This is Soccer Pints, the podcast that discusses all things American soccer over a nice pint of beer. With Will Clark as your host, each week he will cover a variety of topics, including the US Soccer National Teams, Americans Abroad, Major League Soccer, NWSL and many other exciting soccer-related material.
Today, I am on my own but there are still several topics to get into, including some major soccer news that broke earlier this morning. We will get into what that news means for US Soccer, we will then get back into some more transfer news for our players, and I will wrap today up with my first prediction of the year at what our World Cup roster will look like in 2026.

Last time out, we got into our annual Camp Cupcake roster and highlighted a couple of individuals who could have potential to make an impact in future USMNT camps. We kept it super high level and didn’t make any predictions or analyze anything as they prepared for their first friendly of 2024 against Slovenia that took place over the weekend.
But today, I am going to be joined once again by my good friend and host of the Pint House Soccer Stars podcast, Mr. Chris Piel, and we are truly just going to bounce around with a few topics across US Soccer. We will touch base on how this Camp Cupcake finished up, we will chat through some more transfer news as we only have about 10 days left for guys to make a move, and then we will give a couple of thoughts into other news across the American soccer landscape.

Today, we will get into this Camp Cupcake roster that was released last Friday that includes 25 players, including 15 who received their first ever call up into a senior camp. The plan for today isn’t to just go through player by player but more or less to highlight a few players who could have potential to make an impact with the senior team sooner rather than later. We will go through the squad as they prepare to face off against Slovenia next Saturday, January 20th at 3pm ET down in San Antonio. We will then finish off today’s episode with a question or two and then wrap up as we always do with a final thought of the week.

Well, it’s a brand-new year, this is our first episode of 2024. And with that comes big things, big resolutions, big events happening, and overall, just a feeling of promise within American soccer.
We ended the year with a bit of what we called controlled chaos as I was joined by two guests in Soccer Pints designer and contributor, Eric Paullin, and Charlotte FC’s assistant coach, Brian Edwards.
Today is a big day though, depending on how you look at it. In a couple of hours, we will get the roster release for our annual January national team camp, commonly referred to as Camp Cupcake. I will be joining Gregg Berhalter and other media members for a conference call to discuss the roster and learn more around the decisions to bring certain players into this camp and really get a better understanding for the vision of the entire US program to start the year.
So, for today’s episode, we aren’t going to look at that roster because it hasn’t been released yet and I don’t want to speculate on any potential call-ups at this point. We will record another episode to go over that roster release and will release that next week as well.
But for today, we have quite a bit of things to discuss, including recent transfer news for several USMNT players now that the January transfer window is open. We are going to talk about the recent form of certain national teamers who just seem to be hitting stride week after week and improving consistently at the moment. And then we will bounce around and answer a question or two and give a final thought for the week before we wrap things up.

We are going to dive into expectations for this US squad, I want to share my thoughts on a preferred or best XI lineup that Stu Holden gave last night, and I will wrap things up with a final thought or two before we head into the weekend.

Earlier this week, I was joined by guest host Chris Piel to recap our second leg matchup against Trinidad and Tobago, aptly naming the episode Tantrum Time due to Sergino Dest’s actions that led to his dismissal from the match itself. We also spoke through our Under 17s World Cup performance and shared some MLS awards and updates on the playoffs going on at the moment there.
Today, you’re not as lucky as it will be only me on the show. But the good news is, I asked for more questions and you all delivered. And that means today is all about the Q&A so I will be spending time answering and sharing thoughts about comments that Jesse Marsch made earlier this week, what I would do as a punishment for Dest, which players I would want to see in January, and plenty more.

Two weeks ago, we gave you a preview into our Nations League quarterfinal matchups against Trinidad and Tobago and also had a recap after our 3-nil victory on US soil, where I was joined by my guest host, Chris Piel, in breaking down the performances and what we could expect in that second leg down in T&T.
Since I took last week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, we weren’t able to recap that second match, so that’s what you can expect today. Recapping the performances, talking about what is next for this national team, I want to chat a bit about our U17s in their World Cup round of 16 matchup they had against Germany, as well as our personal experiences growing up with the national team, and just wrap up with a final thought or two.

Yesterday was all about the Nations League quarterfinal matchup that our US Men had against Trinidad and Tobago. We went through the roster that was chosen, we made predictions into the starting eleven, into the score line, and even went into some of the youth national team news that is going on right now, too.
I had mentioned that I would be taking next week off for the holiday here in the States and would recap everything the following week; however, I mentioned special episode for today because I’ve got a special guest who was gracious enough to join Soccer Pints today to breakdown last night’s performance.
So, today, I am joined by a former teammate of mine, the creator and host of Pint House Soccer Stars, and all-around jack of many trades, Mr. Chris Piel.

Today is all about the Nations League quarterfinal matchup that our US Men have coming up later tonight, Thursday, November 16th at 9pm ET in their first leg against Trinidad and Tobago. Since we weren’t able to release an episode after the roster dropped last Thursday, we are going to go through the roster that head coach Gregg Berhalter has put together for this home and away, two match showdown. We will also make predictions into who starts tonight, what the outcome will be, and then take a look ahead into the away match next Monday in T&T.
In addition, we will chat through what is currently going on with our youth national teams, particularly our Under 17 boys team who has had a fantastic start to the FIFA U17 World Cup that is being held in Indonesia and wrap up again with a final thought or two for the week.

Today, we do a preview and prediction of sorts for both of our friendlies against Germany and Ghana, taking a look at who might be in the starting eleven for what should be the toughest matches we have played all year. We will make some score line predictions as well and will wrap up with a few final thoughts of the week including an update for our US Olympic Team preparations, whether or not the US can compete at the highest level in the world, quick reaction to statements made by Carli Lloyd recently, and the anniversary of the death of a friend and former US U17 National Team captain, Gray Griffin.

This week, we are going to look at the roster that was just released for our October friendlies coming up on October 14th against Germany and October 17th against Ghana. Once again, Gregg has made some great decisions for this group and while we still have a couple of guys out injured, it’s a strong squad coming in. So, we will review who made it, who is missing, and then we will answer another question or two that we didn’t get into last week before wrapping up with some final thoughts.

We are about two weeks away from our next men’s national team friendly against a perennial powerhouse in Germany that is coming up on Saturday, October 14th. And while I wrapped up last week’s episode by saying we would look at those October friendlies, with the rosters not expected to be released for another week, we are going to hold off on that today.
Instead, we have had some incredible questions come through this week that are going to generate the majority of today’s conversation. From reviewing transfers that our players have made to who in Major League Soccer should make a move after their season is completed to finding to success for the 2026 World Cup as well as more Gregg discussion, thoughts on youth soccer development, and much, much more.

This week, we are going to switch gears completely. We are going to do a first edition USMNT 2026 World Cup Roster Prediction and see if we can look into the future in just under three years’ time. With all of the significant change we saw from the 2018 World Cup qualifying cycle to the 2022 cycle, you would expect some turnover, some new faces, and some surprises. This is a near impossible task at hand but we will do our best to make an effort at a 23-man roster prediction. In addition, we have more questions to answer and will wrap things up with some final thoughts of the week.

Due to Hurricane Idalia in the area last week that led to some earlier than expected travel, its been two weeks since we dropped our 60th episode. And, as expected, we had our US Men’s National Team roster release for our upcoming friendlies this Saturday and next Tuesday since that time.
So, today, we are going to take a look at our roster choices, breakdown the best starting XI we could have out of this group, and take a look at some of the missing names in camp and who should have maybe been called in. This week, we talk about the quarterfinal matchup against Canada as well as our semifinal matchup against Panama from Wednesday night of this week, which ultimately saw the end of the US’ run at the Gold Cup.
We will spend the majority of the time looking at each player’s stock in the overall setup of the USMNT player pool. Who earned another look? Who played themselves out of the pool? And just give a current state of the USMNT program moving forward since they will be back with their clubs until our next friendlies in September.

We have some spectacularly amazing news and some spectacularly underwhelming and disappointing news in the US Soccer world. So, this week, we will start today off in celebration of our USMNT capturing the Nations League title over the weekend after dismantling Mexico in their semifinal matchup on Thursday evening and then winning it all over Canada on Sunday night. There is a lot to unpack from both matches, with some standout performances, some first-ever goals for a couple of players, and some really intriguing decisions to be made in the future for the squad.
After celebrating however, we will then chat through one of the most frustrating decisions that US Soccer has ever made. And yes, you know exactly what I am talking about. Bringing back a familiar face to coach our national team once again, which left me absolutely speechless to say the least. We won’t try to make it all doom and gloom, we have to try to make sense of it and see what kind of positives there might be in the reappointment of Gregg Berhalter.
And finally, we will wrap things up with some final thoughts of the week.

This week in the US Soccer world we had possibly some of the biggest news in the history of the sport. And it doesn’t even have to do with an American soccer player. But just to give you a quick overview into what to expect today, we will recap the U20s match against Uruguay; we will then shift gears and spend the bulk of today getting into a preview for next Thursday’s Nations League semi-final match against Mexico, including predictions for the starting eleven, predictions into the score line, and I will share some nuggets from the press conferences that I have been able to attend recently. This week, I had planned to spend the bulk of the episode around making predictions for the tournament, going over which players could have breakout performances, and who realistically had a chance to make the US senior team sooner rather than later.
And while I will still plan to spend some time on that, the biggest topic this week is going to be spent around the news that came out on Tuesday morning of this week, when Folarin Balogun aka Flo had his one-time switch approved by FIFA to officially become a member of the USMNT and giving the USA another massive victory over England in the process of doing so.
I have refused to say his name on this show since the beginning of the year until he committed to our national so I couldn’t be happier with his decision and the impact his allegiance could have on our program.
So, today, we will take a look at what the program looks like now that we have Flo’s commitment and how that could impact the summer roster decisions. We will also make predictions for our U20 men’s national team for their World Cup, and we will wrap today up with some Q&A and final thoughts of the week.

This week, we are going to dive deep into our USYNT U20 Men’s World Cup roster selection that was announced this week by head coach Mikey Varas. In fact, I was able to join Mikey’s press conference shortly after the announcement to learn more about his decision-making into the squad, why certain players weren’t released for the tournament, and gained an understanding of his expectations for the tournament. So today, again, we are going to go through the roster, I’ll share my thoughts on clubs not releasing players for the tournament, and we will wrap things up with a discussion on where certain USMNT players could end up this summer in the transfer window now that their club season’s are winding down.
This week, there has been a lot of things happening is the US Soccer world. We have seen a new Sporting Director hired. We had our Under 20 National Team find out their opponents for their World Cup group stage later this month. We have locations for the US Men’s National Team group stage matches in the Gold Cup confirmed. As I mentioned in my wrap up last week, the US and Mexico have announced their plans for a joint Women’s World Cup bid for 2027. We also have a new 6-member class being inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame this next weekend in Dallas.
Today, I will look at each of those and answer more questions that came in over the past week. So, grab your pint glass and fill it up, because you know how I have to start todays’ episode…
Earlier this week, I went through the actual roster for our friendly against Mexico and made some predictions into who would play and what the score would be. Thankfully my prediction of a 3-1 Mexico win did not come true and despite a pretty overall lackluster performance, we managed to draw 1-1 and keep our current 5-game unbeaten streak against Mexico alive.
So, today, you guessed it, we will breakdown the performance of each player involved in the match for the US and talk about if there is anyone from this group that we will see come the summer time with the Nations League and the Gold Cup on the horizon. I will also answer a few of the questions that came in this week, and will end today as I always do with my final thoughts of the week.

In today’s part 2, we start things off by going over the results from our January friendlies against Serbia and Colombia and highlight some of the key performers and discuss who took their opportunity to put themselves in the conversation for future senior team call ups. We then discuss a major point of emphasis since the last episode dropped, which caused a lot of pushback from listeners about why we should trust the process with US Soccer when US Soccer maybe hasn’t been so trustworthy in recent times. I will then wrap up today by answering a couple of questions and giving my one and only final thought of the week.
With so much to talk about and with so much catching up to do, I decided to break this episode into two parts in what I titled, “Trust the Process.”
Today in Part 1, we are going to chat mostly about all of the changes in leadership, changes in coaching, changes with players, basically the happenings over the past few weeks with US Soccer specifically. And then, in Part 2, we will go over the results of the friendlies, who performed well, who missed their opportunity to impress, and what is next for this program. I’ve also had quite a few questions come in so I will make sure to address those throughout the two parts as well. And as I always do, I will wrap each episode up with my final thoughts of the week, or in this case, the previous weeks.
We had a roster release this Wednesday with 24 players being named to the US Men’s National Team first training camp of the year for two friendlies next week against Serbia and Colombia. So, today we are going to look at who made the squad and what should we really expect to takeaway from this camp. I am also going to answer a few more questions and give a few final thoughts of the week.
While, the US Men’s National Team may have ended 2022 with a loss to the Netherlands in the World Cup round of 16, there hasn’t been a lack of activity amongst the program and players. And with the end of the year, came the end of Gregg Berhalter’s contract as manager of the team. However, the drama that has surrounded this team doesn’t stop there, with a lot happening in the news just this week, so today we will be diving into the whole Gregg situation in more detail, talk about some player developments since the return of the European league seasons and spend some time looking into what we can expect for our upcoming friendlies later this month. As always, I will answer a couple of questions that have come in and will wrap things up with my final thoughts of the week.

We look at what we did well and what maybe wasn’t so great about the Iran result but I think more than anything today, its about celebrating our advancement and focusing on the next match in the round of 16.

It’s been a long road but we are officially starting the World Cup this Sunday and the US will be playing their first match on Monday against Wales. So, what could we possibly talk about today that we haven’t already?? Well, trust me, we have plenty to connect on and we will really be diving into this Welsh match, with lineup predictions and, of course, the score prediction, too.

Earlier this week, I gave a few updates on our Americans Abroad’s recent performances and updated everyone on MLS Playoffs and our national team players who had competed there. I also answered quite a few questions about our national team and gave some final thoughts for the past week.
Only a few days have passed since that episode but we have so much more to talk about today. In the midweek, we had several players in the Champions League and Europa League so we give a quick update on those performances, but most of today we will be hitting some more hot topics in the US Soccer world, especially leading up to the 2022 World Cup; and there are quite of few of them to look at.
Today, I give a few updates to our American Abroad players overseas with their recent performances and I highlight the MLS Playoffs and our national team players who have competed there. In addition, with the questions that have come in about the world cup roster prediction, I answer those and share some perspectives there, as well as give a few final thoughts of the week.
Today is the final part of our 4-part series week, and it is by far the one that I have been most looking forward to, as we get to make our final roster predictions for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. We spent the first three parts of the series discussing each player pool, eliminating some individuals, and now we are left to make the last cuts to get down to a 26-man squad. It’s safe to say at this point, we have around 22-23 players who are locks to make the team, with only a few question marks on what is left to decide. In addition to making our predictions today, we will review the most recent friendlies that the US women had over the past week, as well as preview the MLS Playoffs that begin this weekend. I also have a couple of questions left to answer and will give my final thoughts of the week, too.

As with yesterday, not only will we look at our current options that Gregg and his staff will choose from, we will also eliminate a few midfielders from the pool as well. In addition, I will answer some questions regarding our midfield too.
We are kicking off a 4-part series this week that will ultimately land us at the World Cup Roster Prediction on Friday. The first three parts of the series will break down each positional group and go over our final options that Gregg and his staff will choose from. In addition to each part, I will answer questions specific to the positional groups. To kick off the series, we are going to look at our goalkeepers and defenders for today.
I give my reactions to this entire camp. I break down the players, the coaching staff, and what we need to do in the next 50 days in order to be competitive at the World Cup. I have also had a lot of questions come in during camp that I want to make sure to answer as well.
We have one more day until we play our final World Cup tune-up match against Saudi Arabia. And while we have a lot to unpack from Friday’s performance, or lack thereof, against Japan, I want to use today to go over some of the issues we saw during that match and just give some general comments and opinions about where we currently are. I will briefly preview tomorrow’s friendly as well. Later this week, we will give a full analysis into the entire camp and who is in and who is out for the World Cup come November.
This week gives us the chance to go through the US roster selections that were made, the snubs that missed out and we will break down the first friendly that takes place in Germany against a very talented Japan squad.
