It’s been a year since we launched Weekends With Jan. For the past year, I spent Sundays with you guys talking to some of the most amazing Filipino freelancers in an effort to inspire you with their stories so that you can have the courage and confidence in your freelance journey as well.

That is why for our anniversary special, I picked 2 outstanding guests from our previous episodes to join us to celebrate this milestone.

Joining us in this episode to give you even more inspiring stories including the behind the scenes of their wins are coach Rommel Isla and Gerson Lacdao.

Jump right in as I, Rommel, and Gerson talk about our 2022 experience as freelancers and what we look forward to the most this 2023.

Rommel Isla is an experienced NLP practitioner, Sales closer, and hypnotherapist. He is driven by curiosity and fascination. He takes pride in providing the best sales closing for independent professionals. As a sales trainer, his goals include allowing independent professionals to charge for the value they provide and helping them improve their internal and external way of communicating with others and with themselves.

Gerson Lacdao is a WordPress frontend developer and web accessibility advocate. He works with non-profits and other digital agencies in creating inclusive websites that are compliant with relevant legislations worldwide. In his free time, he teaches WordPress, web accessibility, and best practices in web development.

In this anniversary special episode, we talk about how our 2022 went as freelancers including both our mistakes and biggest takeaways. We’ll also give you hints on what to look forward to from us this year.

“The credibility of the Filipinos is what I really want to highlight in this show… It’s more for them [the listeners] to deeply understand that us, as service providers, are not just after money or clients. We have deep reasons why we do what we do.” – Jan Briones

What is that one big goal that you’ve always wanted to achieve?

Is it being able to live as free as you’d like to be? Is it about becoming stable financially? Is it to become genuinely happy?

Whatever that is, as our guest today says – when you decide, you should do your best to make it happen.

Yes, it won’t be easy, but your life won’t change for the better if you’re going to just sit there and watch your life fall flat.

She did it at 19, and so can you. Tune in as we learn how big of a game changer clarity and effort are in today’s episode!

Mechelle Carpio is a former call center agent who's now a Shopify Conversion Specialist helping e-Commerce businesses in the US, Australia, UK & in the Philippines. She has the vision to help 1000 Shopify store owners by 2030 by building conversion-focused websites.

Mechelle is also the founder of Fearless Orange – a one-stop agency for all your e-commerce marketing needs. She has already helped 100+ Shopify store owners in the past 2 years with the help of her team.

In this episode, Mechelle shares how self-motivation, clarity, and discipline helped her become a successful shopify conversion specialist at such a very young age of 22.

“It’s very important na if you’re going through something, na parang gusto mo nang mag-give up, you need to step back and you have to think. Kasi kung lagi kang nara-rattle, doon ka magpapanic and then you’re going to decide na hindi mo naman talaga gusto, drastic decisions.” – Mechelle Carpio

“Self-motivation is like a superpower. If you know how to motivate yourself, then I think you will be good.” – Mechelle Carpio

“You should have short-term goals and long-term goals, but you should work on your short-term goals first. Take it step-by-step and do not pressure yourself sa mga gusto mong gawin or dapat mong gawin sa buhay.” – Mechelle Carpio

Are you a freelancer who plans to scale and start your own company soon?

Do you think you are ready to take the leap, and become the leader of your very own organization?

Majority of freelancers dream of eventually running their own companies where they can use their skills and experience to increase their cash flow. But let’s be honest, many of us – myself included – were/are not really aware of what we might face along the way. That’s where the importance of making crucial decisions and surrounding yourself with the right people who can support you comes into the picture.

Luckily for us, our guest for today’s episode is someone who has seen it all. Join us today as Marge Aviso talks to us about her journey as an employee, a freelancer, and the CEO and co-founder of her own company.

Marge is the CEO and co-founder of Telework PH, an outsourcing company based in Bulacan that specializes in customer service, technical support, and data analytics. She is a Lean Six Sigma green belt, a resource trainer for the Department of Information and Communications Technology, and a registered nurse by profession.

In this episode, Marge recalls her story of being a registered nurse, shifting her career path to BPO, freelancing, and eventually starting her very own BPO company. She shares the challenges that she and her company faced along the way and how, with the support of the right people and the guidance of the Lord, they were able to overcome it all.

“Sometimes, dahil hindi natin nakikita ahead what could happen, we’re so confident that we can get things done. We don’t see the risks right away because of inexperience… So, talking to someone who has experience will give you exposure sa mga possibilities. You really have to weigh the risks and the benefits.” – Marge Aviso

What you’ll learn from this episode:

  • Get an idea about some of the common struggles and challenges that BPO companies face in their early stages;
  • Understand the importance of surrounding yourself with people who are better than you when you are in the stage of starting up; and
  • Be inspired by the success story of Telework PH, a company that almost got bankrupt by the pandemic but now has over 1000 full-time employees

Topics Covered:

04:15 – Marge recalls her childhood days: Her personal and family-related challenges, and the journey from “I don’t want to be an entrepreneur” to becoming the CEO of her own BPO company

13:35 – Not fit to be an employee: Marge’s journey from Nursing to BPO all the way to getting her first clients as a freelancer

20:41 – The Great Leap: Marge shares the entire process that led up to the foundation of her own BPO company, Telework PH

29:28 – Telework PH: The story behind the company name, how they started, and the field they specialize in at the present

35:00 – Leadership issues, near-bankruptcy, legal battles, and the pandemic: the biggest challenges that Telework PH had to overcome – and how they were able to deal with it

46:11 – The rainbow after the storm: Telework PH’s post-crisis story

51:51 – Preparation, asking the right questions, and hiring someone better than you: Marge’s tips for those who are planning to launch their own formal office setup

58:13 – Telework PH is hiring! Connect with them through facebook.com/teleworkphcareers/

Key Takeaways:

“I think every entrepreneur should see their business almost die and then come back to life. It is a completely different, life-changing experience.” – Marge Aviso

“When it comes to managing people, we really have to make decisions… Even if kapamilya mo, if it’s going to hurt the business in the long run, wala dapat family, family.” – Marge Aviso

“When it comes to growth, kailangan talaga na mayroon kang cash runway. Kapag wala, maba-bankrupt ka” – Marge Aviso

A lucky few find their 'the one' the first time around. For those of us who don't, it's not the end of the world. It takes hard work and, yes, timing. Things fall into place largely because of it. Additionally, it comes down to knowing within yourself which market needs your help and where you can best help them. We want to help them reach their goals by being effective at what we do. How do you unlock that opportunity to find your dream clients as a freelancer? Dominic Barrios is one of the coaches in the Freelance Movement Tribe, who assists aspiring freelancers in finding premium clients online. He also recently founded Automation Marketing Ph, a Filipino chatbot community. Part of the company's mission is for freelancers in the Philippines to be able to offer chatbot automation services and learn how to price them appropriately. In this way, businesses can provide better customer service to their customers. In addition, he is also the CEO of the company's chatbot agency, Bots at Work. Their team has helped Automotive Group brands get more qualified leads through sales and marketing automation. This is impressive because some of the companies that he worked with include: Ayala Motors, KiaPhilippines, Volkswagen Philippines, Max's Philippines, Honda Motors Philippines, KTM Philippines, and a lot more. His biggest inspiration comes from his lovely wife and four daughters.  Dominic shares his freelancing journey with us in this episode. It wasn't easy for him to get started even though he was a licensed engineer. Despite his dream job of working for a telecom company, he didn't get it right away. Along the way, he was sidetracked into many jobs, some of which paid well, and others paid him a lifetime of lessons and skills.  His big break finally came when he clinched big names and brands in the automotive industry through his bot marketing. How did he do it? Let's discover what bigger opportunities opened up for him through consistent value posting and networking. What you will learn from this episode: Learn how valuable value posting and networking is and how it can make a difference in your freelancing journey. Discover how to find clarity and the market where you're called to help and serve. Find out how to show up even while facing your personal crisis.

“May pera ba talaga sa freelancing?” Most – if not all – freelancers have a story behind this question. Among all things in freelancing, this happens to be the one people are most curious about. It’s either we’re the ones being asked or we’re the ones looking for answers back when we haven’t started yet. And today, we’ll answer this query as we learn from this episode’s guest. That question was the same question he got from his parents years back, aside from the usual ‘is that legal’. Back then, they were really against his idea of doing online work, with all the no’s coming from a place of care and love. But he knew that he’ll make it; he believed that he can. And now, he’s among the big names, especially in terms of copywriting. So if you want to know how he made it happen, make sure that you tune in. Because today, we’ll be talking with the one and only Miguel Campaner. Miguel is a Filipino direct-response copywriter with over 110 million pesos in results. His mission is to help aspiring copywriters, business owners, and serial entrepreneurs sell their products and services through direct response copywriting, offer positioning, and neuroscience marketing. His vision is to help 100,000 entrepreneurs experience financial freedom by the end of 2030 by helping them build a lifestyle business that does not require them to chase prospects or sacrifice time with family. He has worked with some of the industry giants like: ·        Bo Sanchez of The Truly Rich Club  ·        J3 Patino of Pinoy Money Academy ·        Lish Aquino of Amazon Nation PH ·        John Pagulayan of The Freelance Movement  ·        Allan Ngo of Digital Solopreneur ·        Webinar Jam and ·        Kartra among others  Miguel is the Founder and the CEO of Copywriting Training Camp PH, where he helps Filipinos master the basics, fundamentals, and advanced concepts of direct response copywriting. In this episode, Miguel narrates his freelancing journey, starting from his love for English to then becoming a big name in the copywriting industry, that despite all the doubts and trials, he’s found a way to scale and be of help to those who want to do the same. “The biggest lesson siguro there is to risk. You have to jump. Why lock our value as human beings with how much work we are able to do if we can be intentional in our day-to-day life, living it in bliss with a clear why? There’s this joke that goes around for who knows how long already and it says, “If you want to be happy, you can only choose two out of these three – sleep, social life, and good grades.” Most people have really chosen two, and depending on how they live life, at some point, yes, they’re got it. But what if there’s a way to achieve real bliss without having to let go of one of the three? What if you can get enough sleep, have an active social life, and still get the achievements you’re aiming for in life? That’s exactly what Celina Bianca Alejandro will share with us today as she narrates how she got to where she’s at now by understanding what she values and knowing where she wants to be at. All we know about him now is that he's 'The Legend.' People, especially those he had helped launch their respective freelancing careers, look up to him with much respect and admiration. He is the founder of the Freelance Movement, an email copywriter who writes emails for a living, for business, here and abroad. His client roster includes digital marketing giants like Ryan Leaveck, Todd Brown, and one of the world's largest publishing companies. Mag-save ka ng pang-emergency mo. Kapag hindi mo ginawa ‘yon, parang bingi ka ro’n eh. Lagi kong naririnig ‘yon; hindi laging pasko. Stepping into unknown territory is scary. Much like building an online business, it takes a lot of courage to step out there and craft another path to success. For many of us, our corporate jobs have given us that financial comfort zone, and venturing into a never-before-tried avenue would mean thinking about it real hard.  There are reasons to be scared -- a family to feed included; what happens when things don't turn out the way we want them? What about others' expectations of us? The last thing we want is to fail when that is the only thing we pinned our hope on. These thoughts are valid and worth looking into. If you are one of those contemplating exploring freelancing and making a hit in your chosen niche, join in and listen to this episode.  Mark Bartel works with real estate agents, coaches, advisors, and other small businesses. He helps them cut the sales cycle in half by building customized AI tools for their social media accounts. This creates a unique user experience, reduces redundant human interaction, and increases the sales pipeline by eliminating inquiry backlog on social media at scale. He attended Duke University on scholarship for a Masters in Engineering. He then spent years working at a world-leading technology advisory firm, giving product and strategy recommendations to Fortune 20 companies. As the pandemic arrived, lingered, and wore on, he watched many of his mentors and friends with small businesses suffer, and he decided he wanted to do what he could to help them.  On the side, he has a scuba license and work experience as an Advanced-level EMT in emergency medicine.  In this episode, Mark shares what you've got to have to be in a long game of freelancing and online business. He reminds everyone how important it is to develop that muscle of discipline, the only thing that will keep you moving at times when you don't feel motivated and inspired. And also the need to connect and network with like-minded people who understand what struggles you go through and are willing to help you succeed as much as they do.  "Motivation and inspiration will only get you so far. And if not managed well, that would lead to depression and anxiety; and a lot more mental health issues that go with it. That's why it's crucial that our mental wellbeing has to be taken care of. For most of us, we are inclined towards living a fast-paced life. In a way, we are conditioned to dream big, want the best that life could offer, build businesses, earn big and live a long-cherished life. Nothing wrong with that. We all have our aspirations to fulfill and goals to attain. And we all have a lifestyle we want to maintain. That's what drives us to hope, live, and do better each day. But life's meaning and one's worth are not measured by one's millions in bank accounts. When we fully know what's enough for us, that means contentment and happiness. In this episode, Kit Rodriguez shares how he lessens his cost of living and maximizes his joy for life. He came from working in the corporate, earning big, owning businesses, and finally settling into a normal and ordinary lifestyle. What could have triggered that decision to live less and still be happy? What you will learn from this episode: Learn how to be happy with less Understand the 'Theology of Enough' and how it can help you find meaning in living a simple life Find extraordinary lessons and learnings in the lives of ordinary people

"A truly successful life is not marked with excess or privilege. "For the last seven years of our lives, we already have a glimpse of retirement. Normally, when do people engage in spiritual realms of things or give back to the community, normally during retirement? What helped us pursue the things that we want and learn the things that we really want to learn is by engineering our lives in such a way that it's so cheap. And we have made a business out of it." - Kit Rodriguez

"Making more money doesn't make the feeling of emptiness go away. You have to learn how to pause you, need to have me-time, and do self-care. And there's this lesson that Jesus took his time to withdraw from the crowd to go to the mountains alone. I realized, maybe I lost my balance because I have been doing all of this hustle and grind without really considering Jesus has done his thing. I mean, I'm sure Jesus is no lazy guy. He knows when to say timeout; I'll enjoy myself." - Kit Rodriguez

"If you don't have the 'concept of enough', you wouldn't know when to stop. You wouldn't know when to really say yes, I'm happy I reached my goal." - Kit Rodriguez

"We have different concepts of enough, but I think the critical role here is to really take time to pause and consider what is enough, and so when you consider what enough is and you have embraced it, everything else is a bonus. The stock market might crash, that's okay because what I placed there is just a bonus." - Kit Rodriguez

"The idea is we have a cheap lifestyle. So, it's easier to achieve that word 'enough' when you have that. That's a...

Lucky for those who hit the jackpot the first time they try. But that seems to be daunting for those of us who have to go through all the struggles and hardships just to make things work out. Maybe you're at a crossroads in your life right now, confused as to which path gives you the fulfillment and, more so, the alignment that you want to happen.  You might be considering options that promise a better future, but they seem to be unfamiliar territory; you're just too scared to fail. Or you're just not willing to leave behind what has been going steady for so long and the security that goes with it. You have the choice of getting stuck in the circumstances you have now or getting a go now at what could be an enormous opportunity ahead. Ulrike Bondoc, also known as Nikki B, is a graduate with a bachelor's degree in Nursing but never practiced her profession. For 8 years, she worked in the IT-BPO industry and as an ESL tutor to Japanese students. In 2018, she took the leap of faith and entered the freelancing industry. Now, she is an Amazon virtual assistant, a copywriter, and a Youtube content creator who started her channel, Nikki B Vlogs, in January 2020 not only to document her journey but also to inspire people that it's never too late to start something new, to take action despite fear, to leave behind everything you've built to pursue a totally different path that lights your soul on fire. In this episode, Ulrike shares how you can find success apart from what you initially pursued at the start. It's when you learn to leave the familiar and stretch out yourself to face something new and challenging; that's when real growth happens.  For her, it was never easy, but she believes that when you invest in yourself and become a massive action-taker, you prepare yourself for the inevitable success ahead.  She shares the many rejections before finally gaining what she deserves the most. And there's so much takeaway from this. Success is never far behind when you keep at it, consistently working to make yourself better, and you use failures as motivation to improve and develop yourself. Turn rejections into opportunities for growth. And if you think you're too late to make it big, think again and listen to what she shares in this episode, as Ulrike proves it otherwise. What you’ll learn from this episode: Find out how you can change paths, shift from what you set out to do at the start, and still become successful in the end Learn how you can be ‘rejection-proof’ and turn those rejections into an opportunity magnet Discover ways on how you can earn not just one or two but multiple incomes and do it with ease

How much of our true desires and beliefs are we willing to give up to fit the perfect mold of who we are "supposed" to be?

Ron del Val is a launch strategist and email copywriter for online business coaches, helping them launch their program, get more clients and create the impact they want. He also leads and hosts the Tribe Tambayan for The Freelance Movement Community.

The lessons in freelancing are the same lessons you can apply in life. We are capable of manifesting our desires so we can achieve what we want in a relationship, career, or life in general. We are not born with confidence but we can develop it through the slow process of overcoming fear. It is the lack of confidence (not skills) that stops freelancers from getting clients and how the https://www.facebook.com/groups/onlinebusinessmanagerph (Online Business Management PH) course can help them build their confidence. There is a spark of creativity amidst our failures and low moments; unless you ignore that “light-bulb moment”, something amazing is going to come out of it. It’s a matter of choosing what you want to see.

Sustaining a business is never a walk in the park, far from it. At times, the energy falls so low that you need refueling, and your momentum is in question. Don't be fooled with the glitz and glamour posted on social media – all those celebrations of wins and accolades; they don't speak of the real story deep down. Because somewhere in between them, something is not being told. Talk about vulnerabilities, mistakes, failures, and stupidity – all these lie at the start and at some points at the peak of success. For some reason or another, these are not being shared. But have you ever wondered how these successful people ever get to where they are now? Was everything smooth sailing? Was there even a magic formula that just catapulted them to the top? Allan Ngo is the Email Copywriting Mentor, Marketing Automation Strategist, and Digital Marketing Consultant.

Errol Tiozon is a co-founder at Conversion Designers Philippines.

John Pagulayan is a seasoned digital copywriter and business consultant, thus earning him the moniker, The Legend.

Nix Eniego is an AVP Marketing at PDAX [Philippine Digital Asset Exchange] and a co-founder of Social Media Academy.

Sergio Benoya is a Facebook Ads & Lead Generation Strategist for Mortgage Brokers

In this episode, five of the Philippines ' top coaches and experts in their respective fields and niches got together to share what exactly happens behind the scenes as they try to manage their own insecurities, failures, mistakes, and fears. But this time around, by their own admittance, we will be dispelling the myths, so-to speak, behind their success.

What you will learn from this episode:

Find out about these top coaches' vulnerabilities and how they turn them into strengths and opportunities Learn how to become proactive instead of being reactive regardless of how challenging things may seem to be Discover the right mindset to stay on your tracks and keep going no matter what the circumstances are

But when you do it more, you become less afraid. And the less afraid you become, the more confident you become, as well.  06:02 - Sergio's mantra: If you start from the bottom, the only way to go is up. 07:38 - John's personal belief when things are challenging: Regardless of the challenge or how hard it is, the solution isn't to turn back; you just have to step back. 08:59 - Nix's comforting words: You don't lose until you decide to quit. 11:27 - It's okay to be seen as 'stupid': If I see someone and he's not afraid to be stupid, I can almost guarantee he'd be successful one day  12:27 - Everyone sucks at one point in time: It's just going to be a cycle. As freelancers who sell their services to clients, we know that putting ourselves out there and creating conversations with prospects is a crucial step to closing deals. But we often fail to take the conversation from rapport-building to closing the sale. Are you still going in circles trying to introduce your offer? Do you find yourself falling into the trap of endless rapport building? Or worse, getting sold instead of closing a deal? Do you feel desperate to get clients and end up with low-balling clients? Are you guilty of Rambo, Bahala Na Gang, or Sneaky attack sales techniques? Niel Reichl is the founder of BottBott, a Facebook Messenger Marketing Agency to high ticket entrepreneurs and different businesses in the Philippines and all over the world. Before he “stumbled upon” chatbots, Coach Niel tried all sorts of freelancing jobs, sold different products including dating tips on a podcast, and even wrote ads for a dollar. Fast forward today, he has helped businesses by bringing in highly-qualified leads and increasing sales exponentially through their signature performance marketing strategies.

The other side of Niel Reichl is a coach to freelancers and a contributing writer for Esquire Magazine, Ph.

Listen to this episode as Coach Niel changes your perspective about Sales and shows the exact steps from finding a reason to genuinely connect, showcasing the value in the offer, and getting a prospect to say yes, doing all these in a smooth, cohesive manner.

Discover why selling through chat can be an effective channel to sell ideas, products and services if done with the right strategy.
