The Washington County Humane Society puts on great fundraising events each year. From their Mega Rummage Sale to their Festival of Trees, every event is fun and engaging. Childcare is a big need in our area right now. This week, Rob Johnson of the Kettle Moraine YMCA and the West Bend Community Foundation, and Heidi Luft of the Supporting Families Together Association, join me to discuss some concerted efforts within our community to increase the number of childcare providers and help reduce the barriers to families seeking childcare in Washington County. One of the biggest drivers of this initiative is a $400,000 investment from the West Bend Community Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and Washington County.

The Love is Greater Than Hate Project is a nonprofit aimed at ending interpersonal violence and promoting forgiveness. Usually I kick off my new seasons in August, but there's a lot going on this summer and I just couldn't wait. So, much like Christmas in July, you get an early present. This week, Emily Greene, Executive Director of the Youth and Family Project, joins me to talk about their upcoming Christmas in July Fundraiser. The event is taking place at the West Bend Football High Schools' Fields on Saturday, July 27th, 2024, and will feature three teams of celebrity competitors.
Also, I get the opportunity to be the stadium announcer, which is probably a mistake on their part, but I'm cheap so they get what they pay for. 😅
The celebrity athletes will be competing in some competitions that can only be described as "zany" (or "outlandish" or "downright fun"). Plus there will be a white elephant silent auction and a whole lot more. All for $5. Nice.

Juneteenth is coming up on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024. This week's episode is a two-parter (all in one episode). In the first half, I speak with County Executive Josh Schoemann and Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Jay Fisher about Washington County’s 5th annual Juneteenth Day celebration. We delve into the significance of Juneteenth, the evolution of the event, and the collaboration between the county and the Boys & Girls Club.
In the second half of the episode, I am joined by Hadwat Sankari from Just Us of Washington County to discuss their Juneteenth Community Celebration which is coming up on Saturday, June 23rd at Pike Lake State Park in the North Shelter.

Kewaskum Friends of the Parks is a group that was recently formed to help raise funds to improve the Village of Kewaskum's parks. They are holding an event to raise awareness for plans to build a new beer garden in Kewaskum's Kiwanis Park on Saturday, May 18th from 2-8p. The event is fittingly called, "Pints & Polka," and will feature live Polka Fusion, an accordion player, food and of course, beer.

The Heart and Homestead program is a new initiative from Washington County and Economic Development Washington County that aims to make homeownership more attainable for Washington County residents. The program offers down payment incentives to qualified homebuyers, and it also provides opportunities for those buyers to earn back their equity through community service and charitable giving. The program is expected to have a positive impact on the housing market in Washington County, while encouraging everyone to get involved with their local communities.

As we're rolling through what is usually the coldest part of the season, it's time to set our sights to warmer days. This year, West Bend is hosting its first ever Bockfest celebration. Bockfest is a German tradition that celebrates the end of winter and beginning of spring. Bockfest West Bend takes place at Regner Park in West Bend on Satuday, March 2nd from 11a-5p.
The event features traditional Bock beer brewed by 1840 Brewing Company. The experience is made even more authentic when the "fire tenders" stick a hot poker in your beer, which brings out a frothy, caramelized flavor.
In order to attend, you must purchase your tickets in advance. Each purchase comes with a 24-ounce beer stein and $5 in Bock Bucks that you can use at participating West Bend businesses.

Pete Rettler, Dean of Moraine Park's West Bend Campus, joins me today to talk about his 30 Runs to Remember event to benefit the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial & Education Center. For 30 days in the month of December, Pete will be running in honor of someone with ties to September 11th, the Memorial, the military, first responders, fire and EMS.
Pete has been on this show a few times before to talk about his running streak. This year marks the 30th anniversary of his run. To honor that, he's raising funds for the Memorial. Funds raise will be used to help subsidize the cost of busing field trips to the Memorial, which sometimes exceed $500.
As the president of the Memorial's board of directors, I am very proud of this initiative and extremely thankful to Pete for all of his support and dedication. Of course, I speak for the entire board when I say we are equally thankful to each of the sponsors for making this initiative possible.

In 2021, Melissa and Matthew Theisen of Slinger learned something that no expecting parents should ever have to hear. Their son, Morgan Matthew, was developing with a syndrome called, VACTERL association. This syndrome, affects multiple body systems—including the heart, vertebrae, limbs, the esophagus, and more (VACTERL is an acronym for the various systems).
While the caring and unbelievably talented nurses, doctors, and staff at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin did all they could to save Morgan, he eventually succumbed to his affliction, and passed away.
Through their loss, Melissa and Matt created the Morgan Matthew Foundation. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) that raises critical funds to advance research, care, & treatment for infants with complex medical conditions.
The Theisens join me on this week's episode to tell Morgan's story, talk about their experience at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and tell us how the MMF is giving back to those who care for our most vulnerable kids.

We certainly love a good festival! And coming up next week, West Bend, Wisconsin's Regner Park is home to two great festivals. German Night is a celebration of German food and culture will be coming to Regner Park on Wednesday, July 13. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and features music by the River City Blaskapelle starting at 5:30 and Until Dawn from 7:30-10:30. Then, just a few days later, Regner Fest takes place at, you guessed it, Regner Park. Friday night, July 15, the fun starts at 4 p.m. with music from Bella Cain at 7:30. Saturday, June 16, there are a ton of fun activities for the kids following the Dirty Ninja Mud Run and then music from Buckshot from noon-4 p.m. Both German Night and Regner Fest are put on by West Bend Friends of Parks & Recreation, an organization that helps supplement West Bend's Parks & Rec department in order to make our West Bend parks beautiful above and beyond what's possible on a municipal budget. I've spoken on the show about my daughter, Bri, who is a competitive powerlifter. Well, she got her start in powerlifting while watching women like Heidi Kilbourn lifting at a CrossFit gym in West Bend, Wisconsin. Located in Saukville, the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) offers a neutral ground for children and families affected by abuse to be able to tell their stories to forensic interviewers. Mrs. Sherry Gerhartz is the dean of students and a music teacher at Kewaskum Elementary School in Kewaskum, WI. This week's show is a great example of why I'm doing this and what I've missed since I left radio. On this episode, I speak with Shannon Siebert of Washington County Foster Closet to talk about her organization and the importance of supporting children in foster care—as well as foster families—in Washington County, Wisconsin. The Washington County Foster Closet supports our area children by providing clothing and supplies to foster families. Imagine getting a call that three teen children are going to be placed with your family in the next half hour! Being prepared for all ages, sizes, and genders of children would be impossible as a foster family, and the Washington County Foster Closet serves as a resource to the foster families in our area with clothing, supplies, and much needed support.
This is one of those episodes that makes you think and gets you wondering how you can do more for those who are in need in our community, and I truly thank Shannon Siebert and Koa Dautermann for all they do in Washington County.
