In todays episode, Im talking about brain research & dyslexia in the EFL context.
There are so many myths and misconceptions that I`ve decided to shed some light on and dismantle some of them.
✔️Learning a language is a complex task; learning to read in L1 or L2 is challenging for our brains, so let me take you through some fundamentals:
✳️The temporal lobe is responsible for phonological awareness and decoding/discriminating sounds.
✳️The frontal lobe handles speech production, reading fluency, grammatical usage, and comprehension, making it possible to understand simple and complex grammar
.✳️The angular and supramarginal gyrus serve as a "reading integrator" a conductor of sorts, linking the different parts of the brain together to execute the reading action.
❌ Working on L2 is so much more than mind maps & memorization. You`ve got to go to print and speech principles so that your students are successful in the future.

Bilingualism is the ability to speak two languages. It may be acquired early by children in regions where most adults speak two languages or when a child is raised with parents or parents who use their L1 at home.
✅Research findings prove that people with dyslexia who are bilingual outperform their monolingual peers. However, they experience difficulties in their schooling.
✅Bilingual dyslexic students can experience different severities depending on the language systems. A child whose first language is Italian will have mild deficits with their L1, whereas they will struggle with English or French because those languages are more phonetically complex.
If you are a parent or an educator, please bear it in mind: Dyslexic Bilingual students should be taught to read and write in their L1 because this will give them strong foundations in L2, and yes, they can be successful and bi-literate !

Dyslexia is a condition in which a learner or child has a neurological disorder resulting in difficulties listening, reading, or communicating content properly. Dyslexia affects everyone differently.
✅It causes reading, spelling, and writing difficulties but can also affect memory and organizational skills, which are necessary for learning a language.
✅Proficient reading affects a learner's entire education. While some educators feel well-prepared to perform such an important task, some wish there were better equipped and supported to affect a child's life, particularly those with Dyslexia.
✅ELT education is full of myths and ideas that have never been tested.

❕ When we try to examine it we see many words with different spellings, like these:

📢 Structured word inquiry digs deep into the language: it examines how word parts, structure, origin, and history over time tell the story of what words mean, how they're connected, and how they're written.
❕ A simple example is the root bher- to bear, and now we have a burden; in OE it was byrðen* :-).
❕ Language makes sense; when we treat it like science, we are empowered and make connections, and all of a sudden, we break through that plateau that was holding us back❕
