Today I Am Alive: Recent Episodes

Margaret Aberdeen

Today I AM Alive is a series of podcasts, to inspire others who have been through similar traumas to switch off the victim role and rise like the Phoenix to grow beyond to live a fulfilling and fruitful life. For example: Why Selfishness Isn’t Selfish? How To Find Your True Love Soulmate? Why Your Past Matters? How to Heal for Real Within?  Why Aging is a BONUS, PLUS, and a MUST!?

ABOUT THE HOST

My name is Margaret V Aberdeen, host of “TODAY I AM ALIVE!” A lot people know me for being a unique, enthusiastic, vibrant, invincible, infectious, passionate woman that brings "LIGHT" to people’s lives.

I AM an Infinite Spiritual Being, and my present roles are a Domestic Abuse, Cancer and Near-Death Experience Thriving Survivor, Award Inspirational Speaker, Author of Priceless Roles of a Mother, Poet, Coach and Nature Lover, and I have experienced some dark life-threatening traumas in this world…

Including child abuse and almost being killed by a former partner which instigated the tragic loss of my second son, plus kidney, and brain cancerous tumours, and years of constant seizures, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression, and have recently been diagnosed with a hole in my heart, not to mention the struggles of being a single mother whilst dealing with the above.

Strange as it sounds, I see all these traumas as blessings for myself to share and inspire others.

Traumas because they were tough and hard-hitting… there's no doubt about that…

But blessings because Today I AM ALIVE, what I have experienced in life have become my greatest teacher, my pillar of strength for my personal and spiritual growth, and has shown me as you age you gain infinite wisdom and that life is short and precious with multiple choice, and that YOU are in control of how to respond to whatever life throws at YOU!

I’m Proof That You Can Survive Everything. From a breakdown to a breakthrough with a positive mindset, fiercely and fearlessly embracing all my traumas like the Phoenix, I have risen and am striving and thriving triumphantly with courage, choices, and commitment to change to live life within with passion and fiery vigor.

Margaret talks about why it is okay to be vulnerable when it comes to our emotions, and how nature's very own vulnerability might hold the key to being more resilient through its own vulnerability.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When stress, fear and worry begin to creep in to you life, relax and let your mind sort through them in its own way. Be an observer.
  • Even nature knows that the best way to weather a storm is to allow yourself to be bent and shaped by the wind itself - to go with the flow.
  • Cultural norms dictate that vulnerability is something negative and to be avoided for fear of being criticised. But this is not the way to true growth.
  • Vulnerability is the core of all emotions, and we must face what it means to be truly vulnerable - shame, fear and struggle for worthiness - if we want to be fully human.

BEST MOMENTS

'The trees love me for who I am'

'I learned to surrender to emotions'

'Vulnerability is a core factor for weathering storms'

'I decided to listen to my inner tutor'

ABOUT THE HOST

A few years ago, Margaret underwent several life-threatening traumas, including domestic abuse, and almost killed by her ex-partner, kidney and brain cancer, mental health issues, and a near-death experience. Her life was encapsulated in darkness, and she welcomed the thought of dying. From a breakdown to a breakthrough, these words from Viktor Frankl’s book, Man's Search For Meaning, changed her life forever: “The existence of life is to suffer; to survive is to find meaning in suffering.” Once she became aware of this, her life changed, and choose to live each day like it's her last…

This week, Margaret is joined by yoga teacher, healer, mother, and guardian of love, Ann Love, whose mission is to empower the world through teaching them to embrace the art of self-love.

But the journey has not always been a simple one for Ann, having two years ago been diagnosed with breast cancer. In this episode, Ann shares the story of how she overcame one of life's most difficult hurdles through the power of nature and the vibrations of love.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Challenges such as cancer can always be re-framed as examples of our strength. Overcoming these things shows us what we are capable of.
  • Cancer patients are instantly categorised as victims and sufferers of fear. But everything in life is a choice, including factors such as this. We can choose to be a victim, or we can choose the path of healing and empowerment.
  • Intuition is a super power in itself. We have been conditioned not to obey the common sense that steers us through life. This needs to change.
  • There is nothing wrong with prioritising ourselves over others, especially when we are in a place of healing. Stop feeling guilty and look after yourself wholeheartedly.

BEST MOMENTS

'Cancer makes you a superhero'

'Everything is a choice'

'We've lost our common sense'

'I decided to take responsibility for my own life'

  • To truly heal yourself you need to have trust and faith in yourself and listen to yourself.
  • Sound healing helps bring up the stagnation of emotions, allowing yourself to heal from within.
  • We carry the pain of the generations that went before us.
  • Healing is a process, and we have to take responsibility for it as individuals and do the work.

BEST MOMENTS

‘We haven’t been taught how to sit with the divine feminine because we live in a masculine world’

Margaret is joined by intersectional gender specialist, Dr Gurpreet Kaur, to discuss her incredible journey as an endometriosis survivor, what the condition is and how it manifests within sufferers, and how we can best help those suffering with this condition.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Endometriosis is when the lining of the uterus grows externally to the uterus itself, implanting itself upon other organs in your pelvic area.
  • Sufferers of this condition endure an accumulation of blood, which cannot exit, and it can manifest itself as extreme pain and inflammation.
  • Endometriosis is far more common than we may believe, with over 190 million women suffering globally, amounting to one in ten women on the planet.
  • Because this is a hormonal condition, sufferers see a lot of weight fluctuation. This makes holding a stable weight almost impossible. It also brings on chronic fatigue, meaning that enthusiasm and daily tasks are made more difficult.

BEST MOMENTS

'It is a reproductive issue that is very common'

'There was massive pain every month, to the point where I could not function'

'it's such an under-studied and under-researched condition'

We seem to live in a fix-it world. Margaret discusses why sometimes uncertainty or discomfort is exactly where we need to be. Why we should live an emotional existence, should give in to the voice of our heart for life's journey, how the lessons of nature itself can be applied to our own journey of change, and why embracing both negative and positive emotions can be the richest source of growth to help us learn far more about ourselves than we may have realised.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Life is made up of challenges that test our emotions. We are told that some of these emotional responses are bad and should be shunned. It's natural to want to avoid these emotions, but when we shun negatives, we also inevitably shun positives.
  • Only by embracing all emotions can we become fully-formed, high-functioning human beings. It's okay to feel sad, scared or anger. They teach us about ourselves.
  • Every difficult life situation can either result in fruitlessness and folly, or provide personal and spiritual growth. The result is up to us.
  • You always have three basic choices in how you respond to situations - to fight and tough it out, flee and not deal with it, or freeze and become numb.

BEST MOMENTS

'There's no comfortable way to say this - sometimes life sucks'

'It's important to know that both types of emotions are necessary'

'What you resist, persists'

'Our feelings can either set us free or freak us out'

This week, Margaret's special guest is Suku Moyo Mackenzie whose at-times horrifying story began with her gang rape at the tender age of twelve years old, an event which scarred her psychologically due to her anxiety about opening up with her story. After bottling it down deep inside, Suku suffered the ill after effects of PTSD, but now she has bravely chosen to share her tale, and by doing so, set herself firmly upon the road towards healing.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sometimes those we trust the most can betray us in the most personal way. In this case, family members bonded together to commit a terrifying, horrific act upon an innocent child.
  • In order to speak our truth, we have to find a level of bravery that we may not be aware that we possess. Victims are often derided for not saying anything, but it takes time to build the courage required.
  • The most sickening part of a crime such as this, is that the perpetrators rarely show remorse, allowing their victim to suffer while they nonchalantly go on living.
  • The bravest of us are those who take the pains of the past and vow to use it as a force for good - to protect those who are in danger. This is how we heal.

BEST MOMENTS

'She has come out stronger and is the voice of the voiceless'

'You were always my protector, but now I need to be protected from you'

'In my heart I was saying :I wish you would ask me what happened"'

'I protect others in every way that I can'

ABOUT THE GUEST

Suku is a mother of 3, and a grandmother of 2. She is the founder of Let’s Talk About It and is a passionate Advocate of Abuse and Mental Health. The foundation was founded from the horrific trauma she experienced at the age of 12 when she was gang raped, and because she didn’t talk about it, the stress of the trauma turned into PTSD and attempted suicide.

That was the turning point where she decided to speak out and raise awareness, basically be the voice of the voiceless. Suku now works with youth and helps rescue abused children and adults, including finding a safe place for them to live. She also raises funds and supports the less privileged in communities. For her ongoing relentless courage in raising awareness of abuse and mental health issues, she has received many awards and has appeared on television and radio shows

Margaret is joined by energy healer and specialist, Sunita Kaur, to talk about the transformative, positive benefits we can bring to our lives through the gift that is energy healing, a practice that preaches the message of hope in life and love, and how all subconscious encouragement may be a message from those we have loved and lost in the past.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Theta is the ability to connect on a really high level through four strands - our core, our life, our thoughts and feelings.
  • Many feel a sense of disconnection or undeserving. Remember that you are truly important, unique and valuable to the world.
  • We may not believe the things that our family believe, but the belief systems we inherit from them live within our physical form.
  • When our ancestors communicate with us through time and space, it is with a need to protect and nurture us, and in so doing, ensure that their legacy can be carried on.

BEST MOMENTS

'I knew the things that I needed to work on'

'Please remember how important you are in this place, at this time, and how valuable that feeling is'

'Connection was what changed everything for me'

Brenda Dempsey, who is here to make a difference. Brenda Dempsey is a Best Selling Author, Master Coach, Speaker, CEO and founder of Book Brilliance Publishing.

Brenda joins Margaret this week for an inspiring episode in which she talks candidly about how she elevated herself from traumatic beginnings to become a business powerhouse and a woman in total control of her own destiny.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sometimes the pull of destiny is so strong that it can encourage us to defy the accepted way of thinking and stake our claim to a better world.
  • When we put good into the world, the results blossom out into other arenas, causing a ripple effect of positivity.
  • Love is a growing thing. The more we plant, the healthier and stronger it grows in the world. Love begins at home and should be nurtured.
  • Vulnerability can be imbued with power. Strength can be founded upon weakness. Human beings are marvellously contradictory, which makes them all unique.

BEST MOMENTS

'There was something in my soul that made me think "No, mum, you are wrong"'

'I wanted to tell my children every day that I loved them'

Today, Margaret is joined by opera singer and yoga practitioner, Birgit Beer, who is a proponent of the message that through the voice, and through the healing, empowering force of yoga, trauma can be overcome.

In this show, Birgit talks about her own experiences, and how she has harnessed the power of expression to bring positive light to herself and those around her.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • People these days are feeling a sense of pain, and are subconsciously searching for a way to heal. Sometimes the answer presents itself when we least expect it.
  • We all share some traits and senses of trauma. Through connecting with others we share the pain, but also share the healing effects.
  • We don't need to help the entire world, we just need to do what we can/ When we create positivity it is like planting seeds that grow and do the same for others. It has a rippling effect.
  • if every one of us can only see the perfection we all have inside, and recognise how unique we are, then we will truly feel the love we're meant to feel.

BEST MOMENTS

Margaret is joined by coach, counsellor and facilitator, Masana De Souza, to discuss her fascinating path through life and how she discovered her own sense of spirituality.

Masana and Margaret also talk about the ways in which spirituality, yoga and meditation practices, and deep understanding can help us to overcome the scars of trauma.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The finest and most effective way of discovering our own path in life and spirituality, is to be given the freedom to do so on our own. We are all unique beings and therefore our paths will be unique ones.
  • Each of us are blessed with a special gift in this world - that remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime thing that makes us special. Finding that one thing and sharing it with the world is our most special gift.
  • Each of us have experienced trauma, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Trauma is any damage caused to our personal essence, on a mental, physical, emotional or physical level.
  • Nature still has an abundance of lessons to teach to us. We have only scratched the surface of the gifts it can impart. We should remain open to the message of nature and listen when it tries to steer our society.

BEST MOMENTS

'It gave me the freedom to find myself, and discover. my own spiritual path'

With the passage of spring upon us, Margaret takes time to reflect upon the ever-changing nature of the world, why we should adapt to change alongside it, and how we can harness the power of trauma to kick-start us into an empowering spiritual awakening.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Spring is a time for new beginnings. We should use this passing of the seasons to ignite change in ourselves, thereby keeping a sense of balance and harmony with the world around us.
  • Post traumatic growth helps people to find a new sense of life and personal strength, and only appears in the wake of trauma.
  • There will always be some degree of suffering that we have to face in life. When it comes we should not see it as negative. We should look deep into it for the embedded opportunity for growth and transformation.
  • There are three core types of spiritual transformation that we experience as a result of intense turmoil and trauma
    • Temporary awakening experiences
    • Gradual but permanent awakening
    • Sudden and dramatic awakening

BEST MOMENTS

'My heart sang with the rhythm of nature's melody'

'We are part of nature and nature is part of us'

'Many people define this as post-traumatic growth'

Kevin Hill is a karate enthusiast and pastor, a rare, life-threatening disease that literally tore his body to pieces and completely derailed his life. Incredibly, Kevin died twice as frantic doctors raced to save his life, and Kevin credits his miraculous recovery to the power of his belief in God and the healing powers of prayer.

Kevin joins Margaret this week to talk about his traumatic experience, and to discuss his belief that through an outpouring of global good wishes and prayer, they literally brought him back from death in order to continue his work as an advocate of human kindness and love. After waking up to life through death, Kevin really is taking the advantage of living and is now writing a book titled, "The Resilient Miracle", soon to be published.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • People go through so much trauma in life, and stories like Kevin's give us hope and faith in each other. It is proof that despite the dark lows we feel sometimes; we are also adding good back into the world.
  • The important factor to consider when healing is that hope is a powerful motivator. Never tell yourself that you're down and out for good. Hold on to hope and it will see you through.
  • When our belief is so strong, it can move mountains. In Kevin's case, it saves his life. He knew that his time had not come, and his spirit fought on, even when his body could not.
  • When confusion subsides, peace takes hold. When peace arrives within us, fear is removed, and true healing can take place.

BEST MOMENTS

'Some people collect coins. I collect rare conditions'

'I believe in God. I believe God helped me'

'I knew that deep down in my soul it was not my time to die'

'Because so many people were praying for me, God took notice'

As a survivor of severe trauma, Margaret has pulled herself back from the brink of self-destruction, and in this highly personal, especially honest episode, she sends out a message of hope to those who may feel as though there is little left to live for - your life matters.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Thoughts of suicide emerge when we feel helplessly trapped and suffocated by the pains of life. It is testament to the agony of that pain, that escape feels like the only solution.
  • Never think that you are all alone, as help cannot truly arrive until we share our pain with others. Let those you love know how you feel.
  • Talking about suicide still carries a remarkable stigma in society, but the more we discuss it, the more people will feel as though they can discuss with others, and hopefully prevent any attempts.
  • We are surrounded by trauma in the world. Studies have discovered that many people have at least considered suicide at some point in their lives.

BEST MOMENTS

'I still shudder when I remember those horrendous thoughts that stand out in my mind'

'At that moment, I thought taking my own life was the only way to stop the tremor of the emotional, terrifying pain'

'Opening up to your loved ones can feel scary at first, but you may be surprised at how receptive they can be'

'Until we have seen someone's darkness, we don't really know who they are'

As we continue to celebrate International Women's Month, Margaret welcomes Choi Tang, a healing therapist who specialises in panic healing, panic psychotherapy, and reiki therapy.

The subject this week is the healing power of trauma transformation and how we can often find the lightest and most valuable human moments in the darkest depths.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There are always moments of hope and healing to be found, even when things seem at their darkest. For Choi, the process of seeing her family members healed gave her a sense of peace and acceptance.
  • Healers who have endowed the gifts of healing should be encouraged to pass them on to others. If we spread the joy of love and healing to others, we create a better world.
  • Everything is energy, and the distance does not matter when it comes to the healing process. We can transmit healing energies even by the power of thought.
  • Since COVID-19, people have felt a mass kind of awakening. People are seeing the world in a whole new way and looking for a more natural path to healing and well-being.

BEST MOMENTS

'I know in my heart that I was searching for some kind of therapy for myself'

'Everything is energy'

'I knew I had to learn this because I felt that I had the gift'

'We need to listen to our bodies'

This week, to mark Mother's Day, Margaret welcomes Angela Asante-Armar - also known as Sister Naa - the founder of Power To Our Mothers Foundation Afrika. She is also a UK employment lawyer and life coach helping to elevate and empower black mothers.

Sister Naa joins Margaret this week to spread a message of empowerment and positivity, focussing upon the roles of mothers in our society, and why we should always regard them as pioneers when it comes to shaping and transforming the world we live in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The path to helping the world to thrive is to install mothers and women into more elevated positions, so as to use their wise perspectives and their experience in nurturing to help the world itself to thrive.
  • When we experience trauma, it is there to teach us a lesson. It enables us to pay it forward, help others, and maybe prevent the pain for someone else.
  • The role of women is often determined by society instead of our impulses or personal wants and needs. Instead, we should see women as the great distributors of power and knowledge, who shape the lives and thoughts of their children thereby influencing the world.
  • The focus must be upon the mother. We are living at a time where there is a huge imbalance between masculine and feminine energy. Nurturing the feminine benefits everyone as it provides harmony and balance.

BEST MOMENTS

'Mothers are world transformers!'

'I thought "I'm grateful for these things, but there must be more to my life than this"'

'Working with other women - I am always very nourished in that space'

'if you educate a man, you educate an individual. If you educate a woman, you educate a nation'

Kamapala Chukwuka is a wife and mother of three. She is a certified confidence coach, a motivational speaker and founder of a digital agency. During the raising of her boys, Kamapala has been championing motherhood from a new perspective - one that aims to inspire the next generation by demonstrating the power of women - and how she has built her personal ethos upon three words: inspiration, creativity and love.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you see a missing piece in today's society, we should step up and fill that gap. For Kamapala, it was to make sure that children such as her boys were being represented in books aimed at their age group.
  • The love that emanates from a mother to her newborn is a bond that can never be broken. It is unconditional and lasts a lifetime. It comes directly from the heart and radiates throughout life.
  • It' important that we never give up on our personal dreams and ambitions. Being a mother does not mean that we have to forget who we are as a person.
  • The most important element of motherhood and parenthood in general, is to implant the seeds of kindness into the minds of our children. These seeds will grow alongside the children themselves, until they blossom.

BEST MOMENTS

'I said someone needs to be writing these books!'

'My spirit nagged me until I became a part of the solution'

'Don't put your dreams on the back burner'

'Gifts are not to hold for yourself. They are there to share'

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, Today I Am Alive is dedicating the entirety of the month to some truly inspiring and incredible female voices, beginning with this week's guest, writer, and podcaster Najar Nyakio from Kenya, who joins Margaret to share her empowering tale of how she personally overcame trauma and learned to find the core of who she is.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Trauma can come in so many shapes and sizes. For Najar, it came in the form of never knowing who she truly was, and growing up in the shadow of a type of person she did not recognise.
  • We should always embrace the attitude that we are put onto this earth to empower and inspire. Never be afraid to let the wisdom and blessings of each day flow through us and out of us.
  • Trauma, in a way, can act as a blessing in disguise. It might be painful in the moment, but it can lead to enlightenment and inspiration for others.
  • Our menstrual cycle determines that each month we have to face up to debilitating pain. Our minds, mental state, our physical being, is geared towards pain or the anticipation of it. But we cannot let this define us, and there is a way to defy this excruciating, testing element of life.

BEST MOMENTS

'I am enjoying the fact that today I am alive'

'It was about stepping into a space where I had knowledge'

'I was placed on this magnificent earth to be the core of who I am to fulfil my purpose'

'The womb is at the very core of our beings'

In this episode, Margaret discusses why every day should be a celebration of love and respect, and why nurturing love itself should be a practice we constantly embrace.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Life is best lived when we spend each day in a state of gratitude. Be thankful for what the world provides, and you can be sure of happiness.
  • We should not restrict the act of love, or the praise of our mothers or fathers, to single days in the year. Every day is an opportunity to celebrate someone or something great.
  • Love is a skill that can be learned. Love is something that we must nurture and crave. If we treat it as a pursuit and endeavour to improve it as a skill, then life will become richer as a result.

Love is in the air, and Valentine's season is upon us. With love as the main focus of the moment, Margaret welcomes special guest - artist, author and poet, Cezanne Poetess, the founder of Journey of A Sister, a specialist in helping people to understand the "Self Love Deficit".

Cezanne and Margaret come together to talk about the value of self love, and why this Valentine's, it's always worth cherishing the most special person in your life - yourself!
KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If we do not love ourselves, then how are we supposed to understand how we can love other people?
  • We think of love as something external - something that is given to us by another. But love is what we are from within, and that is where the true journey begins.
  • Love should come from the overflow of what remains when we love ourselves. Learn to love from within, to love the person you are. If you manifest this love enough, then there will be plenty left for others.
  • Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate love in its purest form, and no one deserves it more than YOU! Make sure you celebrate yourself.

BEST MOMENTS

'We explore the true meaning of the world love, through poetry, music, dance, drama and comedy'

'People sometimes have so many ways of defining love'

'True love is what you are'

'People are becoming aware that self love is the greatest love of all'

This week, Margaret reflects upon the gift of aging, and the opportunities that come from reflecting on the very act of having lived a life - even when some days and months have been blighted by trauma.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Aging is not a period for negativity and regret. It is an opportunity to view the life we have lived so far in a constructive way.
  • Growing old is unavoidable, but rather than see it as a time to slow down, we should view it as the culmination of every moment since birth.
  • Rather than frame trauma as a hurdle, we should see it as a lesson - a way of making ourselves stronger - rocket fuel that pushes us higher and faster.

BEST MOMENTS

'Life gets more exciting as you age'

'It's an opportunity to look at this stage of my life as a rebirth'

'What more can I ask for than this beautiful gift?'

...create the life you want. There's a chill in the air, and so this week, Margaret takes the opportunity to talk about why we all need to be brave from time to time, even when nature itself seems to be warning us away, and how fear and doubt can lead to negative outcomes if we don't keep them tamed and controlled.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Every day is a new opportunity to create something fresh and shape the lives we truly want. Each day is a gift, so use it wisely.
  • Traumas can leave the lasting stains of fear and doubt upon our psyche, affecting one or more areas of our lives.
  • When we step out of our comfort zones, or face a challenging situation, our egos take the spotlight by controlling the mind and committing self-sabotage.
  • The ego can be jealous, possessive and protective - believing that what it is feeling is the right thing for you in order to keep you safe. The mind is like a garden and we can pluck out negative thoughts that no longer serve us.

BEST MOMENTS

'I was elated with an abundance of gratitude for being alive in the presence of a new day'

'Your inner self is the inner voice of your conscious'

'Our ego is constantly blaring in the background'

'Our biggest battle of the mind is fear and doubt'

Margaret reflects on what it means to truly present in the moment, of taking time to pause and consider where we've been, where we are now, and where we are heading, and how life can be dramatically enriched by finding the joy in everything we do.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Thoughts and feelings drift through us and around us like water in a stream or clouds in a sky. We should delight in them as we delight in the passing of nature.
  • Everyone hopes they will avoid the worst that life has to offer, but unfortunately these experiences happen, causing great suffering. But at the same time trauma can also be a powerful force for awakening.
  • Transformation happens to people for a higher purpose. This is evident in the experiences of the great leaders of the world most of which have overcome and conquered traumas and adverse challenge.
  • Darkness can cause suffering, but also joy. We can take any situation and find the wonder in it, even if it simply the recognition of our resilience and strength.

BEST MOMENTS

'I observe the stream of water flowing'

'What is it then that brings meaning to life?'

'Dealing with trauma is a long process - truly a death leading to a rebirth'

'Trauma sent them on a path that they never would have found otherwise'

As we move into a new season of Today I Am Alive, and a new year, it's time to take a look at the habitual goals that might be holding us back from feeling better, achieving more, and making the most of the bright future that lies ahead!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The year ahead is one that will be filled with innovation, discovery, and opportunity. We should embrace it as a new slate and look forward to writing our own empowering stories.
  • Now is the time for reflection. Look at the things we have achieved and how far we have come. It can help us to realise how much can be done in a single year.
  • The more we perform a task, the more it becomes an autopilot way of thinking. These can build until they become a hindrance to our achieving the goals we want.
  • If you keep on thinking what you are thinking, you will keep on thinking what you are thinking. If you are doing what you are doing, you will get what you are doing.

BEST MOMENTS

'As the light of the new year cascades around us, it's the chance to start fresh and reinvent ourselves'

'Pause, think, and write down what you have accomplished'

'You can still embrace 2023 with a spirit of passion, persistence and mindfulness'

It's that special time of year when people are preparing for the festive period, filled with expectations of spending time with happy loving family and friends. But there are many people who are alone, do not have happy loving families and friends to celebrate with and may feel a sense of isolation or loneliness.

In this special episode, Margaret discusses the value in finding a happy path through the festive period when you're spending it alone.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Expectations around the festive period are a source of great anxiety for some. For many, the prospect of being forced to spend time with family member who have hurt us and continue to do so, can be a generator of fear and negativity.
  • There are benefits in spending time alone, and it can provide a more suitable, happy environment when we need one.
  • Use this time alone to reflect and refocus upon what is important to you. It'll give you good grounding for the new year ahead and help you to make 2023 a time for prosperity.
  • Time spent alone and in the act of self-nourishment and replenishment, helps you to manifest a deeper understanding of yourself, and a greater realisation about the things you think and feel about what is happening in your life.

BEST MOMENTS

'We are told that the cornerstone of our happiness is in socialising'

'There are benefits in spending time alone'

'Reflect, refocus, realign and react'

After a minor setback this week, nature provided a solution for Margaret in the form of poetry. Join Margaret this week, as she reads to you a selection of poetry written specifically as she travelled through her own journey of healing from trauma.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The way that we think creates the shape of who we are. To become the creator of our own lives, we need to embrace our energy and thoughts.
  • Poetry as an artform can act as a form of catharsis, and can help us attune ourselves to feelings that may not appear upon the surface of our thoughts.
  • We often see trauma as a bad thing, but they can be reframed into positive experiences if we view them as lessons and opportunities for growth.

BEST MOMENTS

Happiness is a key part of life but is a changeable emotion. Join Margaret as she explains how our relationship with the pursuit of happiness impacts our life and the happiness we desire is different for us all. Discover what drives the true seed of happiness for you and how you can start to feel happy again.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We all want to know how to be happy and at present, many of us are questioning the purpose of seeking happiness. In this fast-paced world where we have all been through several traumatic situations, you start to feel like you can never be happy.
  • Happiness is pursued as a key part of life. Many people think of things that make them happy and make it their life's mission to try and get them.
  • What is the true seed of happiness? Is it healthy and beautiful? Is it designer brands? Is it meeting your soulmate or celebrating Christmas with your family? Happiness means different things to different people.
  • While happiness has many different definitions, it is generally described as a positive emotion, a state of being, a feeling of pleasure or contentment, but not to be confused with bliss or other more intense feelings.
  • People relentlessly pursue happiness as an unrealistic goal because it isn't constant. Happiness isn't a long-lasting permanent feature or personality trait, but more of a fleeting feeling and changeable state.

BEST MOMENTS

“The struggle to find happiness is a daily one for many people, and being rich or poor doesn't really matter.”

“I have spent many years searching for happiness, and it's been quite a bumpy journey.”

“In this era of my life, I'm a healthy, peaceful and happy spirit. I am not wealthy, but I've had a measure of achievement and happiness.”

“I wonder if maybe I was pressuring myself to forgive others or maybe I wasn't ready to forgive.” In this episode of Today, I Am Alive! Discover the truth behind forgiveness, why you must forgive yourself before anyone else and how holding on to past trauma will only affect your happiness in the present.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How could you forgive others for their misgivings when you hadn't forgiven yourself? The majority of us have made some terrible mistakes. Some mistakes may have cost us our marriage, our jobs, a close relationship, or even the loss of a loved one's life.
  • Forgiving others can be challenging, it seems much easier to forgive others than it is to forgive yourself.
  • The constant pain of your past can be crippling and it's hard to come to terms with something that you didn't do intentionally and doesn't line up with your values or beliefs.
  • Dwelling on the past can only affect your happiness in the present. If you choose to carry trauma forward it will harm your future and you must remember that you can't change what happened in the past.
  • There is one simple truth about us human beings. We think that we are perfect. Each of us is a multilayered, imperfect being with a mixed bag of character flaws and vulnerability and at some point, we all make mistakes.

BEST MOMENTS

“Some mistakes we have made have been so horrific. It may feel like it will take a couple of years before we can look at ourselves in the mirror again.”

“There are so many damaging expectations in our culture, society, education, religion, and social media, and we ourselves put on ourselves to be perfect human beings in this physical world.”

Welcome to Why Forgive part 2: The keys to freeing yourself. Join Margaret as she explores why people often find it hard to forgive and why society is comfortable clinging to the past and to trauma. Discover how to embrace, let go and change your live, learn how to become more loving and compassionate and understand how to forgive in this episode of Today I Am Alive!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why do people find it hard to forgive? Forgiveness is difficult because human consciousness has a hard time living in the present. If we keep anger and resentment in our hearts, then we have no space. No space for living in the now.

  • Even though the hurt has been done to us, what remains is simply a thought, a feeling, a persistent memory, replaying the scene over and over again, stored in our subconscious mind. Resentment and anger are locked in our hearts.

  • It feels more comfortable clinging to trauma, bitterness and resentment than doing the thing that scares us so much. Letting go and embracing the change that enters our lives.

  • Even if forgiveness may not be acknowledged or accepted, it is crucial to our own healing and personal and spiritual. Allowing us to take a more loving and compassionate stance towards ourselves.

BEST MOMENTS

“A few years on my healing journey of forgiving. I had a deeper awakening about forgiveness while attending a three-day spiritual seminar in Oxford.”

“Nursing those thoughts or grievances lingers in our mind. “

“The root of trauma is deep. Many of us often cling to bitterness and resentment.”

“Forgiveness allows us to take our power back, to let go of the negative energy that weighs us down and keeps us mentally stuck.”

“We think we are imprisoning those who have heard us by not forgiving them, wrong. What happened has happened. We cannot change that. Now is the time to forgive.”

“The most important thing I have learned is the word ‘forgiven’. Forgiveness changed my life forever.” Join Margaret as she explores how forgiveness is a gift received from the healing of past trauma, how to learn to forgive and why you have to dig deep into the root core of your pain in order to forgive.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you face life threatening traumas, all the baggage laden thoughts that usually burden your mind will eventually slip away like leaves falling from trees into autumn.
  • Forgiveness can get lost in multiple life challenging storms and layers of conflicting beliefs, habits and external influences.
  • We are in an era surrounded by violence, anger, and bitterness that we scarcely notice. It is so common in our lives and in our society and media that we accept it as normal as a kind of background noise.
  • We ourselves put so much pressure on forgiveness and how it is an act of strength and deliverance. Yet it seems that our society justifies the way the world is today and the expense of peace, love, and forgiveness.
  • Forcing ourselves to forgive or pretending to forgive when we really have can actually prevent us from healing and moving on with our life.
  • Forgiveness is the seed of personal and spiritual growth and self-worth. It comes from the heart, and it's a healing process in which you make a conscious decision to let go, whether the person deserves it or not.
  • To generally forgive and release our suffering, we have to dig deep into the root core of our pain and confront what triggered the feeling of anger and resentment.

BEST MOMENTS“The ability to forgive is a gift received from the healing of trauma.”
“The common misconception about forgiveness is that most of us think it's a feeling.”
“Forgiveness is a doing. Not a feeling, but it's a hard thing to do.”

November is a time of reflection and gratitude and in this episode of Today I Am Alive! Margaret explains how, even in our darkest and most challenging moments, the sun will rise again. Learn how to be grateful for your past trauma, discover how to overcome limiting beliefs, and understand that we can turn dark into light.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Be grateful for the dark times because it is during those times that you will grow. No matter how hard it is, the sun will always rise again. Despite today’s crisis of poverty, war, political disaster, human trafficking and domestic abuse rising, climate change, scoring heat and drought, and people suffering and in pain. The sun will rise again.
  • It can be hard to find things you are grateful for or even have the awareness to notice the good in our lives when we are burdened with so many challenges and a feeling.
  • Everything happens for a reason. Dark times have been thrown into our past to test our strengths and weaknesses and to show us who we are on whom we choose to be.
  • Dark times are actually here to bring out something amazing and magnificent. Dark times enable us to grow throughout our lives, change for the better, and overcome limiting beliefs to bring about deeper and more meaningful beliefs.
  • We are here to turn darkness into light and become real core creators. To build a divine world with exquisite presence and mindfulness and all of nature's natural beauty.

BEST MOMENTS

“I felt a deep connection with an abundance of gratitude for the fresh start of a new day.”

“Nobody would choose hard times over good. But most people will say that it's the dark times that have crafted who they are and has given them a newfound appreciation of life.

“Some people may fear dark times in an angry, anxious, and stressful way. While others like myself embrace them because they give us the time to soulfully, meditate and connect with ourselves, The Creator, and nature.”

Margaret is joined by alcohol survivor Dana Sealy in today’s episode of Today I Am Alive! Dana shares her personal story of overcoming her demons, her battle with alcohol and how she has learned to beat alcoholism and learn to like and love herself.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Drinking often feels like it can offer you stability and confidence, but in truth, it is used to mask and hide your true feelings. Alcoholism can hide pain because there are always smiles and laughter but it is all a temporary mask put on to make you feel better and an excuse to shy away from your real thoughts and feelings.
  • Alcoholics are people pleasers and will do anything to please someone else, even if it was of harm or difficult to them.
  • It’s very important to realise where you have been, the pain you have experienced and where you are today. Whatever problem you’re dealing with you’re not alone and often alcohol takes you to a place where you’re alone, a place of misery, but with some courage, you can overcome it.

BEST MOMENTS

“The journey began when I’d had enough, I'd had enough of drinking.”

“My alcoholism started from curiosity as a child.”

“I was unhappy at home. I was unhappy in my own mind and so I connected with others like that and for all the wrong reasons.”

“What affects the mind, affects the body, they’re intertwined and connected.”

“I myself have thought of suicide when I was going through my trauma, but it's because I just wanted that pain to stop, not to physically take my life.”

We are never really present in our lives because we are lost in mental chatter. Join Margaret as she discusses how to self-heal for real but overcoming past trauma, connecting with nature and being present in our lives rather than living in the past.
KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Trees and human beings are close-knit. They play a vital role in our lives and have been with us throughout our whole life. It's impossible to think about our life and our existence without trees.
  • There's a massive increase in the number of people with traumatic mental health issues and depression. A growing body of research is showing that spending time around trees and nature actually boosts our mental health and reduces depression and anxiety.
  • When unresolved wounds and traumas are still manifesting in your mind, your immune system will hit rock bottom. And then a lot of health issues arise such as, anxiety and depression, panic, high blood pressure, and cancer.
  • Mental chatter is an endless stream of past memories and future expectations, bringing doubts, self-criticism, and worry. It is caught up in life with an unconscious, conditional repetition dialogue that the mind churns out.
  • We are never really present in our lives because we are lost in the mental chatter of our unconscious thoughts with limiting beliefs that prevent inner healing from our traumas.

BEST MOMENTS“I see myself as a tree growing through stages of life, storms bearing fruits of infinite awareness to share with others.”
“One of the main reasons for mental health issues is that people are feeling increasingly isolated and lonely.”
“We are becoming a disconnected mechanical world.”

Why is love our greatest pleasure and deepest pain? In this episode of Today I Am Alive! Margaret dives into the five types of love and why re-programming your mind and harnessing the magical power of self-love will lead to greater happiness and well-being.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There are five types of love. Number one, sexual love, is based on desires and attractions only. Number two is family love between the mother, father, brothers and sisters. Number three is friendship, kingship and what some might call bloody love.

  • Love type number four is spiritual love, what we might call unconditional love for everyone and love type number five is arguably the most important, it is self-love.

  • It's time to harness the power of self-love within and the magic of its existence. Our outside programming conditions have us believe self-love is vain, selfish, self-centred, egotistical and an excess of self-interest.

  • There is a clear underlying message, we are conditioned to love, but we haven't been conditioned to love ourselves. Self-love is not selfish, it’s selfless with self-care and self-interest.

BEST MOMENTS

“Programmed beliefs are reinforced by our family, society, religion, education and our culture.”

“We are also conditioned to feel guilty if we don't stick to those patterns of behaviour.”

“Reprogramming your mind begins with self-love.”

“Growing up, I was one of many who thought there was only one kind of love. There was a concept that has been deeply entwined within us to love others.”

“I have learned that the myths and illusions about love aren’t true. The fabrication that was told to us at a young age, that’s programmed in our mind is a lie.”

People admire and respect you more when you are who you truly are. Join Margaret as she explores how to find yourself, how to overcome past trauma, and why being your authentic self will give yet you the respect of other.

In this episode of Today, I Am Alive! Margaret shares with you the importance of finding your true authentic self.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Nature fulfils by providing human beings with the needs to survive and drive food, soil, water, medicine, and materials for shelter.
  • It can often feel impossible to separate who we are from what we do. We live in ignorance of ourselves and our needs, and we get so caught up in our daily activities that we forget the essential things needed to discover who we are and what our role is.
  • You spend so much time focusing on your relationship with others that you often neglect the most important person of all, YOU.
  • Many of us are strangers to ourselves and have been programmed to believe that we need to be a certain way to be accepted.
  • People admire and respect you more when you move the mass on your face and be who you truly are. Honest, authentic and organically real.
  • People often have a great awakening when trauma strikes and their previous sense of self or identity is swept away.

BEST MOMENTS

“I’m sure there have been times when you have stopped and asked yourself these questions. Who am I? What is my role in this world? Simple questions, but honestly, quite difficult to answer.”

“We are so preoccupied with judging ourselves and others, trying to be the super perfect image that society envisions for us.”

“No one teaches you the values of who you are.”

In this episode of Today, I Am Alive! Margaret shares with you the importance of focusing on yourself. Discover why you shouldn’t lose your self-worth and value by focusing on others, how to treat yourself as the most important person in your life and why self-awareness and meditation are the keys to a happier and healthier life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Outside attractions and influences, especially today's social media, such as the internet, texting and notifications promote distraction and constantly beg for our focus and attention.
  • When you focus too much externally and on others, you tend to lose your value and self-worth, which will create a lot of life turbulence.
  • Often people spend far too much time focusing on their relationships with others, that they neglect the most important person of all, you. You are the most important person in your life.
  • The key to focusing less on others and more on yourself is self-awareness. The best way to achieve that is with solitude, meditation, mindful walking and by keeping a journal.

BEST MOMENTS

“For most people focusing on yourself is vain or arrogant but it’s nonsense.”

“Focusing on others needs to be balanced with yourself, just as you instructed to put your oxygen mask on before putting it on your child.”

We are the creator, the ruler, the master, and the leader of our thoughts and yet most of us are victims of our thoughts. Join Margaret as she dives into the awareness of becoming conscious of our thoughts and improving our health and wellbeing.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Our thoughts are like clouds in the sky, drifting in our minds. Thoughts come and go but If you allow yourself, you will react to them.
  • Become the observer of your thoughts. Simply allowing our thoughts to flow like clouds in the sky can expand our awareness of the vastness and beauty of nature and in a world which will improve our health and wellbeing.
  • Everything you are aware of is, happening only in your mind, your subconscious mind, your thoughts appear only to you and are not being heard by anyone else whatsoever.
  • Our thoughts do not exist outside of our awareness. There is nowhere else where the thought that is appearing to you at this moment is actually occurring. You and you alone are responsible for your thoughts.

BEST MOMENTS

“The power of now is to be the watcher of our thoughts but without getting caught up in them.”

“Internet sites create a lot of physical and mental health issues.”

“We are the embodiment of everything that occurred in our life.” Join Margaret as she explains why your past matters, how you can learn from it and why it’s your past experiences and traumas that actually form the foundations of you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Rather than forgetting your past, you can choose to learn and grow from it. Your past matters because it’s the foundation for a new and exciting journey and it brought you to where you are today.

  • No matter how beautiful or traumatic our past is, it has helped us form who we are today. Your past is a collection of memories and the only way for you to truly be in the present is by drawing on your memories. They form our consciousness and make us who we are.

  • Our past doesn't define us but shapes us into the people we were always meant to be. If you ignore or suppress your past you cannot heal or grow.

  • You need to face limiting beliefs and traumatic memories head-on and find the root cause of the pain so that you can create a healthy and meaningful life.

BEST MOMENTS

“You need to forget your past and move on with your life. You need to learn and grow from it.”

“We are the embodiment of everything that occurred in our life.”

Discover how to change your situation, control your response and choose love, compassion and forgiveness over pain.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Our thoughts and feelings are shaped by our conditioning, our beliefs, our knowledge, our experiences, and our present state of mind. We each have the inner awareness of freedom, the power and choice of how to respond to any given thought, emotion or any given situation that arises in our life.

  • If you're not able to change a situation, you can control how you choose to respond to it in the present.

  • The challenges we face and the obstacles we overcome do not have to hold us back. Instead, they become part of our story of redemption. Gifts, blessings and healings to live a purposefully filled life and to empower others.

  • When suffering is overcome, it is replaced with valuable gifts of love, compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude.

  • We are the producer, the author, the director, and the actor of our thoughts and feelings. We can make new choices from suffering or whatever life throws in our way with meditation, creativity and imagination.

BEST MOMENTS

“My mind began to shift. It was an instant awakening in the present moment and I have the choice, I am in charge and can change my thoughts and feelings.”
