Two hunters were trudging through the woods of Western Kentucky when they discovered something horrible.
The mutilated naked body of a young man laid in the overgrown weeds. He’d been dead for at least two days. His hands and feet were lopped off, his teeth yanked out, his skull crushed.
When police responded to that remote area in Daviess County on Jan. 7, 1990, they discovered the man had also been savagely beaten and shot several times.
Authorities didn’t know who the man was. He didn’t match the description of any missing person from the area. And the lack of fingerprints and teeth, along with severe damage to his face, made identification impossible.
They couldn’t even decipher how he ended up out there. There was no way a vehicle squeezed itself into such a far-flung location. And if the man was carried to the spot where his body was found, his killer would have had to walk for miles.
“If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area, we want them to contact us,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Ed Brady told the Evansville Press back then. “We are not ruling out anything at this point.”
Numerous dead bodies have been found in the Evansville area in recent months. The cases range from mysterious disappearances to grisly homicides.
But perhaps none of the recent cases are as bizarre as the saga of Daviess County John Doe
================Over the past 29 years, the case has veered into areas that would make even the most lurid TV show blush. There have been false identifications, accusations of Satanism and, for brief periods, the looming specter of multiple serial killers.
All investigators knew about the man was his measurements: between 5'0 and 5'6, 130-140 pounds and about 35 years old. They had no suspects and no solid leads.
Then a weird theory emerged.
According to a front-page story in the April 8, 1990, edition of the Evansville Press, Tri-State police were dealing with a strange new problem.
That March, Daviess County officials said they filed 75 complaints or charges against 11 young people for reportedly “committing criminal acts related to a Satanic ritual.”
A spokesman with the Owensboro branch of the Satanic Awareness Committee told the Press that maybe the mutilated man’s death was tied to occultism as well.

This is not a typical podcast that we do, but we wanted to give this topic the weight it deserves. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be considered "domestic violence." 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have been injured by an intimate partner. At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse or neglect in the past year in the United States. This is likely an underestimate because many cases are unreported. In 2020, 1,750 children died of abuse and neglect in the United States.
