This week we're taking a break from our study through the book of Matthew to understand how the early church was empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel boldly and build radical community. It is our hope and prayer that God's Word would empower you to participate in this radical community, viewing your brothers and sisters in Christ as true family. It is also our hope that you would join with us in praying for boldness to proclaim the Gospel boldly to those around us even when it means great personal cost.

We are continuing our current study through the book of Matthew. The next section is Matthew 24-25, which I am calling The Return of the King. Looking toward His return, Jesus urges His followers to stay awake, faithful, and fruitful. The parables of watchfulness remind us that eternity is not a distant idea, but a present motivation. In this series we learn to live ready - stewarding time and grace until the King comes again.
Blessings,
Matt Altman and Curtis Mortenson

We are continuing our current study through the book of Matthew. The next section is Matthew 21-23, which I am calling The King Confronts Fruitless Religion. As Jesus enters Jerusalem as her King, He exposes hypocrisy and calls for authentic worship. The King's authority overturns hollow rituals and demands hearts that bear true fruit. These messages challenge us to examine whether our faith is mere form - or a living response to the presence of Christ.

We are continuing our current study through the book of Matthew. The next section is Matthew 18-20, which I am calling Life Together In The Kingdom. Jesus teaches what kingdom life looks like among His people: humility, forgiveness, mercy, and service. In community we practice the grace we've received, extending patience and compassion to one another. This series shows that greatness in God's kingdom is found not in status, but in serving.
Blessings,
Pastor and Elder Matt Altman and Elder Curtis Mortenson

Since Summer 2025 we have been studying the Gospel of Matthew. I am calling our next section, Matthew 15 - 17, "The Cross-Shaped Path." The King's true identity shines in His miracles, His glory on the mountain, and his call to deny ourselves and follow Him. These passages trace the move from revelation to surrender, from seeing who Jesus is to walking His path of humility. The road of the cross is costly-but it leads to life.

He is risen! Thank you for joining us this Easter Sunday as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This service we are teaching through 1 Corinthians 15 where Paul reminds us of the foundation of our faith. It is our hope and prayer that hearing this message would give you hope for the future...knowing that because of His atoning work on the cross we have hope for the future.
If you do not worship Jesus as your Lord it is our prayer that through hearing God's Word today you would believe in Jesus's death and resurrection and offer yourself to Him completely as God. If you have questions or would like to speak to someone about this Gospel please contact us at any of the contacts below.
With Love,
Berean of Kodiak

This year we are continuing to teach through the Gospel of Matthew. My hope in walking through this Gospel is to help us see Jesus like we never have. Matthew is more than a biography of Jesus. Much like Exodus, it tells the story of God saving His people from slavery; however, Jesus doesn't save us from a tyrannical Pharaoh, instead, he saves us from the tyrant of sin and death. He sets us free to live in the promised land of His kingdom. So, as we explore Matthew's gospel, I want you to see Jesus clearly and love Him fully!

In this Advent series, Echoes of Eden, we look back to Genesis 1-3 to hear the first whispers of the Gospel. In the darkness of sin and the chaos of a broken world, God promised light, hope, and a coming Redeemer. Advent reminds us that the One promised in Eden has come and that He will come again.

65 years ago, Berean Baptist Church was planted in Kodiak, Alaska. Since then, God has filled His church with believers from all over the world to do His mighty work. This week we are serving God in the community during the day, and gathering together in the evenings to dive into Philippians. We have the exciting opportunity to hear the Word preached from the different men who have pastored Berean.
Join us as we celebrate God's work in Kodiak, the gift of His Word to us today, and the blessing of His Spirit to continue to do good work until His return!

Right now, we are studying through the book of Joshua. Joshua is a bridge book from the time of the Exodus to the time of Judges. But just because it is a bridge doesn't mean it isn't filled with profound truth for us to unpack. One of the most prominent themes throughout the book of Joshua is how we are called to walk by faith and not by sight. For all of us to stand on the promises of God boldly and expectantly trusting him to come through. In Joshua, we see a man of God who says, "God, you are my plan A, and there is no plan B." My hope is that we, as believers, would walk in the victory Jesus has already won.

This January and February we are working through a new series called "To the Bereans." These messages will be targeted at meeting our church right where we are, encouraging, exhorting, and challenging us to pursue the Lord with renewed vigor. This is different from my usual format, and it is a real stretch for me to do this, but as I have prayed, I feel like the Lord has put these deep "soul aches" deep in me as your pastor. I pray that the Lord uses these messages to speak directly to Berean so that we might be all he has called us to be.

Advent is meant to be a season of hope. Often, we find ourselves in seasons of tumult and trial, and on those dark nights of the soul it is easy to lose hope. It's also easy to feel like God is not there that He doesn't care about your pain or your suffering. As we study through Ruth, our aim is to show you how God's providence is always at work even when cannot see it. We want to show you how God knows and cares about everyone everywhere. God does not show respect because of status or ethnicity, God loves the whole world. So, buckle up with us as we dive into this little book all about a big God.

This fall, we are teaching through through the book of James. I am excited to unpack this little Epistle with you! James is a book about putting your faith into practice. James doesn't struggle with application; in fact, this book likely has more in common with the book of Proverbs than other New Testament letters. It's not that James ignores doctrine, but that he earnestly desires that what we know about God impacts how we live for God. James is a pastor, and as we unpack this book, we will see that it is his heart to shepherd us toward godly living.

Last week, we started our fall series through the book of James. I am excited to unpack this little Epistle with you! James is a book about putting your faith into practice. It can be easy to think that if I just had more of "X", that my trial would be bearable. James confronts us Wirth the idea that in Christ we have all we need to remain steadfast through trials.

This week we have the privilege to have, as a guest preacher, Pastor Jerry Favor. Jerry has pastored Victory Church in Sand Point Idaho since 1994. I have had the privilege of getting to know Jerry over the last five years and I can tell you Jerry is an encourager and a humble servant of Jesus. I am so thankful for his friendship and I praise God that he loves our church. Please pray for him as he brings the Word from Psalm 19.

Today is part 2 of a 2 part series on 1 Corinthians 12. Today we will unpack Spiritual Gifts. My goal is for us to leave with a fulsome understanding of spiritual gifts. We will ask and answer a few basic questions about spiritual gifts. First we will ask, "What are spiritual gifts?" Second we will ask, "Why does God give us these gifts?" and finally we will ask, "How do we learn our gifts and use our gifts?" God has apportioned Gifts of Grace for you. The gifts are not only meant to bless you but to bless the entire congregation. My prayer is that as we walk out of this morning we will be challenged and encouraged to take our place in the Body of Christ and activate for His glory!

Today we will be starting two-part series from 1 Corinthians 12 on the body of Christ. Have you ever said to yourself, "I love Jesus, but I don't really love the church." Maybe you have wondered if it is really necessary for Christians to be a part of the local church. After all, there are amazing preachers you can access online, and worship music that, sung by professionals, never misses notes. Why do we need to participate in a local church if we have all this? Moreover, many of us have experienced problems in Church where "Christians" have hurt us, caused division, or have failed morally. How can we commit to take part in such a broken and messed up organization?
Today we will address this struggle and unpack why Jesus calls us as his followers to be members of the body. We will also see how intentionally integrating into the local church is essential for Christian flourishing.

AUDIO ISSUE FIXED.... This summer we have been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John and this Sunday is our last Sunday in John. Today we will unpack Peter's restoration in John 21. This chapter in many ways acts as an epilogue or post-credits scene to the book of John, but it is an extremely potent text about the power of Grace in the life of the believer. It is my hope and prayer that God would use this passage to help us rest in the grace of Jesus. Many of us try to earn the grace of God as if it is a loan that we must pay back, but grace isn't a loan it is a gift given to us from a loving God. We don't earn it, yet we live our lives in response to it. Our service to Him is our loving response to His great love for us.

This summer we ave been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be unpacking John 20, specifically talking through the resurrection of Jesus. It is not an understatement to say that the resurrection of Jesus is the linchpin of our faith. Some have sought to downgrade the resurrection by making it merely a spiritual story, turning the life of Jesus into a fable or myth. Others have asked if the resurrection really even matters because Jesus's teaching and example are enough for us to follow. People do this because the claim is SO EXTRAORDINARY. Scripture claims that Jesus was killed on a Roman Cross, placed in a borrowed tomb, and was risen 3 days later. This is an incredible claim that requires credible evidence. This morning we are going to unpack the evidence for the resurrection and seek to understand what the resurrection means.

This summer we have been doing into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be unpacking John 18-19 seeking to understand the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. Sometimes its easy to think that the God of the Old Testament is focused on justice, that He's a God who is angry and wrathful toward sin, while the God of the New Testament seems to be focused on grace, a God who is overflowing with love and mercy. So which is it? We know that God is immutable, meaning he does not change and is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore, so why this apparent contradiction? How can God be both perfectly just and overflowing with grace? Today we will explore this tension and see its beautiful culmination in the crucifixion of Jesus our Messiah who is filled with grace and truth.

This summer we have been diving into selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will be in John 14-16 talking through the Holy Spirit's presence in our life. If you grew up in conservative evangelicalism this can feel daunting because much of the discussion about the Spirit has been centered on what the Spirit does or does not do in our day. So out of an abundance of caution many of us rarely, if ever, think about the Spirit, pray to the Spirit, or even seek to be filled by the Spirit because we are afraid to cross some theological boundary. It is my prayer and aim this morning to help you understand and see the beauty of God the Spirit, and to help you learn to walk by the Spirit in fullness for the Glory of God.

This summer we have been diving into the selected passages in the Gospel of John. Today we will unpack the resurrection of Lazarus. Have you ever found yourself questioning Jesus asking, "Where were you Jesus. I needed you!" I have been there and I know many of you have struggled through questions like this. Tragedy befalls us and we find ourselves questioning God's goodness, His sovereignty, His love for us, and possibly even whether He is actually God. If you have been there you are not alone and our passage in John 11 today speaks to this tension in your soul. So my prayer is this morning God would meet with you and help you see that He is the resurrection and the Life, that he is our messiah who conquered death so that we might have eternal life!

Have your ever been hangry, so hungry that you find it hard to even be kind to those around you? While we often think of our physical bodies experiencing hunger, rarely do we think about the spiritual hunger that screams within us to be satisfied. Our desire for justice, our longing for joy, our craving for peace, that overwhelming ache within our soul to be fully known and fully loved is spiritual hunger. All too often we think we can fill this hankering in our soul with things from this world: money, sex, relationships, family, power, security…but they are all broken cisterns, able to fill a little but ultimately leaving us feeling vapid and empty. In today’s text Jesus invites us to feast on the bread of life which is the only bread that will never leave us empty again.

Romans is widely considered to be Paul’s greatest letter, his magnum opus if you will. In no other place does Paul so clearly lay out the Gospel and its implications for life. Within Romans, Romans 8 is widely considered to be this letter’s greatest chapter, in fact, many pastors (including myself) consider Romans 8 to be the greatest chapter in all of Scripture. Why? Because in it Paul unpacks the glorious freedom we have in Christ by the power of the Spirit.
Today as we open up God’s Word we are going to be finishing the book of 2 Timothy. As we do we are going to see how Paul ministers to the body in a gospel community while on mission. Paul rarely served for very long at any location but he knew that the length of service at any one place wasn’t as important as how that service was done. As we leave today it is my hope that we would leave focusing more on serving in our gospel community with love, care, and support for one another.
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." This quote is attributed to Jim Elliot, but could just have easily been uttered by the Apostle Paul. When we have given our lives to Jesus we have eternal live which we cannot lose, we eagerly look forward to the crown of righteousness that is ours in Christ Jesus. This truth should propel us to radical sacrifice for love of Jesus, not to earn eternal life, but because it is already ours. When we truly love Jesus, we will surrender our lives as a drink offering, we will pursue the course he has for our lives, we will fight the good fight, and we wukk hold firm to our faith in all circumstances because our faith is at the center of our identity.
This morning we conclude a 2 part sermon we started last week. This morning we will focus on how the Word of God is able to transform us and make us ready for every good work. My hope is that as we finish this morning your love for the Word of God would be increased and that we all would continually feast on the Word letting it infiltrate every aspect of your life, guiding and directing us in the ways of righteousness. That we would put away any worldly voices in our lives seeking to replace God's all-sufficient and eternal Word with temporary worldly opinions and trust in God's wisdom above all else.
Happy Mothers day! It is a privilege and a joy to get to serve alongside so many wonderful moms in our church. Today we will be diving in to 2 Timothy 3 and unpacking how those around us influence us, especially those in positions of leadership in our lives. I am struck particularly by how Paul states to Timothy "from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." Timothy did not seem to have a father who was pointing him to Jesus, but his mother and grandmother poured the truth into him from the time he was a baby. Lois and Eunice are prime examples of what gospel empowered motherhood looks like! Lets follow their example and pour the truth into our children!
Pastors and elders have the great privilege of getting to help shepherd the flock of God. This is one of the most wonderful and joy-inducing roles a person can take on, but it is heavy responsibility. The enemy wants nothing more than to see the church fail; therefore, ensnaring church leaders in sin is one of his highest priorities. Paul knows this, and is writing to help Timothy navigate the difficult terrain that pastoring can be. But this message isn't just for Timothy and other elders, it is for all of us. Remember from 1 Timothy 3 that elders are meant to be men who exemplify the character all of us are to be living out. They are to lead by example in faithful teaching, living, and caring for others.
Are you a forgetful person? I know that I am! I am constantly forgetting where I put things, people's names, and even what I am actively doing. In today's text Paul exhorts Timothy to "remember Jesus Christ." Paul is not exhorting Timothy to remember Jesus in the objective sense, but rather remember Him in a relational sense. We are regularly tempted to forget just who Jesus is to us, to forget what our relationship to Him means for us in this life, and instead of living as heirs who will inherit eternal life and reign with Jesus, we live as orphans. Why? Because we forget Jesus Christ. This morning let this text from God's Holy Word help you remember who Jesus is and who you are in Him!
This text is a call to action, a call to guard the gospel, invest the gospel, and entrust the gospel to the next generation. All of us who are in Christ are called to this work, we are called to make, mature and mobilize disciples to the glory of God in kodiak and around the world. This morning as we talk through this idea of entrusting the gospel to the next generation I want you to ask yourself who God may be calling you to invest in for his kingdom.
Gospel-centered friendship is one of the sweetest gifts we can give one another in the body of Christ. But what is Gospel-centered friendship? How is it different than world friendship? How can I participate in this sort of friendship? How can I participate in this sort of friendship? As we unpack the beauty of how Onesiphorus blessed his friend Paul, we will see how we can bless our friends to the glory of God.
This morning we will open up the book of 2 Timothy and I cannot wait for you to feel the weight of this little book. This book is small, but it punches about its weight class. Their morning we will talk through what a bold and unashamed faith looks like and how we might live it. My prayer is that as we walk through this book, Jesus would saturate our lives to overflowing, that He would radiate your faith in all situations for the Glory of God, that we might put away fear and let the Lord fill us with his power, His love, and a sound mind that comes from Him.
Good morning and happy Easter! I am so excited to worship with you on this resurrection Sunday. This morning as we worship our risen savior it is my hope that the Lord would stir you up and fill you to overflowing with the Holy Spirit. This morning from John 20 we are going to explore how following Jesus requires both rational and relational faith. To simply believe that He is the risen Son of God does not make you a follower of Jesus, even the demons believe this truth. No, it requires both rational belief and giving yourself to Jesus completely in mind, body, and soul. My prayer is that everyone would leave this message with both rational and relational faith in Jesus!
Today we will be diving in to the heart of the book of Hebrews. Hebrews is one of the most theologically sophisticated books in the bible, but don't let that throw you, this book packs a punch. This was likely a sermon delivered to a Jewish congregation, and is meant to show us how Jesus is better than everything else, and since he is better lets fix our eyes on Him, following Him even in the face of danger, reproach, and pain. In Christ we have something worth so much more than our lives.
be bringing the Word and I am genuinely excited to hear from him. Pray for him as he opens up this last section of 1 Timothy. I believe God is going to encourage, convict and edify us through His Word this morning.
I also wanted to invite you over the next 14 days leading up to Easter to join me on a spiritual journey of prayer and fasting. This is meant to be a time of spiritual renewal, hope, and joy and I would love to share this time with you. There are study guides in the foyer and digital ones will be made available online at our website. There will also be a short 5-10 minute podcast each day to accompany the study.
To take part in the 14 days of prayer and fasting please checkout our sister podcast "spiritual reset" on your podcasting app.
“Just turn it off and turn it back on again.”
I am so glad you are reading this. I believe God is going to use this study to grow us individually and as a church. What are we doing? We are taking the next 2 weeks to pray, fast and feast on God’s Word and to give ourselves a spiritual reset.
What is a Spiritual Reset?
It is meant to be a time where we turn down the noise of the world and amplify the voice of the Lord. To be a short season where we withdraw from distractions and draw near to the throne of grace. During this time, you will be invited to pray continually, fast regularly and feast on God’s Word consistently.
Who Should Use this Study?
This study is meant for people who have entrusted themselves to Jesus, as Lord of their life. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, this study would not only be tedious but also would likely make little sense to you, as it has been deliberately written to have its participants engaging with God directly. However, if you are reading this and want to be united to Jesus, you can give your life to him right now. Pray a prayer like this:
“Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that I deserve to be separated from you because of my sin. But I believe you are the son of God and I believe that you died on the cross for sinners like me. I believe you were resurrected, proving you have the power to save sinners like me. Jesus, I give myself to you body, mind and soul. I surrender to your Lordship and I will live for you alone! Amen”
If you prayed that just now, please reach out to me at matt@kodiakberean.com . I would love to follow up with you and walk you through what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
How to Use this Study
Set aside at least 30 minutes each day to engage with God’s Word and to pray. This may seem like a lot but with so many distractions in this world, slowing down and resting in Christ is one of the best ways that we can reset our souls. This is written as a morning Bible study with “Live It Out” prompts for that day. But I know some of you night owls will prefer the evening and I will encourage you to then use those prompts for the next day.
Each day you will be directed to:
I believe God is willing and wanting to do amazing things in and through you during this reset; let Him! The enemy will do his best to distract your mind, distress your heart, and destroy your joy during this study. DON’T LET HIM! Fight for faith! Don’t let this become a duty you feel guilted into; rather, let it be a life giving delight that you give yourself to. Don’t get down on yourself if you get behind, it happens to all of us. I am praying for
The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, this verse from 1 Timothy 6 is often misquoted and used out of context. Today we are going to unpack the corrosive effects of the love of money as well as the life-giving effects of complete contentedness in Christ. God has blessed us richly with riches beyond what most in the world could even dream, yet most of us don't think of ourselves as rich, in fact many of us spend time lamenting how poor we are. This message is meant is to wake us up to the reality that we might be blind to our materialism, so that the Lord might cultivate godly contentedness in us.
-Matt
Timothy 5:17-6:2 helps us understand how followers of Jesus are to relate to authority. In a world where we are encouraged to disparage, doubt, and even rebel against those in authority over us, the bible has a radically different take. We are called to trust God by submitting to imperfect leaders and even honoring them. This is more than begrudging submission it is supporting our leaders in every way we can without supporting sin; to seek our leaders good and to support them as they do their best to the glory of God!
One of the most compelling things about our faith is its emphasis on compassion and care for those in need. But why do we emphasize this? Because at the core of our faith is Jesus, who saw us in our need and had compassion on us…showing us grace and mercy. So as followers of Jesus we do the same, having compassion for those in need, showing mercy, and extending grace to those who are in need. From the beginning God has shown extra care for those who are most vulnerable like widows, orphans, single moms, refugees, and persecuted peoples. Our goal is that as we follow Jesus our hearts will bend towards the vulnerable as well.
How can we grow in godliness? So many Christians through the ages have struggled with this question. Some have pushed the idea that we grow in godliness through severe self discipline. This approach to sanctification leads to self righteousness not godliness. Others believe in a passive “let go and let God” approach to sanctification. This doesn't work either, it created passive hedonists who feel powerless against their sin. So how can we grow in Godliness? Not by passivity or by severe self discipline, but by toiling and striving everyday to know Christ fully, love him deeply and glorify him completely. This will produce a transformed life that is full of joy and distinct from the world.
Have you been affected positively by a Christian leader? For many of us the answer is yes. At some point in our life an older believer poured into us, encouraged us, and helped us get unstuck. Sadly the inverse is also true, many of you have been negatively affected by a Christian leader at some point, whether it was through intentional malice, ignorant boorishness, or silent passivity, it is likely that many of you have been hurt by unhealthy Christian leaders. It saddens me that many of you have had to go through this, and it is my hope that as we unpack this passage today, the Word of God will give you the tools to recognize healthy Christian leaders.
Today we are diving into 1 Timothy 2:8-15. This passage is both complicated and controversial. It is my hope that as we teach through this passage, we can approach the text with open hands ready to receive the truth of Gods word. Laying down our presuppositions, and letting His word shape our thinking.
In this message Matt breaks down how prayer is essential to for a believers spiritual health and a churches spiritual flourishing.
In this message Matt unpacks Paul's second charge to Timothy. To fight the good fight, that is to fight to hold your faith with a good conscience.
Audio is rough at the beginning but gets better a few minutes in.
Today we start 1 Timothy, and I am so excited to dive into this book with you all! First Timothy is all about the gospel. It explores how the gospel leads to practical and visible change in believers’ lives. It is a book aimed at correcting error and abiding in the truth. Of all the books in the Bible it might be the most practical for grasping how the gospel shapes how we operate as a church. Moreover, Paul goes to great lengths to contrast the true gospel with the vain religiosity that had crept into the Ephesian church. The former produced the fruit of the Spirit while the latter produced controversy, division, and fruitless talk. It is my hope that as we study this book the Lord will produce good fruit in us!
At Berean we often say we are called to “make disciples, mature disciples, and mobilize disciples to the Glory of God.” But how do we do that practically? What does it look like in the real world. This passage in 1 Kings 19 helps us to see what discipleship looks like practically and how we all might be involved in it. It is my prayer that Berean would be a disciple making engine that sends out disciple makers into the whole world!
-Matt
Is depression and despair a sin? When a person is feeling depressed is it okay to seek physical help and therapy alongside spiritual things like prayer and the Word? There are so many questions like this that I hear on a regular basis, and while this episode in Elijah’s life does not explicitly explore all the intricacies of how we ought to interact with modern psychology it does give us helpful tools for understanding how God ministers to Elijah in his despondency. God ministers to the whole person, he cares for him physically, he interacts with him therapeutically, and he ministers to him spiritually. In doing so he pulls Elijah out of the bog of depression that was seeking to keep him stuck and sinking.
in this message on Verses 9-13 of John 1 we are going to talk through the new birth. What does it mean to be "born again"? This was the question Nicodemus asked in John 3 and it is a question that we all must wrestle with. Because it seems clear in scripture if we want to be followers of Jesus we must be "born again." So how are we born again, This text will help us unpack not only what being born again is, but also what its not. We will learn why everyone, religious and rebellious, moral and alike must be born again. Moreover we will explore how rebirth differs greatly from religion.
There is something about eyewitness testimony that is hard to ignore! Often in courtrooms eyewitness testimony is the difference between guilty and innocent verdicts. This is especially true if the witness is known for impeccable character. This morning we are going dig into the testimony of John the Baptist, an eyewitness of impeccable character, who openly testifies that Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John believed that Jesus was the son of God, and openly proclaimed him to be the Messiah. Why? Because John saw Spirit descend on Jesus and remain with Him with his own eyes. We too are witnesses of Jesus’s power: His power to save us from our sin and to baptize us with the Holy Spirit.
I love training montages, nothing motivates me more to get out and try to do something hard than watching Rocky Balboa punch sides of beef and chase chickens! Even hearing the Rocky theme song makes me want to go for a run. Today we get to look into God’s training grounds for one of his most fruitful prophets. But here is what is so cool, though Elijah was fruitful and a part of some extraordinary miracles...Elijah was ordinary. The Bible tells us that he was a man with a nature just like us. (James 5:17) So how did God train up this ordinary man? 1 Kings 17 is Elijah's training montage and in it we are going to see how God’s boot camp is unlike any other.
Today Eli Griffin (our pastoral intern) will be bringing the message. He will teaching through the first passover. As we explore how God saved the Israelites through the substitutionary sacrifice of the passover lamb, we will see how Jesus our perfect passover lamb sacrificed himself so that we might be saved from the just wrath of God.
In today’s passage Jesus gives his disciples a new command. To love one another like Jesus has loved them. This might be the hardest command Jesus gives. Why? Jesus’s love for the disciples is selfless in nature, sacrificial in application, unbreakable in its security, unending in scope, unrestrained in affection, and unsearchable in its vastness. How can we love each other like this? What would it look like if we began to resemble this in our love for the body of Christ? I believe that when we begin to comprehend gods love for us, we will be filled to bursting with the "the fullness of God”. Only then, when we are overflowing with gods love, can we begin to love each other the way Jesus loves us. So let us glut on God’s love for us.
Have you ever felt guilted into serving? Maybe a pastor, or a ministry leader presses you to serve, so you serve, but not from a place of joy but from a place of avoiding feeling guilty. On the flip side have you ever gotten so wrapped up in serving that your identity is subsumed by it? Instead of finding your identity in Christ alone, you find your identity in serving. Both of these types of serving are something Paul the apostle warns us about in Galatians. In this message Matt unpacks how to serve in a different way, how to serve each other by the power of the Spirit. Spirit empowered service is both joy-filled and life-giving. When we pour ourselves our for God’s glory and others’ good, when our hearts will swell with joy, and the body of Christ will flourish.
Today we are going to explore Galatians 5:25 - 6:5. One theme you will see repeated in this text is the danger of being "honor hungry." When we are honor hungry we get our sense of validation from how much glory we receive from others. Our life is spent in pursuit of personal honor and glory. We feel powerful and strong when we are doing better than other people, and we feel pathetic and weak when we are doing worse than them. In this passage the apostle Paul is inviting us to live in a different way, not feeling puffed up or deflated, but having secure joy that frees us from the comparison game.
Forgiveness is easy to understand and hard to enact. In our passage today Paul exhorts us to put away all the worldly ways of dealing with offense, and to put on a new way of dealing with hurt, a Christ honoring way of processing offense. A way that doesn't ignore or excuse hurt, a way that doesn't demand recompense or restitution, but rather a way that resembles our savior who sacrificially gave of himself for us while we were still his enemies. But how can we do that? Only by looking to and trusting in Jesus, and letting The Spirit empower us can we freely give costly grace to those who have wronged us.
At the heart of this text is the exhortation to confess to one another and pray for one another. But why confess, if Jesus has already forgiven me, and why pray for others of God is sovereign all things? What good can interpersonal confession and prayer do? This morning we will seek to answer these questions and more as we unpack James 5. Confession is an antiseptic for the soul and prayer changes things, bringing healing spiritually and sometimes physically, for the Glory of God.
We are all called to live every day ready for Jesus to return, like a watchman waiting on a wall. But as we wait it is easy to grow comfortable, drowsy and even to "fall asleep" on duty. That is why in this passage Paul is exhorting us to come alongside one another helping to strengthen one another so that we might live ready. Paul tells us we do this by instructing the wayward, encouraging the disheartened, and holding fast to the weak and broken. This is how we all might live ready for Jesus return.
Over the last 50 years our culture has slowly forgotten how to live in community. Over the last 5 years the atomization of people has only accelerated with more than 50% of adults saying they feel lonely, alone, or disconnected. Most of us crave deep connection to others but do not know how to cultivate it. That is what this series is all about, teaching our church to be a thriving community that has spirit filled fellowship and that helps everyone in the body of Christ to flourish. There is a real temptation in our day to come to church services and never get engaged in biblical community, but this concept is foreign to the Bible. Jesus called us to be a part of a Body, a faith family, and it is in community that our faith will flourish.
In this message Matt unpacks the impact of confidence in the Lord on our lives. Many of us don't realize just how transformative the love of Jesus is for us, how it can not only affect our eternity, but transform our today. It is my sincere hope that as we walk through this passage we learn how to live confident bold lives for Jesus.
This morning Eli will be diving into deep issues like assurance, confidence, and walking faithfully in the Lord.
Do you ever struggle to believe God that that God will really forgive your sins? Does your heart regularly condemn you? All of us find ourselves from time to time questioning whether we are truly forgivable, whether we went to far for Gods grace to cover. 1 John is a letter meant fro strugglers like me and you and today as we unpack 1 John 3:19-20 we will learn how to reassure ourselves when our hearts are wanting to condemn us
Forgiveness is easy to understand and hard to enact. This is because it requires heart change, and our hearts are stubborn. In this message Curtis unpacks how we can forgive by the power of the Spirit.
As we finish the book of Jonah we will focus in on how God uses the vine, the worm and the wind to show Jonah his hard heart and invite Jonah to change. Jonah was stuck in a way of thinking that was destroying him from the inside out, causing him to devolve into anger and depression, ultimately resenting God. This will always happen when we see God’s commands as bad news to be obeyed, rather than good news to be enjoyed. When we find ourselves stuck in this way of thinking, we can praise God that like Jonah God sends vines winds and worms to transform our hearts.
As we begin to unpack the stunning and surprising conclusion to Jonah. Last week we saw a repentant King, and a relenting God this week we will see a resenting prophet. Jonah resents that Gods mercy and grace was being given to those he despised. And through a vine, worm and wind God exposes Jonah’s wicked heart and shows Jonah his compassionate heart. Jonah fell into the same mistake many of us do namely the a mindset that says “compassion for me, and judgement for thee.” Let us pray that our hearts would be conformed to Gods heart which is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.
Jonah 3 is a story of repentance. Repentance always starts with faith, the Ninevites believed God’s word spoken through Jonah. More than this faith causes sorrow over sin. We see this in the Ninevites mourning over their sin and putting on sackcloth. True repentance doesn't just lead to sorrow over sin, but to a turning from sin and a turning to God. This is exactly what the Ninevites did in fasting, praying and seeking God’s mercy. Like the Ninevites, all of us deserve gods wrath, but we can obtain grace by repenting and turning to Jesus.
Questions For Reflection:
How does knowing “Salvation belongs to the Lord” help you to evangelize boldly?
Who in your life has God sent you to to proclaim his word? How will you reach out to them this week? What are you praying for in their lives?
Fear, shame, self interest or unbelief are all things that keep us from obeying God, which one do you struggle with most
Where do you need to truly repent in your life?
As we continue our series in Jonah we have finally reached the the most famous part of the story of Jonah (him being swallowed by a fish). But, this section of scripture is about way more than a fish…its about grace. At its core grace is the idea that the un-obligated gives to the undeserving. Anything short of that is not biblical grace. In Jonah 2 we see God’s grace on full display, Jonah is completely undeserving of mercy, and God is completely un-obligated to show him mercy but in a divine act of grace God shows his steadfast love to Jonah, sending a fish to save him.
As we continue our series in Jonah we will be talking about fear. This section of Jonah is what theologians call an inclusio, it starts with fear, talks about fear in the middle and ends with fear. Whats interesting about it is that at each juncture they seem to be afraid of something different. As first the sailors are afraid of losing their lives, later they are afraid of Yahweh’s Wrath, and finally they Fear the Lord. In exploring these different types of fear we can learn something about our hearts and the heart of God.
As we continue our series in Jonah we will be delving into the tempest that changed Jonah’s direction. It’s easy to see storms in this life as punishment for sin, to think God is angry at us. But what if the storm isn’t meant to pay you back for sin, what if the storm is meant to bring you back to him…. Then the storm isn’t proof of Gods anger, no its proof of Gods love for you and I. The storm hurled at Jonah was not wrath but mercy. And for followers of Jesus the difficulties of Life are never storms of wrath, rather they are tempests of mercy. They are a sign of Gods relentless love for you and I, stopping at nothing to bring us back into right relationship with Him.
We are kicking off a series on Jonah. Jonah is one of the most known and least understood books in scripture. When most of us think of Jonah we think of the big fish, or we think of VeggieTales and the pirates who don’t do anything. But rarely do we actually grasp what this book is about. Jonah is unique among the prophetic books of the Bible because Jonah barely does any prophecy. Like his contemporary Hosea, Jonah’s story is meant to point you to Yahweh’s heart. As we see Jonah’s self righteous and wicked heart exposed we see God’s relentless love pursuing him. No, Jonah isn’t a story about a fish, the Ninevites, or even Jonah, its a story about God and his heart for broken humanity. So, as we dive into this short little book this summer my hope is that our hearts are melted by God’s relentless love for prodigals and pagans like you and me.
In this final part of our healthy church series we will be diving into what it means to be mobilized to Mission. God has called all of us to live as “sent ones”, taking the good news of the Gospel with us wherever we go and sharing it in word and deed. But why do so many of us struggle to live as ambassadors? Why is it that 90% of evangelism is done by 1% of the church? There is obviously a breakdown somewhere between God’s commission and our living. Today we are going to explore that and talk through how we might “live sent”.

In Haggai 2, God is reminding Zerubbabel that a day is coming when God will shake the nations; there is a day coming when he will make everything right, and mete out perfect justice on the earth. For those of us who are in Christ, that day will be glorious! So, as we struggle today through any frustrations or suffering in our circumstances, let's live our lives in the light of that day!
Why do we do what we do? This is one of the harder questions we can ask ourselves, because often as we peel back the layers of our motivation, we see parts of ourselves that we would rather not see. In this message, as we focus on Haggai's message, we see God asking his people to genuinely peel back the thin veneer of their service and look at their hearts, asking the question, why are you really serving the Lord? There can only be one good answer to that question!
Today’s passage in Haggai 1 is the type of passage the Puritans would have written a whole book about. I am excited to see how the Lord uses His word to grow and shape us for His glory. I genuinely believe today will be transformative for many of you, as the Spirit stirs you to action.
We've all had moments where the pieces of the puzzle just don't seem to fit together correctly, and what we know about God doesn't match what we see happening in the world around us. We might even question, "God, how can you use this method for good in my life?" The prophet Habakkuk was in this same kind of situation.
This week, we'll be tackling how we should approach God when situations seem perplexing, when we can't make heads or tails of God's decisions. Through the model of the prophet Habakkuk, we'll learn how to approach God with hard situations and what to do while we wait for an answer.
We've all been there: the droughts of life where we think that things are harder than they should be. Seasons when our worst fears become reality. Times when we're tempted to think, "Does God really love me?" or "Does God even care?"
This week will shed some light on what God is doing during these dark times, and though we're not able to answer the question, "God why are you allowing this suffering?" we will be able to answer another, more important, pressing question: "God, what are you teaching me through suffering?"
