In the UK, just 28% of professors are female. And once you go up the chain in education this percentage only drops. A stat highlighted to me by my guest, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Reading, Parveen Yaqoob OBE.

Parveen has recently been awarded an OBE for her services to higher education, but her story comes from adversity that many women may relate to.

From overcoming a common South Asian expectation not to study & get married to facing a male-dominated career Parveen talks me through how she's become who she is today. Her invaluable advice for those who wish to go into higher education, both to teach or study is a must-listen.

I’m so grateful to have received such support for this, my podcast, my book and the enrichment program that I launched to better the lives of disadvantaged children.

I’ve been reflecting on the past year, the things I’ve achieved and some of the things I’ve learned; the most obvious to me is the LEARN model. Love, Enrich, Appreciate, Relationships and Network. In this episode, I explain how you can look at your own life and goals through the lens of this model; and how I’m applying it to what I’ll be striving to achieve next.

Needless to say, our Vision Board Workshop in January feels like it was just yesterday and a lifetime ago at the same time. As we approach the end of 2021 My Vision board is still hanging on my bedroom wall as a reminder of what I set out to achieve at the start of this year. As we approach January again, I’m really looking forward to revisiting the workshop once more and setting my 2022 vision for myself.

I hope you can join me on the journey also!

In this episode, I am delighted to be joined by Business Coach, Dr Morgana McCabe Allan.
Previously an academic, researching Contemporary Archaeology she takes a deep interest in who are now and how we came to be in the culture that we’re in.

We’re told that we’re only as good as our last achievement, that pushing forward is the only way to be more but is to do with our construct of time. In this episode we explore the importance of ‘being in the world’, looking at how our perception is everything; however, we see the world through our own lens and nothing is real in the way that we perceive it.

An off the wall concept on the first time you hear it but the importance that Dr McCabe puts on designing a career and world around yourself and not what culture dictates to you is a refreshing perspective on modern business.

In this episode, I’m talking with Jhumar Johnson, Director of the Vice Chancellor's Office at The Open University.
As Director of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office Jhumar’s focus at the University is two-fold, acting as aide, adviser and problem-solver to the Vice-Chancellor to assist with achieving his objectives and responsibilities towards the success of the University; and ensuring alumni, donors and partners are at the heart of the OU family along with our staff and students.

Jhumar was responsible for delivering the University’s first-ever fundraising campaign, raising £60m against a target of £50m and running a year-long integrated celebratory campaign to celebrate the Open University’s 50th anniversary in 2019 across the four UK nations and internationally. She has a background in major gifts consulting and practice in the not-for-profit sector, advising individuals and families on shaping their philanthropy and mentoring and coaching.

In this episode, we also talk about her current mentoring challenge; the ways in which mislabelling for example, "Imposter Syndrome" can lead to a negative spiral; the challenges that women face in the virtual workplace; how to cope with rejection in fundraising; and how to give gracefully through mentoring.

  2. How to avoid the trap between siblings of ranking the love given and received.
  3. Tips moving forward on how to foster a stable and loving relationship at all generations.

Mirela shares her experiences and motivations behind launching the Global Woman Club from empowering all women to directly impacting those who are in abusive relationships.
She shares what it means to be an ‘empowered woman’ and breaks down the hidden power she believes is inside every woman. She shares with me a wonderful story of a woman who reluctantly took the stage at one of her events and, as a direct result, was offered international speaking opportunities.

We discuss how repair attempts can help solve the solvable problems to de-escalate the tension and the importance of bounce back to reduce the time to get back to being kind, loving and affectionate.

In this first of four special episodes, I am joined by my husband Avnish Goyal to discuss how Loving in Lockdown can be improved with your intimate relationship with your partner. The lengthy period in lockdown of close contact may have magnified and intensified negativity, conflicts and dissatisfaction in your relationship. We discuss some of the factors that may cause stress, such as money (economic hardship), sex (incompatibilities) and children (homeschooling and how to raise children). We share some simple tips to help start addressing some of the challenges and constructively deal with conflict.

  1. To be aware of the holes in your love bucket, to repair this and watch how your love bucket overflows.
  2. Try the love languages quiz by Gary Chapman to give and receive love in a more meaningful way and grow closer than ever before (available online https://www.5lovelanguages.com/).
  3. Write and share what you are grateful for in your partner, sharing how you appreciate each other.

It all starts with being a detective of your life and how you are responding and reacting to situations. A supportive relationship is more likely to cope more effectively with lockdown and respond sensitively when the other is feeling stressed.

In this episode, I'm joined by Manjit Gill MBE.

Manjit K. Gill, is CEO and founder of the phenomenal charity, Binti International which is registered in the UK.
Binti has a vision to create a world where all women have menstrual dignity.
Manjit has amassed over 20 years of international business expertise and has been involved in 7 startups prior to Binti. It was her role as a volunteer mentor for a young lady in Kenya with the Cherie Blair Foundation that led her to start Binti when she found out that some women do not have access to menstrual products. Her mission is to create a huge, social impact, whilst generating a sustainable organisation. To provide basic menstrual products and education for girls and women across the world. Whilst dispelling stigmas, taboos and smash shame with periods.

In the episode, we speak on how Manjit began her work on Binti and what inspired her to launch the charity. Having spent the majority of her career in Sales and Marketing, she was one day surprised by the fact that 'many women don't have access to periods products'. She shares how this fact moved her to launch Binti. Speaking on what drove her to further the conversation, she reflects on how the definition of periods is still incorrect in places such as the Oxford dictionary.

She shares that 1 in 3 girls through the pandemic have not had access to menstrual products and speaks on her work in the UK to address this problem and how essential products are still inaccessible in a first-world economy like the UK. She shares how we can further educate ourselves on menstruation, and despite having sex education at young ages, how we're unable to still comfortably speak about it.

Manjit has worked closely with women in India to move forward the 'taboo' conversation of periods. She speaks on the shame and sexual stigma that comes along with periods in many communities and how this miseducation leads to the conversation being swept to one side.

We go on to talk about some incredible people that she's come across such as Arunachalam Muruganantham, also known as Pad Man. She shares the impact that this has had.
Manjit goes on to tell me how she has overcome resistance from within her own family; the conversations that she's had to have and how she's approached many of them, including a story of how her own mother was apprehensive of her speaking on the Sikh channel about periods.
With her family, she shares with me how involved her own children are in Binti and raising awareness.

Binti is currently innovating education and helping communities all over the world with menstrual education and Manjit gives us insight into the campaigns that they're pushing. How she's making access to education to those in the developing world easier and initiatives to change the culture and understanding around periods.
Manjit speaks on how she's able to 'keep going', building a sizable charity and how she's 'learned on the job'. She reflects on the learnings she's carried forward from her sales role.

In this episode, I'm joined by serial entrepreneur, Avnish Goyal. Avnish’s desire to make a difference is the fuel that has helped to create many of his achievements. He was raised by parents, Santosh and Hemraj who instilled in him a strong set of values of industry, integrity and ingenuity which have set him in good stead for building one the most respected companies in social care in the UK, Hallmark Care Homes, and won him and his team many awards and accolades.

More recently, he decided to diversify into building and operating retirement villages under the brand of Santhem Residences. The care homes and care villages are being built through the construction arm Savista Developments which he also set up in 2018 to manage the expansion. Avnish’s vision is to transform the social care sector for older people and to make a difference in a world where everyone has the same opportunities irrespective of their gender, class, race or sexual orientation. Avnish is now a recognized speaker on topics such as entrepreneurship, personal development and building culture and performance in the workplace.

We talk about where Avnish's drive came from; reflecting on his upbringing and roots, he shares how life in Essex and coming from very little shaped his character. How the influence for the work he does today began at a young age when he began to stand up for himself and leadership of his Mother's unwavering attitude towards education for her children.

Avnish is focused on excellence and he shares his approach towards being the best at something and the key difference between actually being the best and 'trying to be the best'. Much of his early success in property can be attributed to this virtue and how his more recent endeavours are benefitting from this attitude is truly inspiring.

We finally talk about his philanthropy and our relationship, with him, of course, being my husband. Talking on the Vision Board Workshop that we are both currently preparing for, we talk about the inspiration behind these workshops and others like it that we host and hopefully do a good job at convincing anyone listening to join us, for free, on January 10th 2021!

I'm honoured to be joined by Javed Khan, leading figure in the UK public and voluntary sectors, with thirty-four years’ experience developing a track record of successfully managing change through key high profile leadership roles.

He is currently the Chief Executive of Barnardo's, the UK's largest children’s charity and oversees over 1000 services in local communities, including support for children who have been sexually exploited, young people leaving the care system, children with a parent in prison and families struggling to cope. In the episode, we start by talking about what drives Javed to do what he does and how, with all of the responsibilities he has, he avoids overwhelm. Starting as a math's teacher, Javed reflects on what led him to get to the position of CEO that he's in today and how his journey is driven by purpose.

Growing up in the humble backstreets of inner-city Birmingham with hard-working parents who didn't speak English, Javed recalls, as a child, never having a parents evening but always seeing how hard they worked and being surrounded by love being the driving factor in his success. Often found asking himself 'should I have been a Barnardo's child?', Javed gives us a unique personal insight into how his personal experience and self-awareness helps shape his vision for how the charity seeks to help children.
A core part of his work is managing the services of the organisation and this authentic approach gives him a better perspective on how services need to be nuanced towards the 'differed starting points that people come to Barnardo's with'; he gives a great example of the helpline Barnardo's launched 'Boloh', the UK’s first helpline supporting vulnerable Black, Asian and minority ethnic children and families impacted by COVID-19.

Touching further the impacts of COVID, Javed shares the challenges that young people are going through at the moment and the hard work that Barnardo's is doing for them. He personally spends time with the children the charity helps and so when speaking on the topic, Javed has an authentic & grounded view of what challenges the children he's seeking to serve need from him and the charity. Javed stresses the importance of resilience that we must all have in order to get through this unpredictable time. Often found asking himself 'am I doing a good enough job' & how this has been amplified by the pandemic.

As a mother myself, I found Javed's advice on online safety, especially with children from less fortunate backgrounds, eye-opening and further reassurance that at the helm of this incredible charity is an authentic, grounded and forward-thinking leader who is perfect for the job.
Javed's authentic leadership style and drives to see change is clear throughout the episode and the insight he shares for individuals wanting to impact not only the world but themselves is second to none.

Naturally, with all that she's doing, Lavina lives an extremely busy lifestyle little did I know, this was what inspired exercise snacking and Lavina explains the massive health benefits of something as simple as a 10minute walk after eating to control diseases like diabetes.

Being quite a private person, before launching her Instagram, Lavina's journey onto social media has been met with challenges. And while she's impacted so many people we talk about how it's helped bring her family closer together too. At the height of the lockdown, she was doing workouts daily, Lavina shares the challenges of making this possible, especially combined with family life. She shares with me how she self-motivates to continue serving the community day-after-day and even whilst self-isolating when a family member contracted COVID-19.

Going into the deeper reasons behind what drives Lavina to help the elderly and inspire younger generations to keep fit and active. We touch on her father-in-law's journey, who sadly passed away within 6-months of being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Losing someone she loved as quickly as she did, she reflects on how exercise helped her and her husband through such a challenging time and what others can take away from it. Her journey is very much inspired by those around her and her drive to make the world a better place in whatever way she can. Lavina is so inspirational and I'm delighted to have had this conversation with her. To keep up with her journey, you can find her on Instagram @feelgoodwithlavina.
