Today, I'm joined by Alivia Fleur, all the way from a farm in Australia. In this brilliant quiz, Alivia asks the vital questions: is it a RAKE or a RADISH?
Alivia is a historical romance author who moved from writing short stories to novels when her characters kept showing up with copious amounts of emotional baggage, demanding it be explored. Her love of the Victorian era led her to create her first historical romance series, Tales from Honeysuckle Street.

Carrie Elks is the author of thirty contemporary romance books (and counting). Since 2014, she has been both traditionally and self-published, and her stories have been translated into over ten different languages. She lives in Essex with her husband, two children and a pug called Plato, and when she isn’t reading, writing, or loafing about, she enjoys long walks at the beach, listening to the crashing of the waves and pretending she lives in the cute small towns she writes about.

An enlightening chat with David Bickford, a British author and former Under Secretary of State and Legal Director to the British Intelligence Agencies, MI5 & MI6. David spent his working life diving into the cold murky seas of terrorism, espionage and organised crime. At the forefront of the battle against international terrorism he was among the first to predict its onslaught. David is recognised, both in the Agencies where he was awarded Companion of the Order of the Bath for his work and in the business he now runs, for his ground-breaking solutions to defeat the terrorists and international organised criminals who threaten us. His spy thriller book, Katya, is available now (audio as well) and his second book, The Informer, will be out on December 1.

Today my second Lit Chick is Kate Sawyer, author of The Stranding and This Family. She is also the host of the podcast Novel Experience, where she talks to authors across forms and genres. In her life before writing, Kate worked as an actor—also as an event and theatre producer, yoga teacher, shop-keeper, and as a waitress. Kate trained in acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and was a founding ensemble member of the award-winning theatre company The Faction. She also had her own production company called The Curious Room. In this episode, Julia speaks with the writing duo, Sarah Ferguson (a.k.a. the Duchess of York) and her creative partner, Marguerite Kaye, about the process of "collabo-writing".
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, a bestselling author, philanthropist and public speaker. The Duchess has published over 70 books including two autobiographies and other titles dealing with health, empowerment, history, art, as well as novels and children's stories. Her debut historical novel Her Heart for a Compass was published globally in 2022 by Harper Collins and was a Sunday Times bestseller. Her second historical novel A Most Intriguing Lady has been published by Harper Collins to critical acclaim in the US and UK in March this year, and is again a Sunday Times Bestseller. You can read her full bio here.
And because all writer’s bios have to end with where they live and how many pets they have: the Duchess lives in Windsor with five Norfolk terriers and two corgis.
Marguerite Kaye has written almost 60 historical romances for Mills & Boon, set in a variety of historical eras, and has co-authored two books with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. She is passionate about bringing history to life. Her character-driven and deeply emotional stories feature strong women fighting for independence and love on their own terms, and have been successfully published in over twenty countries worldwide. Marguerite lives in Argyll on the west coast of her native Scotland.

Jo Lyons is a huge wine and cheese enthusiast as well as the author of three bestselling romantic comedies including ‘Benidorm, actually’ which was shortlisted for the Comedy Women in Print Awards 2021. Jo spent years working in Turkey as a holiday rep, in the Alpes working at a ski resort and in the south of France trying not to put a vineyard out of business before, eventually arriving in Spain to administer some poor linguistic skills on the unsuspecting population of Valencia. She now splits her time between Albir in Spain and Newcastle where she regularly tries to avoid her husband and two sons in order to improve on her embarrassing grasp of social media and to write her next novel.

It's the final face off! Who will reign victorious in the end of season quiz - Ed or Julia?
All the questions are on the main episodes of this series, so regular listeners, the challenge is also on.. but even if you haven't heard all the eps, fear not, for the magic of multiple choice is (mostly) here to give us all (and especially Ed) a helping hand.
And stay on at the end for a frankly bizarre speech from Ed and a musical tribute to Ed (at least we think it's a tribute) from the ever talented mercurial hotshot Producer Jeremy.
This is Ed's last ever episode... but don't cry (or celebrate). You can keep track of his writing exploits at www.ed-crocker.com (if you have some time away from burning his effigy) and his book reviews and author interviews can be found at www.fanfiaddict.com. He's also on Twitter (@ELCrocker3), Instagram and Threads (@edwardcrocker), bluesky (@edcrocker) and TikTok (@ELCrocker3). Yes, that is too many socials, society is crumbling and we're all Tweeting about it. If you’re brave enough to let him edit your book, get a quote by emailing edcrockerediting@gmail.com.
Meanwhile, Julia will return in September for more of what made this pod the best in town and will have some new surprises and amazing guests in store. You ain’t seen nothing yet.
But in the meantime, make sure to pre-order her book Chasing the Light here. It’s going to be a doozy.

If you haven't listened to our Book Bite interview with her about how she turned her extensive and exotic travels into a fictional spy series, then do so now...Okay, done? Now Lucy is testing us on our knowledge of places in fiction. Can you name the place, title and author based on an excerpt from the book?
About Lucy Hooft
Lucy is the author of the Sarah Black spy series. Originally from the UK, she has spent most of the last 20 years living and working around the world in different locations that have served as inspiration for the books. She now lives with her family in Luderitz, Namibia, growing giant kelp, setting up a school and trying to find time in between to crack on with the next book.

The Trilogy of Swan pods concludes with a Richard Swan sci-fi quiz.
You've heard the bestselling fantasy and sci-fi author talk about the books that changed him; you've heard him give his writing advice and dish his publishing secrets.
Now take on the test of a lifetime, or at least of your Friday, and see if you can answer the mercurial nerd's most testing of speculative questions.
Remember: there's no money at stake. Just a lifetime's worth of delicious pride.
Hmmm, pride.

Back by popular demand, and also because we've already recorded this, today's Book Bites features the return of Sunday Times-bestselling SFF author Richard Swan. You heard about his own book and book influences on the main pod, now hear about his tips for writing, or more accurately, his tips for not following tips for writing. He also delves into the secrets of publishing and pulls back the curtain for us on what makes a book a bestseller, as well as, uh, kind of revealing the end of his Empire of the Wolf trilogy. Sort of. So much packed into one bite size pod - we spoil you, do we not?

Today Kathleen Whyman challenges the chicks with a quiz about marriage in literature. Who will be one step closer to that bottle of Bollinger: Julia or Ed?
Kathleen is an author, a journalist, and a knackered mum. She has two books out, Wife Support System and Second Wife Syndrome and her third book, Would You Ask My Husband That? is out on August 7, 2023.
Her books are humorous women’s fiction, inspired by her own feeble attempt to juggle a career with childcare, never-ending house ‘stuff’ and, outrageously, occasionally some time for herself. She is still struggling.
Kathleen lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and two teenage daughters. There’s a lot of door slamming.

Jodie spent 12 years working as a wedding photographer before returning to her first love of writing. Today we chat with Jennifer Page, whose debut novel, The Little Board Game Café, came out last month. Jennifer has wanted to write since she was 8 years old, but while she was waiting for inspiration to strike, she learnt to speak Dutch, taught music in various primary schools, directed a few operas, produced several episodes of BBC Songs of Praise and lived on a narrowboat. Now, Jennifer has settled in West Yorkshire with her boardgame-loving husband, and writes cosy romcom novels.
Jennifer shares her writing tips and tells us why looking for an agent/publisher is like dating.

L J Ross is a self-published international bestselling author. Her books have sold over eight million copies and in 2022 overtook Harry Potter and Game of Thrones on the all-time Amazon bestsellers list. Louise started her working life as a lawyer before making the transition to author in 2015 with her first book Holy Island which knocked Girl on a Train off the top of the bestsellers list at the time. Louise has set the benchmark for self-publishing authors everywhere and yet when you do a Google Search with the first words "Is L J Ross...", the first search that comes up is "Is L J Ross Married"? Well, for those enquiring minds the answer is yes, in fact the 'J' in L J stands for her husband James, who is also Louise's own partner in her own imprint, Dark Skies Publishing.

Nicola May is a romcom superstar and the author of 16 romantic comedies, all of which have appeared in the Kindle Bestseller Chart. Two of them won awards at the Festival of Romance and another was named eBook of the week in The Sun. The Cornershop in Cockleberry Bay became the bestselling Kindle book in the UK across all genres in January 2019 and was Amazon's third best selling novel in that year. Nicola campaigned successfully for the introduction of eBook charts in the publishing trade press and was described by Winifred Robinson of BBC Radio 4's You and Yours as "the invisible bestselling author". And why is that? It's because Nicola is fabulously self-published.

Friday Quiz time! Ed has written a quiz that you can technically get 100% on without knowing anything due to the magic of multiple choice. But of course you won't need that...
All you have to do is pick the book which you think has sold the most. See Tolkien and Christie do battle with Dan Brown and Charles Dickens and, uh, the Thesaurus. Who will emerge victorious?

It's Friday quiz time again!
Chances are, you've read or are reading a self-help book. Whether it's purging those negative emotions from your life or coming up with a set of rules to help you live it, chances are these hallowed tomes will find their way to your bedside in this age of self-doubt and perpetual crisis. So it's entirely appropriate given the immense seriousness of some of the topics they cover that the quiz today is immensely trivial, specifically:
Can you fill in the missing words in ten well-known self-help titles?
It won't change your life, but it will keep you entertained for ten minutes. Wait, maybe there's a self-help book in that...

Are you ready to start approaching agents, but not sure how to formulate your letter? Then this is the podcast for you. Ed puts his editor hat on and takes us through his guidelines for a well-thought out query.
What is a comp?
What are the sections in a query?
What are the biggest mistakes he’s seen when he runs his query letter surgeries?
How many words should it be?
Julia and Ed cover all this and more.
And if you want Ed to look over your letter, he does offer editing services. Email him here.

Frances Quinn grew up in London and read English at King’s College, Cambridge, realising too late that the course would require more than lying around reading novels for three years. After snatching a degree from the jaws of laziness, she became a journalist, writing for magazines including Prima, Good Housekeeping, She, Woman’s Weekly and Ideal Home, and later branched out into copywriting, producing words for everything from Waitrose pizza packaging to the EasyJet in-flight brochure.
In 2013, she won a place on the Curtis Brown Creative novel writing course, and started work on her first novel. The Smallest Man was published in 2021 by Simon & Schuster with her follow up, That Bonesetter Woman, set for 2022. She lives in Brighton, with her husband and two Tonkinese cats.
