Welcome back to My Seminary Life. We are picking things up after the break with ReOrientation; the special where we strip everything down and get back to basics, our pursuit of Jesus. For this year's edition, I sit down to look at Judges 3:12-31 at how Ehud delivered Israel from Moab and from it I challenge the common said phrase that "God works in mysterious ways." I think that statement does not represent how God works well and does damage to how we are to live. Instead, I reflect on how God works in unexpected ways and how Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of that.

We go back to 1930 when Bonhoeffer gave a eulogy for the prominent German theologian, Adolf Von Harnack. Death is an all consuming thing, like burnt offerings, or even new life. The vine and its branches are so intwined it's hard to tell when one starts and the other ends. Being united in Jesus' death and resurrection is a total process.

Here I breakdown that spiritual priviledge and abuse of authority do not look like people who worship and believe in Yahweh, or that they are following His Son Jesus. Instead, a life that looks at one's own resources and decides how to show the love of God to their neighbor by their means is a life that does believe.

Happy (early) Saint Patrick's Day!

Today, for our Fish FryDay devotional, we are taking a look at Rend Collective's newest song "The Prayer of Saint Patrick" inspired by The Prayer/Breastplate of Saint Patrick. After briefly recapping the history of Rend Collective and their recent campaign to "Make Rend Folk Again," I dive into the words of both the song and the prayer, look at their differences, and focus on the general message of these words that Jesus is in us and is our strength. As we travel through this wilderness, there will be times when hunger pains sit in, both literal and existential. The words of this prayer renew our mind to the reality that it is Christ in us our strength, not by our own might.

What is joy?
Welscome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode, I conclude our trilogy of CS Lewis episodes talking about how he understood the concept of joy. As I prepare, and partially rewrite, my sermon on Psalm 30, and with the Lenten season of introspection and grief ahead of us, I thought it would be good to set out to better understand what joy is. As we look at Lewis' some what mystical understanding of joy, and match that to Psalm 30 seeing it as a partial result of processing sorrow, we are left in a place where we are called to be in the moment of life rather than trying to chase certain feelings and specific outcomes.

Is there an ethical way to be thankful?
Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's Rabbit Trail, I recap my thankfulness sermons from November and ask the big question, can thankfulness continue to be thankfulness if you get something out of it? After recapping my sermons on Luke 18:9-14 and Psalm 138, I work it out defending the idea that having hope restored in your current situation is an ethical way that thankfulness can play out. I also introduce my purpose for thankfulness; Thankfulness is not a weapon of pride to knock others down, but a tool of humility to build other up, bring glory to God, and restore hope to our current situtions.

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode we are wrapping up Hymns of Christmas as we complete our journey through the birth of Jesus guided by our favorite Christmas hymns. Today's guides are Silent Night & Oh Holy Night. After recapping and taking a brief look at Isaiah 9:6, I talk about this important aspect to the good news of Christmas that Jesus is the Prince of Peace, the peace to whom God has given to those He has given His grace, the peace that Micah prophesized about. What does it look like to live at peace because Jesus is peace? How does the imagry of Silent Night and the social justice message of Oh Holy Night play a part in us understanding what it means to be at peace? Also, I look at the war and poverty surrounding one of these hymns, and the Unitarians are at it again with our second Christmas hymn today. Bonus, I wrap this whole series up in a nice little bow by quoting part of Dr. Maya Angelou's poem Amazing Peace.

Welcome back to My Seminary Life. Today in our journey through the birth of Jesus, our guide is Oh Little Town of Bethlehem & Once, in Royal David's City as we reflect on hymns of arrival. Last week on Hymns of Christmas, we looked at Micah 5:2-6, this week we jump some 800 years later to Luke 2:1-7 to see the fulfillment of Micah's prophecy that the eternal ruler would be born in Bethlehem. The arrival of the Messiah shows us that God is not restricted by our limited understand of our circumstances. When life gets chaotic and stressful, we are reminded that God can bring His purposes together.

Let's talk Hymns of Longing.
Welcome back to My Seminary Life. In today's episode, I introduce our new series Hymns of Christmas; we will be journeying through the birth of Jesus guided by our favorite Christmas hymns. Today, we start with Israel's longing for the Messiah, which began all the way back in the Garden. I walk through Micah 5:2-6 to show a prophecy that Israel could hold on to during God's silence during Greece and Rome's occupation. Israel longed for a Serpent Crusher Messiah who would save them from captivity, and the hymns Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel and Come Thou Long Expected Jesus capture that longing that Israel had.

What is Experiential Preaching? What's a Pie and Praise Fellowship?

This week on the show we have another Rabbit Trail. After reviewing my recent sermon on Hebrews 10:19-25, I sit down to answer the question, "how do I stir up someone to love and good works when they are so freaking annoying?" We all have "that person" in our lives that can be difficult to love, and social media wasn't a thing when this epistle was written. Also, how do I do all this while also setting healthy boundaries? Welcome back to My Seminary Life, and the start of a new series called Rabbit Trail. In this series, I will take you down a path that I wanted to go down in a recent sermon I preached but couldn't make it fit in my notes. In my recent sermon on Hebrews 11:1-3, I mention how there is a proper way to fear God. As our Summer School series on Cults continues, I am once again joined by author Christian Ashley of the Let Nothing Move You podcast to discuss a time when he was approached by followers of Mother God. Who watches the Watchmaker?

What does it mean to speak for the trees? Today we are beginning our month long series Celebrate March where in each episode I will be sitting down to talk about someone who was born in the month of March who made an impact on faith, religion, pop culture, and in some cases all of the above. In this episode, my wife Claire joins the show to discuss the Illumination film The Lorax based on the book by Dr. Seuss. We discuss the impact Dr. Seuss continues to have on children's literature and entertainment. We give our honest thoughts on Illumination and their impact on children's entertainment. As Lead Them to Worship comes to an end, I sit down to make some observations from a recent survey. In this week's edition of Lead Them to Worship, I am joined once again by Joe Dea of BuddyWalk with Jesus to discuss the relationship between AI and ministry. We discuss the popular saying among many Christians that when it comes to tech we should embrace everything because "it's just a tool to share the gospel." Joe briefly recaps the history of AI and how it became a household tool so quickly. We then discuss studying and preaching as worship, and how AI can be used in sermon prep and writing music, but how easy it is to abuse this tool and to reduce the worship we give to God. Did you know that at one point in time we as Protestants did not have a clear ethical stance on the sanctity of human life? Seems pretty impossible given the current climate, but not that long ago, Bonhoeffer set out in his book Ethics to formulate a clear ethical stance on the subject. This book, which spawned out of Bonhoeffer's experience with being the head of a small, illegal seminary in Nazi Germany, covers his reflections on what it means to live in Christian community together. From defining what community is and is not, to what a day together looks life, to alone time, and the importance of service and confession, Bonhoeffer molds a view of community that is not often popular in our modern context.

It's a small world after all! In this episode, we look at two prominent theologians during World War II, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and CS Lewis. Things are taking a dark turn in Germany in 1933. The Aryan Paragraph has been passed, removing those of non-Aryan descent from civil roles, and now churches are beginning to pass religious versions removing non-Aryan believers from churches and pastorates. In this episode, I discuss Bonhoeffer's response to this religious version of the Aryan Paragraph, and how partiality based on race or anything else divides wedges into the church that were never meant to exist. I also give some of my thoughts on how we as believers can continue to learn how to better love our neighbor who is different from us.

What's a catechism? Today on the Summer of Bonhoeffer, we go back to the summer of 1931 to look at a draft of a 39 question catechism Bonhoeffer and his friend Hildebrandt were working on for the Lutheran church at the time. In this series of questions and answers, we get a look into what was on the mind of Bonhoeffer for his people at that time, along with a couple surprising answers to a few of the questions. We also get a clear look at what Bonhoeffer thinks the true church is.

As we draw Apologetics 101 to a close, I sit down with Pastor Scott Erwin of Bethel Church in Hobart, IN, to discuss how to navigate the topic of apologetics with teens. Sometimes we like to through the word "cult" around to describe anything that we think may be toxic or misleading in their teachings. However, the word "cult" does mean something specific so it is important that we understand what a cult is. In today's episode, I run down five key characteristics of a cult with examples from the history of cults. I also wrestle with what to do if you meet someone who is a part of a cult and the difficulties that may present to share the gospel with them. The existence of God is one of the big discussion questions in the world of apologetics. How can we know that there is a God out there?
