Microsoft just released their latest Work Trend Index report (aka, a report that analyzes global trends in the work force) and it is bleak. There is no more beginning, middle, or end to the work day—it is unending and infinite. The line between productivity and burnout has been blurred, time for deep focus is rare, and we’re being interrupted every 2 minutes, on average. Not only is this unsustainable, it’s ineffective. We need a new way of working and a new way of thinking about work. It’s time to stop spinning in circles and start reclaiming our attention, our energy, and our humanity.

In this episode, we’re diving into a topic that comes up in almost every coaching session: how to deal with difficult people. From coworkers and family members to old friends and romantic partners, some folks just seem to have a knack for driving us up the wall. But instead of focusing on changing them (a losing battle, by the way), this episode offers a practical framework for taking ownership of your own emotions, understanding the hidden stories driving others’ behavior, and showing up with clear intentions—even when the impact doesn’t go as planned. We’re talking about how to process your feelings, communicate with more compassion and clarity, and detach when needed—so you can stay grounded, connected, and proud of how you show up, no matter who you’re dealing with.

The concept of what it means to be a leader is ambiguous—even the dictionary defines leadership as “the act of leading.” Not quite helpful. So, inspired by my own experiences, I created a framework I’m calling Danny Coleman’s 5 Levels of Leadership. Unlike that abstract or the one-size-fits-all definitions of leadership, these levels offer clarity, self-awareness, and a practical roadmap for growth—whether you're leading a team, a business, or just trying to lead yourself better. If you’ve ever wondered why some leaders build lasting greatness while others leave chaos in their wake, this episode is for you.

Coaching, management, and leadership has a few fatal flaws—there’s no agreed upon standard of excellence, but anyone can try to coach or lead, not to mention the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the human condition in the first place. If you want to stand above the crowd as a truly impactful leader, it’s a good idea to lean in to the things that make you… well, YOU. When you develop a unique coaching style, you’ll better be able to help those that are looking to you for guidance.

Today I have on one of the most special guests to grace the show—my mom, Suzanne Michaud. My mom is newly retired from corporate America, so I wanted to pick her brains on the lessons in work and leadership she picked up over the course of her career. We talk about what success looks like to her now now vs. the beginning of her life, having grace for yourself throughout life’s ups and downs, and the fact that it’s never too late to find your passion.

I work with a lot of people in corporate America and I’m beginning to notice a pattern, one where many people are feeling a lack of agency, both at work and in their personal lives. These people feel like what they do is inconsequential and feel stuck—they’re disempowered and disengaged. There’s this idea that leadership and positive change has to come from the “top” but it isn’t true. Any of us can lead, any of us can make a difference from any position or place of power. Whether you realize it or not, your beliefs and actions affect the people around you, so it’s up to you whether you want to be influencing people positively or negatively. Leadership doesn’t start from the top—it starts with you.

This week, I want to talk about the subtle forces that drive us, aka our micro-motives. We’re diving deep into how these small, often subconscious desires and preferences shape our lives, choices, and even our sense of fulfillment. I’ll share stories about everything from my lifelong cardio struggles to nerding out on psychology as a clue to my own micro-motives—and why owning those inner drives can be the key to crafting a meaningful life. Identifying our micro-motives helps us engineer passion (not just follow it), build real talent, and align our actions with what matters most to each and every one of us.

There’s a phenomena that occurs whenever we learn something new, where once we’ve learned something, we can’t un-know it. Not only that, but we have a hard time remember what it felt like not to know it at all. As coaches and leaders, this leads us to a big problem—we need this knowledge and expertise to help our clients, but we can’t always get our message across in a way that lasts. If you want to impact your clients’ behavior in a meaningful way, you have to speak their language and understand how to communicate your ideas so they actually stick.

When your team or your clients can’t solve any of the problems they face without you, something has gone wrong. From my early days in customer support, where a salty colleague taught me the value of bringing solutions (not just problems), to my first management role where “Google it” became a legitimate policy, I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of creative thinking, ownership, and confidence holds teams back. Today we dig into the psychology behind why people don’t know how to solve problems—perfectionism, dependence, fixed mindsets—and more importantly, how to shift that dynamic through better leadership habits. You'll learn how to stop being the bottleneck, foster confident detachment, implement simple decision-making frameworks, and create a team culture that promotes autonomy, accountability, and trust.

The whole goal of this podcast and my business is to help people become a better, higher-performing version of themselves in life and in work. Luckily for all of us, there are three scientifically grounded, battle-tested principles of high performance that I coach every client through and rely on myself. You may get a bit of an emotional hit—negative or positive—while listening to these, and if you do, I highly encourage you to think about why that is and what that might mean for your life, your productivity, and the way you show up every day.

Part of coaching is changing minds, but as any coach knows, changing someone’s mind is no easy task. In order for someone to see themselves and the world differently, they have to come to the conclusion on their own—but you do have influence in leading them there. If you can get your clients to change their minds, you’ll change their results and revolutionize their lives.

Most people I work with are looking for ways to increase their productivity, but we’ve all got the wrong ideas on how to go about it. Imposter syndrome manifests as that constant internal feeling that we don’t know enough, that we lack knowledge and ability, and that we don’t have what it takes to play a certain role or follow a certain profession. Thinking less of ourselves can lead to anxious feelings and self-sabotage, but it’s important to know that imposter syndrome is a very common issue and everyone at some point has gone through something like this before.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny talks about how to deal with imposter syndrome. More important than trying to overcome it, Danny explains, is trying to get familiar with it and trying to understand where is this feeling coming from and what is triggering it. There isn’t a magic pill to get rid of this problem but according to Danny: ‘if you always do your best, it will eventually eliminate the sensation of self-judgment.

(This episode is a re-run from April 2022.)

“Growth is inherently uncomfortable. You have to let your old self die to become this new self and the side dishes of that are going to be insecurity, they are going to be inadequacy, they are going to be embarrassment.” – Danny Coleman

What is “purpose” and how do we find it? We tend to think that a purpose or calling is some magical entity out there in the universe that we spend a lifetime trying to find, but in my opinion, purpose is something we have to create. Purpose isn’t bestowed upon us by the cosmos; it’s a decision we make through our actions, intentions, and the way we show up in the world. With purpose, we can start shifting our perspective on daily tasks can transform the chaos and mundanity of life into something meaningful every single day. When the universe asks you who you want to become, you decide how to answer.

Communication is at the heart of coaching, but what does it mean to be an effective communicator? In order to communicate well, we have to be able to identify the communication killers we might be bringing to our conversations—which, by the way, we’re all guilty of, even me! Once you identify the way you might be killing communication in your life, you can build up the honesty, safety, and respect necessary to get your ideas across effectively.

Today is Valentine’s Day, and the cynics of the world would tell you that it’s a holiday made up by Hallmark and Russell Stover in order to sell more product. While cynics are right more often than not, they’re also less successful and far more miserable than the optimists—and romantics—of the world. On Valentine’s Day, we can celebrate all kinds of love, including self-love. There’s a lot of superficial advice out there on how to love yourself, but you already know that here at Take Care Radio, we like to take a more evidence-backed and practical look at what it means to love yourself, and how to get there if you don’t already.

Many people I work with have a goal to become more adaptable, and that’s a great goal—adaptability is one of the most psychologically healthy traits we can develop. Those with a flexible view of themselves and their environment are far happier and higher performing. The problem is, most people have a serious misunderstanding of what adaptability really is. Instead of seeking to give up control, they look to gain even more control, and to become better “multitaskers.” The secret to adaptability isn’t multitasking, and it isn’t doing more. Adaptability is about doing less, better.

Coaching is one of those skill sets that are simple, but not easy. If you’re a long time listener to this podcast, you’ll know that facilitating behavior change all comes down to relationships—if you can’t connect with people, you can’t expect them to change when you correct them. If you want to be a leader, you’ll need to practice these two habits.

When we think of people we admire, we often think about the people known for their acts of heroism and courage. Similarly, we even reflect on the times we’ve acted courageously and count them as the proudest moments of our lives. In any case, one of the most lauded and appreciated qualities is courage, and for good reason. Courage is the best catalyst we have for growth—the number one thing that prevents us from reaching our potential is a lack of courage, or fear. But one thing people get wrong about courage is assuming it only exists in large, dramatic moments. Most of the time, courage is a small, daily act. If you want to be successful in this life, all you need to do is be a little less lazy and a little more brave than the next person. There are no bold moments required to be courages. You can show up boldly in 4 different ways starting now.

In the personal development space, especially around the beginning of the year, I hear a lot of people giving out some hackneyed advice, like “Just change your mindset!” or “Get out of your comfort zone!” While well intentioned, this type of advice comes from a gross misunderstanding of human behavior and what it actually takes to grow in life. The way I see it, growth doesn’t happen a straight line; it’s a dynamic process that moves through different mental and emotional states. Today I wanted to share the 4 states of growth, and why sustainable growth involves embracing these natural and temporary states, even when they’re challenging. If you can move through these states consciously, I have no doubt you can create a life aligned with your highest possible potential.

We live in a culture that idolizes and obsesses over confidence—somewhere along the way, we internalized the idea that we should feel good all the time, and that the times we stumble are moments of personal failure. But it isn’t possible to feel good all the time, nor is it possible to just decide to feel confident and make it be so. There is no light switch that can be flipped, no magic words that can be said to make us confident. Confidence is contextual, and has to be earned. It’s all about effort, humility, and resilience. It can’t be built without struggle. If you’re willing to face those struggles and still get back up and keep going, you’ll find true confidence within.

One guarantee about being a human is that at some point or other, we’ll all be dealt some bad hands and some struggles in our lives. We can’t always control the terrible things that happen to us, but the one thing we can control is how we explain those events to ourselves, and what we make them mean in our lives. Those who decide to look for the good in those terrible moments—aka, optimists—can be thought of as naive or unrealistic, but in reality, choosing to see the best in the world has a critical impact on our happiness, performance, and life satisfaction. Optimists live longer, happier, healthier lives on average and when they win, they win big. The bad stuff is part of life no matter what, but if you want to be happy and fulfilled, you need to ask yourself what kind of story about your life do you want to tell?

We’ve made it to the holiday season, which for many of us tends to be fraught with family miscommunication. I’m lucky enough to have a good relationship with my family, but it wasn’t always this way and it wasn’t easy. Over the years, I’ve had plenty of difficult conversations and in doing so, became a better communicator. Humans are flawed, complex creatures that have unique perspectives, habits, values, and thought processes and as coaches and leaders, it’s part of our job to understand people and communicate in an effective way. Of course, it’s easier said than done, which is why I’m sharing 7 rules for great communication.

One of the most common struggles coaches, managers, and leaders all set to have is compliance—how do you get your clients and employees to stick with the things you need them to do? You can give someone all the tools they need to succeed, but if they don’t have that internal motivation, they get stuck. So while we can’t force anyone to comply and we can’t force anyone to be motivated, we can create an environment that is conducive to change, so our clients and employees can feel safe to grow.

In today’s episode, we dive into burnout—why it happens and how to prevent it. Especially in the US, we’re often expected to produce “more, bigger, faster” without purpose, a mindset that often leads to burnout. Physiologically, humans are wired for short bursts of stress, yet we face a constant drip of modern-day worries like job insecurity and high demands. This results in prolonged cortisol exposure, which can harm us physically and mentally. Beyond the physical toll, many of us experience “empty calorie” work hours, contributing to burnout because these hours lack true connection to our values. Y’all already know I’ve got some tools to help us balance our work, reclaim energy, and reconnect with a sense of purpose.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the greatest at supporting people through tough times. Have you ever been stuck? In a rut? It’s hard to define what it means to be “stuck,” but we all know what it feels like. It’s not quite depression, but there’s a feeling of meaninglessness, a craving for hope and life. It’s living on auto-pilot. Getting shit done, sure, but missing some unspoken piece… Sound familiar? I get “stuck” every few years, so I’ve perfected the art of getting UN-stuck and it all comes down to one simple formula: Change + Challenge.

This year has been my busiest yet when it comes to public speaking—both personally and professionally. In all these situations, I've found it incredibly helpful to use mental structures to guide me; they help me stay organized, remember key points, and avoid awkward pauses or clunky interactions. But structuring isn’t unique to me—it’s common in many fields. Musicians, chefs, lawyers, and even my wife all use structure to create. So today, I thought I’d share a few structures I use to build a foundation when I need to communicate effectively.

Delegation is as easy as telling certain people to do certain tasks. But when I work with coaches and managers it’s never quite as simple, and it all has to do with psychology. Are you surprised? I’ll be honest with you—I felt like phoning it in with the podcast this week. It’s hot and I’m tired, and I just didn’t want to sit down and make it happen. But in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about a concept from Steven Pressfield’s book Turning Pro, were Pressfield discusses three models of self-transformation, the most powerful of which he calls the professional model, aka “turning pro.” Amateurs dabble and wait for inspiration, but pros show up no matter what. They push through discomfort, build consistency, and rely on internal standards, not external validation. Turning pro is about creating habits, keeping promises to yourself, and committing to something bigger. It’s about discovering your true power and self-respect. Me? I want to be a professional, so even when I didn’t feel like showing up, I did it anyways.

Are humans inherently good, or are they born to be bad? There are centuries of discussion surrounding this question, and I don’t know that we’ll ever have a definitive answer on the topic, but I do know that our personal belief about the answer is an important signal to how we interact with the world, and especially how we coach and lead others. Our beliefs shape our behaviors and actions, so if you believe people tend to be self-centered, amoral, and generally “bad,” you’ll act accordingly. Conversely, if you believe and see the best in people, you give them an opportunity to rise to the occasion and who give to you as much as you give to them.

In my early 20s, I went through a period of self-inflicted struggles—poor communication, academic underperformance, and several personal challenges. At a low point, my sister Jill invited me to live with her, which marked a turning point in my life. Over the next three years, my life changed for the better in almost every way, and it was then that I realized the profound impact of mentorship and coaching. But what makes a great coach or leader? What makes someone not only loved, but respected, and influential? The best leaders strike a balance between high standards and high support, inspiring excellence while providing the necessary guidance. True leadership isn’t about being a drill sergeant or a cheerleader, but about demanding the best while offering empathy and encouragement. Leaders who master this balance foster real growth and lasting impact.

I love learning and sharing information as much as (if not more than) the next guy, but in order to be an effective leader it isn’t enough to simply know a lot—you need a methodology. Information is the base level, but if someone comes to you looking for help with change, you’re going to need a process to measure and help them progress along. Today I wanted to attempt to share my own self-development methodology, what I call the “Self-Development Ladder.”

When it comes to leadership, the material isn’t the thing that matters—it’s how you deliver that material. In this episode, we explore how leadership, energy, and influence profoundly shape those around us. A great leader can generate energy and engagement even when there seems to be none around, and we can influence others when we generate intensity, embody authority, and bring positive energy to any situation. When you bring the energy, you connect with your audience, and that leads to real success. Ultimately, we all make a unique impact on the world around us, and the we show up as leaders, coaches, and humans truly matters.

As managers, coaches, and leaders, it’s critical that people feel safe to come to you in times of need. By now you know that if you want to make a change in your life, you have a much better chance if you’re treated with kindness and compassion. Every person alive just wants to be safe to be seen for who they are, but there aren’t many people in the world who are safe places to be ourselves. So today, Dr. Jade Teta and I discuss what it means to make feel safe to be themselves and how to embody the kind of personality traits that make people want to work with you.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Do the thing, and you shall have the power.” You’ll notice how he said “thing” singular, and not “everything.” We tend to glorify people who make huge, sweeping changes and do all the things at once, but the truth is, sticking to small actions with consistency leads to big, long-term success far more often. Sticking to simple habits—whether in finance, fitness, or life—can yield exponential results over time. It's not about being perfect or following strict, rational plans; it's about finding reasonable strategies that keep you engaged and in the game. Small, steady steps can transform your life.

We talk about mindset a lot on this pod, and there’s good reason for it. Our mindset, whatever it may be, shapes our experiences, beliefs, and relationships—in short, it impacts every area of our lives, and especially for those of us who are coaches, managers, and leaders. In today’s episode, I discuss strategies for changing mindsets, and how embodying integrity and projecting certainty can make you a more effective and trustworthy leader, whether you're seasoned or just starting out.

If, by some impossible chance, you’ve missed it: the Olympics are currently happening. As I’ve been watching, I’ve been thinking a lot about perfection—these athletes are as close to perfection in their sports as is possible to be, and that’s why we celebrate them. In fact, “perfectionism” as a concept is something we tend to really value in our culture. However, not too long ago, psychologists considered perfectionism to be a form a neurosis—being “perfect” is unattainable, and the pursuit of it creates psychological distress. Unlike sports, life is not a finite game. There are no winners and losers, and you can’t be the best at everything. Olympians are experts in their fields, but they aren’t experts at all things. And just like olympians, maybe we need to embrace the “good enough” in our lives, and not just the things we have perfected.

Our health and fitness is foundational for every aspect of our lives, from our energy levels, our career goals, and even to our relationships… so what’s holding so many of us back from prioritizing those things? We need to put ourselves first in order to accomplish all the things we want to do, and a big part of putting ourselves first is integrating healthy habits into our lives on a daily basis. We overload ourselves with things on our to-do list and then abandon ship the second we miss a day. Today I’m talking with Adrian Wellman on what’s keeping us from consistency and how to overcome those roadblocks to become a priority in our own lives again.

The more I study leadership, the more it becomes clear that competence is the entry fee in having influence. You've got to be good at what you do. Not only does competence make you a more inspiring and influential leader, but it also builds your sense of self and confidence, but many face the Beginner’s Paradox: how do you develop confidence without evidence, and how do you build evidence without opportunity? This is where the concept of the Growth Mindset comes in. Just because you lack a certain credential or haven’t reached a specific milestone doesn’t mean you’re not an expert—there’s always room to become one. Brendon Burchard offers a framework that I love to identify experts through the 3Rs: role models, researchers, and results getters. Reflect on which type of expert you are and lean into that. There’s time to become all three, but you can always start leading now.

I don’t work with a ton of people who explicitly say that they hate themselves, but when I get to the root of their thoughts and behaviors, they don’t treat themselves like someone they like. I do this too! We’re extremely critical of ourselves, we constantly judge ourselves for the millions of things we think we “should” be doing but aren’t, and by the end of the day we have no emotional capacity or bandwidth left to do anything but zone out with food, endless scrolling, Netflix, or all three. We think its useful to beat up on ourselves but these self-critical feelings aren’t conducive for change in any capacity. If we wan’t to improve our lives, we have to learn to like ourselves.

One of the first personal development books I ever read had a theory that breaks down the needs of the human brain into 5 categories: status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. This book suggests that when these needs are met, the brain produces a “reward response,” which, in turn, creates a sense of safety and security and makes us more thoughtful, motivated, engaged, productive, and overall pleasant. Conversely, when these needs aren’t met, the brain produces a “threat response” which creates almost the exact opposite reaction. So as coaches and leaders, you can see why it’s essential to understand and meet these needs of our clients and employees. If we can help them feel safe and trigger that “reward response,” we’ll be much more effective at influencing, motivating, and engaging our people.

Let’s have a conversation about conversations. Look, it’s never fun to have difficult conversations (think setting boundaries, holding someone accountable, or easing hostility) but the best leaders are the people who are willing to get uncomfortable, have a chat, and seek to understand. So today, let’s talk about the different kinds of difficult conversations you’re sure to have as a coach or leader and how to facilitate them in an actually productive way. It might feel uncomfortable and you might not always get a perfect result, but talking about things will always be better than holding on to things unsaid and letting it fester into resentment. The magic you’re looking for is in the conversation you’ve been avoiding.

If you want to do anything in life, you’re going to experience some negative feelings. It’s just a fact of life and existence—we’re all going to suffer in some way or other. The real key to getting through it all and to live a meaningful existence isn’t a rejection of the hard things, but acceptance of them. If we can be willing to experience that pain, accept it, and still choose actions in line with our personal values, then we’re well on the way to being in the top 10%—hell, even top 1%—of everything that we do.

It’s a momentous day here on the pod—this is our hundredth episode. And while I won’t bore you with 100 lessons learned in 100 episodes, I did want to talk about what I think is the ultimate concern of this podcast, or the deepest, most fundamental priority of what I hope this podcast teaches you. So what’s it all for? If you’ve been around these past 100 episodes, maybe you’ll know: it’s that you have to lead yourself first, before you can lead anyone else. Today I wanted to share the best way to get yourself right first, the 5 essential elements for human flourishing, aka the PERMA model. If you can master the elements within the PERMA model, you’ll have the best chance of affecting change in the people you most want to impact.

The great Michelangelo once said of his sculptures, “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” I think the same can be said of motivation—our clients, coworkers, and employees have innate motivation, all we need to do is tune in to the right frequency to find what works for each individual. Today, I wanted to share a more practical view to motivation, because as we all know, you can’t force someone to be motivated, they have to do it themselves. When we use the 4 motivational dials, we give people the tools to be their best, most motivated selves.

Humans are social creatures. We’re wired to be around others, and what’s more, we’re wired to attune to the emotional states and even behaviors of the people we spend time with. Researchers call this social contagion—it’s the spread of emotions and behaviors through a group of connected social groups. Understanding and accepting the realities of this social contagion can help us see the bigger picture of our clients’ lives and turn us into not only better coaches and leaders, but kinder and more empathetic people in general. Fear and stress are highly contagious emotions, but joy and excitement can be too! If we show up happily, excitedly, and confidently, we have the opportunity to make a huge impact in the lives of our clients, employees, and anyone else we want to have a positive influence on.

If you’ve ever listened to this podcast (or any piece of self-help media for that matter) and thought, “well that’s all great advice, but it would never work for me,” let this be the one episode you take to heart. So many of us get stuck in a rut, feeling like we have no control over our lives. Psychologists call this a low “locus of control,” where we feel like nothing we do matters, that life is just something happening to us. The problem with that line of thinking is that it keeps us miserable and stuck without any reason to take action—why try to make a change if you think it won’t matter? Conversely, feeling a sense of control and ownership of our lives has numerous mental and physical benefits, and can create a larger effect as we impact the people around us. Leadership doesn’t have to “start from the top,” it can begin right there, where you’re standing now.

I’ve been challenging myself lately to listen and engage with people I don’t necessarily agree with to help fight against confirmation bias, and it’s going about as well as you might imagine. In this quest, I’ve started reading a book called Leadership BS which is all about why everything we do as leaders and coaches is nonsense, and leads to nowhere. People are as unhappy and unhealthy as ever, so what do we do? Do we give up, or do we push back? Look, coaching is hard, but that doesn’t mean its worthless. Even if you can’t help everyone, we’re helping someone, and that matters.

One of the most common questions I get from new coaches is “How do I structure a coaching call?” It’s easy to feel the need to discuss, teach, and address everything on every single call, but this can feel overwhelming and cause our calls to lack clarity and leave our clients anxious and unaware of where to start. That’s why today I’m sharing a 3-part formula to help you organize your calls by deciding what you should (and should not!) cover. It’s been an effective process for me and all of the coaches I’ve worked with, and I know you’ll have a much easier time with your clients and get them even better results.

There might be some debate as to who the greatest coach of all time, across any sport or discipline is, but to me, there’s no one greater than Greg Popovich. In some interviews, Popovich seems like the antithesis to what makes a great coach—he can be aggressively direct and he acts like a total asshole some of the time, but one this he does get is results and he does it all while being beloved by his players. Most coaches I know are terrified of being strict or harsh with their clients for fear of coming across like a jerk, so what is it that Popovich is doing that makes him the best in the world? He’s mastered the balance of personal connection and brutal honesty, all while integrating his coaching to the bigger picture of life.

Authenticity is overrated. I’m coming in with a hot take today, but hey, sometimes a hot take in needed. “Just be authentic!” is one of the most popular pieces of advice in the self-help world, but I think it’s a horrible goal to have. Sure, it seems so freeing to not care what other people think about you, but we’re human beings who need relationships and connection, and not caring about others’ opinions is a self-centered, awful way to create a meaningful life. Today, I’m sharing why I think “authenticity” is overrated and how to navigate being yourself.

The 2024 World Happiness Report was recently released, and for the first time in the report’s history, the United States dropped out of the top 20 happiest countries, largely due to a drastic decline in the happiness of the younger generations. So, how do we get our happiness back? I’ve always loved talking about and studying what creates happiness, and though traditional psychology focuses on what can go “wrong” with the brain, there is a ton of new research and evidence on things we can do “right” to increase that happiness quotient. Today I’m sharing 3 things to focus on that if we begin to do now, they’ll create an immeasurable difference in our lives even just 6 months from now.

A core tenet of my work and a huge piece of what we do as coaches, managers, and leaders is effective communication. Y’all know I love talking about how to talk to people. Y’all also know that I love even more is studies, and there are countless studies that show just how impactful great communicators are on the people we are trying to influence. Great communication helps us become synchronized, which in turn makes us better motivators and increases trust, which is one of the most important factors of efficiency that we have. It’s no surprise that communication is a powerful tool for us as coaches and managers, and luckily for us, there are 8 skills + behaviors I’ve found that super-communicators embody in their interactions.

Think about how hard it is to change yourself—if change was easy, we’d all be perfect, right? But we all know changing takes time and we often fail, so why do we think we could change others? Whether as coaches, leaders, parents, friends, or parters, the idea of helping someone to change sounds amazing, but the truth remains, you just can’t change someone who doesn’t want it. What we can do, however, is cultivate an environment that makes it easier for someone to change. If someone feels safe, connected, and they have someone leading the way, they’re far more likely to change alongside you.

I’ve been busy lately, and while it’s been rewarding and fulfilling to do so many things back to back, but all signs are starting to point to burn out. Our energy flow is a fundamental core of our ability to perform at a high level, and far more important than the amount of time we have, so it’s imperative that we develop systems to manage those energy levels. Energy comes in cycles and rhythms—it’s something we see in nature, and it’s no different in ourselves. If you want your energy back, you’ve gotta learn how to work with your natural ebbs and flows, instead of against them.

It might just be me turning into a grouchy old man, but recently I’ve noticed more and more communication habits that really drive me crazy. We tend to focus more on the tactics behind good communication, rather than understanding the principles of actually making people feel seen and heard. Our communication is more than just the words we say—it’s the way we say it, the emotions behind our words, all the things we don’t say, and so many more non-verbal cues. When we focus solely on tactics, we’re not effectively communicating. This year, I’m gonna challenge you to drop 3 specific communication habits, and I’m sharing what I think you should try out instead.

Got a little bit of a tough love episode for y’all today, and in my opinion, if you find yourself experiencing this one thing, you’re a bottom 50% coach or leader: defensiveness. Defensiveness is a toxic blind spot. It’s a self-protective mechanism but it redirects blame and hinders conflict resolution while obstructing personal growth. Self-esteem can be fragile and confidence is often paradoxical, but if you’re looking bot the antidote to defensiveness, accepting responsibility and fostering genuine dialogue and collaboration is a great place to start. Disagreeing with your clients, partners, or anyone you have a personal relationship with is like a dance, if you can find common ground and maintain neutrality, you can break free from the destructive cycle of defensiveness.

At the heart of it, this is really a personal development podcast, and one thing that people are really searching for right now in the scope of personal development is how to stop overthinking. I used to be a classic over-thinker and I’ve certainly worked with plenty of people who are the same, so if you’re someone who struggles with perfectionistic tendencies, low self-esteem, and rumination, this one is for you. And remember, these things are mental health practices, emphasis on practice, which means you’re not just going to flip a switch and understand everything perfectly. You don’t need to overthink your overthinking, you just need to take one step forward.

Being likable is one of the most powerful and effective coaching strategies, and one of the best ways to improve your likability is by becoming a great question asker. When we get better at asking questions, we understand people on a deeper level, we become aware of our unconscious beliefs and actions, and takes the pressure of “knowing everything” off our shoulders. In short, you’ll have higher client retention, have bigger breakthroughs, and resonate more deeply with your clients. Today I’m sharing 3 common question-asking mistakes as well as the 5 types of questions you should be asking your clients, your employees, or anyone you want to help change their behavior. I’ve thought a lot about developing a process for impacting and influencing people that coaches could master and become great facilitators for change, and while I might not know the whole roadmap yet, I am certain of what the very first step is. Study after study has shown that our relationships and connection matter more than anything else in our lives, yet we’re in a society with rapidly degrading social connections and an over-emphasis on the individual. Everyone is hyper-focused on themselves, but we’re all desperately seeking connection. If you want to make a difference to someone, we need to be the ones to lead from the front. We can be the one person in our clients’ worlds that see them, hear them, and make them feel understood.

Join us as we, seasoned coaches and close friends, put our heads together to decipher the rules of being a great coach. We share our own trials and tribulations, the highs and the lows, and the wisdom we've gathered along our journey. Our conversation offers fresh perspectives, and we assure you, whether you're a seasoned professional, a newbie coach, or just someone who frequently finds themselves giving advice, you'll leave with something valuable. This episode is republished from the Next Level Human Podcast by Jade Teta.

We go beyond the surface and tackle the tough topics - the importance of open-ended questioning, identifying and breaking detrimental patterns, and the delicate balance between progress and transformation. We all agree, a successful coach is not just someone with a remarkable track record but a genuine, empathetic individual who understands the human element in every interaction. But, do you think that's enough? Is it all about progress or does transformation hold equal importance in coaching? It's a heated discussion, and we encourage you to be part of it.

The world of coaching is complex, demanding, but equally rewarding. As we navigate this challenging terrain, we also throw light on the often overlooked aspect of coaching - the significance of choosing the right clients. We believe that understanding your niche, your audience, and building a strong relationship with your clients can elevate your coaching game. We also delve into the role of coaching in today's ever-evolving job market. So tune in, listen up, and who knows, our conversation might just transform the way you coach or even interact with those around you.

Even the best-of-the-best coaches only succeed in client transformation 40% of the time. If the highest performers still fail to keep clients compliant over half the time, then knowing the right way to talk about and handle non-compliant clients is that much more important. Behavior change is hard enough to do on our own, so helping other’s change is an even harder task, and we can’t beat ourselves up when our clients fail to stick to plan. In this episode, I’m giving you the exact formula you need to address non-compliance before it happens, and what to talk about after it does.

There’s a paradox we all face when it comes to confidence: we think that if we have confidence, we can avoid the negative experiences in life like anxiety, fear, or even failure, yet in order to build that confidence we so desperately seek, we must first experience—and even embrace—those very same negatives. If we seek improvement as coaches, business owners, and especially as human beings, we first need to develop a healthy relationship with being less than perfect. So if you find yourself sealing with a crisis of confidence, start with a huge mindset shift in how you see “failure.” It’s only through the struggles of life that we actually grow, mature, and become truly confident.

When you work with people, no amount of well-intentioned logic gets you results every time. As a fitness professional, you have all the right answers to your clients problems—eat lean protein and veggies, get in 10k steps every day, manage your stress, get enough sleep—but logical solutions can’t solve illogical problems. People aren’t algorithms; they have bad days, differing priorities, preferences, and years of societal programming that doesn’t go away just because you say so. If you want to avoid burnout, conserve the relationship you have with your clients, and keep going, then you’ll need to master the 3 rules of working with human beings.

I’m notorious for hating personality tests. Humans are infamously terrible at self-awareness, and personality tests become an excuse for people to act like the most base-version of themselves without any reason to change for the better. That being said—there is a personality model that’s been intriguing me lately, one that paints a more complete picture, and exists on a sliding scale to make room for the inevitable changes of personality. It’ll never be the be-all-end-all of understanding people, but it’s a useful tool for understanding ourselves and the people we work with.

Within every conversation had with our clients, we move either towards trust or away from it. You know by now that building trust with your clients is the single-most important thing you can do to make the biggest impact on their lives, and every conversation brings an opportunity to make your clients feel seen and understood. Every conversation has 2 sets of frames, and as leaders, it’s on us to get to the underlying depth beyond what’s being said. If you take the time to understand, manage your own impulses, explore your clients’ own frames, it’ll pay dividends of respect, trust, and credibility.

Our sense of trust in the world and the people around us is decaying—rapidly. We don’t trust anyone or anything, not information sources, institutions, our employers, not even our neighbors. But on a large-scale and a personal level, trust is crucial. Trusting societies and nations tend to report better quality of life metrics across to board, and trusting individuals live longer and happier lives. As coaches and managers, fostering an environment of trust is crucial—creating an environment of resilience, persistence, and transparency will ultimately will lead to results, even when life isn’t perfect.

Coaching, in essence, is relationship building. The relationships that we have with our clients will constantly be changing and it’s so easy to get distracted by the urgency of the moment that we forget how far we’ve come on our journeys together. That’s why today I wanted to share the stages of the client relationship, because our clients (and ourselves!) will constantly be growing, improving, and changing and we may experience all these stages several times over in our work with our clients. When we normalize these ebbs and flows, we can help our clients feel connected and understood, which is the secret ingredient to keep them showing up, even when the going gets tough.

Despite everyone’s best intentions, physical health in the United States keeps declining, but why is that? Our brains are evolutionarily wired to trap us within the Scarcity Loop—a trigger for impulsive, repetitive behaviors that make us feel good. And while those behaviors once helped us out in our more primal state, now they lead to all of us getting stuck in behaviors we might regret doing later, things like over-eating, compulsive shopping, or spending too much time on social media. This scarcity loop is why so many of our clients can’t seem to make a change, no matter how much they want to. We can’t always escape the loop, but we can break down the different parts of the loop in order to deal with it in a better way going forward.

Got a two-fold episode for you today, the first part being a recap of my summer trip with my wife, Kelsey, and the second part a little education on why you’re probably not as good of a listener as you think. Most people think they’re great listeners, but so few of us actually feel heard or understood by the people in our lives—that’s why becoming a great listener is the ultimate competitive advantage. When people feel listened to, they become less anxious, less extreme in their beliefs, more self-aware, and more open to change. Getting good at listening is important for us as coaches, but also as human beings, trying to make the world a little better. Listen to the full episode for 12 blocks you might face in your listening, or if you want to know the best-of-the-best from our west coast road trip.

There’s this pervasive belief that more always equals better. In a study (you know I love my studies) done out of the University of Virginia, participants almost unanimously added items, steps, and ideas when told to improve something, and did the opposite when told to make things worse. Somehow we’ve grown to see “simple” as a bad thing. But in my experience, so many things can be improved when we opt to streamline and simplify, rather than over-complicate. As coaches, it’s a powerful idea to keep in mind—people have limited time and energy, and if we look to take things away rather than adding too much to our clients’ plates, we may see far greater change.

It’s been a minute since I’ve had a guest on the pod, so I’m more than a little excited to have Kaycee Thompson on Take Care today. Kaycee isn’t a coach, but she has an expertise I think we can all benefit from—Kaycee is a therapist. Just like so many people in the coaching industry, Kaycee always wanted to be in the industry of helping people, and with a rise in mental illness occurring on a large scale, its our job to be there for our clients during the highs and lows of their lives. Coaching our clients through change isn’t always simple, but we can stay curious and stay genuine, we can help make a meaningful impact in their lives, no matter where they land in the Cycle of Change.

So many of our struggles in life come from a lack of certainty—in who we are, and what we want. Clarity allows us to move forward with purpose and conviction, and one of my favorite tools to achieve clarity in life is creating your Honor Code. An honor code is your set of guiding principles, a road map for when life gets chaotic and we’re not sure which step to take next. You Honor Code leads us to being the person we want to become, and having the life we want. If you’re not sure how to get where you want to go, tune in to this episode and create your own Honor Code to consult in all of your life choices.

One truth about life is that everything is always changing; we’ll never be in the same moment twice. Change can be many things—good, bad, and in-between—but when we resist change, we start to run into problems. In every moment we have a choice: we can react, or we can respond. Life needs a thoughtful, deliberate approach and when we choose to respond calmly rather than flying into a reactionary rage, it makes us better coaches, clinicians, managers. With the 4P’s, you can practice your responding so the next time something comes up, you’ll be ready.

I’ve wanted to do this episode for a while now, all about my entire coaching framework. This is something I’ve developed over thousands of hours spent researching, reading, and coaching and I believe that if you can operate with this method, you will help people perform at a higher level, comply better, and get better results. There are 3 components to this philosophy and you can use it in any leadership role in your life, be it coaching, managing, in your personal relationships, and everything in between.

Today’s pod is a quick one, but I wanted to share a method I use both personally and clinically. It’s a tool with benefits across the board—it improves mood, lowers feelings of depression and anxiety, improves physical metrics like blood pressure and immune function, and even improves relationships, memory, and career success. Must be pretty complex to have all those benefits, right? It’s actually incredibly simple: just writing for 20 minutes every day. Use it for yourself, recommend it to your clients, and get ready to feel the immediate impact.

As a coach, you’ll tend to fall into one of two categories: the Drill Sergeant or the Cheerleader. As listeners of this podcast, you’re most likely the Cheerleader—I am too! Positivity is an effective way to help our clients make change, but there is such a thing as giving too much praise, and that’s where most Cheerleader Coaches can go wrong. It comes from a good place: not wanting to hurt feelings, pass judgements, or deal with conflict and discomfort. But if everything is all-good all the time, our clients can start to second guess the truthfulness behind your coaching, and break the trust you’ve worked so hard to build. There’s nothing wrong with being the Cheerleader—you still can be!—but there’s a way to give feedback and be direct without straining the client-coach relationship.

My siblings recently called me out for being a “people pleaser” and while my first instinct was to deny it vehemently, that defensiveness was a sign for me to investigate why they might think that. Sure, I’m a sensitive and caring guy, but people pleasers are known for putting everyone else’s needs above their own, and I don’t want to be that person. It’s been shown that people pleasing leads to increased anxiety, burnout, codependency, feelings of powerlessness… the list goes on. So if you’re a people pleaser too, and you don’t want to be, I’m sharing 3 reframes we can all use to feel more control in our lives and remember that it’s okay to put ourselves first.

This episode is more geared towards my health and fitness pros out there, but it’s something everyone could learn from. There’s a lot of talk in the world about words like “lean” and “healthy” and whether or not those descriptors promote body shaming. And while that seems a little ridiculous at first, as health is something that can be objectively measured, it’s an important topic to be discussed. By now you know that shame is one of the least motivating factors for lasting change, and as health and fitness professionals, we want to be able to coach our clients to their best, healthiest selves and stay that way. Is that possible to do without body shaming?

There’s a phenomena that occurs whenever we learn something new, where once we’ve learned something, we can’t un-know it. Not only that, but we have a hard time remember what it felt like not to know it at all. As coaches and leaders, this leads us to a big problem—we need this knowledge and expertise to help our clients, but we can’t always get our message across in a way that lasts. If you want to impact your clients’ behavior in a meaningful way, you have to speak their language and understand how to communicate your ideas so they actually stick.

Most behavioral problems we see our clients struggle with aren’t behavioral at all—they’re emotional problems. The science behind weight loss or strength training doesn’t really matter much if your client just doesn’t care, or if they’ve got bigger problems at home to worry about. These emotional problems often lead to a cycle known as the “What the Hell Effect,” but you might recognize it by the phrase, “I’ll just start again on Monday.” The WTH cycle is driven by the shame of “messing up,” and then going all in on whatever “mistake” with the intent to start again the next week. We know that guilt and shame only lead to the WTH cycle perpetuating itself. If you want to help your clients get out of this hamster wheel for good, you have to learn to coach with empathy and non-judgement.

Y’all know I love a good psychology study and while they’re far from perfect due to the fact that human behavior is damn-near impossible to predict, they can teach us a lot about high-level patterns we all tend to experience. A huge component of coaching is being able to understand our clients’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and with the right information, we can get to know our clients on a deeper level, as well as equip them (and ourselves!) with tools to set them on the right path towards success. This episode shares 5 of my favorite psychological studies that will change how you think about your life.

We’ve all heard it (and have probably said it, ourselves) before: “I’ll start when life gets less busy!” The problem is, life never really calms down. Research has shows that we spend a majority of our lives experiencing and dealing with these “life-quakes,” both big and small. If we never took action until life settled down, then we’d never take any action at all. Instead of avoiding our life-quakes and using them as an excuse to stay the same, we have to find a way to work through them and just keep moving forwards.

Human beings are complex. If we really want to help them make positive changes in their lives, it’s not enough to just understand what they do, we have to understand why they do the things that they do. And similarly, coaching is so much more than just telling your clients a laundry list of things to change. A great coach is so much more. In this episode, I’m sharing 4 skills you can practice to become the best coach you can be.

When it comes to making decisions, we tend to have this massive fear of choosing the “wrong” thing, and it leads to paralysis. We all want to know the exact “right” thing to do to get the success we want, but as any coach can tell you: there’s no way to guarantee success for anyone. Interestingly enough, in cases like arranged marriages, having no decision to make at all seems to lead to greater “success” and satisfaction. Instead of over-emphasizing the decision itself, it’s a much better idea to put our focus on all the steps that come after. With the right mindset and effort, any decision can become the right one.

I’ve always been curious as to why some people can enact lasting behavior change while others keep struggling, always stuck in their same ways. It isn’t an information gap that holds people back, but rather the fact that we humans (yes, me included) are just terrible at identifying our own behaviors. We grossly over-and-under-estimate everything we do in a day: how much we eat, how many steps we take, how well we sleep, and the list goes on. If we want to change anything, we first have to get crystal clear on what the behavior is—that means, we need to track it, and not in the way we’re used to tracking things as coaches.

As we get older, convenience and “being reasonable” becomes a core tenet of our daily philosophies. We may like it deep within our comfort zones, but if we stay there for too long, life becomes monotonous and forgettable—and that’s the best case scenario. That’s where “misogi” comes in. It’s a Japanese concept that has come to represent an intense physical or mental challenge, something designed to get you outside of your comfort zone. When we push ourselves to our limits, we realize just how much we’re truly capable of.

I’m growing more and more disillusioned with the coaching and personal development world. That’s no clickbait, even though it might seem that way given that this is a self-development podcast for coaches, but it’s true. There’s a lot of good to be learned in that world, but there’s an underlying message that you always have to change, that you’re not good enough as you already are… I’m over it! If you don’t know already, let me be the first to say it: you don’t need to change anything. Well, except maybe the compassion you have for yourself. No more trying to shame yourself into change, because once you have that compassion for yourself and accept yourself as you already are, life gets a whole lot happier.

We’ve got a mental health crisis going on. Anxiety and depression levels are at an all-time high and as a result, we’re becoming less resilient to the everyday obstacles we all face. There are 3 paradoxes we face that are leading to the steady decline of mental health, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless to stop it. It starts and ends with us—we have the power to shift our perspectives so that we can make better decisions, worry less, and ultimately become more resilient in the pursuits of our goals.

Everyone wants to win the lottery. Even though we’re far more likely lose than ever win a cent, we still play. Even though saving and investing the money used to buy lotto tickets can yield a higher return, we still play. Humans want big, sweeping changes. We worship the “big break,” as unlikely and improbable as it is, and we’re looking for that big break in everything, including our daily habits. But waiting for the one moment to change everything is an all-or-nothing mentality that usually ends up being nothing. If you want to start making consistent changes, it might be time to start using the +1/-1 tool, and see how small changes added up can compound into a big impact.

My time living in Austin is coming to an end, and I’m ready to be leaving. Texas is a great place, but when you stay in the same place and surrounded by the same people you’ve grown up with, you start to take on an older version of the social role you play. You see, we all tend to act in accordance with how people treat us. So if we’re treated like a child, we’re more than likely going to act like one, too. As coaches, it’s so important to keep this in mind with how we interact with our clients. If you treat them as powerful, competent, and capable human beings they will rise to the occasion.

I used to make the mistake of thinking that everyone was always looking at me. It didn’t matter whether I was sure everyone caught my most embarrassing moments, or that everyone was checking me out at my best, I just felt like all eyes were on me. You’ve probably felt that way at some time or another because we’re all at the center of our own universes. This phenomenon has a name: the Spotlight Effect. We may feel like people are watching us, but it’s hardly ever true. Most people are so focused on themselves, they barely notice anybody else… and that’s a good thing! So many people hold themselves back from doing what they really want out of a fear of judgement from others. Once you realize nobody really notices or cares what you’re up to, you can start taking all the action that once scared you.

There’s a simple tool that people like legendary basketball player Lebron James, Oscar-winning actress, and even my own father, Jim Coleman, use to help them feel better, perform better, and make better decisions. It’s simple, effective, and can improve your life in a handful of ways. The technique? Refer to yourself in the third person. You may think speaking of yourself as a third-party makes you self-obsessed or narcissistic, but the opposite is actually true. Studies have shown that removing yourself from the center of your own universe makes you less arrogant, more thoughtful, and decreases your daily stress responses. If you want to feel better every single day, it might be time to start trying out the Lebron Method.

I’m on a crusade against (most) personality quizzes and typings. Humans are notoriously bad at self awareness. No one amongst us can see ourselves objectively and besides that, we aren’t finished products; we’re always changing. Despite my personal beef with personality typings, people do love to learn about themselves and knowing how the people you work with interact with the world can take your communication to the next level. There’s a personality and communication typing that I’ve found a lot of utility in when it comes to coaching: points vs. waves. People who are points are direct and sharp, while the waves are more fluid and indirect. Knowing when to communicate in each style can take your coaching to the next level.

As a coach, is it better to be the drill sergeant or a cheerleader? Should we be strict and stern with our clients or always be their #1 fan? It might surprise you, but research has found that the answer is actually neither—or more accurately, both. When we attempt change with high hopes for a successful outcome, the results don’t often look like how we wanted them to, often leading us to feel worse, both physically and emotionally. This happens all the time in fitness and nutrition coaching, and you might know this as “false-hope syndrome.” Our clients hire us, hoping to make massive changes, and when things don’t turn out exactly like they planned, they feel terrible, emotionally and physically, and give up before any chance for lasting change. That’s when it becomes our job to promote those long-term solutions by managing client expectations.

Defensiveness is a tool we use all the time to protect our feelings, our insecurities. It’s normal to feel, but we should be mindful about our defensiveness, especially as coaches; getting defensive rarely has the desired effect. We won’t feel any better, and it won’t impart any change to the people we try to help. In this episode, I’m sharing 3 mindsets you can take on to avoid coaching on defense.

Journalling is never something I cared to do in my younger years. I prefer fact and evidence-based practices, and it wasn’t until recently that I learned just how much a well-directed journalling practice can help us change for the better. All of us have handfuls of stories we tell ourselves about who we are, what we do, and our place in the world. All of your behaviors will try to validate the stories you tell yourself, so why not shape those stories into positive ones? This episode has 4 journalling exercises you and your clients can practice to start changing how we all see ourselves and the world around us.

Our words are powerful, and there are real world impacts of the things we say to and about ourselves every day. There are language shifts we can use that may seem inconsequential, but actually make a huge difference in how we interact with the world and the choices we make. Using the right words can help you embody the principles needed for healthy change, and if we can get our clients saying the right things, we can give them a deeper sense of internal motivation, and raise the chances of lasting behavior change.

I’m dropping a little truth bomb today: you’re not as great of a listener as you think you are. And if you’ve already written me off because you know you’re a great listener… chances are, you especially aren’t. Studies have shown than in general, we spend more than half the time thinking about something other than what we’re doing, and that includes listening. It’s a tough lesson to learn, but it’s one of the most foundational relationship and coaching skills. This episode is all about the power of listening, what it can do for us as coaches, and the formula you need to listen deeply and effectively.

There’s a seemingly contradictory way to see progress in our lives. When we accept ourselves exactly as we are, then we can change. Most people seek to change themselves or others through guilt trips and shame, but the number one “happy habit”—the practice that leads to greater life satisfaction and greater change—is self-compassion. It was through the compassion given to me by people in my life that I was able to find it for myself, and begin the transformation that led me to where I am today. The same principle works for our clients: when we treat them like the worthy people that they already are, they’ll begin to see themselves compassionately, and make real progress.

There is one skill you need in order to have the ultimate competitive advantage: connection. In essence, that’s what this whole show is about, and it’s for a good reason. Studies show time and time again that high quality connections consistently lead to behavior change. As coaches, the ability to connect to our clients is the best thing we can do to set them on the path to better results. The best news is that connection is a skill anyone can learn, including you!

Meal plans don’t work. Let me clarify: a perfectly executed meal plan can work for weight loss, but your client isn’t a robot and will almost definitely fall off their plan at some point. A meal plan is a rational approach to healthy eating, but once you throw that human element into the mix, they stop being rational. If you want your clients to have real and lasting results, you have to find a way to make their eating fit their life.

Here’s something you may not know about me: I’ve never actually applied for a job, so I know the importance of having a good network. Knowing and being mentored the right people can open doors for you to accelerate the growth of not only your business, but your personal development as well. But there’s one catch—relationships take real work to grow. Whether it’s with your clients or your coaches, no one wants to feel like your interactions are transactional. If you want to make real connections and build up a solid network of people who are looking out for you, you need to take your time. You need to take care.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the greatest at supporting people through tough times. As life goes on the people around us, our family, friends, and clients experience some truly difficult circumstances. Divorces, deaths, job losses, accidents, and even just plain old bad days can be really tough to hold space and know the right thing to say. But life happens, shit happens! And as coaches, it matters to show up for our clients.

Sometimes coaching feels like an uphill battle. There’s a complaint I hear a lot of: “my client just won’t listen to me!” It’s frustrating as hell, but what if we took that responsibility on as coaches, rather than blaming our clients? If you want to actually get your clients to listen, you first have to work on your own responsiveness to them. Why? Because responsiveness cultivates relationships, and those relationships is what enables us to impart real influence.

Have you ever been stuck? In a rut? It’s hard to define what it means to be “stuck,” but we all know what it feels like. It’s not quite depression, but there’s a feeling of meaninglessness, a craving for hope and life. It’s living on auto-pilot. This is personal to me; I get “stuck” every few years, so I’ve developed a simple formula to help myself (and now you, too) get “unstuck.”

There’s a ton of great information about habit building out there, so why are you (and me, and everyone else) still struggling to make our habits stick? When I think back to my own life, I realized I’ve never actually changed a habit intentionally, and that’s actually the reason why I’ve been able to make lasting change. Instead of changing habits, change your identity, and then the habits start to take care of themselves. Rather than trying to “eat more vegetables,” think of yourself as a healthy person, and watch how you’ll pick that habit up effortlessly. That’s how you get your habits to stick.

Part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Jade Teta continues our discussion of connection, and how it relates to our contentment. As we age, we tend to feel more and more content with our lives, and if you want to live life a little better, it’s important to focus on these moments. Sure, we may regret a few things here and there, but instead of ruminating on what you did or didn’t do, focus on practicing gratitude instead and you’ll find you feel a higher sense of well-being.

Let’s get real here for a minute. You probably aren’t going to get your clients the change they want. The odds are stacked against you when it comes to seeing transformational change! Your clients may want a full-body makeover, but it just isn’t likely, so it’s your job to reset expectations and show them the benefits beyond the scale. If they keep showing up, that full body transformation is possible… it just may take a little longer than they hoped for.

Sometimes good enough is just that: good enough. One of the biggest barriers to entry for beginners is feeling like everything has to be perfect. Beginners want to stay in the fantasy before they start, they get all the benefits of working hard without any of the pain and failure involved with getting there. We all know perfection isn’t achievable, so let’s let “good enough” be enough.

The human brain is more complex than we know. Every action we take is informed by our past. You can’t coach someone (or even force or shame them) into doing an exercise or maintaining their diet without taking into consideration their traumas or the psychological distress that causes them to act the ways they do. If you want to impart lasting change, it’s imperative to listen and be on the look out for ways to understand your clients, and work with them through not only their physical, but mental transformation. Keep things simple, help them find joy, and connection to something meaningful and you’ll have a client who achieves the change they came to you for.

There’s this cultural myth that you can and should do it “all,” whatever that means. You have the same amount of hours in the day as Beyoncé, right? Well, it’s a little more nuanced than that. Truthfully, we have a finite amount of time and energy in our lives, everything we do and every decision we make takes up some of that energy. So when your clients get to the end of the day and have no mental energy left to make the best choices for their health and fitness journeys, can we blame them? Let’s dismantle this idea that with the “right” time management, we can do everything and instead focus on helping our clients (and ourselves!) make the choices that are truly meaningful to us.

Our emotions are a key piece of us that cannot be controlled. It’s a common reaction to try to “fix” negative or undesirable feelings, but it’s not really possible and those feelings can end up turning into harmful behaviors if left unchecked. This is where Emotional Agility comes in. As coaches, it’s important to learn how to work WITH our clients’ feelings to enact positive change, rather than focusing on the myth of “control.”

In this episode, Danny describes the difference between emotional intelligence vs. emotional agility. He shares his F.E.E.L. Model to help you work with your clients as they navigate the emotions they experience in their lives. If you can help them live by their values, rather than their emotional impulses, you create an environment that will bring out their best intuitions and choices.

“Emotional Agility is using curiosity, acceptance, and our values to use our emotions towards positive change. It’s being flexible with our thoughts and feelings so we can respond optimally to things that pop up in every day life.” -Danny Coleman

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny unpacks the concept of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a coaching (and counseling and psychological) technique used in a variety of cases to help another person to be empowered and get motivated to make changes. When it comes to fitness coaching, MI can be very helpful in understanding and solving the clients’ current struggles.

Danny explains that there are different aspects of MI, highlighting four of them: the professional should not treat everyone the same, people have their specific and unique nuances; the professional should know that the expert is, in fact, the client; it’s important to give a layer of self-control to the client (autonomy); it’s important to take into account ambivalence (flexibility and sustainability). These general guidelines, if followed correctly, can really make a difference in someone’s transformation.

“We just want to be aware that each and every person you work with is a different individual, with a different story, with a different set of values, with a different set of circumstances and they needed to be treated as such.” – Danny Coleman

Welcome to another episode of Take Care Radio. Brandon tells us about his background working in dance performance and how there’s no secret to achieving success: all of our choices are responsible for our situation and making smart choices is the key.

In order to be successful in our jobs and overall careers, it’s important to always be engaged in reaching the ‘next level’, always be persistent, and always keep analyzing the ‘worst case scenario’. Most of the time, the fears of following our passion and doing what we love as a job are disproportional and the worst thing that could happen sometimes exists only in our heads. Tune in to listen to the whole conversation!

Every human being has a purpose in this life and an opportunity to follow this purpose. What happens most of the time is that this purpose stays hidden throughout life and the person, by fate or by circumstances, is not capable of putting it in action. The idea of someone seeing this hidden purpose (or hidden potential) in someone when even they don’t see it is the topic of this episode. It’s called The Morpheus Effect and you’ll learn all about it.

This episode features Dr. Jade Teta, one of Danny's oldest friends and mentors. Dr. Jade explains this concept of planting a “seed” in someone that ends up serving as an encouragement act. Making a parallel with what coaches do, they also have this ability to turn clients into heroes, inspiring them to believe more in themselves, and helping them discover what they don’t think they’re capable of becoming. Tune in to learn more!

“Stop trying to make them [other people] see in you what you would like them to see, but suggest suddenly to them in your actions, beliefs, and thoughts around them that they are this greater thing. And maybe – just maybe due to this – they will become that.” – Dr. Jade Teta

Tune in to learn more!

“Growth is inherently uncomfortable. You have to let your old self die to become this new self and the side dishes of that are going to be insecurity, they are going to be inadequacy, they are going to be embarrassment.” – Danny Coleman

In the world of coaching, there is one thing that is definitely on the top 3 things to have if you want to make changes: personal integrity. You can’t create significant results if you are not committed, consistent, and if you don’t believe in yourself. And that is something valid for professional coaches too: be there for the clients no matter what. And showing trust for clients is the first step of the job.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny talks about this concept of integrity and how important it is to create a sense of self-reliance. Do the thing that you proposed yourself to do. Change the habit that you want to change. Be where you said you would. These are simple things to accomplish but will make a huge difference in how you see yourself and what you think you can achieve in life. Tune in!

Coaching is not only about the idea of helping a client by sharing education and knowledge; it’s also about helping the client to take action. That is the true meaning of being a coach: seeing the bigger picture, setting realistic goals, implementing steps, and taking into account any miscalculation along the way. However, it’s very important to have in mind that getting results is also the responsibility of the client.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny welcomes Dr. Ray Hinish to discuss all things coaching, how to be a better coach, how to deal with difficult clients, and how to take a coaching practice to the next level. Dr. Ray explains the difference between coaching and consulting, highlighting that coaches should not accept every client – especially those who are not committed to true change. Two different concepts that are quite opposite but end up completing each other very well, are Confidence and Humility. When it comes to being a coach or a mentor, it’s important to have the confidence to provide knowledge and results, but it’s also important to be open to accept that your knowledge and information may not be the best option for a specific client. Balance, in this situation, is the key.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny takes you through this idea that we all have beliefs, blind spots, and biases that ultimately do not serve us or our clients. Identifying those and looking at things through a different lens, while changing our perspective and being mentally flexible, really helps us better our coaching practice, leading us to be more adaptable coaches and cooperative humans. Tune in!

“We all have our health, fitness, or coaching beliefs and foundations and this isn’t necessarily bad, this is a human trait. […] But they can be bad when they don’t lead us to success.” – Danny Coleman

The idea of ‘Success Threads’ is a pretty simple, easy-to-use perspective that can be utilized by coaches when working with different clients. Everybody is good at something and the key elements that eventually made a person good at something can be the same key elements that can help them with other areas, like fitness and nutrition. Pulling this thread to find useful solutions can be an option for coaches.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny dives deep into this concept. Humans love to be good at things and love to be competent with tasks. Each person is an expert in something, so what allowed you to be an expert in something can also allow you to improve other areas of life, specifically an area that you’re currently struggling with.

The confidence in one part of our life translates into another. Tune in!

“A lot of our clients show up and are great at what they’re great a, but maybe they’re not great at health and fitness. So our job is to pull away at those threads to find what they’re really good at, and then dig deeper to see why they’re good at it.” – Danny Coleman

It’s really easy to get frustrated and upset when a client doesn’t follow the plan. As a coach and as a professional, we might think that there’s a personal issue of why the program is not being followed or that we are not ready to work with people. This is simply a matter of understanding your client, exploring the situation, and looking for solutions that, not only help the client, but also make sense for them.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny talks about some behaviors that coaches might find when working with clients. Danny explains that true change is different for each person but remains the same for everyone in one specific aspect: it’s not linear.

You will also learn the idea of ambivalence and why two contrasting thoughts can be opposites but honest at the same time. Tune in!

“Don’t get frustrated. If change was easy then there would be no need for us as coaches.” – Danny Coleman

Unlike what is generally believed, motivation is not a gift, it’s a skill. And like any other skill, it takes practice, dedication, and patience to get to a certain level where you’re really good at it. The difference between motivation and any other given skill is that we need motivation everyday: to go about our day, to get to the gym, to make a healthy meal… but what if we’re really bad at being motivated?

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny talks about how to motivate people in general, but from a coach perspective. It’s really important to understand that motivation comes after action, and not the other way around and that’s a really helpful concept and mindset shift to teach a fitness client. Danny also explains that taking action itself is also a skill, which requires repetition. Tune in!

“We ultimately need to understand as coaches that people change when it makes a difference for them to do so.” – Danny Coleman

Helping someone to go from inaction to action is very rewarding, but also very challenging. At the beginning of their practice, most people who work in the coaching industry think that the client will blindly follow the plan and reach the goal in no time. The reality, though, is different. Every action is based on a belief and most of the times finding the root of the problem is the very solution for it.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny gives you a new perspective on how to solve your client’s problems in an effective and honest way. You will learn 3 simple steps to apply into your work methodology to really help your client get unstuck on their journey. Certain behaviors are only the top of the iceberg, and as a coach, it is your job to help the person find what is hidden below the surface.

“Great coaches aren’t great because they’re great at answering questions; they’re great because they know how to ask probing questions.” – Danny Coleman

The act of coaching means much more than the word “coaching” symbolizes. A coach that is truly engaged in getting results for their client needs to understand the client, what are their strengths and weaknesses, and how the teachings and processes can best be applied for that person in particular. It’s important to realize that coaching is not a “one size fits all” type of thing and that everyone is unique.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny welcomes Jill Coleman to talk about the ups and downs of being a coach and how this professional can preserve their energy and not get too involved with potential failures or setbacks of a client. Jill explains her methodology, highlighting the importance of taking the whole process seriously but not personally, and trying to transform client discouragement into simple action.

Just like pretty much everything in life, it’s wise not to expect too much from a situation. Learning how to navigate emotions and manage expectations for any goal is the first step to feel good about the process and avoid feeling overwhelmed. When we take this idea and apply it to the process of losing weight, for example, it makes even more sense to trust the process and let the chips fall where they may.

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny explains the importance of expectation management, which is a simple but not easy concept. More important than managing the expectations of a client is managing the expectations as a coach: it’s normal to feel responsible for creating results for someone but feeling anxious about your client’s journey will only affect a relationship that should be based on trust and reliance.

How we see ourselves and how we perceive the world is the result of a collection of thoughts and beliefs commonly known as mindset. Over the years, this small but super significant word has become really popular and has been spread all over social media, especially in the coaching industry. But how can we use mindset to achieve goals in different areas of life? And how can we use it to make others achieve goals as well?

In this episode of Take Care Radio, Danny subverts the well-known idea of mindset to make it easier to understand. Applied to the coaching industry for example, mindset is the missing piece on a fitness journey that people don’t quite get it. That’s why it’s important to know what mindset represents, how we can change it, and how it helps us see things from a different perspective and get different results. Tune in!

Fitness coaching goes way beyond setting up training programs or organizing meal plans for someone. These tools might work in the short term, but in order to create change and reach a goal the client (your client, maybe) must learn new habits and modify old behaviors. The psychological part of coaching is the foundation in which your client’s goals will be placed and that is what’s going to work in the long term.

Welcome to Take Care Radio! In this podcast, Danny Coleman will take you through all things behavioral change, mindset, psychology, and the mental side of fitness. The first episode highlights Danny’s background with fitness and what he intends to share on this platform. If you are a fitness coach or a health coach and was looking for a good source of helpful information and good content, you found your place! Tune in and see you all in the next one.
