This episode of The Hammock Hangers Podcast was recorded live at HangCon 2026, and it delivered exactly what you'd expect from a live audience and zero filter.

Skunkape and Pheonix took the stage to answer questions submitted by HangCon guests, covering a wide range of topics—and stirring up a little trouble along the way. Skunkape once again tried to get Pheonix in hot water by pushing him to reveal just how much money he's spent on gear over the past several years. Some questions are dangerous for a reason.

Not to be outdone, both Skunkape and Pheonix managed to land themselves in even more trouble by initially failing to give proper credit where it was due. A much-deserved shoutout goes to Deanna and Dawn for the incredible amount of work, dedication, and sacrifices they make to help put HangCon together year after year.

This episode is full of live-crowd energy, laughs, honest moments, and a reminder that HangCon wouldn't be what it is without the support behind the scenes.

🎙️ Recorded live at HangCon 2026 🔥 Guest-submitted Q&A 😂 Gear spending gone wrong ❤️ Well-earned appreciation for Deanna and Dawn

Classic Skunkape and Pheonix—live, unfiltered, and occasionally in trouble.

Our guest this week is Stephanie Arends.

Stephanie is the miCHILIgan group hang events coordinator and will soon be taking over from "Karla with a K." She is working on a YouTube channel focusing on camping and traveling for "non-traditional" campers. Meaning, tips and tricks for camping and traveling if you are disabled, overweight, solo, or advancing age. As of now she only has 1 full video and a couple of shorts, but she has other videos in the works around this topic coming soon.

As someone who is overweight and disabled, she quit camping for a long time. But when she found hammock camping, she found that it was her way to be able to get back outside and enjoy the outdoors!

So, in this episode we will be talking a lot on those topics, plus Stephanie has an interesting story about how her and her husband had to ride out a hailstorm and tornado in a cave while they were out on a camping trip.

Join Skunkape, Pheonix, and The Lord of Lollygag himself, Shug, as they recap their travel over to Denmark for the Danish Outdoor Festival and the first ever, HangCon Europe.

With the event hitting record numbers, 26,000 people coming to the event and over 300 hammocks hanging in the woods for the weekend, there were a lot of people for us all to talk to and hang out with.

We all had such a great time getting to meet all the new people and to learn about how they do hammock camping over there.

From the new family that we made to the food and sights of Denmark, we all had a great time and can't wait until next April when we head back over for the 2nd annual HangCon Europe in 2025.

This is a special episode that Pheonix and I recorded live while at HangCon 2024, so if the audio sounds a little different than usual, that would be why.

We decide that we wanted to do a live, in person recording at HangCon so that some of our guests could participate and ask questions if they wanted to. Some did, but most just sat and listened to Pheonix and I talk.

This week Pheonix is back with me and he has a special guest with him. He took a trip up to Virginia to spend a little time with a childhood friend, his beast friend to be exact, James Lawrie, and so he drug him on this weeks episode so we could all chat for awhile.

They tell us when and how they met, why they became best friends, and why they refer to themselves as twins.

Before we hear all of that though, of course you have to hear Pheonix and I talk about HangCon since it is only 6 days away from the release of this episode.

So let's get on with it so we can hear from James and AJ..

Our guest this week is the Founder & CEO of Tentsil, Alex Shirley-Smith. Tentsile is a blend of both a hammock and a tent. You are suspended in the air between trees like a hammock, but you have the space and room of a tent that can hold multiple people.

We have a nice chat with Alex, and hear about his passion for nature and the outdoors, along with how the idea for Tentsile was born.

We also talk about all of the great gear that they make and how modular it is.

Also, Tentsile is one of our donating partners of HangCon, and Alex has sent in one of the Trillium 3 person hammocks for the raffle, plus he has sent me one of the Stingrays to set up at the event for you to see and try out. There will also be a QR code that you can scan to get 30% off everything in your cart.

Let's get on with the episode so that you can hear more from Alex.

This is our 3rd episode that was recorded on-site at the Palmetto State Hangers, Fall Sprawl.

Our guest this week is David Hughes, or some of you may know him better as Phantom Grappler. David has been in the hammock community for quite some time now, and is the one that took over the Yates Hang so that it would keep going.

David is also a master of knots, so if you have been to some of the other hangs around and Phantom is there, I am sure he is giving a knot tying class somewhere.

Lets get on with our chat with, Phantom Grappler.

This is the 2nd of 3 episodes that Pheonix and I recorded onsite in South Carolina at the Fall Sprawl Hang that is hosted by The Palmetto State Hangers. Our guest for this episode is Jason Flowers, from Walhalla Hammocks and Outdoors.

Pheonix and I had tried to record with Jason several times a while back but ended up having technical issues every time. We figured that this time with us face to face, that we could make it happen.

Jason is another one of our good friends, and also one of our favorite vendors to just hang out with and chat some.

We find out from Jason how he got his start into the hammocking world, and how that lead him into making all of the top notch, awesome gear that he makes. Pheonix even talks about the custom hammock that Jason made for him that has some sentimental value to it.

Pheonix and Jason also team up against me when they start talking about their late night snacking on Crapple...... I mean, Scrapple....

Let's go ahead and get on with the episode so we can hear more from Jason.

This is 1 of 3 episodes that Pheonix and I recorded onsite in South Carolina at the Fall Sprawl Hang that is hosted by The Palmetto State Hangers.

Our guest for this first episode is Barry Garibaldi, or also known as Cajun. Barry is one of our good friends that is a huge supporter in the hammocking community. He is a gear rep for 8 cottage vendors that I am sure you are very familiar with and may even have some of their gear.

Barry makes it to about 32 hangs each year to show off some of the different gear from each of the vendors that he reps for, and helps people get set up with the gear that is right for them.

Let's go ahead and get on with the chat with Barry, and let him tell you how he got into hammocking, how he became a vendor rep, and why he loves going to all of the different hangs and helping others out with their gear choices.

Our guest this week is another YouTube sensation that has 14,000 subscribers and over 500 awesome videos uploaded that consist of everything from gear review videos to trip videos and how to videos. He has been making these great videos for everyone to watch since 2015.

His name is Mark Orton, or many of you may know him as Spiguyver, from the Spiguyver Backpacking channel on YouTube.

The episode is a little different this week because Skunkape had a change in his work schedule which prevented him from being able to be here, but Pheonix took the reins and had a great one on one conversation with Mark.

They chat about a little bit of everything from how Mark got into the camping and hammocking world, his YouTube channel and videos, and also about a medical concern that Mark found out he had.

So sit back and get comfy while we listen to Pheonix and Spiguyvers chat.

Welcome back, everyone. On this episode of the podcast, Pheonix talks more on his weight loss journey and tells us all of the ways that it has helped him with his hammocking and hiking, and a few ways that it has made it a little more challenging for him.

He also goes over some recent events that are happening in the hammocking community, as well as mentioning some of the hangs that are coming up in the near future.

And lastly, I go over the confirmed vendors that we will be having at HangCon so far. It has only been 1 week since I have sent out the emails to our vendors and already have around 30 confirmed, but I know there are a lot more on the way.

So make sure to listen to the podcast every other week, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and also subscribe to our YouTube channel so that you can stay up to date on all of the happenings.

This weeks episode marks the start of second year of episodes on the podcast, so Pheonix and I thought it would be fun to look back on our first year of doing the podcast. We talk about some of the earlier episodes that we recorded, how the podcast was born, some of our learning experiences, and what we have planned for the future of the podcast.

This weeks episode is a special milestone for The Hammock Hangers Podcast, as it is the 52nd, weekly episode. That is one whole year of all of you awesome people putting up with the sound of mine and Pheonix's voices. We both want to thank all of you for sticking with us each week and helping us grow.

Our guests this week are Heather Beck and Richard Nance, 2 of the board members of the Palmetto State Hangers group. This is the South Carolina hammock group that puts on Fall Sprawl, The Holiday Hang, Frozen Butt Hang, Spring Swing, and the Swamp Butt Hang each year.

This week though we are going to introduce you to Richard Nance, which is the new President of the group, and we are also going to talk some about the 2023 Fall Sprawl hang coming up in October.

We hear about some of the classes and events that they will have goin on, along with hearing about some of the vendors that will be there set up for you talk to and buy gear from.

We can't leave out talking about the raffle either, where you have a chance to win some really awesome gear from those vendors and others that have sent in gear donations.

You will hear how all of the money that is raised from the raffle ticket sales don't go to the club, but goes to the state parks for a special event that they hold each year where they buy gear for families that have no idea what it's like being in the outdoors camping. So all of that money is going to a great cause.

If you would like to make a donation to help out that cause and help get a new family into nature, you can do that as well by sending money via PayPal (Friends & family) to palmettostatehangers21@gmail.com

The idea of sleeping in a hammock may seem unusual for some people, but it has been a long-standing tradition in many cultures around the world. Hammocks are known for their comfort and convenience, and they offer many health benefits as well. In this podcast episode, we will explore the many health benefits of sleeping in a hammock.

Hammocks have been used by people in Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and other regions for hundreds of years. They were originally designed to keep people off the ground and away from snakes, insects and other dangers that lurked there. Over time, people discovered that sleeping in a hammock can be very beneficial for one's health.

We have a very special guest this week. He has his own podcast which a lot of you may already listen to. He is also the creator of The Hiking Radio Network, which this podcast is a part of. I am talking about Steve Adams, or also known as Mighty Blue.

I have been trying for the past 3 years to convert Mighty Blue for a ground dweller to a tree dweller, and about a month ago, I succeeded.

You will hear on this episode about a trip he just took where he used a hammock that I let him borrow, and now he is buying that setup from me. He fills us in on the trip and how it went with him using the hammock the whole time.

The links to where you can find Mighty Blue and his podcast, Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail are below. make sure to check it out and subscribe to it.

This week Pheonix and myself dive into a little chat about hammock stands. We talk about why it's a good idea to have one, the different types of stands from the lightweight to the not so lightweight makes and models, and we also touch base on how a little common since and rational expectations should be used when choosing the right hammock stand to get.

We go over why some stands may seem to be a little pricier than others and why you shouldn't always want to go with the cheaper ones.

There is also a 15% discount code from YOBO Gear that is mentioned which is, hammockhangers15 that will get you 15% off either the Cricket Stand or the Freedom 2 Sides Stand.

Links to some of the stands are below, as well as the link to the Hammock Forums thread where you can find directions to DIY a Turtle Dog Stand if you want to take that on and save some money.

On this weeks episode it's just myself and Pheonix catching up some and talking about our mini vacations that we just got back from. Pheonix and his family went to Washington DC and then to the Shenandoah's, and I was up in Virginia too, but was hiking around the Catawba Mountain area to see what McAfee Knob and all looked like with good weather.

You will hear about how Pheonix was excited that he had the whole family in hammocks the whole time they were camping, and you will hear how I was excited and glad that I was in my hammock vs the hikers that got flooded out in their tents.

Our guest for this episode is Robert Biron, or also known as Salty Beard. Robert is a former photojournalist, art director, map illustrator, and lifelong cyclist. He is a content creator on YouTube that specializes in bikepacking and gravel cycling. He is the cycling uncle that everyone wishes that they had in their family, empowering and inspiring cyclists to adventure beyond their boundaries.

After a number of cycling and skiing injuries, sleeping on the ground became a painful process for him, so he found that hanging in a hammock was the solution to a much better time and sleep while out on his adventures.

We have 2 guests on the podcast this week, Weston Barnes and Maria Rising, the owners of Mr. Mocks Hammocks. Mr. Mocks is one of the donating partners of HangCon, so Pheonix and I have a great chat with them to learn a little more about them on a personal level. This weeks episode is just a little different and that is because it was recorded in the woods while out camping with Pheonix and our guest this week, Travis Schaak or also known as Cap'n Carry On..

Travis is a good friend of mine and AJ's, and he is also the one that makes all of the great food that is served at HangCon each year.

Pheonix and I have a great chat with Travis and find out how he got his trail name, how he got into hammock camping, and about all of the hard work he puts in at HangCon.

This week, Pheonix and I talk about common mistakes that new hammockers usually make. We discuss the top 11 things that we see that people that are just getting into hammocks make. Most of them we made ourselves when we first got into hammocks, as well as many others did too. We hope that if you are just learning about hammocks and are wanting to get more proficient with them, that you can hopefully learn from the mistakes that we made, without making them yourself.

This week, since it's the Friday before HangCon, I wanted to try and get the HangCon crew together to chat some. I was successful in doing so, minus 2. Cap'n Carry On and Lil Ricky were not able to make it, so I'll have to have them as solo guests on a future episode. On this episode though, we hear from Jane Gillette, or Daddy, and Britt Holdren, also known as Big Bear about how they got into hammock camping and then how they became part of the HangCon crew. AJ Glenn, or Pheonix is back on with us as well and goes over some of the recent guest stats for this years event.

I have Pheonix on again this week to talk about some gear topics. he has three different categories that he will be talking about which include, gear he will always buy, gear that he will always make, and gear that he regrets buying. And he explains his reason for each of his answers.
Before we get into the gear topics though, I have AJ explain why he spells his trail name the way he does and not the correct way. It is quiet comical hearing him explain it.

If you have any specific questions that you would like to have answered on the podcast, please send me an email to skunkape@thehammockhangerspodcast.com or reach out to me on messenger.

Our guest this week is Derek Tillotson. Derek is the founder and CEO of Haven Tents. An adventure hammock company based in Utah.
From their launch on Kickstarter in 2019, they have continued to grow and move closer to their goal of making sleep the highlight of camping. Now in their third year of business, Haven Tents are available in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
Derek loves to adventure and finds many opportunities to "test" his tent in the field. He is a father of three and lives right at the foot of the Wasatch mountains in Sandy, Utah.

This week I have brought AJ Glenn or Pheonix back on to discuss a topic that he holds dear to his heart and is also very familiar with. There really isn’t a lot of good information out there on this topic either. The topic I am referring to is hammock camping for larger people. AJ tells us about a post that he saw in a forum group where a guy had asked a question and a lot of the answers he got back were not correct or even good information.

This week we have a very special guest join us. Most of you probably already know of him, and the ones that don't, should. He is a former Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey's circus clown. He has been a camper and backpacker his whole life. And in 2007 he started making YouTube videos to help explain camping hammocks to folks that were struggling a bit with all of the components and skills to achieve a good hang. He now has over 600 videos and 109,000 subscribers to his channel. So lets get ahead and get on with the show, because WHOOOO BUDDY, it's going to be a good one.

This week we have Dan McNeill from MCN Hammocks join us on the podcast. Dan has been camping and spending most of his time in the woods since the 70's. In 1987 he joined the army and got to travel around the world. Over that span he experienced the evolution of he gear that is used outdoors. He has done tent camping, tarp camping, bushcraft and has had lots of survival training and experiences. With the eagerness to learn new things, coupled with injuries making it hard to sleep on the ground, he dove into hammock camping in 2017. Shortly after that he began makin his own gear and also getting request from others for him to make theirs as well. So in April of 2019, MCN Hammocks was born.

Our guest this week is Jan Walker, or also known as "Fluffy". Jan got into hammocking when she started planning a solo, self supported run/walk across the US to raise awareness, and donations for the 9/11 National Memorial Trail Alliance. On March 1 of 2016, Jan set out on the nearly 3,000 mile walk across the United States, from Oceanside California to Ocean City, Maryland. She discovered hammocks when she started her planning for the walk. She wanted something light, versatile, and easy to set up for her journey, so she ended up getting the Clark Mark 2 hammock. She said It ended up being the perfect setup for her trip.
