Social Media and Artificial Intelligence has cheapened the cause of a Free Press and is threatening the existence of professional journalism. Authentic City is the antedote to Artificial Intelligence and Social Media. As we build the infrastructure in our communities, we start to train a new breed of authentic journalists; creative directors; songwriters; producers, authors; filmmakers and presenters. The idea is to take the information super highway and curate the information that really matters, and build new bridges next to the rusting beams of the internet. New York and New Jersey attempted to replace The Tapan Zee Bridge by building the Mario Cuomo Bridge next to the decaying structure. It seemed like a great idea, until the shiny new Cuomo Bridge showed signs of poor engineering. It seems that too many times integrity is not an element that modern infrastructure builds in to expensive city projects. It would be like Zuckerberg building the New Jerusalem next to Facebook (or Meta).

With all the money I spent on degrees in Ministry, Leadership and Communications, and founding a Creative Practice, where am I ministering, leading and what am I communicating to my family, my neighbors, my industry and my audience? There was an exercise that I had done in a job that was to write a resignation letter. In Soul Work, the first step is doing just that starting out with "I Surrender All." On this radio program- we have five half hour shows left. On a hot Denver afternoon in August 1965, the FM studios at KLZ-FM were invaded by a young man from Philadelphia. Bill Gardner had a stack of .45 RPM single records with colorful logos that he had just bought from a local record store. In the studio were the Classic Music -"long hairs." The youngster addressed the middle aged commentators; they took their records and exited the booth. And Gardner changed the FM airwaves - forever. "I don't think that Denver really knows what they started. Rock and Roll on FM was a crazy idea at the time," Gardner said. "When I entered the studio, and played "California Girls," by the Beach Boys, we were off and running." Rock and Roll is a mainstay today on FM, and Denver still is an Innovator when it comes to Album Oriented Rock. Gardner brought in DJ, Max Floyd, (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), and Oddy Cloney who were the anchors of KLZ- FM- The Innovators! This is that story, along with the Rock and Roll Music Promoter, Barry Fey; The Beatles at Red Rocks; Jimmy Hendrix and several great sound-checks and interviews about KLZ- FM, the Innovators.

The latest reports on labor were tainted with false reports. The numbers of jobs created were inflated and the morale was slightly deflated. There should be a report on how many people are in the wrong jobs, that have little to do why they were created. In the next ten weeks, you will hear the story of "Soul Work- Finding God in Your Entreprenuerial Pursuits," and hear ways to breakaway from, be more of a part of, and start something more for your Soul!

Hello everyone, this is Richard Arnold Beattie, producer and co-host of Useful to God. On this day in America, we are beginning the Republican National Convention. As a journalist I want to take you back in history to August 5, 1956 to the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA. While Dwight D. Eisenhower - an American Hero accepted the run for his second term as Commander and Chief, his remarks were unremarkable, save for the last minute. He evoked, Lincoln and Jesus with the "House Divided quote." You may recall that the Pharisees attempted to divide Jesus' from his mother and brothers by saying that "He was possessed." As we begin a short series on Media and The Presidency, we are at the Eisenhower Library in Abeline, TX. And so, Eisenhower is on my mind! Ike told the crowd that we have a choice during these divisive times- we can employ- "anxiety," or "Faith." In the coming days, we will stop in Independence, MO and walk the Truman Library and then Hyde Park and FDR. All of these Presidents were heard on KLZ Radio when they spoke about The Depression, WWII, Korea and The Cold War. As you listen to the speeches this week from Michigan, remember, the choice, fear, anxiety, or faith in God. Here is that speech by Eisenhower, August 5, 1956.

Jones Beach Marine Theater was a special place to see musical theater. It is geographically 40 minutes from Broadway, yet in the community of musical theater it is very much a part of the Tony Award lights from stars, directors, producers and crew. It is where so many actors revived and originated roles, in a bigger than Broadway scale. Constance Towers and Richard Arnold Beattie give a behind the scenes look at the nightly business of the theater by talking about their shared experiences at Jones Beach Marine Theater from The Sound of Music in 1970 and 1971 and The King and I in 1972. This week, on chapter 3- From Broadway to Jones Beach.

The freedom to become is often taken for granted. And yet, it is what is becoming of us that is not always clear or honored. In this useful conversation, between theologian and academic, Dr. James Spencer and Broadcast Journalist and Documentarian, Richard Arnold Beattie, there are soundbites from political ads; sermons and interviews that are part of some of the freedoms we enjoy in America, (such as "freedom of speech" and "Freedom of Religion.") Those freedoms can be expressed in how we relate to God and our neighbors. In between part one and two are two image spots, and culture clips, that help illustrate these ideas. Usefultogod.com.

The neighborhoods where I have dwelled-have been urban, rural, suburban and inner city. Some have been more "authentic" than others. In an age of Artificial grass, synthetic energy, and social media, I think about the folk and spiritual authenticity that was handed down to me, in sound and pictures, theater and songs, food and touch- and I wondered if the divisions that we are experiencing now, have something to do with the loss of some of those authentic communities- Lets get real!

Listening Room with Faces Anthology . The combining of two concepts is what brings out dimensions in media. Stories and songs of a time period also brings out an understanding of commonality between two or more sides that divide neighbors. The concept of Listening Rooms that can share the songs of an era where the living elders have experienced the music and lyrics of the past; take it to the present and make it real in their communities is how we get to "authentic cities and communities." It is the stories and experiences of the diverse that brings out the sound of a vision; the smells of the food trucks; the collage of tastes ; and the touch of the fabric of life. And we realize that in the differences we are connected by those differences, through the songs; in the stories; tastes and smells and the touch of a hand that tells us "It is going to be alright." The rhythm of the morning, the birds the wind, a symphony, the rhythm of the morning. Eyes wide open, gratitude, a touch of rising attitude, the taste of brewing magnitude. It is the rhythm of the morning.Fingers play on black and white keys. The rhythm of the morning. The busyness of the birds and bees, the rhythm of the morning, the hope, the peace we enter in. The love and joy is where we're going. This is the rhythm of the morning.
Sun rise reflects, mountain shine. The rhythm of the morning. Sailors delight, or sailors take warning, the rhythm of the morning. The promise of a brand-new day, singing old songs in a brand-new way, we look to tomorrow, and pray for today, the rhythm of the morning.
Fingertips play on steel string guitar. The rhythm of the morning. Up to the sky and the morning star. The rhythm of the morning. The story is told by the next in line, the usefulness of rhythm and time, the traffic stops, and the bells will chime, the rhythm of the morning.
Everyday, has its ebbs and flows. The mystery that nobody knows. Generations gather, a time of rest, to share, to live, a time to reflect. We live, we die, we give, we bless. This is the rhythm of the morning. The rhythm of the morning

Audio Learning comes from hearing and doing the Word. There is no better way than to hear and do that, than on the way to work. Hi, everyone, it's Richard Arnold Beattie and for years I have been riding the aisle of commutation by standing and holding on to the center pole between the secular and the sacred.
Then I began to explore the inward waiting room just before my stop and starting my workday. For me, I hear His Word, and images flow through my Soul. I learn from what He has portioned to me.
The images from the sound of His voice "ring in my ears and resound through my thoughts, what I have done, what I still need to do, and the strength to communicate that. And then, the ultimate audio/visual plays on the screen of my mind. "Be Thou my Vision." As the door opens to that station, I shuffle with the crowd, eager to get to work. I see, the sacred and the secular, on the platform. They are all heading to work. Some are confident, others annoyed, and some look hesitant to face their work. What if, all those people learned what we know. I've missed my connection before. I've been late because of it. However, at this stage of my journey, I've learned to listen, learn and live in the waiting room. I've listened to Hope, I've heard and felt at Peace, I have found Joy in the collaboration and I have love for my co-laborers. And then suddenly, God creates this Advent of Media in Ministry and Leadership. My mission is to communicate what God will complete in us, if we learn to listen. If we learn to be proactive and walk together as Soul-workers.

Can I play?! Welcome into the Listening Room at Legends. We have done shows on the sound of Movies and the sound of seasons; and today here is the sound of humor. But there is a disclaimer- The music is not where the humor will be found, it is the narration of the in between. Where else can you find a show that has Tony Bennet, Simon and Garfunkel; Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Neil Diamond and Elvis- in the same listening room? No. Not Ed Sullivan- although that is true. It is in the Listening Room- the quintessential, creative, studio experience.

Hey everyone, Its Richard Arnold Beattie, and you entered the Listening Room. It is a few doors from The Songwriters Gallery, and these creations have been Folk Processed -for your protection. Last week, on the program, we listened to some of the Motion Picture Songs and Soundtracks from the sixties and seventies. Through that we were able to make a connection from the radio airplay that was diverse and inspiring and that defines our mission of bringing listeners into a quintessential creative studio. It is not the Twilight Zone- it is the Listening Room with Listening Room Technology, from a Listening Room Library that we have collected and digitized; Listening Room Concerts, and Listening Room Originals. It is a laboratory, of experimental sounds; a kitchen, of acquired and familiar tastes; it is a classroom where auditory learning and educational audio resources can be heard, in five senses. Yes, feel the rhythm of vibrations, see, the inner game of music and poetics; taste the flavor of sound and memories, and smell the aroma of time, place, people, and things. And by the end of this hour the experience will touch each sense, will touch you, when you reach out and touch it. Quintessential. Creative. So sing along, dance, take it in and share it! Welcome to the Listening Room! (Dancing in the Street, Poets Row and Celebrate)

“The cause is to disrupt the damaging effects of social media on individuals, relationships and community. In that, I want to divorce myself from social-media through listening room technology, authentic and thoughtful content that I can leave behind after I am dead and gone.” Richard Arnold Beattie

What makes us “Quintessential?”
Audio Vision
Audio Creative and Production first is heard. Then the receiver of this audio, gets a vision, a scene in the theater of the mind. The sensory stimulus of Sound can also produce the smells of a time, a place, the scent of a memory and people. A song can remind the receiver of a taste of food or a drink or a freshly picked orange from the family orchard. That is what the Listening Room can bring out at home, through work and in community. Are you hearing this? We are listening. To experience the sounds of The Listening Room, Email paidtothinkradio@gmail.com.
The sound track of community starts at the Luthier’s bench, going with and against the grain of a tree. When the work is finished, a natural reflection glows from the rounded, three-dimensional instrument. The creative sum of the woodworkers’ thoughts and the Creator's original plan. The timeless song from the tree, wood, steel, words, music, the smell of sawdust, the taste of the earth, the view of the writer, the sound of music and the voice of the Father, in quintessential rhythm of the new day. Wood tracks, traditional, original, spiritual and seasonal. Listen.

Perfectly calibrated for the results we are getting. Greg Finke. How about you? Listener. Are we trained soldiers in a culture war? Or are we trained as athletes ready to run a race? And to play this culture game as cunning as snakes and as innocent as doves. Clips on Marxism in an address to the parliament in London. Or comments on the culture war in a conversation of ideas. Greg Finke author and the president of Dwelling 114, and Dr. James Spencer president of Useful to God and The Moody Center. A useful and thoughtful conversation. There was an excerpt from a show we did last year, Peace Talks to a culture at war. Next week Greg Finke will be back as we continue this audio docu-series we are calling, Culture War and it's effects on Humanity. For more go to Useful to God.com, I'm Richard Arnold Beattie, Crawford Media Denver.

Aren't you tired of the culture wars? No side is winning, and it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. In a free country, that actully has seen some uncivil and civil wars in the name of entitlement. I see you nodding your heads. But it's not what you think. Entitlement is the slave owner who kept people in chains, and as property, as if any person could own another person. Entitlement, is fighting for that right to keep it going and to think you have a right to dehumanize another because it is a family right.
I think what we really need is to cease fire and let the games begin. Let's look at the playing field as 50 states that work together as a team. Let's call it the melting pot.

“Christian participation in politics should not be so driven by the issues that we become incapable of adapting to become ‘all things to all people that by all means I [we] might save some’ (1 Corinthians 9:22). As the Apostle Paul interacts with various groups inside and outside the community of faith, he adjusts the way that he relates to those he is addressing. Paul does not compromise his convictions or scratch the itching ears (cf. 2 Timothy 4:3) of his audience. Instead, he ‘speaks the language’ of those in his audience. He doesn’t convey the truth without considering how his speech and actions will be received.

A study of the history of cultural conflicts, beyond- the crusades. As far back as the 1870’s in Germany, there have been “organized” Culture struggles. It was at that time a struggle between the German government and the Roman Catholic Church. Kulturkampf was a seven-year political conflict between 1872 and 1878, when the Catholic Church was led by Pope Pius IX, and the Kingdom of Prussia was led by Chancellor Otto von Bismark. The conflict was primarily about education and religious appointments in the Prussian kingdom, which the conflict was whether or not Germany or Prussia was a Roman Catholic nation! Sound familiar?
http://www.legends953.com
Now, in todays version of “The Culture War,” there is a sociologist from the University of Virgina, John Davidson who in 1991, wrote and published a paper titled: “Culture Wars: The struggle to define America.” Yet if you go back to the 1970’s and Jerry Falwell, the “Moral Majority,” the NRA literature, The John Birch Society and even the concerns of a child psychologist in California, who was so concerned that he started a ministry, called “Focus on the Family,” mainly out of concern about the assault on the traditional family. Dr. Dobson, first engaged the culture and increasingly led a religious and political fight for the soul of our nation. Does it matter how the current culture war began or who started it? The main thing is that is anyone called to engage in culture wars, or are we called to engage the culture?

The connection between community and church and a mental health ministry reaching out and helping other churches is the ministry that keeps on giving. Beth Lang is back to discuss this area in the Denver metro and Front Range of Colorado. Contact Coloradocommunity.org. Richard Arnold Beattie

Connection is what it's all about. The audio guide to Counseling Culture involves the church, clergy, counselors, the culture in our communities. The church is the first place where most individuals go, when they are dealing with Mental Illness, even with serious mental issues. Dr. Michael Stanford a psychiatrist from Houston, Texas writes about this in his book, Madness and Grace: A Practical Guide for Pastoral Care and Serious Mental Illness. Locally in the Denver Metro area there is Colorado Community Church in Aurora, CO. This is a continuing report on Counseling Culture and my conversation with Beth Lang, Director of Special Ministries which include Mental Health Ministries at Coloradocommunity.org. Richard Arnold Beattie:
On a cold day in 1926, an entourage of “suits” flocked to a sand bar on the south shore of Nassau County, on New York’s Long Island. While if there was an aerial view of this gathering, one may have thought that it was a penguin migration. In fact, it was a meeting with some of the world’s greatest engineers, architects and city planners. In the center of this professional flock was a balding, rather serious gentleman. He is known as Moses- Robert Moses that is! To that point, known as the master builder of the five boroughs of New York. The most powerful man who was called by many as a “Power Broker,” this Moses, at that date and time, was on one of his very first assignments as the head of the newly formed, Long Island State Park Commission. While the group “brainstormed” what to do with this sand bar, Moses began writing on the back of an envelope. Or was he drawing? A little bit of both as it is related. Robert Moses, was drawing and writing his vision for what the sandbar would become. And in between the roadways and the parking lots, was a plan for pedestrians, swimmers, golfers and clean family entertainment, “the sweetest music from Broadway to Jones Beach.”

Is all art creative? This is not a multiple-choice answer and it is not subjective! Richard and James have a useful conversation about the new book from Dr. James Spencer, "Serpents and Doves." When Art is our act of worship and it is set apart from the secular- then that is creative art. Secular art- is Pop Art. And Pop Tarts are a breakfast food with no nutritional value.

I'm giving up fudge for Lent. I was watching a cop show the other day
and the officer is getting ready for his shift and so -he is putting on his belt of righteousness, his holster of truth. He fastens his armor of protection and his "lens of accountability." That's right, he behaves and performs much differently, with a body cam. And he treats people better. He's much more careful about the stories he tells, and not making himself the "hero of his own stories." He doesn't cut corners as much and he doesn't fudge the numbers anymore. That is why I am giving up fudge for lent. If cops can change so can journalists. Get a Body Cam, and give up Fudge for Lent! I'm Richard Arnold Beattie and that's Audio Journal for Wednesday, February 7, 2024.

Halfway up to the sky, Moon is just over my eye
We're back in the saddle, we need to skedaddle,
we can make it by morning Hardscrabble.
Forecast is calling for rain,
It will snow in the higher terrain
Coffee is hot, but it won't help lot
The eggs are hard scrambled in Hardscrabble
Bridge
But we've been here before
looks pretty much the same
But who knows what's in store?
A little blood mixed in with the pain
it'll wash out in the rain
Over the mountain range
mud season in the pouring rain
We mutter, we babble
we dibble and dabble
at the very top of Hardscrabble

From the year 2000 to 2009, I produced a monthly seasonal CD of promos and advertising for Briargate Media. Since CDs went the way of the cassette tape and radio is going the way of the video store- and videos have gone the way of you tube, and Tik-Tok, creativity has been getting pretty brandish! There was a time where the image spot defined how you sounded! And how you sounded was a big part of how people thought of buying into your message-or not. Videos are no good without Audios! So, in February 2024 the only podcast and audio cast that is based on audio journalism, creative interviews, creative audio programming, features, audio documentaries, audio publishing, audio musical soundtracks and original music scores on the artist who use to be known as the "Promo-CD." Dr. James Spencer joins Richard Arnold Beattie in a conversation about how "trying to fix a broken world," can be a futile experience, if we are trying too hard. The world will still be broken after we are long gone. It is better not to fight a battle that does not belong to us. It is far better to "trust God and not to lean on our own understanding."

Okay, so I go to the Doctor and he asks me “How long have you had this problem.” Well, I hemmed and hawed a little bit – and then I said, “All my life.” He looked alarmed and then he exclaimed- “All Your LIFE? You’ve been seeing spots?” No! Doctor! – All my life – I’ve been hearing spots! One- minute spots – two-minute spots, really well written spots, and voiced with sound design and I hear spots that get results! They are very good spots! The Doctor looked at me, then he looked into my ears- and asked me- “Do you know the legend of the Spotted Rabbit? And I feigned ignorance. The spotted rabbit, has never been seen, except for a very well-defined spot on his back- and yet only people who are tuned into a certain frequency hear him… Be vewy, vewy quiet! I admitted to the Doctor that I do hear the spotted rabbit, and that I have spotted the spot when I looked at where the sound was coming from. “Will it ever go away?” No, replied the Doctor. Unless you lose your imagination. Thanks Doctor that hit the spot!

Hello everyone,
Sound Century is going into our third year. And as a non-profit dedicated to the recording arts , we have decided to put our money where our microphones are! This annual report was written, hosted and produced by our founder, Richard Beattie, like an audio cast for anyone who is interested in recording arts, the business of media and protecting, preserving and producing great audio. This is an outline of ideas of the next ten years of audio and sound design, audio learning and audio resources. Those who hear this, will continue to collect, create, cultivate and curate the sound of the past century as well as create and curate the soundtrack of the present and the next sound century. This annual report ventures to present what we gathered and what we will be looking forward to. If you would like more information about Sound Century- e-mail soundcenturyoriginals@gmail.com.

For many years I wanted to get back to my roots in music. The Folk process of passing down music in families - was often in the kitchen, sharing stories. Later it was on long car rides. This collection of Scottish ballads, penned by Burns; Beattie, Lauder and others was taught to me by one or two voices. My grandfather Charlie Pop (Charles Beattie) and my father Robert Beattie. With Burns day coming up - I raise this toast to those men who gave me appreciation of a solo song that bursts into story.

It is a long annual survey. Where do most Americans go to find help with Mental Health? According to Barna Research- it is the church. This goes for over 90 percent of the entire community in rural, urban or suburban communities. No matter if people are church-goers; atheists; agnostic; or evangelical. The first line of defense in healing America-is the church!

Come and see. 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31** I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[a]
Father Desmond's commentary inspired a lot of music and collaboration. Here are two pieces with no guitar of Agnus Dei and The Gloria with a bit of percussion.

The Daily Gospel with an element of The Mass, written and sung . This is my offering. An Audio Cast, with a Homily by the late Father Donald J. Desmond. A guitar and musical score, and each day a different element from the daily Mass. Here is the story of The Baptist from John 1, 19 through 28.
John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders[a] in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[b]
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 “I baptize with[c] water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
So many years. We sat and spoke to Father Desmond- and each year, we played "Prepare Ye," from Godspel. A good an obvious choice. Yet the elements of The Mass, are the real songs- of honesty, humility and healing. At the end of the Homily, my offering is the Kyrie and a Confession. Without the guitar. Lord Have Mercy.
Elements- Confession
I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words; what I have done and what I failed to do. And I ask for you to pray for me, to the Lord, our God.
Lord, Have Mercy; Christ Have Mercy on Me

One of my earliest collaborators in composing and in faith was in my youthful days of the Folk Mass at St. John Nepomucene in Bohemia, New York. The little chapel, the school and auditorium is where I began to learn theology, poetics and living out that faith. There are few men as adept at living in the world and practicing faith at the same time. Donald Desmond was a partner in bringing my classmates and my folk group into that world. When he was looking for a song to illustrate his Homily he would simply order me to write one! In the elements of The Mass, the Gospel is often sung. Father Desmond was blessed with Theatrical delivery, but a weak singing voice. He taught me to pray the gospels, integrating them into our thoughts and words. Like Igor Stravinsky, 'poetics' is like breathing. "It is what we do, and how we say it!" In my quiet time, I read out loud, and collaborate with those Gospels, and the written Homilies of my first mentor. As I read them out loud, I may not able to get his full Shakespearean delivery. "When we pray scripture," Desmond liked to say, "we ascend the Mountain of God. We pass from human terms and concepts into the sphere of God. We achieve a union with the divine that surpasses all understanding. This is why we must read the Gospels, daily. It transforms us into His mystics who experience the ecstasy of divine love. "

The reflection from my sleep is timeless.
The detection of my weakness, whispers to me.
I realize we are not as strong, yet we go and play along, the direction of my steps, are yours alone.
I sweep the icy path, so none my stumble. Before the sunrise melts the fallen snow. In my head I do the math, and fill the day with laughter, like the inside joke that you and I only know.
You give me words to write, you give me words to play and sing, you show me the way towards the breath in everything! Ans so I am here to give you praise, with my hands lifted I raise, like the children we have raised with open arms- Today.

Music By Richard Arnold Beattie
Somewhere between 1974 and 1978, I had the pleasure of working on the weekly Folk Mass at St. John Nepomucene, with Father Donald Desmond. In our discussions, Father Desmond would challenge me to compose a folk mass for the church. I started and stopped and kept it to myself, to tweak and get ready - for a grand occasion. Father Desmond has long passed. I have books filled with his Homilies, and reflections of the daily Gospels. So here are ten songs that I am adding to the Woodtracs of my song collection. The words are both traditional with some original pieces. All the music is original. Like Pete Seeger says- "Folk Music is like a wedding, something old; something new; something borrowed and something blue. " Here is the beginning of our collaboration. Richard Beattie

Dr. James Spencer reads , The Christmas Story just like the Christmas you used to know! And James as usual gives us the "Thinking Points," much like Mary contemplated what was about to become. There is a useful conversation between James and Richard Beattie on what we can do with the Joy of Christmas, which may be the best present under the tree. And as the great theologian, Winnie the Pooh said often, "The Best Time is Just Before!" Happy Christmas everyone.

From the archives of Sound Century there is a Christmas sound to KLZ-FM from 1968, when The Innovators, who brought Rock and Roll to the FM Dial, by the way of Gardner, Floyd and Cloney. We start out with Oddie Cloney and his Christmas Dedications which include the great sounds of the 1960's. But - wait-there's more! Each Folk Process program was processed for your protection! And as we end this year- we go into the original, the traditional and the spiritual. Danny O'Keefe talks about his influences and Paul Robeson sings "Going Home." And the trivia question, boys and girls is "Who coined the term medley?" The answer is the brother of Guy Lombardo, the lead singer and reed player of the Royal Canadians, who wrote so many great hits of the 20's, 30's and 40's, Carmen Lombardo. From the special New Years album, Hogmanay, a New Years Medley. That's coming up on Think Radio, the Home-Work and Community.

You asked and we listened. This week in putting together the best of Mind Matters and Counseled Culture, we are bringing our listeners a mosiac magazine of stories, interviews and public affairs programs on mental health. Sound Century is a Home-Work and Community Service, and when things happen at home, work or in community- we want to help. We were thinking-of you! So we brought our experts of counselors, clergy and community leaders to think-listen and speak. On Think Radio- we were tired of the old way of looking at media. And we kept hitting the "refresh button" in hopes of finding less talk and more thoughtful conversations. There are three areas where we need a refresher course- 1. At Home; 2. At Work and 3. In Community! And so, I asked three experts about what they would do if they had a media platform in audio learning- since most people that we reach are in their cars, on their way to work, on their way home from work, working out with earbuds; and are walking, hiking, or running through neighborhoods in their community! With the high percentage of people working from home these days, when you are at home- you may be already at work! The great Chicago architect Louis Sullivan wrote in "The Autobiography of an Idea," "God is in the Plans!" In 1972, a young Vietnam Veteran brought a briefcase full of resumes to downtown Denver. He wanders across 17th Street. Wall Street of the Rockies was full of promise and regret. As he crossed streets like Champa and Welton, Wazee and Larimer, something caught his ear. Hi everyone, I am pleased to bring you this useful conversation with Folk singer-songwriter Tom Chapin. The Chapin brothers were a good part of my upbringing in Long Island music. Tom has carried on the family tradition of passing on the music and writing his own soundtrack. The daughters of the Chapin Brothers are carrying it on to the next generation. As we continue to understand The Folk Process, we need to remember that it has a lot to do with unearthing the family songs that we have put in moth balls or buried alive with our ancestors.

God Speaks in many ways, and through every breath Creation! This week as God speaks, in our homes, through our work and in community- Lowell Busenitz and audio journalist, Richard Arnold Beattie, have a talk with author and pastor, John Van Slotten about the masterpiece- "God Speaks Science" As architect Louis Sullivan said in the "Auto-Biography of an idea"- "God is in the Plans", This book and discussion is proof that "God is the Plan!" And in our human-ness, life is so much better when we acknowledge that God directs our steps... Richard: Just a production note, "While most of our audio publications and programs are a half hour each, there were so many points of this program, that I did not split the content into two programs. While I say that we all need a Savior and an editor, (and this show was no exception), the rhthym of the discussion breathes to a calm and peaceful cadence that in this case, allows God to speak science in our ears."

A funny thing happened on the way to The Denver Folklore Center. I ran intpo my old friend Dick Weissman, who tells the tale of a place that I knew well- Greenwhich Village. It was a place at Bleeker Street at McDougal and if you go there now, you can find the remnants of the old Folklore Center, the one that inspired Harry Tuft to begin The Denver Folklore Center in 1962. It was a place that at that time was The Journeyman, Dave Van Ronk and Eric Anderson. Just Sixteen years later, I left the Village, when Punk and Disco converged in NY. And 16 years later in 1978, I followed the footsteps of Harry Tuft to Denver and it led me to 17th and Pearl. Theres a cut from a concert with Taj Mahal, a 1962 interview with Bob Gibson, and there is a continuing of the creative process in the Folk Process in this offering of Folk Process on Legends! This is a special report from Mind Matters and A Counseled Culture with LPC Rita Schulte and me journalist, Richard Arnold Beattie. This program comes with a warning. The truth of the discriptions of transitioning and de-transitioning; the physical and mental risks from the words of Chloe Cole are uncomfortably disturbing and refreshingly honest. As a counselor Rita Schulte asks the right questions and as a journalist I remained objective and listened to Ms. Cole, as she describes a loss of her childhood, and how through that, found forgiveness, and a cause that puts her in-between being "cancelled" and counseled. It is a good place for Ms. Cole who is a calm passionate voice for truth, experience and maturity. As the Senator says at thh end of her testimony, "You are a brave and beautiful woman."

Dr. James Spencer and Richard Beattie are thinking about politics and how we as Christians might approach a culture at war, when we shouldn't be! How do you please everyone? You can't! Can you be all things to all people? No! As we answer a letter to the Corinthians - then we may understand that "we can be the one thing-that all people need."

“I have sung to many audiences. I have sung in hobo jungles and I’ve sung for the Rockefellers. I’ve never refused to sing for anybody. That’s the only answer I can give. I’m proud I’ve sung for Americans of every political persuasion.” Pete Seeger. This week on Folk Process, host and singer-songwriter, Richard Beattie delves into the digital collection at Sound Century and plays excerpts from a concert that Pete Seeger did at Dartmouth in February 1957. What Seeger had to say about the Folk Process and "the thing that we make it," is rudimentary to sharing music. "Folk Music builds people up. It is accesible, honest and it is the epitome of both creative and critical thinking. As a minister, a leader and a communicator, original music is what scatters seeds to produce good fruit at home, through work and in community." Richard Beattie, Founder of Sound Century. On Legends953.com, I brought out excerpts from this concert as well as songs that are on the Legends playlist that were eithe "made up" by Pete Seeger or brought to light. We are a digital extention of what the Seeger family shares through their collection and through my friend and mentor Harry Tuft's archives. "These songs are my songs, these songs are your songs."

Soul Work is the latest podcast from Sound Century Audio Network, based on the the book by Lowell Busenitz. In this first episode, Lowell Busenitz and co-host Richard Beattie delve into the idea of finding God at work! The introduction brings us to conversations and statements that lead the listener down a narrow path and a quintessential journey beyond the 8 hour workday. And then, on the seventh day, or the second part of our initial broadcast, Marianne Howard, pays a visit to discuss "Rest: Overcoming Spiritual Fatique." That's coming up on "Soul Work- Finding God at Work!"

Rita: Chole you have an incredible story. When Chloe was 12 years old, she decided she was transgender. At 13, she came out to her parents. That same year, she was put on puberty blockers and prescribed testosterone. At 15, she underwent a double mastectomy. Less than a year later, she realized she’d made a mistake — all by the time she was 16 years old.
Richard: This week on Mind Matters – Counseled Culture, Licensed Counselor and Author Rita Schulte and me Richard Beattie talk to Chloe Cole about the long-term affects of what it means to be Trans before you are equipped to make that decision.
Richard: There are a lot of stories out there that come to a convenient one size fits all mentality. From both sides of any issue the pressure to be who you feel like at any given age or time is met with enthusiastic acceptance and encouragement. Even when that individual is a child. In a culture that is at war with each other, over politics, religion, education and public policy, what are the long-term outcomes and when does the value of humanity get marginalized as a commodity based on who we are who we become?

What if artificial intelligence (AI) is allowing us to reward our own bad behavior? At what point is the need for the sort of efficiency AI promises to provide driven by our skewed priorities, broken systems, and unwillingness to address our problems through non-technological means? I don’t doubt that AI will help humans move beyond where we could go individually or together in certain arenas. Like other technological platforms, AI will have benefits. As we look at the various ways AI models are being used, we need to consider in a robust fashion who is benefiting from these new technologies and, perhaps more importantly, how they are benefiting.
For instance, Rand found that “more teachers than other working adults reported burnout, and about half as many teachers reported feeling resilient to stressful events compared with other working adults.” A CBC News story reinforces the issue of teacher burnout by describing the challenges of Jessica Reid who “until recently…was overwhelmed by her workload as an elementary school teacher…while also raising three young kids of her own.” The piece highlights the growing use of AI, particularly platforms like Eduaide and ChatGPT, to lighten the administrative roles of teachers and provide tools to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Eduaide is framed as a “tool to help eliminate teacher burnout and make high-quality teaching resources universally accessible.” AI to the rescue. Or maybe not.
While “teacher burnout” is often cited as the problem, author Alexandra Robbins suggests, “I believe ‘teacher burnout’ is a myth—and the term should be ditched.” She goes on to conclude, “Instead of asking teachers to do the impossible and calling them ‘burned out’ when they can’t, school leaders should fix the underlying causes—school climate, staffing numbers, and resources—not just to prevent employee demoralization, but because that’s how a proper workplace should operate.” While the efficiency offered by platforms like Eduaide may allow teachers to manage unrealistic loads, they also allow school systems to move forward without making any of the reforms Robbins suggests. If teacher burnout is a symptom of organizational dysfunction, it is possible that the system will simply recalibrate to “take back” the efficiencies AI is providing teachers. Worse, the school systems may decide that the best way to handle “school climate, staffing numbers, and resources” is to further leverage technology by employing fewer and fewer of those pesky human teachers.

We simply have been listening to his finger - picking- good chops, songwriting and a great French dialect. This may have been from the early 1970's or perhaps the 1960's. John Van Sloten is the most thoughtful interview that I have ever conducted. With his masterpiece book, "God Speaks Science", we had the sense that we are invited into a creative arts and science gallery and lab, that is created and recreated on a daily basis. Through Astronomy and the light in the Dark Skies, we see His Handiwork. In Biology we see the microcasm and the macroscopic, God sized vision of heaven and earth. From psychology to philosophy, at home through work and in community, we can name each discipline and integrate the creative arts with the Creator and find joy in that journey. This broadcast is an eight minute preview that is an overview that will have you listening deeply to truth about Creation, the creative process and the scientific method of our purpose, our soul work in this world and the next.

One of the many interviews from the Harry Tuft Collection , digitized by Sound Century and Audio Park Studio is an old KFML interview of singer-songwriter Bob Gibson. Samuel Robert ("Bob") Gibson was a folk singer who led a folk music revival in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was known for playing both the banjo and the 12-string guitar. He introduced a then largely unknown Joan Baez at the Newport Folk Festival of 1959. "In the early days of Swallow Hill Music Association," Gibson came to Denver, where I took him around town. He stayed at The Colburn Hotel in Capitol Hill. This was in 1979. Gibson played a Friday and Saturday night show at 17th and Pearl. He reveled us with stories and songs. This interview was about ten years prior.

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. John 12:23-26
I must confess that I was multitasking when I first heard this verse this morning. But then I sat up and listened closely. “Whoever loves his life loses it. Whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”
In other words- “Learning to defy the world and follow Christ.”
What are we “defying?” The World. What are we really rejecting? The sin of the world. We are following Christ, “Jesus who takes away the sin of the world.” What do we replace our sinful lifestyles with? Service! We must lose our egos, we must lose what we have made of our possessions, professions, and progressions, and nail them to the cross. “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin from this world,” take my sin away from me. Have mercy on us.” (Sanctus)
Christian Resistance: Learning to Defy the Sin of the World, to Becoming the Servant of All.
Charles Powell, the man who is called to rescue people from slavery and human trafficking told James Spencer and me recently, “if you think calling is comfortable, you don’t know what calling really is.” For me as a journalist, a singer-songwriter, and producer, I’ve had to lay down the sins of “the way we make it,” and burn the weeds of destructive behavior, in order to serve God and people with the uncompromising orchards of fruit in words, music and worship. It isn’t comfortable. It is painful pruning the works that have been financially and professionally rewarding. It is costly and uncomfortable to vacate my worldly sinful words, and to erase my own brand of “the yeast of the Pharisees,” on social media, and other places on the internet- to serve God and people.
My friend and media colleague, Dr. James Spencer writes, “Our individual Christian practice may, and perhaps in many cases should, oppose institutions that ‘act back’ on us as individual image-bearers and as members of the unified body of Christ.” I am aware now that I have been sucked into a cosmic undertow, at home through work and in community, to conform to the world rather than the image of Christ. Each day, I have had to purposely, “renew my mind,” and present my life as a living sacrifice. “Renew my work, as an act of worship,” and to “renew my love” of God and people, in serving God and people, in my thoughts and in my words and what I am called to do.

You look in the break room, not there. You look in the conference room, but there’s someone else using it. You drop by a colleague’s office, and you look in social media- everyone is busy. Stop. Rewind, and restart your day. The alarm goes off. You make it to the bathroom, you go to the kitchen, you make coffee and you watch the morning news or you even read the Wall Street Journal. You get your keys, you check the weather, you get the umbrella, and you pack a lunch. You start the car, you drive to work, and you look around… You say “Good morning!” to Jason at the front desk, you get in the elevator and press the 12th Floor. The door opens. On Mountain Time Radio Hour, I begin the show on a story about homelessness in Denver and the Front Range and the newly elected Mayor Michael Johnston's campaign promise to end homelessness in Denver by 2027. David Droll who for almost 15 years and over 700 Saturday's has reached out to the homeless in Houston with hot meals and hygiene kits and a mentoring touch.
In between painting the scenes that will be caught in a spoke of the news cycle, is a galvanizing original song by Richard Beattie. This week is The Dreamers. The idea that some men see the way things are and ask "Why!" Yet the Dreamers, see things the way they never were and ask "Why Not?"
An interlude from scene to song, from song to story of character study, on Mountain Time Radio Hour with author and journalist, Jonathan Eig on his book, King-A Life, on Dr. Martin Luther King, can be judged by "the content of character," and not by color, religion, or orientation of the condition of being human. Wheat; Weeds and Works
This week on Useful to God, Dr. James Spencer and I will be looking at the Parable of the Weeds, and our text will be from Mathew’s Gospel, Chapter 13 verse 24 through 30. James, there are a couple of reasons why Jesus used the literature device of Parables. The obvious was a fulfillment of Scripture. Yet the other reason was this stage of his ministry, and the teachers of religious law were trying to discredit Jesus maintaining that he was healing and performing miracles from a demonic state. Here we are painting the scene.

A free guide and audio piece on AI:
https://moodycenter.org/christiansandai-2/
We continue to interact within a digital environment that has contributed to the world’s proficiency at telling stories that deny God. Recent Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) developments make technological “advances” seem inevitable. Perhaps they are. As such, Christians should be aware of technologies such as A.I. and be informed before adopting A.I. models, the metaverse, social media, and other digital technologies.
This guide is intended to provide some basic information about A.I., as well as some frameworks to assist you in thinking about technology and A.I. It begins with a brief discussion of Christian resistance, which is necessary as we refuse to be formed into the image of anything other than Christ.

For every season, for every reason, God placed a star in the sky; not everyone sees, there are lost at sea, who have paid the cost, let us be their guide.
Northstar in the sky; Northstar be our guide
Northstar follow the star, from right where you are
Guide us Home.
God so loved us all-that He gave His only son
Wise men follow the star, yet they're not the only ones!
Bridge: Guide us home to a safe place, here on earth,
in the woods. We'll be safe, if we seek his face,
to the North- it's for our own good; it's for the common good;
for the greater good; for he is good, so good -so good!
So if your lost and alone; follow the star, you'll find your way home.
Jesus is there, he's there waiting there of you
and the Northstar is always in view!

What does it mean to be useful to God? Dr. James Spencer and co-host/producer Richard Beattie, discuss D. L. Moody’s concept of usefulness and its relevance for the church today. . Note some relevant quotes/sections from Dwight Moody’s writing, as well as the handbook of the Northfield Seminary and Mt. Hermon School in Northfield, MA
“If I know my own heart today, I would rather die than live as I once did, a mere nominal Christian, and not used by God in building up his kingdom. It seems a poor empty life to live for the sake of self. Let us seek to be useful. Let us seek to be vessels meet for the Master’s use, that God, the Holy Spirit, may shine fully through us.” – D. L. Moody
“When we know our Bible, then it is that God can use us.” – D. L. Moody
“During the years that I have been privileged to labor for God…I have strongly and increasingly felt that the task of arousing Christians to a deeper sense of their responsibility is even a more important task than that of the simple evangelist.” – D. L. Moody
“The motive presented for the pursuit of an education is the power it confers for Christian life and usefulness, not the means it affords to social distinction, or to the gratification of selfish ambition.” – Hand-book of the Northfield Seminary and Mt. Hermon School
“His [Moody’s] attention was called to the opportunity presented. Of reaching the young people of the place, imbuing them with an enthusiasm for Bible study, and waking them up to lives of Christian usefulness.” – Hand-book of the Northfield Seminary and Mt. Hermon School

On the bus this morning, I look at people's faces, who stare into a vacum onto the empty spaces, they seem lost.
I know that restless feeling, I've seen it in my life, the grim look of reality, meets the coldness of daily strife.
It's keep up with Dow Jones- stock market and cars, leads to big money loans and descends down to belly up to the bar.
Then we lose the ones we love, trapped by our own greed, our wants become much greater, than the thins we really need - yes they do!
On the bus this morning, I look at people's faces, who stare into a vacum onto the empty spaces, they seem lost.
