What makes Alzheimer’s disease so uniquely devastating compared to other illnesses?

Dr. Paul Schultz describes Alzheimer's as a neurodegenerative condition that not only deteriorates the mind slowly but also significantly impacts the lives of loved ones who endure watching their family members fade away, brain cell by brain cell. Unlike cancer, which, though lethal, involves an aware patient, Alzheimer's strips sufferers of their awareness and connections. It's a disease that Dr. Schultz believes can have its risk reduced by at least 50% through lifestyle changes.

Key Takeaways

Here are five key themes discussed in the transcript, along with the main conceptual takeaway for each theme:

  1. Understanding Alzheimer's Disease:

    • Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease, characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive abilities. The main takeaway is that Alzheimer's accounts for 60 to 80% of dementia cases, and it's essential to differentiate it from other forms of dementia that could result from reversible causes like strokes or vitamin deficiencies.
    • Impact of Lifestyle Changes:

    • Lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. The takeaway is that by controlling factors like blood pressure and adopting healthier habits, the risk of developing Alzheimer's can be decreased by at least 50%.

    • Role of Inflammation and Chemotherapy:

    • Inflammation is a significant factor in the progression of Alzheimer's, and surprisingly, chemotherapy may have a protective effect. The main takeaway is that chemotherapy reduces cell proliferation, which might lower inflammation and subsequently the risk of Alzheimer's.

    • Genetic and Familial Risk:

    • There is a genetic component to Alzheimer's, though not all cases are hereditary. The takeaway is that a significant portion of Alzheimer's can run in families, and genetic testing in certain cases might help assess risk, especially if there is a history in the family.

    • Recent Advances in Treatment:

    • Recent developments have led to the availability of medications that can significantly slow the progression of Alzheimer's. The takeaway is that these medications work by reducing amyloid plaques in the brain, offering hope for better management of the disease in symptomatic patients.

What should you know about transitioning to Medicare?

In this episode, Freddy Cruz speaks with Peter Remington from Remington Insurance Brokers about the complexities of Medicare. Peter outlines the shift from employer-sponsored health insurance to Medicare at age 65, discussing the many components involved, including premiums, deductibles, and various plans. He highlights common pitfalls like forgetting to sign up for Part B, which can lead to lifelong penalties.

Medicare’s benefits, such as the freedom to choose doctors and lower deductibles, are emphasized. Preventative care, including the Silver Sneakers program and routine checkups, receives special attention. Peter stresses the importance of selecting a plan that fits individual needs, rather than relying on celebrity endorsements or recommendations from friends. He also underscores the role of continuous self-care and financial planning for a stable future.

Key Takeaways

  1. Understanding Medicare Basics

Takeaway: Peter emphasizes the complexity and breadth of information related to Medicare that people encounter when they become eligible at 65. He highlights the transition from employer-provided insurance to Medicare and the common confusion people have about parts and plans, like Part B and penalties for late enrollment.

  1. Differences from Employment-based Insurance

Takeaway: Peter explains that Medicare is fundamentally different from typical employer-provided insurance. Medicare allows for greater freedom in choosing doctors and often has lower co-pays and deductibles. Understanding these differences can make Medicare a beneficial transition for seniors.

  1. Role of Medicare Brokers

Takeaway: As a Medicare broker, Peter finds satisfaction in guiding clients through the complexities of Medicare. Brokers can compare multiple plans to find the best fit for individual needs, unlike representatives who might only offer a single company’s products.

Takeaway: Peter highlights Medicare's focus on preventative care, such as through Silver Sneakers, which encourages fitness and wellness as a way to prevent larger health issues. Medicare supports activities and regular check-ups to maintain good health and avoid costly interventions.

  1. Navigating Medicare Enrollment and Resources

Takeaway: Peter discusses the practical steps and resources available for new enrollees getting started with Medicare, including online tools and consultation services. Hi.

On January 14th, Cruz through HTX will return as a newly reimagined podcast.

While it's season two, this will be the first themed season. Whereas last year was all about talking to all of the area's leading voices, those making the Greater Houston area great, this season will have a singular focus.

This season will focus on health and wellness.

You may or may not know this, but I operate a podcast production company. Speke Podcasting produces top ranked shows spanning different industries. Most of them are within the health and wellness space. So it only made sense to kick off my first themed season with episodes spotlighting clients, colleagues and new friends in that space.

The new season features new cover art and a video component.

Subscribe now and set a reminder to listen to our two-episode premiere of the season of health on Cruz through HTX!

"The best damn fruitcake in Texas" is a hell of a subject line.

It intrigued me so much, I replied to my PR pal Paula and asked if Pastry Chef Ruben Ortega would be up for hosting me in his kitchen to bake a cake.
I expected a no.I got a yes.

What happened after that blew my mind and changed the way I look at one of the world's most disliked desserts.

Effective today, Cruz through HTX will go dark for a period not to exceed three months.

The intent of the show has and always will be to share the stories of the businesses, organizations, and individuals that make the Greater Houston area GREAT.

But it's time to take a pause.

We've had a nice, long run of well over a hundred shows. I did it to prove to myself it can be done and to prove to myself that the town that made me, still cares. It does.

But in order to continue the value proposition of the show, I've decided to release shows on a seasonal basis. Here's what I'm thinking: 20-25 episodes over two to three months.

So, while I won't be releasing new episodes for a while, I'll be back with a batch of conversations that will entertain, inform, and possibly enlighten you.

'Till next time...

Why would anyone want to go on a 10,000 mile motorcycle ride?

For Mike Hazelrigs, there are plenty of reasons.

Mike discusses his experience, from working at Astroworld to embarking on the Hokahay Motorcycle Challenge, a 10,000-mile motorcycle ride starting in Florida and ending in Homer, Alaska. He shares his favorite memory from Astroworld, riding the Texas Cyclone, and explains the nickname "Squatch" given to him by friends. Mike elaborates on the rigorous preparations required for the ride, including his choice to purchase a new motorcycle and the importance of conditioning both body and mind for the journey.

The ride supports various charities, with Mike raising funds for The Rose, a breast cancer organization close to his heart. His personal connection to the cause comes from his fiancée’s battle with breast cancer. Mike aims to raise awareness and funds, driven by the motto: “If I can't save her, try to save others.”

Help Mike keep smashing his fundraising goal for The Rose HERE.

3.) Being a caregiver is an emotionally taxing role that requires immense mental strength and self-care. Caregivers must find ways to refill their emotional and physical energy to remain effective, underscoring the importance of self-care amid the challenges.

4.) Undertaking significant challenges can be driven by deeply personal motivations and the desire to make a difference. In Mike's case, raising funds for the Rose and supporting his fiancée highlights how personal connections and altruism can fuel perseverance in difficult endeavors.

What drives a seasoned warrior to transform into a humanitarian hero?

Dennis Price's journey from Marine Corps special operations to founding Heroes for Humanity is a tale of transformation and purpose. After 17 years in the military and private sector, culminating in 13 deployments, Price found himself on the brink of becoming another veteran suicide statistic. However, a life-changing experience redirected his path.

Answering an urgent call to action, Price led a mission to rescue Americans stranded in Afghanistan. Within two weeks, he and his team saved 55 lives. This success led to a partnership with Save Our Allies, resulting in the rescue of 77 more individuals. This pivotal moment shifted Price's focus from taking lives to saving them, giving birth to Heroes for Humanity.

Today, Heroes for Humanity operates in six countries, driven by three core pillars: personnel rescues, humanitarian and medical aid, and evangelizing. The organization mobilizes volunteers and special ops-trained individuals to carry out its mission. In a recent operation, the team successfully evacuated 300 at-risk individuals from a conflict zone, demonstrating the immediate impact of their work.

Relying solely on donations and partnerships, Heroes for Humanity continues to make a difference globally. For those inspired by Price's story and the organization's mission, more information is available on their Instagram page.

This season, I've adopted A Place for Peanut as the official nonprofit of Freddy's Huge ASK Podcast.

Megan Cardet is the co-founder and CEO and she joins me to talk about APFP's mission to save horses from going to slaughter.

We go deep in this conversation and it takes a dark turn, as she details much of what happens in the slaughter pipeline. So if you're sensitive to animal cruelty, then this may not be the episode for you.

BUT...

You can still help.

The bill Megan references in this episode is the Save America's Forgotten Equine's Act of 2021, also known as the SAFE Act of 2021. As of now, it has yet to be passed.

Learn more about this lifesaving bill HERE.

And to learn more about A Place for Peanut, go HERE.

And now for something DIFFERENT...

You may or may not know, but I own a startup media company, Freddy Cruz Creative Works.

While its official birthday is July 1st, 2022, I feel as though I made my official debut at the Small Business Expo on November 15th. And maaaaaaaan, was it FUN.

I met so many different people from all walks of life. Entrepreneurs who started their own business over the summer (just like me!), and biz owners who've been at it for years.

This Small Business Saturday, I'm paying homage to the backbone of the U.S. economy by spotlighting four individuals who've placed the ultimate bet. On themselves.

The people in this episode were recorded during the expo, hence the raucous background noise.

You'll hear from a pet taxi owner, a boxer who creates custom jewelry, a lady who makes custom stickers, and a solopreneur whose company is inspired by her mom.

Tyler Jones and I go back. Not decades back, but back to the first ever podcast I hosted during a previous career.

During an interview, I heard my favorite author Chuck Palahniuk (the mastermind behind Fight Club) recommend Tyler's book Criterium. To this day, it remains one of my favorite horror stories.

This came at a time when I was about to launch a podcast about books. So after following Tyler and getting a follow back, I slid him a DM and asked if he'd be interested in being a guest. He said yes but unbeknownst to me, I was the first person to ever interview him.

Since then, he's released a ton of work, including but not limited to, Enter Softly and Almost Ruth.

We had a great time catching up and you'll enjoy getting inside the mind of a horror writer.

Her memoir is perhaps one of the most important books you and I could ever read, because she tells the hard truth. The ugly truth. I hope this book does for the Jews who suffered under Hitler what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago did for Russians who suffered under Stalin.

The Devil’s Dictionary is a cyberpunk thriller by Steven Kotler, who happens to be one of the world’s foremost experts on peak performance. And yes, you will need to inject this story into your veins. In fact, one of my new favorite quotes comes from the book. It reads, "Lunacy is a fairy tale. The full moon doesn’t make us mad.”

You'll love this book, as well as Steven's most recent nonfiction book The Art of Impossible. He's a true polymath who has his hands in so many different projects, including Planet Home and The Forest + Fire Collective. You can learn more about Steven's work HERE.

It's no coincidence that I'm ending the first season of the podcast with a guest like Steven Kotler. I'll be channeling a lot of what I've learned from him into the my first official month as a business owner. Which means I'll be going on hiatus for a couple of months, so that I can focus on launching my business and putting the final touches on my upcoming novel Allow Me to Ruin Your Christmas (on-sale November 8th). These are, as Steven would say, my MTPs (Massively Transformative Purposes).

My hope is that you've enjoyed listening to these guests as much as I've enjoyed speaking with them, and that you've learned something (or, a LOT of somethings) along the way. I'll be back in late September with an all new lineup of guests and look forward to sharing their stories and journeys with you.

You can keep up with me on the socials and on my website, which you'll find HERE.

We had a wonderful conversation about Teddy and the importance of teaching children how to care for animals. And each other.

The national conversation about race makes me squirm.

When seeing people go apoplectic on social media about who said what and who said what decades ago, I think to myself about how much better at these impossible conversations I'd be if given the chance to speak with racial justice activists.

Enter, Ilsa Govan and Tilman Smith, authors of What's Up With White Women?: Unpacking Sexism and White Privilege in Pursuit of Racial Justice. The title and cover alone are enough to turn some people away. As someone who doesn't believe in the notion of "white privilege" in 21st century America, I should know because when it arrived in the mail, I did my best to not answer the PR firm's request for an interview. Eventually, I accepted and here they are.

I don't give myself a pat on the back very often, but this is one of those times that I will because in my heart, I believe they got a fair conversation. And I thank them both for joining my podcast.

Did you know that more than 70% of Texas schools have at least one faucet or fountain? INSANE!

What's even more insane is that nobody seems to be talking about it.

Enter, Michael Lewis with Environment Texas. They've been working hard to sound the alarm about the devastating number of schools with lead in their water.

In this episode, we talk about how the lead got their, what the smallest amount of lead can do to a child's development, and what we parents can do about it.

Ruta Sepetys has proven once again why she is one of the world's best storytellers. Her new novel I Must Betray You is a historical thriller focused on the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

While it's only March, this one will go down as one of my favorites of the entire year. Ruta dug deep into the annals of history by not only sifting through thousands of pages of text, but by talking with individuals who played a vital role in the overthrow of the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime, including a man who was on the firing squad that executed the dictator.

Not only did we talk about her novel, but we also discussed her journey to becoming such an influential writer (she's spoken to Congress and NATO).
