scouser” accents, sidetrips into “what ifs” as Doobie Brother Michael McDonald taking a stab at “Let It Be” and so much silliness…well, It’s All Too Much to take, really!
But we had so much fun going off the rails as we discussed this, that I had to frequently ask, “Wait, what the hell are we talking about?” And you know on that on this show, that’s a good thing.

We'll look at the evolution (or Dio-volution) of this rock and roll slap-fight in the rock press as well as examine its aftermath, when both singers forged solo careers after leaving Black Sabbath.

Since we're a positive podcast, we decided to take a look at two albums by the band Yes, one of the early innovators of progressive rock.
Both of these albums were game changers for the band and introduced a new sound and era for the band: 1971's The Yes Album and 1983's 90125.
As the history of Yes is full of zigs, zags, and personnel changes galore, we focus mainly on these two albums, but you know how we are, so expect a zig or zag of our own along the way.
