Stories of life growing up on the shores of the Hudson River. From an abundant treasure trove of stories gathered from life, children, Shakespeare and other great teachers comes a personal podcast of stories that weave the thread of this life back down through the ages and forward into the future. These are the stories I would tell my grandchildren if I ever had any. These are the stories I have shared with countless children – those who shared a time of learning with me as students, my own two children who love and tell stories of their own, and for Lu, who loved the “gory stories” best.
Thank you friends and fans! Here is my final episode. It is a reading of a play that I wrote that summed up my dating experiences with match dot com. It was headed for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2020 before all the shit hit the fan. It will be produced one day soon at a theater near me. I'll update you on that one day.
Thanks for sharing this wild ride with me!
Please check out my other podcast fckshakespeare. And look out for my new one in 2024: 60something
The second half of our African adventure in 2004 took us to the Skeleton Coast and the crazy landscape of Namibia. It was a landscape you might see in a Star Wars movie.
I am also announcing that this will be the next to last episode. I am moving on to other projects and I tell you a bit about that in this episode too.
Thank you for all your support and love!
Mom and I took the kids on safari in the summer of 2004. We went on a tented safari - much more rustic than those glamping affairs they have nowadays. It was the trip of a lifetime! We shared many hours of animal sightings and wonderful evenings around the fire under African stars.
As my spring kicks off with adventures in theater, I wrap up my wonderful adventure in Portugal. Porto, Barcelos, Evora, Monsaraz and finally Lisbon. It was a blessing to spend concentrated time with my eldest child. I am forever grateful!
One door closes and another one opens, right? At least I'm back in the saddle and rehearsing a play!
Also you'll hear tales of my explorations of Portugal - visits to Sintra, Nazare, and Obidos to name a few. Wonderful!
I took my daughter to Portugal for two and a half weeks and we had some wonderful adventures. Here is a recording we made together of an insane ride up a mountainside to a tiny remote village called Aldeia do Candal. We were inspired to tell the story on the spot, so it's raw and unedited, but I hope you'll enjoy the spontaneity of it.
OK, well, technically two, but also one. The relationship lasted one year and we made love twice in that time. It was completely uncharacteristic of me to hang in that long with an unconsummated affair, so I should have known it was not for me much longer before I ended it. But when we're in the middle of something we can't always see it clearly.

The Universe was sending me signals and temptations in the form of propositions from other quarters. Just when I was losing my mind with the intensity of a passion that was never consummated, I was being offered sex from many other sources. Would that solve the immediate problem? Or just make things more complicated?

Do you ever write letters that you don't send? Perhaps as a "rehearsal" for a tough conversation? I find it a useful tool, and these letters are folded up and stuck into my journals all over the place. Here are some I did not send and some I sent to Simon and what resulted from them.

I've been looking into European citizenship options, and recently learned that Italy would not work for me. This came as a shock. I always thought I would end up there somehow but now I have to come up with an alternative. Ahh, well. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Does anyone ever talk about a three-quarter-life-crisis? I examine that idea and also dip back into my mid-life-crisis. There was one moment there that was made glorious by an encounter with William Hurt. Whatever else might be said about him, he was a benevolent audience member and a fellow theater maker and I loved him for that.

As we kick off 2023 let's gently imagine what we want it to be. Perhaps we have been too aggressive in the past few years about insisting on change? Perhaps we need to be more peaceful about how we start this new year?
I am starting by jumping back and thinking about how I imagined my most passionate love affair would work out. That huge leap of the heart that I had engaged in at the end of 2002. In my imagination it worked out beautifully with respect and generosity. But of course I was only part of the equation...

Where did this tradition of New Year's resolutions come from and why do we continue with it when we know that we are most likely to fail? You know that "life imitates art" business people are always talking about? Well, I have often found that events in my personal life are amplified by whatever bit of Shakespeare's texts I might be working on at the time. It's spooky. Really. In the summer after her junior year of college, my mom decided that she wanted to see the country by taking a cross-country road trip... on a Vespa! In 1959, girls didn't do such things. It was an Odyssean voyage of perils and triumphs, and she told me this tale over a cup of coffee in her quiet suburban kitchen more than 60 years later. Yes, I had heard a small snippet of this story, but never the complete adventure. I was glad I asked.

Sometimes we are unaware of the foundations upon which we build. Both the physical structures - like my mom's house built on a cement slab which makes the whole downstairs freezing - and the philosophical foundations, like our beliefs and processes. My relationship foundations were rotten. I just didn't know it at the time. I've had more time to think now.

Every parent makes questionable choices for their kids in some way, and I think that taking my very young children to the Renaissance Faire in 2002 might have been one of those, but hey, in the grand scheme of things it was probably one of the least harmful. The Ren Faire became a big influence on us in that it gave us so many great ideas for our own productions. We made wonderful friends there and loved the whole time traveling aspect. I have great respect for those actors and I still go sometimes even though it has become big business now.

Welcome to a new season of The Bard of Hudson! It's been a year of podcasting, but in my timeline I'll be returning to the early 2000s with stories of dating in the early days of Match.com and many other haphazard and funny adventures. All along the way there will be discussions of current events, books, music and films that inspire me, as well as tales of the places that I am traveling to. I hope you are reminded of long-forgotten gems in your own life, or inspired to take new steps towards adventures of your own. Please share those discoveries and stories with me. Perhaps this season I will do some more interviews as well. I look forward to all the laughs, all the joy and all of the aha moments to come. Thanks for being here!

People often fall in love in love scenes. Look at Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. If that's too far in the past for you then how about Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie? You know what I mean anyway. So how could well-intentioned amateurs from a small community in the Hudson Valley hope to escape such attachments? The words of love scenes are so well written as to be very convincing, and when you speak them out loud... you're sunk.
This very thing was happening all around me as we started doing our first shows with the troop of adult actors that were aptly called The Strange Bedfellows. One of those pairings happened quite unexpectedly, but turned out to be totally perfect.

Some vignettes from the rest of my trip to Dubrovnik, including a visit to a strange tiny church in the town of Nin, and the mesmerizing sounds of the Sea Organ in Zadar. I was basically disappointed in northern Croatia, but you never know until you try. I returned to Dubrovnik on my last night and, after a wonderful final typical Croatian meal, I had a long hellish night. It was a rough ending.
In closing, Booking.com's customer service sucks. That is all.

I took a pause between writing residencies to visit Croatia. If you know anything about Dubrovnik, you probably know that it is the location for many scenes from Game of Thrones. So... I went on a tour. Hey, it was also an ideal way to hear a lot of the history of the city, right up until the present. I touch upon the Homeland Wars - a terrible conflict that happened just 30 years ago. Dubrovnik has certainly bounced back, and HBO has been a big part of that.

In some ways the neighborhood where I grew up as a child, Snedens Landing in Palisades, was very fancy and posh, and in some ways it was just a collection of friendly neighbors. Over the years there were parties that happened regularly for holidays where we could all go and be together at special occasions. Some of them were open to the whole community, and that felt so good to imagine that everyone in my neighborhood was a friend. Some of them were more exclusive, and some of those exclusions felt mean. In any case, they were always the source of much entertainment!

What is it about the mother-daughter relationship? Why is it so fraught with drama, so complicated? Is it a battle we must fight for the sake of evolution? Do we ever really change that much from generation to generation? I woke up after a mushroom risotto with many thoughts swirling in my head. Who better to bounce them off of but you, my tribe? My first Match.com date came around (pardon the pun), and I tried to approach it all with an open mind. I was 40, after all, and I wasn't imagining that wild, impulsive thrill of 20-year-old dating, but still... Turns out that Roy was one of those arrested development guys who was sophisticated when it came to cheese, but had some other less than ideal traits. Live and learn.

My kids and I were sopping up all the Shakespeare learning we could take. We visited the UK in the summer of 2001 and saw a production at the new Globe Theatre and another at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford.
Then at the end of the summer I gathered a group of adults who were also jonesing to learn more about Shakespeare and I formed a company of amateur players called The Strange Bedfellows. Hmmmm....

I spent my 40th birthday with people I had only just gotten to know during my few weeks at the Shakespeare & Company intensive (listen to the previous 2 episodes to hear the whole story). The day involved learning some stage combat techniques and this proved to be a very scary place for a lot of people. It was a day of wild ups and downs in many ways. The Intensive ended with marvelous performances from everyone involved, and I left there feeling like I wanted to do this work for the rest of my life.

The Shakespeare and Company intensive was challenging both physically and mentally and out of a group of 60 people who began it, only 57 people finished. One of those people who dropped out was my scene partner, and that was brought about because I stood up for myself and asked for what I needed. It was another huge learning milestone.

After two productions with my young company of players I decided that I needed a whole lot more training in order to raise the caliber of performances to a whole new level. I enrolled in a month-long intensive workshop with Shakespeare and Company in the Berkshires. This class was not only an extensive education in Shakespeare directing and acting techniques, but it made me a more complete and present human being. I will be forever grateful!

On the cusp on turning 40 many things were changing for me. One unpleasant thing I had to get through was my first mammogram, but it was there that a nurse opened my eyes to a whole new world. I had no idea that people used computers to find dates. Match.com was in it's primitive infancy in early 2001, but it started me down a whole strange and wonderful road.

When a marriage starts coming apart one wants to trace the steps that led there to see if there's a way to unwind the damage. Is there a threshold between fixable and broken where we can switch tracks and turn back? Moving is one of those huge life events that tests everything you're made of, and some of us were not passing the test. Even with two Christmas trees the new construction house we moved into didn't seem cosy. We discovered that we were bound to obey various rules set down by the neighborhood housing authority with regard to our garden decor. That did not go over well. All in all, I was struggling to accept my new environment.

Family vacations can't help but come with family drama, so I've again tried to figure out how it gets to me so badly. I don't know. Do we ever figure it out? If you have any insights please let me know.
But meanwhile in 1998, my kids were growing and learning about the birds and the bees and the lizards. So cute. Hope the cuteness outweighs the drama.

As your kids grow I think you start looking for ways to draw out the qualities that you value by offering them various activities to stimulate their enthusiasm. Dave's family was very centered on sports, so he made sure the kids started playing Little League and soccer from an early age. I wanted to make sure they got the balance of cultural instruction as well, but neither of them seemed all too interested in music. It was an ongoing exploration, the fruits of which might not show up for years to come.

The future is pulling at me. Where do I want to go next? What is my purpose now? Part of it is to tell this difficult piece of the past as simply and honestly as I can. It's 1998 in my narrative. I am back in the house that belonged to my grandfather where I used to visit every summer as a child. It is in a beautiful tiny town on the Italian Riviera. It is a place layered with memories from 50+ years, and yet, as it changes, it becomes vaguely unfamiliar in some ways too.
It is an incredible gift to be able to revisit these places that we treasure in childhood memories. We can look at them through the lens of adulthood and bring a new significance to various events and people who populate those memories. I'll be interested to see what bubbles up beyond the Proustian associations of various foods. I'm told some inner child healing might be possible. Stay tuned...

Amidst the darkness that is playing out on the shores of my home country, I also have a story from my past that wrestles with the trials of reproduction and fertility. I think that the ethics around that are unsound and that the whole area needs to be rethought. It will be a long battle I'm sad to say. I grieve for us all.
However, I am in a place of beauty and laughter and song, so I will also leave you with some of that. I hope that I bring you some cheer for a moment.

Americans are everywhere. Travel to Europe is on everybody's list this summer and I am running into my countrymen every where I go. These are the big communal events we all go through as families, and when you're married you get it from both sides. New babies balance out the older generation slipping away. If we can float above and look down we can see how it all balances out, but it seems intense while we're down on the ground and in the thick of it as I was in 1995.

Because parenting in early childhood is not busy enough, I kept a journal for each of the kids to have someday that told of their growing and which they could have one day when it meant something to them. Don't ask when I had time to do this. That is a futile question. But Dakota's journal is adorable, and here's a piece of it so you can judge for yourself.

As with all phases of life there is joy and sadness. While I was sharing my early motherhood with my grandmother and enjoying her attentions to my children so much we were among the first to hear about a terrible diagnosis that would eventually lead to her death. It's strange to know what will kill you. It gives you time to concentrate on the things that matter most, but it is also infuriating in it's steady march towards an end. I suppose all of us are living that way but just less consciously than someone who has a spelled-out prognosis.

In The Way of the Traveller, Joseph Dispenza says, "You are the hero of your own journey. Every time you leave home on a trip, you are embarking on a quest for self-knowledge. The spiritual provisions you bring with you are... a kind of insurance for the success of the trip on a spiritual level."
So I am consciously trying to leave behind the spiritual crap that is too heavy and hard to carry. I see others, people that I love, who have carried things far too long which have then turned into ugly lumps that they can't seem to let go of. I would like to age more gracefully.

My own little golden bear was growing like a weed, but I'm also including a side note about how I got to see Nicklaus win his last Masters tournament. These things just occur to me in the moment, so I'm going with it.
We took a family voyage to Italy when Dakota was only 2 months old and in some ways it was less challenging than I imagined, but in some ways the dynamics were shifting in ways I didn't appreciate. Life goes on, and the river ain't the same, I guess.

Do you believe that the position of the planets influences the big events in our lives? I think that astrology and Tarot and such help to shed light on our big questions and help us to see solutions and paths forward when we are struggling.
In 1991 I was in the midst of my Saturn Return, which is the time when the planet Saturn comes back to the very same place in the heavens where it was at the time of your birth. It brings huge upheavals, and forces you to level up in strengthening your foundational characteristics. That is what I was experiencing as I journeyed through my 30th year.

In the fall of 1991 I found myself pregnant with my second child. The news kicked off an exciting new chapter for my little family, but unfortunately it didn't reach my dad in time for his liking. My neglect in telling him sooner proved to be the last straw in our deteriorating relationship and he wrote me what would be his final letter, drawing a line in the sand that would never be crossed.

I'm picking up threads in my life that began way back in the past and are suddenly resurfacing to be carried on into the future in different form. As I recognize the origins of some of my impulses I feel strengthened in the certainty that I am pursuing the right course.
I'm also going to tell you about the origins of Savannah's creative life. It has taken many forms over the years, but it keeps coming back to some very early training she had at her grandmother's knee. Sounds familiar, right? It's a great place to start...

I have a bad habit of making things look easy to the casual onlooker. I think I'm making this whole move out of my house look effortless and fun, but in truth I am just pushing those big feelings away into some dark place to surface later. It's not healthy, but I'll think about changing that tomorrow. 😁
The Palisades Gourmet Club was a blessed haven of fun that helped me skirt around the thorny realities of my familial troubles. We formed this group to start exploring the foods of different countries and it soon mushroomed way beyond that into elaborate dinners with costumes and wines and slide shows. It was delightful!

He's the songwriter and lead singer of the band called The Grinders for which Annie and I sang harmony vocals in the late 80s and early 90s. My then husband, Dave, also played bass in the band, and you can hear him highlighted in the song Creature Features towards the end of the interview. Sprinkled throughout the interview are a number of our songs from the band's newly released CD, "Classics Remastered." You can find more music from the band on Spotify HERE.
I met Andy in 1980 when I moved into the Birdman dorm at Boston University, otherwise known as 90-92 Bay State Road. Reconnecting in 1985 and joining forces in this creative project ensured that our friendship would last for the rest of our lives. I am so grateful!
Traveling with children is always a crapshoot. In the days when I was a young mom there was not so much information and availability of tips on that, so we did the best we could to make travel safe and fun for little ones. Of course those unforeseen hazards and challenges pop out from nowhere and come in many forms - nasty coffee tables and highbrow expectations of how children should behave were among the pitfalls we negotiated in the summer of 1991.

I have never learned to be a calm and effective negotiator during personal conflicts. I don't think anyone in my family is a good example of this either. Whatever you are celebrating during this Easter-Passover time, I wish you growth and expansion and new ideas.
Our Easter traditions mainly center around the artistry of egg dying. That's what takes center stage when you have a family of artists. It has evolved to include many new techniques over the years, and the resulting egg hunt is always a delight when you see those creations nestled in a tuft of flowers or cradled in the crook of a tree trunk. This year, since we only have one "child," we're doing a reverse hunt and only the people over 60 get to hunt. I can't wait!

The experience of having twins is something I have no personal knowledge of, but I found a letter from my mom's partner Pat that laid out her trials as a new mom with two infants. I was having a very hard time trying to help her or understand her, so she took to writing me letters. Here is one of them from October of 1980.

One of the too many books in the stack that I think I'm going to be reading before I pack up the last of my belongings and head off for Greece is a book that illuminates the origins of words. I chose the word 'eliminate' today, since I am doing so much of that. It has to do with thresholds, and there are many of those that await me too. Perhaps we'll do a word-of-the-day for the few days remaining before I have to leave that book behind?

Life is full of huge thresholds to be crossed, with all the attendant trauma and joy.
I am in the midst of shifting from living with family to living alone for the first time in my life really. My living space has always included a place for my kids to be, but now that will no longer be true for the foreseeable future. More to come on that...
Meanwhile, here's the account of the birth of Patty's twins. I was there. It was an exciting threshold to cross and would prove to open up a whole new world for all of us.

Music came back into my life in the early days of my marriage in two forms. I was recruited to sing back up for a rock-and-roll band and also Annie and I started looking for a new singer so that we could refresh our old trio.
But by the time I was a new mom, all of these singing engagements suddenly necessitated finding some long-term babysitters. That is a tough threshold to cross - figuring out who to entrust with your precious child. I think your guardian angels have to work overtime when that stage begins.

WARNING: This episode contains mention of suicide.
Mid-pregnancy I thought I was rocking' it and had mastered the art of pregnancy. I was a pregnancy goddess! When I passed through the portal of delivery and found myself at home with this tiny bundle of messes I was back to square one. Ignorant and confused, by turns ashamed and furious that I didn't know more, I struggled to feed that poor kid and accomplish the most basic of tasks.
Then came a horrible piece of news that made any petty struggles irrelevant.

Having a child is, perforce, an act of hope and optimism. I am sad for so many of the 20 and 30-somethings of today who vehemently declare that they will not be bringing new life into this world. It means that they have lost hope for the future in some measure. Given the current state of affairs one can hardly blame them.
In 1989 the world was not so grim, at least not in my sunny corner. This episode is a small comparison of outlooks.

At the tender age of 27 I was getting ready to have a baby and thought I knew what relationships were all about. What hubris! I talk a bit about forgiveness here, and am very conscious that the person we sometimes most need to forgive is ourself. When people are about to cross a big threshold they often unconsciously try to destroy what they're leaving behind in order to be able to leave it. Teens do this when they are going off to college or moving out of the family home. Toddlers do it in a smaller way when they are testing their autonomy out in the world away from the arms of their parents. It is a fascinating pattern.
I am trying to be conscious of it as I close this chapter and prepare for my travels. I am trying to learn from past mistakes. With me luck.

Mom has always been a dog lover, but when she started volunteering at the saddest shelter ever, she brought home a couple of really weird ones.
At the same time, we stray dogs who kept wandering out to the country from the bustling metropolis of Hoboken would finally give in and decide to be the country mice we were in our hearts. Dave and I saw one house and made an offer, and it was ours. No complications. We knew what we wanted, and that was that.

My mom's new flame was an ardent fan of the movie Moonstruck. It became a running theme in our lives for the next decade or so, which added a humorous note at just the right places. As mom was trying to decide upon a more permanent partner, Dave and I watched from the sidelines, or sometimes from the rock face. That was during a brief foray into rock climbing as a hobby.

He's been an important ally through hard times and always a precious friend to me. There have been times when we've grown apart and then we come back together and the relationship knits up differently, but it is always a central pillar of my life. We share certain memories that no one else knows, and I am keenly aware of that as I unfold this story.
He saved me from a killer vacuum once. Don't turn your back on those. They will bite you when you least expect it!

As I struggled to figure out what my "calling" in life was, I threw myself into domestic bliss with a vengeance! And then took up therapy... 😏 Mom set me up with a therapist she was seeing because she, too, was caught between some intense extremes in the form of two very different women she was seeing. Interesting times...

After a whirlwind tour of all the golf courses in Bermuda, and endless repeats of The Girl From Ipanema, we went back to NY and "real life." We finally settled in Hoboken, NJ, home of Frank Sinatra and up-and-coming addendum to NYC. It was a good place to start.

I'm re-reading a wonderful book about writing by Anne Lamott entitled Bird by Bird. It's about deconstructing the process and seeing the steps contained therein. It made me reflect on the building blocks that have gone into constructing the life I have today.
I also had a sleepover with my college roommate, Ann. Such fun! Grownups should have sleepovers more often. We rarely have extended time to really get below the superficial stories and into the meat of our why's and how's. I recommend you try a sleepover with a friend.

In Tanzania we explored the Ngorongoro Crater and the incredible Eden preserved therein. Thousands of flamingoes flew overhead and a small pod of the last remaining rhinos munched under the watchful eye of protective rangers. I hope their descendants still thrive there.
Being in Africa certainly threw into stark relief the devastation that the human species has had on this planet. What if...? Impossible now to think of the alternative, but I felt that I glimpsed it there in Tanzania.

From spectacular landscapes with jutting mountains rising straight out of the river to dragon boat rides down the canal to towns where people came thronging out to the dock to welcome us, central China was magical. The next few episodes will be about my trip to China in the summer of 1983. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and I believe it was a unique opportunity to see China during a historically unprecedented transition. After Mao died in 1979, the country opened up to Western visitors in a broad way and it was a chance to almost walk through the past because there were few so-called modern conveniences and yet so much national excitement for the country to burst into a new era and catch up to its fellow super powers. Little did we know where that fervor would lead them...

Junior year heralded a new phase for me in that I started developing relationships with men in new ways. Before that it had been all playful and never serious, but somewhere in the fall of 81 that started to change.

More curious relationships developed during my junior year as new Birdmen moved into our dorm. We created a contest, whose rules were obscure to everyone, wherein we chose a "Birdman of the month" and featured his portrait over the face of a famous hunk. That was one way we spiced up life in room 304.

By the spring of sophomore year I was really settling in to this crazy new community I had happened upon. The Birdmen were a constant source of fun and joy, and a few stand out in particular. Our friend Chip satirized all dorm denizens in a once-in-a-while rag he wrote called Gathers No Moss (the name a tribute to the Rolling Stone Magazine that he loved so much). I include an excerpt here. Enjoy!

In the tiny hamlet where I grew up there were some odd and marvelous characters. One such was Marian Grey, an old lady who was both scary and fascinating to me as a small child. I only later found out that she was quite famous. Here is her story from my childhood perspective.

What will you discover in the next 10 years? When you have arrived at your last day, what will you look back on as your best moments? What will you regret not having done? In this episode I talk about the roads not taken and why. I recommend a book, The Four Hour Work Week, as a tool for helping you explore those roads... if you want. I talk about one thing I am going to make happen that I found out is not so unattainable after all.

Where am I coming from? Where am I going with this? I find that questions are my best tools for defining my path. And right now I am on a quest to define the next 5 years. Well, actually, that seems like a long time, but I don't want to succumb to "death of history syndrome" - we'll talk a bit about that. I broach a few subjects that we're going to delve into in the following weeks - pivoting, curiosity, loss of identity, origin stories... I'm on a mission! Join me.

What's the story, Gerry? Remember that silly ad? If not, you're not as old as me. That's OK. I am going to tell some of the stories from my six decades on this planet. Some of them will be about weird, long-forgotten stuff, and some of them will be suggest from modern life. I hope you'll find kernels of truth and inspiration along the way.
