To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? The majority of youth in America are not on board for the new extremist Republican agenda. They believe in reproductive rights, and that the climate is in crisis. They’re against book banning and propaganda education. They’re majority pro-LGBTQ, pro-union, pro-health care, pro-living wage and pro-common sense gun legislation, and the Republican party offer them none of that. GenZ might technically still be new to politics, with the oldest member of the generation turning 26 this year, but they know who they are and what they want. Our youth is also looking around at everything from our legislation to our politicians and not seeing themselves reflected, and that hurts with turnout and engagement. Which is why our guest today is so important. Maxwell Frost is not only the first member of GenZ to be elected to Congress, he’s been elected to represent Florida. So as he looks to, and represents the future of our government and country, he hails from a state that’s currently working overtime to take us to the past. Republicans spin a good yarn, but data doesn’t lie, and since globalization began the contrast between Republican and Democratic performance on the economy has been incredibly stark. Look no further than Bidenomics vs. Reaganomics. While the Democrats continue to evolve to attempt to create an economy that works for all of us, Republicans keep doubling down on policies that only serve the rich. There’s no reason Democrats should continue to lose the conversation around the economy when study after study shows that Democratic leadership equals growth, lower deficits, and the ability to adapt to a changing market, while Republican leadership equals recessions, higher deficits, and continued American decline.

We know the conservative movement wants to return us to “a better time”, what they see as the “natural order”, with the white, straight Christian man on top, but even those who see themselves as liberal or centrist can struggle with the idea of changing the status quo, because it feels like a potential losing proposition for people who have always been at the top. That people who would be outwardly opposed to MAGA still feel uncomfortable with all these calls for equality and respect, especially when it’s perceived to question their judgment, or status in society. Nostalgia is a powerful part of the human condition, and it can easily become the filter through which every political, social, and cultural piece of information is absorbed. So if a political movement offers to bring back what has supposedly been lost, or at least keep us at status quo, it’s hard to resist because it speaks directly to the anxieties people have around the social and cultural change America has been undergoing over the past century. Christian nationalists believe that America is defined by Christianity, and the government should be taking active steps to keep it that way. This is completely antithetical to how our nation was actually set up, but they now have their hands in so many pots - from education, to voting, to human rights - and are backed by such an large amount of dark money, with seemingly endless connections, that the bottom line is if we don’t wake up to the danger of this movement, which in many ways runs parallel with the white nationalist moment and, these days MAGA Republicans, then we’re going to wake up in the near future to realized we live in some version of a Christian autocratic theocracy where our laws, lifestyles, even our morality is dictated by a select few, and the only choices we’ll have left will be conform or suffer. And if that sounds like the opposite of the freedom and liberty America is supposed to stand for, it’s because it is.

Ron Klain joins us for the post-midterm wrap up. Though not all the results are in, we do know that Democrats will hold the Senate, no election deniers will be in charge of elections, that Democrats have gained governorships and made headway in state houses and the power of hate and division might be on the wain. However, it shakes out, the midterms were a good day for democracy. We might be in for a contentious 2 years, but then again, aren’t we used to that by now? The bottom line is people took this election as their opportunity to register their distaste for extremism, election denialism and political violence. They came out to vote for human rights and bodily autonomy and a properly functioning government. If the country is sick, these elections feels a bit like a fever break. Are we out of the woods? Not by a long shot, but we live to fight another day and should be damn proud of our efforts.

Today’s episode is the last in the series of Candidate Conversations leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates who might not be getting the attention they need but have a real chance of winning with the right amount of attention. Today’s we talk to two amazing Democratic candidates for Attorney General, Jen Jordan for Georgia and Rochelle Garza for Texas. The Attorney General is the state’s top prosecutor meant to represent the public interest at the state level. An AG has the power to hold politicians accountable, to promote justice and equality and to protect our democracy. This is not a job that should go to just anyone. It certainly isn’t a job that should go to criminals and party shills, which is exactly who these women are running against. The difference between Jen & Rochelle and their opponents is the difference between women with rights and women without rights, the difference between votes that count and votes that don’t count, and the difference between the law that looks out for the people, and the the law that protects the powerful. AG is a position you should know, and these are candidates you should know about. Electing these women would make such a tremendous difference to the state, but also to the rule of law across the nation. We just need to get them across the finish line.

When we last had Teri Kanefield on the show she was reminding us that just because we weren’t seeing the results we wanted didn’t mean the wheels of justice weren’t turning. People wanted so badly for the DOJ to tell us they were investigating Trump, for Trump to be arrested, for RESULTS, but Teri has always believed that the fact that we were seeing so little, was good news for the health of the rule of law. She’s always stressed how important it is to not rush the process or abandon the rules simply because we wanted to. That one party has made it very clear they’re ready to abandon democracy and the rule of law and Teri has been equally clear we shouldn’t help them do that by abandoning the rule of law ourselves. 5 months later, after the search of Mar-a-lago we can see she was right when so many others were wrong. Want to understand what’s going on right now? We talk to Bharat about about inflation, the economy and all the things the Biden Administration is doing under the radar while the Republicans blame them for all the country’s woes. I promise this is actually a very hopeful episode. American democracy is under attack in more ways than ever before. America is at a crossroad. There is a real possibility that we will cease to have democracy in the United States. As Rothkopf says, “Republicans don’t just want to repeat the “Big Lie”, they want to repeat the ability to do what Trump WANTED to do and disenfranchise the American people.” Holding Trump accountable is essential, but almost more important, is defeating anyone who would undermine the integrity of our elections for their own power. We have to recognize that the majority of the country doesn’t believe this “noxious right wing cocktail of lies” but it’s up to us to make sure those who do, aren’t the ones making the decisions. In his most recent book, “Battling the Big Lie: How Fox, Facebook and the MAGA Media are Destroying America”, Dan discusses how the right wing built a massive, billionaire funded disinformation machine that was powerful enough to bend reality to win in 2016, nearly steal the 2020 election, and left unchecked, this kind of weaponized disinformation might be powerful enough to take the 2022 midterms and hand the Republicans the 2024 Presidential election. We discuss what can be done and what WE can do, to make sure that doesn’t happen. Not on our watch. We are responsible to be the progressive megaphone and encourage others to do the same.

After a copy of Justice Alito‘s draft majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health leaked to Politico. In less than a year Governor Hochul has gone from Governor by default, after the abrupt resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo, to leading gubernatorial candidate for New York’s November’s election. Born and bred in upper New York State, Governor Hochul is lawyer, a mother and lifetime public servant, Governor Hochul is also a tireless advocate for women’s rights and women in leadership. She stepped up to the plate when opportunity called, and she’s a big proponent of more women feeling the confidence to do the same. Governor Hochul makes the argument that Democrats must, and can, protect our majority in government and that we need to reach out to anyone who believes in democracy and the American experiment to fight for values that are currently under attack. Governor Hochul really seems to be the real deal. A leader who believes in listening, collaboration and learning from others. She’s also not afraid to get scrappy if the moment calls for it. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is not some standalone crisis that started in late February, but rather a much bigger picture that’s coming together. A picture made up of hundreds of puzzle pieces that tell a story. A story of greed, power and ambition. A story of lawlessness and fraud. As story of weakness, and yes, a story of treason. We might never know everything that happened, but we can start by acknowledging what we do know as it comes into focus. Inflation is an obvious problem in America right now. The cause, however, is little less obvious. We have a supply chain problem due to the pandemic, but we also have companies recording record profits, and one whole political party who would rather weaponize inflation than solve it. I’m no financial expert but when this many people are talking about the same thing, it’s important for us to at least understand the broad strokes so we’re dialed in and asking the right questions. The right to vote in America is under attack. The Republicans, and the dark moneyed powers who fund them, have made a calculated decision to rig the elections in their favor to regain and retain power. The plot was premeditated, is ongoing, and includes active military personal, white house staff and prior executive branch members. It is a frustrating time. Most of us are losing our minds with the lack of accountability for Trump & Co. We’re mad at the Democrats for not moving faster and doing more. We’re mad at the DOJ for seemingly doing nothing. We’re mad that it feels like we’re the only ones calling for justice and we want results like, yesterday. But, as Teri Kanefield says, “It’s important we don’t fight autocracy with autocracy” because “if we fight like them, we will end up like them” and then our democracy will be well and truly gone. People need to channel their anxiety into productive action. At the end of the day, there is no magic bullet. The only way to save democracy is with more democracy. Enough of the spin, the depressing headlines & the bad poll numbers. By almost every discernible metric, the Democrats are actually doing incredibly well. We talk about the signed bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, the biggest investment in our country in over 50 years; the Build Back Better Act, that could be the greatest social spending bill in decades; and, we talk in depth about the party that voted AGAINST all of that because they’ve chosen Democratic failure over American success. We question who the Republican Party has become as they’re no longer attempting to govern, but setting up to rule, and based on which voices they’re abandoning and which they’re elevating, it appears the future under the GOP will look a lot more like Hungary than America. If we’re going to be ready to fight for our democracy, we must stop falling for the drama. See the parties through their actions and not the media’s words. The PoliticsGirl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become.
