A sermon on 1 Kings 22 preached during the Sydney lockdown in late 2021. The preacher is Rev Richard Lane
This is a reflection on the life of John Stott. The material comes from the biography by Timothy Dudley-Smith on Stott and looks at the stance that Stott made during WW2 as a pacifist and preparing for ordination. A key text near the end of the recording is Luke 12:49-52. The speaker is Richard Lane. I have looked at the life of John Stott in a few devotional recordings which are on the YouTube website for St Stephen's Bellevue Hill.

Sermon on Genesis 15 preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 9th January 2022. This was the start of a series on Genesis 15-22 (picking up from where the church left off in a previous series). The speaker is Richard Lane.
This sermon is on Genesis 20-21. The actual sermon does not begin until just after the 8 minute mark as it is preceded by the reading of Genesis 20-21 (there is a slight break in between at one point). The sermon was preached by Richard Lane at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 13th February 2022.
At the start of the sermon I express a difference of opinion with the general commentary and understanding of Genesis 20. I illustrate this by quoting from Kent Hughes' commentary. While I disagree with his opinion here, I want to underline here that my intention is not to be dismissive of his commentary which I have found immensely helpful in studying Genesis. My point is rather to highlight that I am 'going against the flow'. I have commented a little upon this in my blog 'Riding on the Clouds'. In short, while I am differing with the commentary of people like Kent Hughes, Dale Davis, Gordon Wenham and Iain Duguid, I do so with the utmost respect for these commentators whose writings I have found to be immensely insightful and illuminating in my understanding of the book of Genesis.
A sermon on Genesis 19 by Rev Richard Lane preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 7th February 2022
Can I be a Christian on my own? In this episode I reflect upon the assumption in Acts that believers meet together. I am considering it in the context of the early church, Revival 70 years ago, and our contemporary situation of the Covid pandemic where online church has been a regular part of our life in recent years.
In addition to the book of Acts, I reference these three books along the way: 'Sounds from Heaven' - by Colin and Mary Peckham (2004, p 99), 'Faith of our Father' by Dale Davis (2015, p 98) and 'Called to Be Church' by Anthony B Robinson and Robert W Wall (2006, pp 3, 29, 37). I also share an article about Online Church by Robinson from his blog (1 Feb 2022).
Speaker: Rev Richard Lane
This sermon on Genesis 17 was preached on Sunday 23rd January 2022 at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill morning service by Richard Lane. It is part of a series of sermons on Genesis (the Abraham narrative). Other sermons in this series can be found on the church website in the YouTube recordings.
The second episode expands upon the purpose of this series on Acts. The Fourth Century father, John Chrysostom, is quoted for an ancient perspective. Then some perspectives of Darrell Bock, John Stott and Tom Wright on these verses are shared. The speaker is Richard Lane.
In this episode Richard begins to look at the book of the Acts of the Apostles. This is the start of a new series in 2022 exploring the book of Acts.

A sermon on Habakkuk 1:1-2:5 preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 20th December 2020. Preacher: Rev Richard Lane
From Moab to Bethlehem, Wilcannia to Eastwood, this is a Christmas 2020 episode with an Australian flavour. Richard returns to JI Packer's work on the ESV Bible and begins with a discussion of the ESV 'word-for-word' approach in its translation and illustrates this by looking at Ruth 1:6 (return to Bethlehem). After this, the move is to the poet-preacher Wilfred Mailler who served as an Anglican minister in Wilcannia in the early 1900s and who also turned to Bethlehem when he wrote a poem entitled Christmas Eve. Mailler's mother was the first cousin of The Australian poet, Henry Kendall. The episode closes with a classic Australian story about the origins of the Granny Smith apple in Eastwood, as well as returning to the manger, to Moab and Balaam's Ass.

A sermon on Zechariah 3:1-10 (a prophet of 'Restoration' or 'Revival') preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 18th October 2020. Preacher: Rev Richard Lane
A sermon on Zechariah 1:7-21 at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill, an Anglican Church in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. The second in a series on the book of Zechariah. Preacher: Rev Richard Lane.
Small Correction note: at about the 25 minute point there is a reference to Psalm 99. The Psalm reference was meant to be Psalm 79.
This episode begins with Ray Ortlund Jnr's definition of Revival, and the plea and argument that Ray makes with respect to seeking for Revival. The historical segment of this episode is centred on the lead up to the Welsh Revival of 1904 and the prophetic word of Dean Howells in the 1902 December issue of Y Cyfaill Eglwysig (which was a monthly Welsh language religious periodical of the time).
A sermon on Zechariah 2:1-13 (a prophet of 'Restoration' or 'Revival') preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 11th October 2020. Preacher: Rev Richard Lane
in this episode I look at various definitions of Revival (Brian Edwards, Iain Murray, JI Packer). I then turn to Stuart Piggin's definition in his book 'Firestorm of the Lord'. I examine Stuart's discussion of the way Revival is connected to the concept of being Awake as described in Scripture in a passage like Mark 13.
A sermon on Zechariah 1:1-6 (a prophet of 'Restoration' or 'Revival') preached at St Stephen's Bellevue Hill on Sunday 27th September 2020. Preacher: Rev Richard Lane
In this episode Richard sets out the format for exploring the theme of Revival. The general shape will involve History - Commentary - Bible. In this episode that begins in NSW in 1864, then moves to the commentary of the historian, Dr Stuart Piggin, before closing with part of a sermon by Ray Ortlund on Isaiah 64:1.
This first episode introduces the subject of revival with reference to some words of the late JI Packer. The Rev Dr Jim Packer died in July 2020 and this opening episode is largely composed of a tribute written by Leland Ryken to the late JI Packer. While this may not appear to be linked to the theme of revival, this first episode is tightly linked to the following two episodes which expand upon the meaning of the podcast title 'Riding on the Clouds' and explain that link. As well, the teaching of Jim Packer on revival will form the substance of discussion in later episodes and so this tribute is all the more fitting. The main speaker presenting the podcast is Rev Richard Lane, an Anglican minister in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia. This podcast follows on from YouTube devotionals which Richard presented for his church members during the lockdown period. The writing and influence of the late JI Packer had been discussed in those later episodes and so this tribute also continues that presentation although it is introducing a new theme, namely, Revival.
This second episode continues a discussion about the title of this podcast 'Riding on the Clouds'. The discussion is between Richard and Emily and was recorded on 10th August 2020 along with the first episode. The date itself serves to provide insight into the gracious hand of the Lord, while the subject of grief and its connection with Revival is further explored. Excerpts from the book 'A Grief Sanctified' by the late JI Packer are read as the subject of Christian hope is presented in the midst of a world in which we experience grief. This hope is an implicit component of Revival which at its heart is the bringing of comfort to those who mourn for the kingdom of God. The main speaker is Rev Richard Lane who is an Anglican minister in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.
