Nationalize these long-term care homes already. They have blood on their hands.

So Doug Ford FINALLY relented and is promising to bring in paid sick leave. It's shameful and embarrassing that it took this long and this many casualties for it to happen.
It's good that Derek Chauvin's's been found guilty on all three charges, but there's some background stuff and context that continues to bother me. One such botheration is that some are calling this "justice" when really it's just the beginning of accountability, and we don't know what the sentencing will be yet.
Today's topics are quite the doozy. The Florida GOP wants to tackle ‘Cancel Culture’ by secretly recording professors, the BC government is focusing on vaccinating Whistler resort area for the upcoming tourism season even though we're still in a pandemic, people's rights are being violated in Minneapolis and parts of the area are under military occupation, media covering injustices and police brutality are being ushered to checkpoints where state patrol are taking pictures of every journalist’s credentials and face, the U.S. Government is tracking journalists and immigration advocates through a secret database, and Denmark is stripping Syrian refugees of their status claiming that parts of Syria are safe to go back to. There's a lot that's bothering me this week and today...

The Air Canada refunds are a good thing, and buying Canadian aircraft and expanding service to more Canadian communities are also good. So it looks like the South African variant of the coronavirus may evade protection from the Pfizer vaccine according to an Israeli study. So it turns out that the RCMP destroyed records of police communications from the night Colten Boushie died and conducted a parallel internal probe into the handling of the case without notifying the civilian watchdog CRCC. The RCMP continues to face allegations of brutality and sexual assault. They also stood by and did nothing while innocent Mi'kmaq fisherman were attacked by angry white fishermen last year. Georgia continues to do its level best to suppress democracy in the state, especially where African-Americans and other minorities reside. I would caution against too much celebrating, as a split right and then a reunited right has wreaked havoc on Canada in the past 20 years, and that offers a lesson for how the legitimizing of a fascist party could happen in America after just one or two election cycles.

A myriad of obstacles stand in the way of such a notion being anywhere close to true, and it's time to expose it as the hack argument it is. One argument I forgot to include was the following: if you live in a poor and/or rural community, how are you supposed to get a better job if there are none around and you can't afford to move?

A new report has proven that the blame for the Democratic Iowa caucus debacle from earlier in the nomination process rests squarely at the feet of the DNC. I understand this, but let's take a step back here and think about what this means for the potential shake-up of the established political order, and the radicalization of the right.

Today is the grim anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, where Marc Lépine used a gun and a hunting knife to kill 15 women before ultimately turning the gun on himself. According to his suicide later and overheard statements during the massacre, he was "fighting against feminism." This offers a lesson for those who claim that feminism is no longer needed, even though similar massacres targeting women have continued to this day, such as the Toronto van attack and Elliot Rodger's Isla Vista killings.
So Brexit is still happening, and it's still a pandemic, and this could still have massive repercussions for Brits and the global order. It may also result in the breakup of the United Kingdom and be yet another crisis for Europe to try and manage and deal with, and we absolutely are not talking about it even though we should be.

Proposed legislation in the House of Commons would not only put equality for disabled persons at risk, but it would also effectively try and gently encourage disabled people to consider killing themselves. This has also been suggested in Ontario, another conservative-run province. Manitoba, another conservative-run province, is one of the worst COVID hotspots in the world at the moment. Basically, the vast majority of provinces (and the vast majority of Canadians) are being governed by conservatives who are utterly bungling the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
It is Black Friday, and Amazon workers and those in Amazon's supply chain around the world are choosing this day to have a range of protests and strikes to call attention to Amazon's gross conduct and violations. Using the hashtag #MakeAmazonPay workers are demanding respect for their rights, for Amazon to stop dodging taxes, and for them to implement higher environmental standards.

The uproar and backlash was swift, to the point it got a mention in Parliament. Though they swiftly reversed their decision, the fury continues and while I'm mad at it, there's another aspect to this story that has flown under the radar, and that bothers me...
"Remember remember, the Fifth of November..." Except that people have completely forgot. There's a reason why Guy Fawkes is burned in effigy by Brits every autumn, and he also provides a weirdly relevant lesson (and perhaps a grave warning) for those of us living in the present and in the wake of the contested US Presidential election.
So it's the worst-case scenario: a contested election. I thought Biden was supposed to provide a clear landslide? Where are all those coveted centrists, moderates, and disaffected Republicans? It's a record turnout, and yet the result is contested. So now I ask the Democratic Party, was all this really worth it?
It's finally the night. The terrible, terrible night. How did it get to this? How has this become "accepted" by American society? This isn't normal, nor should it be. How did it get like this? Who or what is to blame? Is there any hope? Who will win? Which creepy old man is better or worse, Trump or Biden? It's all a disgusting farce, and it's deeply bothering me today.
We're 24 hours away from the US Presidential election of 2020, and there's a palpable tension in society. There has also been concerning news about an unscalable wall being built around the White House, and Trump admitting he may try and steal the election. This is on top of other concerning news like Amy Coney Barrett being confirmed to the Supreme Court, polling sites and ballot boxes being limited, defunding of the USPS, voter suppression, voter intimidation, and more. I think between all of this and a lack of enthusiasm for Biden, that Trump wins.
And so our series on French involvement in the African continent through the centuries, and the ongoing economic and geopolitical exploitation of Africa comes to a close. I find the French fly under the radar in this regard, and I wanted to bring attention to them, and the systems and powers that keep African nations locked into the struggles they continue to face. And yet, we blame them for it when it is not entirely their fault.

I'm sure you've seen posts from these people like "gonna teach my kid about socialism and take 95% of their candy and give it to someone who didn't go out."

"The African Theatre" of the Cold War disappears overnight with the implosion of the Soviet Union. The continent also got flooded with Soviet weaponry, leading to the intense bloodshed across the continent in the 90s and up to the present day. But with the rise of the War on Terror, Africa became geopolitically important once more and now finds itself within a new scramble for the continent.
All of a sudden, in the wake of WW2, Africa becomes a battleground for competing interests between the West and the USSR. France also felt that they could prevent geopolitical obscurity by continuing to have a hand in Africa, and this brings us to many of today's problems...
So the Scramble for Africa more or less ends with the beginning of WW1. Afterwards, Togo and Cameroon and swiftly absorbed into France's colonial holdings. Things stay calm until WW2 and the Fall of France, with Indochina and West Africa declaring loyalty to the puppet regime of Vichy France. It was French Equatorial Africa, and under the leadership of Félix Éboué, that helped pave the way for Allied victory in various African campaigns and WW2 in general. So how did the French thank them?
How does Europe go from controlling only ten percent of the African continent in 1870 to controlling ninety percent by 1914? It's a long story, so let's break it down with some history in French West Africa, the industrial revolution, quinine medicine, a tyrannical Belgian king, and a meeting of White aristocrats in Berlin in 1884...

He then went on to add “We’re certainly all hoping for a smooth transition or a clear result from the election, like many people are around the world. If it is less clear, there may be some disruptions and we need to be ready for any outcomes. I think that’s what Canadians would expect of their governments and we’re certainly reflecting on that.”
So what are these preparations? What are the contingencies that are being considered? But of course, no one thought to ask apparently. While I get that some plans might need to remain secret and hidden from the populace, Canadians have a right to know what the government is planning so that we can prepare ourselves and offer support or criticism. But instead, this story flew completely under the radar and that bothers me.

Happy Thanksgiving! If you're American, you're probably confused as your Thanksgiving is in November. Here in Canada, our Thanksgiving is on the second Monday of October. How this came to be is something very few Canadians are familiar with, despite some fascinating and dumb history behind it. So of course this is what's bothering me today. Beau then admitted that because of this comment, he had been trying to come up with a sandwich-fascism analogy for 40 minutes. Here's your analogy, good sir.

Here in Canada, much of the news is dominated by how the nation moves forward with students going back to school. I find the discussion very narrow, and we're not being creative and forward-thinking in a time that demands innovation and creativity from us.

In response to those, the alt-right came out and now at least two protesters are dead with several more injured. I thought the police were supposed to "serve and protect" and catch criminals and murderers. Since that clearly isn't the case, it really calls into question their function and purpose.
Another unarmed black man shot multiple times by police. Riots ensue. Anyone else heard this story before? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. We need to rethink policing.

The line for where kids need to be is pretty arbitrary, and these are unprecedented times that call for thoughtful and measured action, not devotion to old norms.
If women "belong in the kitchen," then why don't we see more women serving as head chefs in restaurants? It's something worth thinking about.
