To Know Him and to Make Him Known | Water Walkers Will Make Him Known Matthew 14:22-33 (NLT)
A Stand Alone Message | Mick Veach | lead pastor | first aired on 09.26.2021
Introduction
Read Scripture
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”
28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
—Matthew 14:22-33
1 ) Let’s look at Peter for a moment
Not polished—Raw passion
Talks too quickly—Doesn’t think thru
Bold—Strong personality
One moment victorious, the next messes up
Probably not the one anyone would choose
2 ) Peter was always in the middle of it:
“Don’t tell people you are going to die”
“You are the Christ”
“Jesus let’s stay up here and build a shelter”
“If they all run, I’ll die for you”
“Not just my fee, wash all of me”
3 ) Peter was a water walker but was not PERFECT, his passion to be with Jesus pushed him to areas he would otherwise never go
4 ) Overview of the Text
Only Peter walked on the water
Question—What if they had all gotten out of the boat?
Jesus would have welcomed them
They would have had the greatest dance on the water as group
Problem The disciples saw the waves
Peter saw Jesus
The boat calls your name You were not created for the boat
Comfort
No Sacrifice
The majority of believers live in the boat (church, family)
Water Walkers make Jesus known because their lives are passion about Him You were created to be a water walker A desire for Jesus above all else—Focused
Desire to please Him above else—Gal.1—not after pleasing people
Have the same heart as Jesus—the NATIONS—Mathew 24:14
We must begin to live in the supernatural—signs and wonders— “Expect great things from God, attempt great things from God”
Water Walkers have Three Essential Actions
I. Engage Jesus Continuously
A. Verses 28 — Peter shouts out Lord have me come to you Lord
It is more about being with Jesus than the miracle B. Biblical Verses that call us to engage
James 4:8
Jeremiah 29:13
Hosea 6:6
C. Pete was always engaging Jesus
Healing-Deliverances
Transfiguration
Miracles
Teachings
D. This all led to his ultimate experience becoming the one and only water walker with Jesus
Without engagement to Jesus, you will never become a water walker E. Peter was transformed in that moment, water walkers make Jesus known and have distinct characteristics
Water walkers love until it hurts—I John 3:17-18
a. Once you engage Jesus, you will engage people and truly love them b. It becomes messy and demands from you c. Personal example—My protective layers because of Tahir and Tyrone d. Mel loves people that no one wants to love
Water walkers pray prayers that make you sweat—Mathew 7:7-8
Water walkers see sacrifice as a privilege—Phil 1:21
a. Pick up your cross and follow me
b. Radical obedience
F. We must decide if we truly love Jesus and once that occurs we must engage him regardless of what that looks like
Key Point — Water walkers engage Jesus continuously
II. Listen Carefully for Jesus’ Voice
A. Verse 29 — Jesus said, yes come… and Peter heard him
There were so many distractions screaming at Peter at that moment:
a. Disciples b. Waves, wind and rain c. Death d. Boat
Yet Peter move through the distractions and heard Jesus’ voice
Do you hear Jesus? Biblical Texts that demand that we listen
a. James 1 — Be quick to listen b. Psalm 46:10 — Be still and Know …
Jesus is speaking but are you listening?
He speaks through
a. Scripture b. Events c. Worship d. People e. Prayer f. Holy Spirit is the leader of all this
B. We make excuses when He speaks
Moses said he stuttered Isaiah said he had unclean lips Jeremiah said he was too young C. We miss so much simply because we are not listening
We live so far below what He wants for us Spiritual Paupers D. We must make time to listen
E. Personal examples of my listening and how it has enabled me to make him Known
Go to Azerbaijan Mosaic KCC F. He is speaking to you today are you listening
KCC let’s get out of the boat Let’s engage our neighbors and community Let’s invite people to church Let’s serve on various teams from KCC a. International fellowship b. Woodfield c. Friendship House d. Hand2Hand e. Streams of Hope
Key Point—Water walkers LISTEN and hear Jesus call to them
III. Risk without Fear for Jesus A. Verse 29 — So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water
You can’t walk on water until you get out of the boat. You can plan it or talk it to death, you must do it Peter was willing to do what no one had ever done before B. Question — what enabled Peter to do the impossible?
His eyes were fixed on Jesus Peter was willing to die He did lose his focus and sink but he was the only one to experience the miraculous C. Biblical examples of those who were willing to risk
Numbers 13 — Joshua and Caleb Gideon with the 300 D. Remember it is not until you willing to die for something until you can truly live for it
E. Peter knew Jesus as Lord so risk is possible not just Rabbi
F. Water walkers will dream and risk while others stay in the boat
KCC, we need to begin to risk and trust Jesus Never stay comfortable, walk on water G. We must risk in such a way that with us it is impossible but with Him it is possible
I can’t—He can H. Matthew 6 — Jesus said don’t worry about your life …
I. Peter was the rock that the church was built because he was willing to risk …
Key Point—The world is waiting for a man or woman to live radically secure in Jesus and thus risk it all for Him
Call to Action:
Decide to get out of the boat
Listen—Jesus wants you to make him known, do it
Don’t play it — risk it all for Jesus, abundant life begins now
When the Church becomes a Bridge Acts 10:1-20 & Acts 10:21-48 (NIV)

Read Scripture
10 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. 2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. 3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.
The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.
19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” —Acts 10:1-20
21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”
22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.
The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along. 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”
27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. 28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”
30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”
34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. —Acts 10:21-48

Introduction
Read Scripture
3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”
“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.
4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”
“No,” they replied.
6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.
7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.
10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.
12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.
15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”
“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”
“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.
17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. —John 21:3-17 1) The million - dollar question is; do you love Jesus?
Do you know how to love Jesus? 2) Luke 10:27 — We are commanded to love the Lord with all our heart and with all our soul, with all our strength and with all our mind and to love our neighbor as we love our self.
3) Our mission statement at KCC is to Know Him and to Make Him Known
a. Today, we look at knowing Him b. You can’t know Him or desire to Know Jesus with out loving him
4) Today we hear statements like
a. Love is Love b. Love wins c. Love is never wrong
5) We must define what love is and how that applies to Jesus
6) Question — Can you have a wrong form of love?
a. Selfish love b. Abusive love
7) Biblical Description of love
a. Phileo—love of friends b. Eros—Erotic, passionate love c. Storge—love of family d. Agape—Unconditional love

a. Hurt in our past or present b. Disappointment with God, church and people c. Unmet expectations d. Do not understand what a relationship with Jesus is e. Jesus is not #1 priority f. Do not know how to love Jesus g. Do not accept Jesus’ teachings
9) Let’s learn from Peter and how he loved Jesus
Learning how to love Jesus and thus Knowing Him
I. Loving Jesus is our Foundation
A. Verses 7-8 — The one Jesus loved…jumped into the water and headed for the shore B. Peter was so in love with Jesus that it caused him to do things that others would not do.
i. The intimacy that he had missed was now possible and he was not going to miss him ii. It is interesting that this time, he swims and does not walk on the water
Peter is in a different moment C. Phil 3 — Paul had everything that he would have ever dreamed and then he experienced the love of Jesus and everything changed
Paul counted all the good things in his life as rubbish compared to knowing and loving Jesus D. Question—What had occurred in these men’s lives that so changed them?
i. The supernatural moment of experiencing his love changed everything ii. I John 4:19 — We love because he first loved us
E. This love is for you today regardless of what you are experiencing
F. Personal Example of how I experienced his love for the first time and it has been growing ever since
G. Romans 2:11 — God does not show favoritism
i. He desires to grant this foundational love for each of us ii. God does not have favorites like in families

Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O Israel! This is what the Lord says:
“Do not act like the other nations, who try to read their future in the stars.
Do not be afraid of their predictions, even though other nations are terrified by them.
Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.
They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over.
Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field!
They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you nor do you any good.”
Lord, there is no one like you! For you are great, and your name is full of power.
Who would not fear you, O King of nations? That title belongs to you alone!
Among all the wise people of the earth and in all the kingdoms of the world, there is no one like you.
People who worship idols are stupid and foolish. The things they worship are made of wood!
They bring beaten sheets of silver from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz,
and they give these materials to skillful craftsmen who make their idols.
Then they dress these gods in royal blue and purple robes made by expert tailors.
But the Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King!
The whole earth trembles at his anger. The nations cannot stand up to his wrath. —Jeremiah 10:1-10 1 ) What is an idol?
a ) We often say to someone who we admire, “you are my idol…”

4 ) Jeremiah is the prophet that makes the declaration about idolatry
a ) Idols are worthless
b ) Idols turn your heart away from God
5 ) Israel is taken over by Babylon as God’s judgment
6 ) Biblical Examples
a ) Romans 6:16 — you will become a slave to whatever you choose to obey
b ) Romans 1 — you are guilty because you have chosen to worship creation rather than the Creator
7 ) Idolatry is destroying the church today
a ) We put something on an equal level as God or even more important than God
b ) It is fueled by PRIDE
8 ) Jeremiah 9:20 — We need to learn to lament and repent if we are going to survive today’s challenges

A Stand Alone Message | Tricia Chapman | executive pastor | first aired on 08.29.2021
Read Scripture
I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. —I Corinthians 1:4-10
1 ) Paul is addressing the church in Corinth. His message in the first chapter is one of unity and humility. Paul reminds them that true power and salvation can only come in the message of Jesus Christ.
2 ) Verses 4-10 - Paul is grateful for the church in Corinth and he commends the host of gifts that God has given the Christ-followers in Corinth. He encourages them to stay strong, use their gifts for kingdom impact. Paul reassures them that God will provide for their needs and that God is faithful. Paul also reminds the Church of Corinth to be unified together.
I. Serving one another
1 Peter4:10 - God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. In order to lead in anything, you have to serve in something. Key Point: The only thing that will go into eternity is what you do for the Kingdom of God.
Be somebody that does something for someone that points them to Jesus.
II. Encouraging one another
Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we encourage, it softens a person’s heart for God. Key Point: It’s impossible for us to influence when we are not in the conversation.
Be somebody that does something for someone that points them to Jesus.
III. Producing with one another
John 15:1-5. I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me,and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. God calls us to remain so that we can produce fruit… even when it gets tough. Key Point: The world needs the light that shines within you, along with the gifts God gave you.
Be somebody that does something for someone that points them to Jesus.
IV. Guiding one another
John 16:1 – All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. Can we run a race for God so someone else can experience God? Key Point: Run a race for God that points people to Jesus.
Be somebody that does something for someone that points them to Jesus.

“I can do it myself!” seems to be an applauded approach to life. Such thinking is flawed. God didn’t create us to go it alone. We need each other … not just for the sake of surviving, but for the sake of thriving and experiencing the fullness of life God desires for us. As scary and messy as relationships can be, we are called out of isolation into community where we can both know others and be known. Our spiritual journey in life is meant to be a “We Not Me” experience!

Many people are skeptical that the Church really practices what it preaches. When we hear stories from those who lived during the time of the Bible, they show that Jesus, God's Son, actually lived up to the truths behind His last words on the cross. Caring for family members when it’s hard, finding hope in suffering, graciously receiving the help of others, loving your enemies. Real life scenarios both then and now. Experience a community that wrestles with these truths together and loves each other through the tough stuff of life which these truths address. Jesus’ words as he died on the cross have potential to be words of life for all.
