We've set out to document those bars that have a seedy backstory and interesting history behind them. But we’re not just talking about these places in the quiet confines of some home studio somewhere. No, we’re actually visiting these places and recording live at the dive bar itself. In each episode we visit the places where bad decisions and future regrets are made...so you don’t have to. Featuring producer extraordinaire Bob Trombley from the Pike Place Podcast. Also featuring Brad, Lou, and Jeromy, the knuckleheads responsible for Three Friends In Search Of A Podcast.

And has it really been 50 years since a bunch of hippies bought a bar just so they'd have a place for the softball team to drink for free? Yup. In this very special episode, we join the Zoo crew to celebrate their 50th anniversary. But the history doesn't stop at [checks sliderule] 1974 because these dive bar vibes go all the way back to 1934 - even earlier if you wanna shop a convenience store. A cornerstone of the Capitol Hill neighborhood's blue-collar history, and one of Pike Street's most famous watering holes. So much history and criminal exploits to explore at the Comet Tavern, we can't cover it all in one episode. But don't even get Sweet Lou started on the parking situation. Is it a lounge or a tavern? Either way, North City Lounge & Grill in the heart of Shoreline is one great dive bar. Some patrons call it a tavern, some bartenders call it a lounge, and we call it the crown jewel of Shoreline's North City neighborhood. Built in 1927 - with pictures to prove it - this patina'd booze joint started out as a grocery store and now stands as Shoreline's oldest continuously operating business. We pretend to be locals and venture back to old stomping grounds for a visit to Sully's Snowgoose Tavern in Phinney Ridge. An eclectic mix of beer styles, Bavarian architectures, and old Seattle history, Sully's has all the charm of a classic dive bar with the added bonus of a fantastic tap list. Not one but two nitros, and not one but two genuine classic German beers on tap sets Sully's apart from the riffraff. If it wasn't confusing already, Sully's throws in Guiness draft and a huge Ireland football scarf behind the bar. Pie jousting fans won't want to miss this episode. Recorded at the Waterwheel Lounge in Ballard. We're hanging outside in the patio, where it's crazy smoky and hazy from scary Northwest wildfires. Not good, but at least we're at an awesome dive bar and washing down the smoky haze with some tasty beverages. Beyond the salacious history of Waterwheel, we get into the bizarre blue laws that popped up after prohibition (along with a shameless book plug). And a trash-talking Texan who picked a fight with Alaska. You can head down to the Waterwheel 365 days a year, even on St. Swithin's Day. Our Whatcha Drinkin' segment includes shade thrown at pumpkin beers, even though they're delicious, plus the delicate dance of weed and beer. And Sweet Lou drops some knowledge about the Up house. We kick off season 2 of Dim Lights & Stiff Drinks in one of Seattle's oldest bars, the Central Saloon in historic Pioneer Square. With drinking and debauchery roots going back to 1892, the Central lays claim to being Seattle's oldest saloon. But is it really? We get into the history, the booze, the tall tales, and especially the music. The Central also claims to be the birth place of Grunge music so of course we gotta unpack that. Recorded live in a dark corner of Streamline Tavern in lower Queen Anne. Unlike the typical dive bars we frequent, poor Streamline Tavern has been the victim of more crimes than they've perpetrated. Plenty of comical stories of thwarted stickups and cat burglar safe-cracking, with plenty of booze. If that wasn't enough, Streamline also got kicked out of their original home by international gentrification. Keepin' it real and live at The Shanty Tavern in historic Lake City. Bothell Way begets Victory Way begets Lake City Way, and the old Mac's Shanty honky-tonk roadhouse from 1934 begets the current Shanty Tavern. Cold beer, live music, and great times...but only on Fridays. Even better than a history rundown of this classic dive bar, current owner John Spaccarotelli and his daughter Dana join us and provide a rich chronicle of the tavern and the neighborhood - John's run the joint for over 60 years! Recorded live at Targy's Tavern in upper Queen Anne, where monocles and top-hats rule. The hills around here are so steep you'll need...horses. Targy's opened in 1934 which is the "golden year" of dive bars in Seattle. We barely get through the door before the staff threatens to beat us up. Okay not really but the history of Targy's pretty much defines dive bar lore with stories of rowdy barkeeps, illegal gambling, and i-drink-alone debauchery. Recorded live at Eastlake Zoo Tavern with absolutely no view of a lake so don't ask. And don't you dare call it billiards since this is a snooker table, bitch. Plus an Iron Maiden pinball machine thrown in for good measure and some epic graffiti. Mad bartender skills come shining though with the Whatcha Drinkin segment, complete with uppity 50/50 beer concoctions. The Where We At segment goes deep into the amazing decor, accoutrements on display, and dilapidated houseboats. Unfortunately we don't quite crack open "the chest." This classy establishment is home to not only the great Pike Brewery, but also it's founder Charles Finkel. Charles chats with us about beer, wine, the local microbrew scene, and international booze history. Recorded live at The Sloop Tavern in historic Ballard, a stone's throw from the Ballard Locks. But more importantly, a stone's throw from Lake Union and a couple more stones' throw from Lake Washington where the famous Sloop Tavern Yacht Club races, cruises, pirates, and meets at The Sloop afterwards for a few pints. For unknown reasons none of us order a Slooper-sized 34 oz. beer. But we do ramble on about "Whatcha drinkin?" and "Whatcha got?" This longtime UW watering hole let us in after-hours while setting up for a post-COVID-lockdown reopening. If you listen real close, you can hear the faint sound of customers being kicked out! Recorded live at The Cabin in Richmond Beach, Shoreline. Built in 1927 and opened as a bar in 1933, this historic tiny tavern served longshoremen and lumber mill workers for decades. Steadily sinking and settling over the years, The Cabin now has a quirky tilt that gives this local watering hole a whole lot of charm.
