EP.7 - Sam Mutimer, CEO of TTS - The Journey To Becoming A Maker Of Kings

It might sound like a made-up story, yet in 2007 an extreme slide tackle in an English National rugby game snapped Sam’s leg in two. Closely followed by a homemade YouTube video calling brands to leverage her new leg cast and bid for advertising space for a slot. The video went viral and earned over 27,000 views. Sam Mutimer has never regarded difficulty as a barrier to success. In fact, she relishes the challenge.

Trusted to advise on all things digital, as Social Media resident for Channel 7, The Financial Review, The Age and The Herald Sun, Sam has gained popularity as an expert, speaking at corporate events for top tier brands in Australia, England, Germany and South Africa. Her energy is infectious, her advice is sound, authentic and achievable.

As CEO of TTS, Sam has built her business over the last 11 years off the back of mistakes, learning curves and challenges inherently unique to working with technology in a constant state of flux: pivoting is necessary, refocusing is critical.

This is why Sam is so trusted by brands, athletes, CEO’s and corporates from myriad industries because she always finds an opportunity in a challenge.

Permanently guided by the ‘why’ Sam grows the narratives of brands through education, strategy, creativity, and partnerships and reminds everyone she meets that if you really want something bad enough, you’ll always find a way to make it happen.

Today’s episode features one of the most passionate, impactful & successful coaches in the World - Mike Way.

Mike is currently the Head Coach of the Men’s & Women’s Squash team at Harvard University.

Mike has held this prestigious role for 10 years and has lead his players in achieving some incredible results. Most recently with The Crimson completing its fifth straight undefeated season en route to its sixth consecutive National Championship trophy, & improving its CSA winning streak record to an outstanding 83 matches.

Prior to his coaching journey at Harvard, Mike was based in Toronto where he headed up the National Squash program and coached former World Champion Jonathan Power and other Canadian Greats in Graham Ryding, Shahier Razik, Marnie Ryding, Melanie Jans and many more.

His influence on the sport goes deeper than the results produced by his players. The influence he has on the athletes off the court is also prevalent and arguably his most impressive part of the ongoing legacy he is creating. MIke is an avid kite surfer and guitarist, and is always on the hunt to learn more and more.

He personally has had a major impact on my life and never fails to leave you better than when he found you in all interactions.

Today's conversation touches on some topics that are extremely close to my heart. I have the pleasure of discussing these issues with Cody Royle, who is achieving some significant recognition for his outside the box style approach to leadership, culture, well-being and performance.

Some of the topics we discuss include

  • There's no such thing as one culture. Micro cultures exist & matter.
  • Self Leadership and well-being is vital to your own success and culture
  • Self talk & behaviours are important communication tools that need attention
  • Getting through writer's block and how the flow cycle helps with this.
  • Normalising struggle as part of the human journey
  • Disrupting the norm in podcasting

Cody Royle is an author, podcast host, and football coach. Currently, he serves as the head coach of AFL Team Canada, the men's national program for Australian Rules football.

Cody is a standout voice in the crossover of leadership principles between sports and business. His first book, Where Others Won't, proposed that businesses should look at how pro sports teams focus on team dynamics and talent optimization in order to innovate.

The book includes in-depth interviews with the likes of Buffalo Sabres head coach Ralph Krueger and draws on many amazing lessons from some of the greatest leaders in sports from around the globe. The success of Where Others Won't spawned a one-of-a-kind podcast series of the same name and reached the Apple top 100 within a week of launch.

Cody has attracted an epic line up including former Colorado Avalanche head coach Tony Granato, Detroit Pistons legend Joe Dumars, New England Patriots executive Michael Lombardi, AFL legend Paul Roos & author of Legacy James Kerr, former Netflix CHRO Patty McCord, bestselling authors Adam Grant, and Daniel Pink. And I can’t recommend highly enough my 2 favourite episodes with Whoop creator Will Ahmed and the legendary Michael Gervais, High performance Psychologist.

Currently Cody is working on his 2nd book due for release in January 2021 titled "The Tough Stuff"
