Hello everyone and welcome to episode 60 of the Life Right Here podcast - it’s been nearly 6 weeks since my last episode and over a month since my silent hiking and meditation retreat which I promised a follow up chat about in my last episode but there’s good reason why I’ve not been on the mic and in your ears and I just realised I’ve only done 10 episodes this year and it’s not long until August so my apologies - I’m still here but have just needed some space.

If you’re on my mailing list you would’ve received a fairly candid email from me last week about the struggles I’ve been facing with perimenopausal symptoms but in particular anxiety that is wiping me out at certain points in my cycle so I’d also like to share a little about that today and what I plan to do about it because I always have a plan!

So this episode is a bit of a ‘behind the scenes of my life’ one with some detail about the retreat and the lessons learned that I’m still integrating, the inner shifts that are taking place and also as I said the challenges of my life of late.

Let me know your thoughts and reflections on this episode. DM on Insta @amala_yoga_shala or email me here.

Go gently, slow your pace and remember to rest.
I'll be back soon.

Welcome to episode 59 of The Life Right Here podcast - I’m thrilled to be back with you for a solo episode - it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these.

I was listening to a popular podcast the other day and Kathryn May was being interviewed about burnout - she is the author of the book Wintering (which I’ve reflected on in episode 36 and I’ll link to that episode here) but she said something about going on a meditation retreat or course and it was a man running it and she decided that many of these practices where you need say 20 minutes twice a day must have been devised by men who had no children to look after. That essentially as women we had to find stillness and beauty amidst the daily chores and the doing - that we couldn’t possibly find 20 minutes to ourselves.

And I do agree with that to some extent - there’s of course a place for that - I mean that’s the whole basis of mindfulness practice - Thich Nhat Hanh himself taught that washing the dishes is meditation - however I do think there are other things that get in the way of women in particular but humans in general making space for actually being still. And that’s what I’d like to reflect on in today’s episode and give my perspective and encourage you to create those spaces in your day.

Share your thoughts on Instagram and tag me @amala_yoga_shala or email me amalayogashala@gmail.com I'd love to hear what gets in the way of you making time to be still!

Have a beautiful week.

Welcome to episode 58 of the LRH podcast - I have a very special interview for you today with one of my teachers of Ayurveda. I had a number of personal questions to ask Katie Rose and it was so wonderful to learn more about her journey in yoga and her views on activism and the path of Bhakti yoga.

Katie Rose is a yoga teacher, ayurveda guide, doula and author with over 25 years of experience in the world of wellness. Katie was the manager of the prestigious TriYoga centre in London before moving to Sydney and opening Samadhi Yoga in 2004 followed by Jivamukti Yoga Sydney which at its peak was a four-studio business and is still a thriving community today.

Her popular online courses have helped hundreds of women from all over the world to empower themselves. She is the founder and host of the annual Bhakti Women Online Yoga Summit and the author of several internationally available books including ‘Mindful Living’ and ‘The Yoga of Birth’. Most recently she authored 'Trust Life, Trust Yourself, Find Peace' .

Katie helps women go from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to living a life that is vibrant, creative and abundant. She lives in Sydney, Australia with her five children in a loud and busy household where her meditation practice keeps her sane!

Katie Rose is someone who’s teachings and offerings I just so admire. I’m thrilled to welcome her to the podcast and share this conversation with you - it’s a glimpse into the journey and life of someone who has lived and breathed yoga and Ayurveda for a lifetime (or perhaps many life times)...I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with her.

Check out her website bhaktirose.com.au or connect with her on Instagram @bhakti.rose to discover all the wonderful work she is doing in this space.

Welcome to Episode 56 of The Life Right Here.

Today’s episode is inspired by my trip to Japan and particularly by a challenging part of my trip that I wanted to share with you and what I learned from it.

The practice of yoga and meditation is ultimately about gaining clarity and awareness, first in the body but then in the mind and in turn this changes how we show up in the world.

As a starting point for this story I want to share an idea from Jack Kornfield a meditation teacher, clinical psychologist, trained Buddhist monk and spiritual teacher.

The reason I share this is because I read this passage not long before I went to Japan and was contemplating what it might mean for my life and it came in very useful when I was over there and faced with some challenging sleeping conditions.

'Without mindfulness we will simply reinforce our conditioned habits and desires, keeping ourselves stuck in their patterns, giving unconscious power to the forces of grasping and anger. With mindfulness, our actions can lead us to Freedom.' A Path with Heart: A Guide through the Perils and Promises of Spiritual LifeReflective Questions to Consider:

  • Can you pause next time you’re reacting to something with anger or a sense of grasping and just sit and breathe, step away from the situation and choose a different response? How can you create space around it?
  • You might ask what pattern is playing out in my reactivity here? Or ‘What story am I telling myself?’ ‘How am I contributing to me own suffering here?’
  • Is there something playing out unconsciously here that I can shed some more light on?

Please get in touch with questions or insights - I'd love to hear from you. Email me here amalayogashala@gmail.com or DM on Instagram @amala_yoga_shala.

Welcome to episode 55 of The Life Right Here podcast.

As I sat in the surf this morning I began to just run some ideas around in my head as to the topic of today’s podcast and I settled on a short episode explaining and reflecting on The 3 Gunas or qualities of nature that are the basis of the teachings of Ayurveda (and Yoga).

These are at the forefront of my mind right now as I prepare for my third module of Yoga Therapy study coming up in April. And one of our pre-reading tasks is to read Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita - it’s all about the gunas - and as I have I've been reconsidering my own understanding of the gunas and how they play out and are impacting my own life right now.

In this episode we learn about Sattva, Rajas and Tamas and their characteristics as well as reflect on the predominant quality in our life right now and how we might bring balance.

In the Episode I suggest a number of other episodes that may be of support in further exploring some of the suggestions I give for cultivating Sattva Guna in your daily life.
Here are the links to those:
Episode 25 The Tranquil Posture
Episode 26 The Art of Pratyahara
Episode 34 The Medicine of Silence
Episode 8 Guided Practice: Brahmari Pranayama
Episode 5 Guided Practice: Bija Mantra 'Hreem'
Episode 11 So Ham

I'd love to hear your reflections on the 3 Gunas and how they' re impacting your body, mind and heart right now. Message me on Insta @amala_yoga_shala or email me amalayogashala@gmail.com to let me know your thoughts or questions.

Have a beautiful week. Thanks for listening.

A guided practice for you (under 10 minutes) for you to connect with being content with what is - right here - as things are.

This practice uses breath, contempation on the concept of Santosha - contentment - as well as affirmation to give you permission to just be...and find peace no matter what's going on around you.

Take time for yourself this week to notice that life is good enough as is.

Let me know how you used this practice, what came up for you or anything that you found challenging here. Email me here or message me on Insta.

Hello friends welcome to episode 53 of The Life Right Here podcast.
I am relieved to get this episode to you today after a shaky start to the week and it is actually the events of the past couple of days that have inspired this episode (I had another topic planned but I thought nope I want to explore this - even if it’s just for myself to work it through) but I actually think it is something that you’ll find interesting to reflect on for yourself.

In this episode I recount what happened on Tuesday that culminated in the realisation 'I don't know who I am if I'm not productive' and that lead to some deep reflection on my part. I've related the events of this week and my own discomfort around it to the yogic concepts of unchanging awareness and Santosha - contentment.

I'd love to hear your thoughts or if any of what I was experiencing has happened to you and how you got yourself back on track. DM me on Insta here or email me HERE.

Have a great end to the week and remember your week was enough.

Episode 52 is a short guided practice - take 10 minutes to yourself - to reconnect to your centre of personal power, your inner knowing and begin to re-prioritise what is important to you. What you want to centre your life around this year.

There are a number of sources of inspiration in this practice including:
Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estés' work Women Who Run with the Wolves
Maya Tiwari and her book Women's Power to Heal through Inner Medicine and the quote by Jack Kornfield from last episode:
‘When we honour our body with our attention, we begin to reclaim our feelings, our instincts, our life.’I thank my teachers with the deepest gratitude for their knowledge, wisdom and generosity.

Hello my friends and welcome to episode 51 of The Life Right Here podcast - it’s great to be back for a fresh new year in 2024.

This episode is inspired by the reflections and sharing that took place last Friday evening at my Align and Shine workshop - I wanted to share a quote that I used as a point of discussion - in the context of a larger passage shared from the book Women Who Run with the Wolves by Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes and the quote is this:

Psychically, we become used to the shocks aimed at our wild natures. We adapt to violence against the psyche’s knowing nature. We try to be good while normalising the abnormal. As a result, we lose our power to flee. We lose our power to lobby for the elements of soul and life we find most valuable...’In this episode we explore powerful ideas and themes contained in this quote and begin to apply them to our own lives. I get pretty fired up so if you want to message me on Insta here or email me here please do - I'd love to hear your perspective - especially if you disagree with me on anything here!! Let's have a respectful debate. I want to normalise women having aging faces rather than support feeling they need to achieve unrealistic beauty standards that keep them feeling they're not enough. We are enough. And the world needs women feeling MORE than enough so that they can bring their powerful presence and light to the world.

There are so many ways our society has come to normalise the abnormal and I've picked a few simple ones that came to mind - of course the unfolding of the tragedy in Gaza for the Palestinian (and Israeli) people is a major example of this. Though many of us oppose it of course and are heartbroken by what's happening the fact remains that it's being allowed to continue while we all look on. There's nothing more abnormal than that.

Thanks for being here.
See you soon.

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 49 of The Life Right Here podcast - I can’t believe we’ll make it to 50 before the end of the year…it should’ve come up sooner had I been recording a podcast every week but I don’t know about you - the last couple of months of this year have been a bit heavy and I’ve had to take a little more time with things. But we will get to 50 by next week!! What a milestone.

In today's episode I share 5 ways that I am trying to allow my body's voice and wisdom to be heard in order to inform my decisions in order to build trust in this physical guidance system and wisdom.

The things that stop us from living a 'fully inhabited' life

Hello and welcome to episode 43 of The Life Right Here podcast.

It’s been a fortnight since the last episode and I apologise for that but I had a little family trip to the Victorian High Country - we stayed in the beautiful Alpine town of Bright and went snowboarding at Fall’s Creek which inspired the topic for today’s episode of ‘Staying with Challenges’ - my body is still feeling the effects of an incredibly challenging (brutal!) sport.

In this episode I recount the fear and discomfort of learning something new (and dangerous) and how I moved through this.  I also discuss ways we can apply the yogic concept of Dvesha -  aversion or repulsion - to our daily life when faced with things that don't feel good.

I end with my lessons learned and some reflective questions that may support you to face those things you're avoiding and be in the discomfort that comes with pushing yourself in new endevours.

As always I'd love to hear your thoughts or any aha moments you had. Tag me on insta @jala_yoga_shala or send me an email jalayogabyron@gmail.com.

Welcome to Episode 42 of The Life Right Here.

Today’s episode covers:

  • Why ‘performing’ asana is not enough if Yoga is to be a spiritual practice.
  • What our yoga practice is training us for - what’s the purpose?
  • Necessary aspects of spiritual practice if we’re really serious about walking a spiritual path towards peace.

Reflective Questions at the end of the episode:

  • If you are practising yoga does your practice include time to be still and to notice what’s present right here in this moment. Does it honour whatever is arising? Do you adapt your practice to suit what’s present?
  • If you attend a class that does not give much time for stillness are you incorporating or how can you incorporate stillness into your life in other small ways?
  • Have you committed to a path of practice - in some way - a daily practice - that will gently allow you to take a closer look internally? That supports you to open to and be with whatever is right here? Or are you practising sporadically or in bursts?
  • What are you allowing to be more important than your physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing right now? Are you ok with that?

I'm just a message away if you need support of guidance! Message me on Insta @jala_yoga_shala or contact me via email here.

Have a great week.

Today’s episode is inspired by a coaching client I recently had a session with and it got me thinking about my own journey in making changes that were needed in my life and how that took a lot of courage and truthfulness on my part and actually a willingness to take responsibility for how my life was playing out and how I was internally - to get really real with myself.

In this episode we explore a quote from the book You Are the Mountain by Brianna Wiest.I discuss from a Yogic perspective:
Satya - truthfulness
Taking full responsibility for our lives
Stillness and silence as a necessary part of the truth-telling process
Self-compassion along the way

Here is a link to my Self Compassion practice way back in episode 16.

A short and sweet guided practice for the Crescent Moon phase of the lunar cycle. Includes 2 minutes of silence to follow on from last week's episode on The Medicine of Silence. Enjoy xx

View Details

Welcome to episode 34 of The Life Right Here podcast. Thank you for joining me today - this topic The Medicine of Silence is one I’ve had in mind for a while now and now more than ever I think it’s really relevant. As the world gets noisier.

My ideas around silence have been building since I was a teenager I think! As a highly sensitive person (and some of you might identify as highly sensitive too) I am someone who craves silence and solitude - I like being on my own regularly - and I need it actually to re-calibrate but I think in a modern society that is filled with noise and over stimulation - whether you are highly sensitive or not - regular silence is a necessity and I don’t just mean when you go to bed at night. I mean throughout the waking hours of your daily life.

Just pause to think about that - do you consciously cultivate silence in your daily life? We tend to fill our silences with music, podcasts, TV or whatever screen we’re watching.

In this episode I share some of a poem called Sharing Silence by Gunilla Norris as well as research supporting the benefits of silence for our brain, mental and physical health. How might you cultivate just 1 minute of silence each day - and treasure it?

Let me know how you go!

Hello my friends and welcome to episode 32 of The Life Right Here podcast - this was meant to come out last week but I have been through a bit of a wobbly period lately which I’m going to discuss on the show this week because I want to keep this podcast real and relatable and actually show by my own example how I try to get back on track when I’m feeling a little off centre. Or in this case - way off centre.

So this episode will involve a little bit of storytelling about what was going on for me last week (when I had to give up on the podcast coming out) and then some real life practical application of yoga and Ayurveda that I applied to my own life and which has made me feel MUCH better! And I hope may be of use to you in this Autumn season.

In this episode: What was going on for me last week in terms of symptoms of a major Vata imbalance.
What are the doshas and what is vata dosha in particular?
What were my symptoms of vata imbalance?
The specific actions I took to mitigate vata and get back on track

I hope this episode doesn’t feel like too much of a repeat on the previous episode but I thought it relevant - since I’d just done the episode on Autumn being the vata season and how to maintain balance in Autumn that for me to then go completely out of whack in terms of balance and feel actually fairly taken aback by it I just wanted to share that even someone who teaches this and loves this wisdom can be taken down by essentially - doing too much. But it’s so empowering when you have these tools at hand to just hit pause and think ok I know what to do here so just do it.

Have a wonderful week and I’d love to hear from you - was there anything in this episode you can relate to? Your physical space getting chaotic and mirroring your internal space or maybe some anxiety or sleeplessness. Have you tried any of these tips and what works for you?

Hello my friends and welcome to episode 31 of The Life Right Here podcast. I’m excited today to bring you a short and sweet Seasonal Session episode where I will give 5 hot tips for staying balanced and grounded during the season of Autumn according to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda.

Starting to learn a little about Ayurveda can really take our yoga practice and our life to another level of awareness and greater wellbeing - for me Ayurveda is about balance - that is looking what qualities are present in my body, mind, lifestyle and ensuring that there is enough of the opposite quality to maintain balance and health.

Tune in for super simple and actionable ways to feel balanced and steady during the season of Autumn.

And if you're in the Byron Shire or surrounds I have 2 spots remaining for my Seasonal Yoga Intensive at South Golden beach just north of Byron Bay. It’s running May 1st to May 5th - it’s 3 early mornings of yoga for Autumn as well as support during the week to make changes to your routines for the cooler months.

Each participant receives a companion guide to Autumn as well as reflective prompts for journalling to really dive deep into their practice on and off the mat. The theme is release and restore in line with the energy of this season - of letting go - as nature does in Autumn and restoring our vital energy.

Today's episode is a guided practice to bring stillness, awareness and steadiness to the body and to begin to listen to its wisdom. Episode 29 explores the theme of Attending to the Body - you may wish to listen to it if you haven't already in conjunction with this practice.

The following words have been used in the guided practice and are taken from the book Anam Cara by John O'Donohue:

“The body is very truthful… you know your body rarely lies. Your mind can deceive you and put all kinds of barriers between you and your nature but your body does not lie. Your body tells you, if you attend to it, how your life is and whether you are living from your soul or from the labyrinths of your negativity.”

AND

“To spend this time in silence before the mystery of your body brings you towards wisdom and holiness.”

I'd love to hear what your body is telling you about your life.

Hello friends!

Today’s episode takes inspiration from a short passage from the book Anam Cara by John O’Donohue - he’s a teacher of celtic spirituality and a poet and I’m sure I’ve used his words before in this podcast, I’ve been taking a lot of inspiration from his words of late and my recent retreat actually was heavily inspired by his writings.

In this episode I’ll read this short passage and then we’ll reflect a little on how this might be useful in our own life - you know I love to make sure that what’s in this podcast does not just remain a reflection or an idea but can be put into practice somehow to make a lasting impact in your daily life, health and wellbeing. There’s no point otherwise in these teachings.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and what your body is telling you!
And if you're AT ALL interested in coaching why not take a tiny step closer and find out if it might be something that would benefit you? You can book at 20 minute discovery call HERE and once you do that I'll send a pre-coaching survey to get you reflecting about what coaching might involve for you. It's obligation free and I DO NOT use sleazy sales tactics to get you to lock it in - there's no pressure.

I hope to hear from you soon - send my a DM on Insta and let me know how the episode landed!

Much love

Welcome to episode 28 of the Life Right Here podcast!  Today’s episode is a little bit of a reflection or behind the scenes look at my recent retreat at Nobby’s Creek in Northern NSW.

And the reason I decided to talk about this topic is because I’m still on a bit of a high after a fabulous time with an amazing group of women and this retreat has been a long time in the making. It’s something I’ve wanted to bring to life for years and so it was a very proud moment to get this off the ground and happening and to have such a wonderful time away.

I share a little behind the scenes of what to expect on retreat with me as well as my lessons learned and tips for bringing something to life!

Episode 27  is a short and sweet "senses" meditation - inspired by John O'Donohue's work and particularly a line from his book Anam Cara about 'the harvest of divinity that is always secretly gathering within us' when we tune into our senses.

In the teachings of Yoga our senses are considered gateways to the Divine but we often overload them in modern life. This practice follows last week's episode (I encourage you to tune into that one - episode 26) which was around hitting pause and withdrawing the senses.

Enjoy this time to yourself to tune into and rest the senses and the play of life that's always right here.

Visit my website to find out about other ways to "hit pause" via my upcoming offerings or contact me here with any questions, feedback or to request a specific topic or practice. Maybe you can join us on the mat weekly at South Golden Beach - Byron Shire, NSW.

  • Still 2 places available on my Inner Medicine Retreat for women at Heart and Soul Retreat Space Nobby's Creek, NSW from 16-19 March 2023.

I hope to see you soon.

Hello and welcome to episode 26 of the Life Right Here podcast!

To me pressing pause in our life can be done regularly throughout the day to recalibrate and reset or refresh our senses. And one of the limbs of yoga that best guides us to do this in my opinion is pratyahara or withdrawal of the senses. Pratyahara is the 5th limb of the 8 limbed path of hatha yoga and is a bridge between the more external focused 3rd and 4th limbs and the internal focused 6th and 7th limbs of Yoga.

In this episode I give my favourite ways to withdraw the senses and here are some of the practices I mention:
Yoga Nidra
The Tranquil Posture

And if you feel that pressing pause on your life is well overdue and want to do that in a more substantial way may I recommend you check out my upcoming retreats - the next one is March 16-19th at Nobby’s Creek in Northern NSW - a beautiful retreat centre - heart and soul retreat space, plenty of yoga, mantra meditation, sharing circles, deep reflection and rest as well as nourishing vego food and Kirtan with my beautiful friends from Krishna Village on the Saturday afternoon - check my website or Instagram @jalayogaandcoaching for full details and sneak peeks of the venue - there’s only a few spots left! I also offer payment plans over a longer period if that will support you to attend just ask me about it.

Have a beautiful week and don't forget to hit pause!!

Hello my friends and welcome to episode 24 of the Life Right Here podcast - thank you for joining me each week and helping to spread the word about this lovely little podcast.

Look this one is a little late really - a seasonal session for Summer, however I have rationalised that we still have at least a month of hot weather left I reckon and here in the Northern Rivers of NSW it has been SO hot the past few weeks so this may just continue to come in handy for you if you are someone who feels the heat and these tips can also come in handy at any times you are feeling excess heat in the body such as if you are experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.

The Seasonal Sessions provide some protocols and guidelines each season for how to bring or maintain balance using the tools of yoga and ayurveda so tune in for my top 5 (actually I snuck a 6th one in) ways to beat the heat via food, drinks, early rising / exercise adjusments, napping, self-massage and the way you lay in bed!

Enjoy! And if you're keen to join us Feb 20-24 in the Sadhana Series - to create new habits that feel nourishing and grounding then sign up here! And join the pop-up Facebook group here. I hope you'll join us.

Hello friends and welcome to episode 22 of The Life Right Here podcast.

Inspiration for this episode comes from a quote that came to me many years ago in a bar of organic raw chocolate – an Easter present from one of my students and it’s something I’ve contemplated ever since at various points and what it could possibly mean for my life:

'As you walk upon the sacred Earth treat each step as a prayer.'

It sounds so reverant and the mind boggles at what our world could look like if we just followed this one simple and to me, profound, instruction.

In this episode I reflect on 5 ways that we might bring this quote to life and offer the following questions for your reflection:

What does this quote bring up in you?

Do you resonate with it or does it feel foreign or impossible? Why might that be?

In what ways do you see sacredness as present in your daily life?

How do you honour this sacredness?

What would your life look like, feel like and sound like if you were living each step as a prayer?

I hope your reflections get you a little closer to this beautiful thought – that our life could be lived as a prayer. Let me know your thoughts via DM @jalayogaandcoaching
or contact me here via email. Check out my 1:1 Coaching Program The Life Right Here - a 3 month, high level support coaching journey to bring these concepts to life!

Thanks for tuning in. I’ll be back next week.

I have a very special episode for you today - our first episode back for 2023 - and I know you will love this one as I loved recording it - you will be able to hear the excitement (or maybe nervousness ;-)) in my voice at recording my first interview for the Life Right Here podcast!

So my very first interviewee is Sarah Worboys. Sarah is a qualified and experienced naturopath with a special interest in children’s and women’s health. She is also an ongoing coaching client of mine and now a dear friend - we’ve worked together over a number of years.

We talk about turning inward to ask "What do I need?" on any given day, about truth telling and what the term "Right Medicine" might mean as well as Sarah's journey into naturopathy and how she supports women to gain greater health and vitality inside and out.

I can’t wait for you to gain insight into how naturopathy can support you - your health and overall wellbeing as a whole person.
If you’d like to connect with Sarah for a consulthere is a link to book online.

And if you'd like to learn more about coaching with me to gain deeper insight, peel back the layers and find more peace, presence and power then take the first step by reading more here.

Reach out HERE if I can be of support or if you have any questions or message me on Insta @jalayogaandcoaching.

We made it to 20 episodes this year woohoo. I’m so proud - it feels like a good milestone to end the year with.

This is the final episode for 2022 and I’ve actually decided to do a more personal episode for our final one. The end of a year is a great time to reflect on the year that was and to celebrate the wins and process the lessons learned that you’ll take forward into the new year.

It’s been a massive year for so many of us - well a massive few years really don’t you agree and I think it’s always powerful to process and celebrate at the end of the year so that we can move into 2023 with a clean slate.

So in this episode I'm sharing challenges (warning there is tears!), proud moments and lessons to take into 2023 that may just be relevant for you also.

I also encourage you to take a little time to reflect on your own year. What are you proud of or celebrating? What challenged you? What are the lessons you’re taking into 2023?

I mentioned my upcoming retreats and workshops in 2023 - more details coming soon here on my website so check back shortly. As usual I'd love to hear your reflections on 2022 so be sure to message on Instagram or email me here. I'd love to hear from you!

And don't forget I am taking enrolments for my 1:1 coaching program The Life Right Here starting end of January. Read all about it here and do reach out if you feel called or have any questions. I've had a number of women sign up to make their own health and wellbeing their top priority in 2023 so that they can continue to show up for others.

Thanks for having me in your ears these past few months and for taking your time to tune in. I look forward to our journey together in 2023 and I hope you have a restful, nourishing and joyful Christmas and New Year. I’ll be back soon my friends.
Bye for now.

Welcome to episode 18 of The Life Right Here. We’re in practice mode today and i thought what better practice is there for this time of year than a relaxing and rejuvenating Yoga Nidra.

In this episode I explain a little background to Yoga Nidra and then we’ll dive into the practice and as usual I will record the yoga nidra separately as a BONUS episode so that once you’ve heard this intro you could practice yoga nidra a few times a week until the end of the year and not have to listen to the intro every time!

Yoga nidra is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation - I hope you enjoy.

As always I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.  Message me on Insta @jalayogaandcoaching or email me here. And don't forget to check out my 1:1 coaching program - a 3 month journey of high level support and accountability to bring peace, presence and power to your daily life. Welcome to episode 17 of the Life Right Here podcast - we’re circling back today to the topic of Minimising Suffering and this is Part 2. I don’t know how many episodes there’ll be on this - there’s so much in it. But we’ll keep coming back every few episodes just to keep momentum going but also to break it up a bit.

I want to focus today on Samskara duhkha - as in my experience this type of suffering is particularly insidious and difficult to eradicate because the patterns of our mental field are built up over long periods of time without us even being aware of them. And also because I have felt my own samskaras - my habitual patterns of thinking resurfacing again recently and I’ve had to take a closer look.

This episode discusses one of the afflictions of the mind (kleshas) as described in the Yoga tradition - abhinivesha - fear of loss.

I'd love to know your reflections and what came up for you in thinking about how fear is playing out in your life right now.

As mentioned at the start of the episode I have 2 spots opening in January for 1:1 coaching in my program The Life Right Here. Check out details here on my website and message me on Instagram or email me here to have a chat about whether coaching is right for you. It's the perfect way to support yourself as you move into 2023.

Blessings for a beautiful week.

Welcome to Episode 15 of The Life Right Here podcast. It’s time to practise!!

Last week’s episode (Episode 14) was PART 1 in a series on the theme of suffering and looked at 3 types of suffering as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. If you haven’t listened to that I recommend it as the more awareness and language we have around suffering the more it helps us to realise where we get caught up in it.

But it’s not necessary to listen to it first - this week’s episode is a simple practice to use during painful moments.

Don't forget I have recorded the practice without this introduction  as a BONUS for you to jump into at any time.

As always I'd love to hear the benefits you felt as a result of practising.

Message me on Instagram @jalayogaandcoaching or email me here.

Have a wonderfully compassionate week.

Welcome my friends - it’s episode 14 of the Life Right Here podcast and this week marks the first in a series of episodes around Suffering and ways we can prevent or minimise it in the future - which is surely a desirable topic for every human being on this planet because WE ALL suffer in some form or another. So this is PART 1.

In an effort to keep this simple and digestible as well as easily reflected upon - I’m just going to start with describing 3 types of suffering (duhkha) as described in the yoga tradition and present 3 questions for you for contemplation.

Let me know - I’d love to hear - those sources of suffering that you were able to identify and name and how even just naming these has had a small impact. Thank you for listening - please share this with anyone in your life that you think might benefit from this ancient wisdom.

Message me on instagram @jalayogaandcoaching or email me jalayogabyron@gmail.com with any thoughts or questions.

Have a great week and remember “pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”.

Welcome to Episode 13 of The Life Right Here podcast. It's a practice episode for you this week which brings to life the practice described in last week's episode Lean Towards the Positive. This practice is one of contemplation and absorption in bodily sensation and emotion - these are two ways in Hatha yoga of channeling our attention which when left to its own devices tends to hold onto the "negative".

In doing this practice we don’t dismiss or disregard any challenges we are currently facing but when we solely focus on those we feel the impact of that. This practice reminds us to regularly turn to or lean towards those things right here that are going right, that are a step in the right direction, that can make us feel good - even when it feels like everything is falling down around us.

This practice supports us to continue to find hope amidst the hardship and let in the beauty.

Find a quiet spot and tune in.

As always I'd love to hear from you and your experience of the practice or even those things you brought to mind and let soak in.

Message me on Insta @jalayogaandcoaching or email me here.

Have a positive week friends.

Welcome my friends to episode 12 of The Life Right Here podcast.

This episode has been inspired by a very disheartening 24 hours…and it was a phone call from my mum that ended with “Don’t worry it’s only white ants” and us both exploding into laughter that made me think - I have to share this.

So this episode is the random sharing of a day that didn't go to plan - the kind of day where things just seem to escalate, with one challenging experience backing onto the next, where sometimes the only thing to do is laugh and maybe go to bed and hope that tomorrow is better.

However after I share my story of the 24 hours (of Wed-Thurs last week) I also want to share a practice that I learned via Rick Hanson - a psychologist and teacher of contemplative practice who has written many books. This practice he calls “Take in the Good” I’m going to share with you as it’s super powerful in times where you feel like everything is against you.

I’d love to hear if you’ve ever had a day where nothing seemed to go to plan! Message me on instagram or send me an email.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 11 is a practice session for you! This week I'm releasing to the podcast a recording that I did nearly 4 years ago now when my students encouraged me to record some of the mantras that I chant at the end of our Yoga classes.

At the time I was very nervous and a bit embarrassed and in fact just wanted to get it over with - sadly - rather than enjoy the experience.

This one "So Ham" pronounced "so hum" is a calming, nervous system soothing and universal mantra which translates as "I am that". It is wonderful to chant at times when we are feeling disconnected as a reminder that we are deeply connected to every living thing.

It is also said to be a natural mantra because it is present within everybody as the breath, with the sound of "so" during inhalation and "ham" during exhalation. As such, So'ham is a mantra that is chanted just by concentrating on the breath because the breath chants it naturally.

I have created a bit of a medley here as "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha" is also part of this chant which is an invocation to Ganesh which removes obstacles and ensures success. It is calming and grounding also.

You might play this in the evening for 5 minutes to settle before bed or with legs up the wall.

Welcome to episode 9 - Your Soul is Coming for You! We might think of the soul as light and love but this phrase to me has a fierceness, a relentlessness even - suggesting that we might think our soul is there to protect us and guide us, yes it is light and it is loving but it’s also there to call us out. To keep us on track. To make sure we head along the right path.

So this episode will be a call to listen, to be truthful with yourself and to check in with whether your behaviour is aligned with how and what you want to experience in this life. That you are in fact acknowledging the call of your soul voice - which is hard to do in a world that benefits from us being consistently externally distracted.

Here are the questions that I give you to reflect on at the end of this episode:

  1. In what ways do you hear the call of the old one? How is the old one showing up for you do you think?
  2. What is the old one calling you to or back to?
  3. What does it mean to be called home?
  4. Are you ignoring the call? How do you know you are ignoring it?
  5. Why are you ignoring the call?
  6. In what ways have you noticed that your soul is ‘coming for you’?
  7. What do you need to return to?
  8. How can you start this process of returning?

And if this episode has you realising "Yes it's time to make a change" send a message on Instagram @jalayogaandcoaching or flick me an email jalayogabyron@gmail.com - or check out my website jalayogaandcoaching.com.au to find how other clients have made incredible changes that are long-lasting via coaching with me. Many people find it a real challenge to make changes alone - don’t feel any judgement around that - but the great thing is that with a coach you have someone who’s got your back the whole way.
Many blessings for a powerful week.

Hello my friends and welcome to episode 8 of The Life Right Here - it’s practice time this week and the practice I have picked today relates perfectly to last episode’s topic of sleep. I’ll start with a little information on these benefits and explain the practice and then we’ll jump into the practice itself.

Welcome to episode 6 of The Life Right Here podcast - we’re back in lecture mode today to discuss all things sleep.

This is a topic very important to me as I’ve been a very light sleeper my whole life - being a highly sensitive person has a lot to do with that - and it became particularly important to me during those post-partum months when my beautiful baby (now 12 year old) Mali was a very erratic sleeper which had a huge impact on my physical and mental health.

I’ve experienced first hand what severe sleep deprivation can do. And I’m now coming into a phase of life at nearly 45 where sleep can also be impacted by common peri-menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia - it’s not happening yet but I’m highly aware it’s coming and I want to take great care to navigate this appropriately to safeguard my wellbeing and in turn that of my family.

Tune in and enjoy my top 5 tips to safeguard your sleep and in turn your vitality, joy and peace.

Welcome friends to Episode 5 of The Life Right Here. Today's episode is a guided practice - last week our main topic was Sadhana (any nourishing practice done with awareness that regenerates our energy and brings presence and peace to our body, mind and heart) and how it is a pillar of the coaching that I do and my own daily life and I wanted to introduce you to a practice that can be done as part of your own Sadhana!

Today’s practice is a therapeutic tool from Yoga & Ayurveda that I am SO in love with…Sanskrit Mantra which is my passion and my students love it too.

This episode has an intro to explain what mantra is and the benefits of this particular mantra and then we dive into the practice. Don't forget I always upload a BONUS episode of the practice that you can jump straight into at any point to make it easier to practice.

The practice itself ends up being about 10 minutes (in my intro I say about 6 minutes) and I have been having some trouble with a cough / throat issue this week and was having trouble sustaining the sound at some points (oh dear!) but as I mention in the episode this is not about what it sounds like - so I forged ahead.

Welcome to Episode 3 - this episode is mostly a guided practice. As I explained in the trailer episode of this podcast I will shift between a mini lecture style show and then a guided practice session because I love theoretical and traditional principles of both Yoga and Ayurveda but there’s no point in knowing all this “stuff” unless we can put it into meaningful practice in a way that is simple and ultimately improves or maintains our quality of life and wellbeing.

I have recorded this episode in full here with this intro but I have added in a bonus episode of  just the guided practice part so that you can skip this intro and dive into the practice as often as you like without having to physically skip through to it. I want to make this as easy to access as possible so that you are more likely to actually practice.
Practise daily or a few times a week to keep your intention 'alive'!
