Author and Behavior Intervention Specialist Je'Quita Zachary came through to serve notice to the world. In her debut book, "I Am Pretty," Author Je'Quita shares her story with us on how she works with students, mostly girls, to help them build stronger social and emotional learning skills to prepare them for success in school, home, and life.

"As I worked with my students, especially girls, I noticed many of them were very mean with the other girls. Most had a low self-perception and thought that if they would put others down, they could bring themselves up. I decided to write a book for girls that will promote self-love and the understanding that true` “prettiness” comes from the inside." -Author Je'Quita Zachary

Today on the BYOB Podcast, I’ll be reading a paper that I wrote in November 2014 which details how standardized tests have impacted the African American Community. The heated discussion over requiring students to pass standardized tests has been up for debate for decades. On one hand, many people believe that standardized tests are an advancement to the next level of education. Proponents like myself argue that standardized tests are widening the academic achievement gap for African Americans.

Amber is a nine-year Marine Veteran, with a heart that drives her to pursue change. As an activist within the community of Lima, Ohio. She is driven by women’s rights, minority injustices, and advocating for children. Amber Basares, the author of Dear Rowland and Gavin-Keith, uses her experience with divorce and fighting for parental rights to drive her activism for women’s rights. "I Missed the Deadline" is a poem that I did literally begging the cops to stop killing us. It details my experience with having the police called to my hotel room on 9/12/2021. It was one of the most horrific events of my life and I channeled the experience through poetry.

I didn't have much words other than these spoken words. The experience was painful and antagonizing, and I never want to live through it again. I can still feel the tears and the panic attack that I had in their presence. I never thought that I would have to thank a cop for not killing me, but I beat the charge and walked away and finished my poem for @girltalk.me poetry slam contest. Listen now! This day was HARD. I chose my hard.

I walked away from police, laid on the sidewalk and prayed and cried. I fasted my way out, and thank God I am still alive today.

The black author expo has been moved to a virtual location to reach more viewers! Thank you to those who were willingly going to travel from

and more to little ol' Douglas.

Why I chose to go virtual:

When I thought about how far Douglas, GA is from the area that Kendrick Johnson was murdered, I discovered that it's better to go online anyway. I thought of all the unresolved murders and the way that I stood on the corner with the confederate flag, or how I would walk to class in Georgia across from the KKK!

So here's to making reading cool again all around the world!
