Firefighter NetCast is not your father’s radio show! It's nine different programs, each hosted by firefighters. They're designed re-create the atmosphere of the kitchen table type discussions between firefighters that happens after a call, or around shift change. Tune in this week to the latest episode of The Front Seat on Firefighter Netcast. Last month we were excited to add Bill Carey of Backstep Firefighter and Firefighter Behavior as a co-host. This month Dave and Bill will dig into the meat and potatoes of the Fire Service’s mission and the resources available to fulfill them. Our program is intended to be a virtual firehouse kitchen table. We will be sitting at the table just talking. We do not know what we will be talking about, we do not know who will stop by to talk. There is a open invitation to 1.2 million firefighters and we are interested in what you have to say.

Exciting news for the next edition of “The Front Seat”, on this month’s show we introduce a new co-host for The Front Seat. Tune in on September 8th and listen as Backstep Firefighter’s own Bill Carey joins The Front Seat’s Dave LeBlanc. Bill Carey is the online public safety news and blog manager with GoForwardMedia.com, or more specifically FireRescueMagazine/FirefighterNation.com, JEMS.com, LawOfficer.com and FireEMSBlogs.com (just a few, or at least what I can mention right now). Dave and Bill will discuss a variety of topics on Thursday’s show. Certainly the most poignant topic will be the upcoming anniversary of September 11th, 2001. No single event has affected our Country more than the terrorist attacks and murders of that day. But for the Fire Service this event had even more impact because of the number of brothers lost, and the fact that Firefighters were now on the front line of the terrorist battle. Along with anniversary there the issue of the recent findings regarding working “the pile” and cancer will also be a topic of discussion. From there the two will move into discussion about the generational differences of firefighters, and how these differences are changing the Fire Service and whether those changes are for the good or not. Finally Bill and Dave will discuss where the show is headed and future topics. As always listeners calling in are a big part of the show and with this change The Front Seat hopes to become more like a combination of a Radio Talk show/Kitchen table conversation.

Dr. Clark has long since been a tireless advocate for 100% compliance for firefighters to wear seat belts. This week the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department received acknowledgement from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for achieving 100% compliance with the International Seat Belt Pledge. National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Fire Hero Radio host Dave Statter brings us live coverage of the start at the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Westin Peachtree hotel in downtown Atlanta. Scheduled as part of Fire International Rescue, this stair climb is just one of many held across the nation giving firefighters the opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifice of their fellow firefighters as they ascended the 110-story towers nearly a decade ago. Participants will climb 110 flights of stairs (the same number as the World Trade Center Towers). Each climber will dress in turnout gear, station gear or workout gear and will carry the photograph of a firefighter who was killed that day. This is not a timed event or a race, it’s a way for firefightes to honor and remember their comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11th.

On a very special Firefighter Netcast show, John Mitchell welcomes back Jeff Dill, a Battalion Chief of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness, IL. and retired Hinsdale (IL) Fire Chief Pat Kenny for an intensely personal discussion on firefighter suicides and mental health. B/C Dill is a nationally recognized authority on behavioral health issues within the fire service. He established Counseling Services for Fire Fighters, LLC based on the tragic events that surrounded Hurricane Katrina. When speaking with firefighters who returned after serving the community of New Orleans, Jeff heard the pleas of firefighters who had a difficult time talking with counselors who did not have any firefighting experience. They became frustrated and never did seek the help they needed. Joining Chief Dill will be a very special guest- retired Fire Chief Patrick Kenny of the Hinsdale (IL) Fire Department. Chief Kenny is the Assistant Executive Director of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and a representative at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Seminar on Depression and Suicide. Tragically, in 2006, Chief Kenny lost his son Sean to suicide. He reflects on the obstacles and challenges he faced as a father as well as a chief officer during his personal nightmare. Since then, Chief Kenny has travelled across the nation and around the world sharing his intensely personal story and promoting advocacy of mental health awareness in the fire service and beyond. Join Chief Billy Hayes as he welcomes nationally recognized Campus Fire Safety Authority Ed Comeau to his show, “Stop, Drop, and Roll With the Punches” on Wednesday night at 9pm ET. They’ll be discussing the overall state of affairs regarding fire safety on campuses...where the fire deaths are occurring and common factors in them. Find out what some schools are doing to reach out to students during Campus Fire Safety Month. Students with disabilities, previously an under-served demographic, now have a fighting chance due to new campus fire safety legislation. Ed Comeau is the publisher of Campus Firewatch, an electronic newsletter focusing on the complex issues of campus fire safety and a recognized authority in the field. He manages the development team for the cutting-edge campus fire safety training program www.igot2kno.org, and was the lead author on a study of fire safety for students with disability in higher education as well as a study on student views and attitudes towards fire safety, both prepared under Federal grants. Ed is the former chief fire investigator for the National Fire Protection Association and investigated incidents around the globe, including the English Channel Tunnel Fire, the Kobe Earthquake, the Dusseldorf Airport Terminal Fire, the Goethenburg Disco Fire and the Oklahoma City Bombing among others. Prior to joining NFPA, he was a fire protection engineer for the Phoenix Fire Department and was a fire fighter with the Amherst Fire Department while obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.

On Wednesday June 8th, “The Front Seat” on Firefighter Netcast will have Battalion Chief Mike Walker from the Oklahoma City Fire Department as a guest. Battalion Chief Mike Walker has served with the Oklahoma City Fire Department for 21-years. Prior to his promotion to Battalion Chief, Walker was a Station Officer at Oklahoma City’s Technical Rescue Station and Haz-Mat Station. He served as a Training Officer within the department for 3-years. Chief Walker is a Task Force Leader for Oklahoma Task Force-1.
Chief Walker will discuss training to an acceptable level of performance as well as some additional training methods and ideas he has been working with. “The Front Seat” will also review several Firefighter Near Miss Reports and try and identify some common themes among them and ways to try an avoid the mistakes made. The Near Miss Systems contains a tremendous amount of material and information, but it can be difficult sometimes to extract the salient points. Hopefully by discussing these reports in the Netcast format the “nuggets” contained within these reports can be more easily reviewed.

Her Dad was a fire lieutenant and her two youngest brothers (twins) joined as cadets, then volunteers and eventually became career firefighters.
But when Janet Wilmoth tried to join her local volunteer fire department, the fire chief told her to “Go home and have babies.”
She went on to do that too, but in the meantime, Janet Wilmoth took another approach to the fire service. She’s been with Fire Chief Magazine since 1986 and now leads the charge for improving the fire service as the publication’s editorial director.
I wonder if that chief has since been reminded of that famous quote: “Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel!”

Firefighter Netcast was born just over a year ago as an idea between the creators of Firefighter Netcast John Mitchell begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting and Rhett Fleitz. What the hell were we thinking? Our first shows were nervous times for us. Now, we just take our laptops to the local bars and drink heavily...then we get on the air to bring you some fire service topics!
Little did we know that we would be jet setting across the Nation (or half of it anyways), going to great cities, and meeting so many great people! Baltimore, Indianapolis, Baltimore again because we couldn't get enough, Chicago, and Emmitsburg...we had a blast at all of them.
Along with our show, we also produce 3 other shows. In the past year, we have hosted or produced over 80 podcasts. That isn't too bad is it?
We probably recorded several hundred hours of audio and only let the F bomb slip by once!

“It’s good to be strong and it’s good to be courageous. But it’s also good to ask for help. “If I had a good friend who said, ‘you need to get some help,’ I would listen. I would hope somebody would do that.” Fire Chief Bob Khan, Phoenix Fire Department, which lost four firefighters in seven months to suicide.
Whether we admit it or not, we are not immune to the effects of the unique stress we cope with each day as firefighters.
Many times, we keep these stressors bottled up inside us without seeking help. Other times, when we do seek help, we have a difficult time trying to relate to counselors who have zero experience as a firefighter, and become frustrated, eventually abandoning outside help often critical to our well-being.
Tonight, Firefighter Netcast introduces Jeff Dill, a Battalion Chief from suburban Chicago, who holds a Masters Degree in Counseling. Chief Dill has established CSSF, Counseling Services for Firefighters, which offers behavioral health support to firefighters; trains senior fire officers, and educates clinicians on the benefits of understanding the life and emotions- of firefighters.
The numbers of firefighter suicides are jaw-dropping. As often as a few times a week, Jeff finds himself answering calls for help from fire chiefs around the country.

The Obion County Court today (10/18/2010) voted 15 to 3 (21 members; 3 not present) in favor of implementing county wide subscriptions. Basically the county will collect the fees at the court house and distribute them to the 8 municipalities. There is definitely mixed emotions among the fire chiefs. Though this may be a step forward in getting needed funds into the hands of the departments; it is still far from the goal of having a fire tax or fire fee to provide 100% coverage for all county residents.
Commissioners also voted 17 to 1 in favor of an amendment that this issue of a fire tax/fee will be placed as a referendum on the ballot at the next general election in 2012.

September 25, 2010 marks the ninth year since the death of rookie firefighter Bradley Golden.
On September 25, 2001, Brad Golden had been on the Lairdsville Fire Department for three weeks; just enough time to die!
Brad was the victim of a training exercise that went terribly wrong. It was to be a joint, live-burn training exercise with Lowell, Westmoreland and Lairdsville fire departments. It was to be an evening exercise; one that he could have very easily chosen not to attend. He had committed to being there and he was a young man who kept his word and his commitments.
As it were on this day, Brad could have gone out with friends. But, according to his stepfather, Bob Roberts, Brad was “all pumped up about the practice”. Nothing was going to come between Brad and his dream of being a firefighter; a dream that he had held since his days in Clark Mills, where he would watch the firefighters there. The sirens, the flash of the big rigs going by and the looks on the faces of the firefighters as they went by were too powerful to resist. Brad was hooked at an early age.

In 2009, 93 on-duty firefighter fatalities were reported to U.S. Fire Administration. Hoping to reduce that number, Pennsylvania Fire Commissioner Edward Mann posed a safety challenge in September 2009 to fire industry manufacturers nationwide. Hale has answered Commissioner Mann’s call with the development of SafeBuy™, a complete suppression agent delivery system designed from the ground up to support firefighter safety. Hale launched SafeBuy at FDIC 2010.
“Hale has always stressed operational performance excellence in our products, which makes them fundamentally safe and reliable,” said Bruce Lear, Hale’s vice president of sales and marketing. “When we heard that Commissioner Mann saw an additional opportunity for manufacturers across the board to make safety a top priority, we realized that offering new premium safety features completely standard on a pump module would help firefighters avoid as many human errors as possible, providing the best protection for their lives.”
Commissioner Mann said that his call to manufacturers stemmed from a larger nationwide program from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation aimed at increasing safety awareness among firefighters. The campaign, known as “Courage to Be Safe,” introduced 16 safety initiatives for firefighters to follow in 2005. Since then, Commissioner Mann has overseen almost 150 “Courage to be Safe” sessions in Pennsylvania, with more than 9,800 attendees. Similar activities surrounding the program are taking place in other states.
Since initiating “Courage to Be Safe” education sessions in his home state, Commissioner Mann reports that the number of line of duty deaths in Pennsylvania has decreased from 18 to less than 10 per year. He hopes that by producing safer equipment, manufacturers can help to further reduce that number across the country.

Making Our Communities a Safer Place to Live and Work Working to make our communities a safer place to live and work, Moffitt has made public safety a top priority. Thanks to the efforts of Representative Moffitt, the 94th District (his former legislative district) was one of the first districts in the State of Illinois to equip every fire department with life-saving technology such as thermal imaging cameras. In addition, many area public safety officials were able to trade outdated equipment for the latest advanced live-saving equipment.
The American Red Cross recognized Moffitt for his commitment to the health and safety of his constituents after he obtained automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for area police departments. As co-chairman of the House Fire Protection Task Force, a bipartisan committee working to ensure that fire departments have the funding to purchase needed equipment and gear, Representative Moffitt helped to establish a No-interest Revolving Fire Truck Loan available to all Illinois Fire Prevention Districts. Hailed by several area fire departments for his efforts, he was named Honorary Firefighter by Clover Township, Honorary Chief of Altona Fire Protection District and Honorary Paramedic by Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service.
