The prophet Elisha is surrounded by hostile Syrian forces and yet is completely at peace. Why? Elisha sees what most don't. The prophet is aware of God's angel army that has surrounded his adversary. This story demonstrates God's deliverance in those huge, crisis moments of our life. This doesn't mean that God always keeps us from trouble, but is PRESENT with us in the trouble! In the latest message from the "Peaks & Valleys" sermon series, Pastor Joey looks at a simple story in 2 Kings 6 about a lost axe head. It seems incredibly insignificant, but not to the one who had borrowed the axe in the first place. In urgency, this man runs to Elisha and pleads for help. As a result, God miraculously makes the iron axe head float. At first glance this text looks unimportant, but we learn that NOTHING is beyond God's care and concern. 2 Kings 5 is a relatively familiar text as we get to Naaman and his unconventional swim in the Jordan River, resulting in his healing of leprosy. But as we look deeper, we discover a lot more! Naaman has to swallow his pride in order to discover physical healing. And as a result, he also finds faith in the God of Israel. In contrast, Naaman's servant is driven by greed, dishonesty, and selfish desire. In the end, Naaman is blessed and Gehazi (the servant) is cursed. It's amazing how many miracles and teachings in the New Testament are foreshadowed in the Old. In this text from 2 Kings 4:38-44, Pastor Joey emphasizes that Jesus is the Bread of Life (see also John 6) that is pictured in the manna of the Exodus, the miracles here of the soup and the bread, and the feeding of the 5,000 in the gospels. God uses Elisha to redeem the deadly soup (also redeeming the labor) in the first short story. Then he uses the prophet to provide basic provision to the prophets and the people in a miracle that is very similar to the miraculous feedings by Jesus. We learn of God's sufficiency and provision here. Nothing in our life is unredeemable when Jesus steps onto the scene! What do we do when life throws us a curve? In reality, our life is really not in our hands. Contrary to Bon Jovi's "It's My Life", our life is at the disposal of the Sovereign God of the universe who orchestrates everything according to His good, pleasing, and perfect will. In this message we look at a story that is roller coaster of emotions of life, death, and resurrection... a clear picture of the Gospel for sure! The story teaches us to lean on God amid the joys and sufferings of life, knowing that God is working all things together for good, albeit maybe not our initial understanding of good. In a very similar story to Elijah's interaction with the widow of Zarephath, 2 Kings 4 gives us a picture of God's SUFFICIENCY and PROVISION amid an incredibly desperate moment. One of the prophet's wives approach Elisha needing God's help after her husband's sudden death. What is at stake is the freedom of her children and ultimately life for the family. The prophet instructs this widow to a unique and private miracle. It doesn't make the headlines of the local news, but it does provide both MERCY and God's GRACE. Of FIRST IMPORTANCE. Paul spoke in these terms in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 as he clarifies the core weekend of the gospel story when Jesus died, was buried, and rose again! So many sermon titles apply here.... "A Tale Of Two Cities", "To Kill A Mocking Boy", or even "The Bald And The Beautiful". In this text we see the transition of the prophet's influence, from Elijah to Elisha following the former's mysterious departure. In two unique interactions, Elisha brings a blessing upon Jericho and then a curse upon Bethel. Jericho sought God's favor and Elisha purified the water. Bethel's boys mocked God's prophet and likely lost their lives. The narrative depicts two choices. Do we honor God, His Word, and His prophet or do we scorn them? Some people make an impression when they walk in a room AND some people make a greater impression when they exit. In this case, Elijah's ending is far more memorable than his beginning. In this ninth message from the "Peaks & Valleys" series, Pastor Joey looks at 2 Kings 2 and the "Pyromaniac Prophet's" unusual last day. This text highlights a test that Elijah gives to Elisha that emphasizes the strategic and persistent discipleship process. Also, Elisha's request to his predecessor/mentor emphases the importance of the Holy Spirit's empowering to accomplish the gospel purposes in life. We desperately need the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and empower us to faithful ministry. We witness a beautiful relationship between two faithful witnesses as the mantle is passed in ministry. Elijah is the "pyromaniac prophet", or so it seems. An an encore to Mt. Carmel's showdown, we find our prophet confronting Ahab's son, Ahaziah, in 2 Kings 1. After having fallen out a window, the new king of Israel is injured. Instead of inquiring of God about the condition, however, Ahaziah chases another god (Baal-zebub), a local derivative of Baal worship. God is not pleased, and it ultimately cost Ahaziah his life. In the midst of these interactions, Elijah calls down fire AGAIN and consumes two separate garrison's of troops. In this text we discover gospel glimpses of humility vs arrogance, God's mercy and kindness, as well as his harsh judgment on the wicked. Greed is a nasty sin. It reveals our dissatisfaction with God and His provision and our tendency to chase idols. In this message from the "Peaks & Valleys Series", Pastor Joey takes us to 1 Kings 21 as we look at story of greed, injustice, and confrontation. We see again how God uses Elijah to confront the wickedness of Ahab. We also witness God's patience and kindness even amidst Ahab's incomplete repentance. The purpose of God's confrontation with evil is to bring conviction, leading to repentance (not just sorrow), and ultimately reconciliation. There is an unfortunate stigma around depression in the church. For some proud reason, we pretend that we don't struggle with mental and emotional health, for it might make our faith look weak. In this message from the "Peaks & Valleys Sermon Series", Pastor Joey looks at Elijah's run from Jezebel, and subsequently his ministry. As a result of unrealized expectations, the prophet spirals into despair and pity. But all the while, God lovingly nurtures him, challenges, and restores him. 1 Kings 18 is easily one of the most iconic moments in Israel's history. Atop Mount Carmel there is an epic showdown between Elijah and Ahab, God and Baal. If you like a little sarcasm, it's present here. If you enjoy decisive moments that altar the cultural landscape (if for just a moment), you will find it here too. There are times when we all need to make reject indifference and make a decision to follow God, whole-heartedly without reservation. Idolatry (all sin) stems from a dissatisfaction with God. Are you a troublemaker? We likely can identify with that title at some point in our life. In this second message from the "Peaks & Valleys" series, Pastor Joey steps into the beginning of one of the most dramatic moments in Israel's history. The preparation of Ezekiel in 1 Kings 17 has positioned the prophet for boldness and faith in 1 Kings 18 and the infamous showdown on Mount Carmel. Elijah comes out of hiding to confront evil Ahab. Ahab attempts to redefine good and evil, blaming Elijah for the current drought and famine. However, the prophet makes it clear that sin and rebellion are the culprit. Elijah was just a common man like us (James 5:17), but God worked in and through this prophet in enormous ways. As we begin the "Peaks & Valleys Series" in 1/2 Kings, we discover an obscure prophet called by God, emboldened by His Spirit, and.... in training. We see how God hides Elijah away for a season of waiting, of preparation that is vital to his character development and faith. Oftentimes we fight against the times of waiting, thinking it is a waste of time. But oftentimes this season equips us for the greater work. This is why PATIENCE and PRAYER is vital in the waiting. Joy is a funny word. Most people think it has something to do with emotions and happiness. But joy is independent of happiness and emotions. It is a conscious decision that is anchored in an unwavering faith in Christ, regardless of circumstances around you. On that Judean hillside, the angel announces "good news of great joy", the gospel proclamation, to some unexpectant temple shepherds. This joy was not just for these favored few, but for all who would place their faith in this baby boy for their eternal salvation. Joy is a distinctly Christian decision. Matthew and Luke aren't the only Christmas narratives. If you look deeper, John's prologue (John 1) gives us a deep insight into the incarnation (God becoming flesh). One of the most profound elements of this arrival is the MOTIVE for which Jesus comes. The second week of Advent highlights this. Love is what drives God to give. The deepest darkness can often be found right before the light. As we begin the "Christmas Lights" sermon series, Pastor Joey looks at the gloom and anguish of Israel in the 8th century BC as the glory years have faded and both Israel and Judah (soon) would be in exile. Darkness leaves little room for hope. But God is not finished yet. The prophet Isaiah records this powerful birth announcement, giving light and HOPE to a people who needed something to look forward to. Today, we need this same hope. It's not found in material things, politics, sports, or human relationships. Hope is a Person. His name is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He is Jesus! In this finale of the "Standing Firm Series" in 1/2 Thessalonians, Pastor Joey looks at Paul's admonishment to WORK. Work is a gift from God, part of His purpose for humanity. As believer's we are to set the example for our culture in our work ethic. Idleness, laziness, the attitude of entitlement, and a victim's mentality does not reflect the Ephesians 2:10 picture of the believer as one who is "God's workmanship" and set apart "for good work". In this simple text, Pastor Joey looks at Paul's encouragement of the church in Thessalonica that can be viewed through three sets of doubles. Paul gives two prayer requests, followed by two reasons for confidence, and finally two blessings. And believe it or not, Pastor Joey finally preaches a shorter message (probably because there is Thanksgiving food involved afterwards). A finite mind cannot conceive an infinite God. He is other than us, mysterious in His ways, and beyond comprehension. This truth is important, particularly as we attempt to understand the biblical Doctrine of Election. In this message, Pastor Joey tackles the hard, but biblical words like foreknowledge, choice, predestination, and election from this text in 2 Thessalonians. The only way to reconcile these challenging words is the Sovereignty of God that works in and through the process of an individual's salvation. Salvation is fully the work of God, a gift from Him alone. But a gift MUST be received. This is where faith, the choice to repent and believe, comes into this moment. These truths shouldn't leave us afraid of these hard words, but actually give us great comfort that the God who accomplished our eternal salvation is both powerful enough and faithful enough to keep that salvation! The only way to live in truth is to love the truth! In this message from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Pastor Joey looks at the vital importance of TRUTH in an ever-increasingly deceptive world that is manipulated by Satan. The text speaks of the Return of Christ, the Rapture, and the "Man of Lawlessness" (the Anti-Christ), but it also emphasizes the importance the absolute truths of God, God's Word, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For believers, we need to be discerning and wise to filter truth from lies. The days are here where people love falsehoods more than truth. Suffering is often viewed ONLY as a negative thing. But for faithful believers, suffering should be viewed through a greater redemptive lens. The apostle praises the church in Thessalonica for their endurance and faith in the midst of challenges and pressures resulting from that faith. Paul describes this suffering as benevolent, sharing in the sufferings of Christ. This is such an important truth to understand as we experience persecution and suffering. Which is greater, church growth or church health? What does a healthy church look even look like? Fear is a motivator, albeit not always a healthy one! Much like anxiety over a final exam, it can be overwhelming to consider End Times events as pictured in Revelation specifically, and in text like 1 Thessalonians 4-5 as well. There is so much we don't know YET. In this text, Paul highlights another event in this topic after his discussion of the Return Of Christ (the "rapture") in 1 Thessalonians 4. In chapter five, Paul speaks of the "Day Of The Lord", or the day of God's wrath upon unbelief and rebellion. As you read the specifics that the Bible clearly states, it will be a "day" (or season of days) full of punishment, discipline, tribulation, and ultimately final judgment. For believers, however, this day is a day of promises fulfilled and even joy. That joy isn't a result of other's pain, but because God is both righteous AND just. Evil will not win this Day! This is the key to saying "yes" to God. We must see God for Who He is if we want to fully obey Him in where He leads.

Grief is normal to the human experience as an expression of deep loss and even deeper love. In Thessalonica, the church was experiencing grief over the death of some saints, likely from Christian persecution. However, their ignorance of God's plan for the Return of Christ left them confused in their faith. When is Jesus coming back? What about those who have already died? Paul addresses this in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and highlights the Christian hope and the promises of God for ALL who have believed in Christ. This truth should encourage the church to live distinctly different in light of all circumstances, even by the very threat of death itself. Death is not the final chapter, but the doorway to the next and eternal one. In many ways, this life is the preface to REAL LIFE for believers. Have you ever wondered, "What is God's will for my life?" If you have, then it probably was framed in sense of personal decisions like careers, school, marriage, etc. And we should desire to know God's personal will for our life! However, there is a key to knowing and understanding that will. God's Personal Will is revealed as His Moral Will is obeyed. In other words, God won't bring discernment about those personal decisions if we are unwilling to live out His clear standards as presented in the Bible. In this text, Paul exhorts the church in Thessalonica to live a life of holiness... "This is the will of God for you, your sanctification" (4:3). Sanctification is the process of being set apart and maturing in Christ, living by God's righteous standards as a result of His grace. Sanctification is the pursuit of holiness. When we walk in holiness, specifically in purity and not sexual immorality, we declare the LORDSHIP of Christ in our lives. The text highlights the dangers of allowing sexuality to run amuck. The Church should live different from the culture in this matter. We are to be self-controlled. Strong and healthy Christians and churches are predicated on some common threads. In this text, Paul communicates three of these truths that are foundational for established believers and churches. Faith and love go hand-in-hand together. Thessalonica is proving themselves a church that is committed to growing mature faith and nurturing a loving community. As a result, the apostle encourages them to continue their pursuit of holiness as well. These threads... faith, love, and holiness... are essential to spiritual health. The same is true today. We need deeper spiritual roots, a gospel community, and a real and relentless pursuit of holiness! In this third message from the "Standing Firm" series, Pastor Joey looks at Paul's love for the church as demonstrated in Thessalonica. His love is rooted in people and a deep concern for the souls of believers there. In spite of the trials and hardships, Paul exhorts the church to persevere. Trials are apart of God's plan to initiate and/or grow faith. He understands that the mark of effective ministry is not in how many people attend but in how many lives are being transformed by the gospel. The modern church often loses sight of this truth. The Gospel is the gospel of suffering! The gospel didn't come in flattery or eloquence. Instead the Good News came with conviction and the power of the Holy Spirit often in spite of the trials, persecution, and less than impressive presentation. The modern church needs to be cautious to never allow entertainment to be the priority! We should pursue excellence, but also leave room for God to do whatever He chooses. In this pilot message from the new "Standing Firm" series, Pastor Joey looks at 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 and Acts 17:1-10 as we trace the gospel relationship between Paul and the church in Thessalonica. Founded by Paul in AD 49-51, this church experienced constant struggles from persecution to doubts. Paul's letters to this church highlight the GOSPEL HOPE and the coming Kingdom of King Jesus. In the midst of uncertainties, we can trust that God is still in control and will not abandon His people. God keeps His promises. Thankfully, the church in Thessalonica had a reputation of faith even in spite of the turmoil she experienced. The gospel came with POWER and caused life change in this church! In this finale of the "The Big Ten Sermon Series", Pastor Joey looks at a Deja vu moment in Exodus 34 where Moses is sent back up the mountain to get a second copy of the Law. Of course, the first set was destroyed in a moment of rage when Moses found Israel worshipping an idol back in the camp. This time, the text highlights GOD'S CHARACTER as paramount above everything else. This is helpful as it frames the Law within both the love of God and the justice of God. Where do we find our satisfaction? In this message, Pastor Joey looks at Exodus 33 and this pivotal moment for Israel following their catastrophic sin of idolatry. God communicates to Moses that Israel will move forward to the Promised Land.... but without His near and personal Presence with them. At first thought, the idea of the Promised Land is inviting. It sure beats this wilderness! But without God's Presence, the Promised Land isn't as sweet. The people reflect and come to the conclusion that their relationship with God is their IDENTITY! As a result, there is a cry for grace. Identity is a hot word today. Where do we find identity? Relationships? Career? Sexuality? Social Causes? Our identity is to be found IN CHRIST! Exodus 32 is frustrating. In this story the new nation of Israel is being given it's "Constitution" (the Ten Commandments / the Law) by God and at the very same time begins to question God and attempt to redefine God. It's like amnesia sets in and yields impatience and idolatry. The consequences are horrific! In this familiar story, we see the inclination of the human heart toward sin. And it's ugly and ABSURD. It's a strange thing. In the Scriptures, we are taught to both FEAR GOD and yet, to not be afraid of anything. Immediately after the listing of the Ten Commandments is a unique text that highlights the peoples fear of God's wrath and yet a command to obey and to fear God for His mercy. It's a calling into relationship highlighted by a contrast. Do we fear the wrath of God or do we fear God in reverence and awe of His mercy? The tenth commandment is intricately connected to the eight commandment. Whereas stealing is the action, covetousness is the attitude that leads to the action. The scriptures teach the disastrous nature of coveting, as it steers our hearts toward something or someone else other than God Himself. Covetousness is IDOLATRY! Truth matters. Why? Because the GOSPEL is the GOSPEL OF TRUTH! When we fudge the truth in any scenario, we compromise and undermine the gospel by our testimony, out witness. The Ninth Commandment deals with not just lying, but specifically bearing false testimony or slandering a neighbor. Jesus defines our neighbor as anyone and everyone we come into contact with. There is never a good reason to withhold truth. Furthermore, even partial truth becomes an untruth as it erodes trust. Truth SHOULD BE an obvious mark of the disciple. Do not steal. That sounds simple enough.... until you begin to look at all the ways that one can manipulate people and things for financial gain. The 8th Commandment isn't just dealing with petty larceny, but fraud, lying by omission to the IRS, shady business practices, and even withholding a tithe to the LORD (see Malachi 3). Essentially, this command exposes our greed and self-centeredness. And, like all of the other commandments, we find ourselves guilty and in need of Jesus Christ! Don't murder. Okay, that's clear. Let's move on to the next one, right!?!?!? Well, at a second glance this command is a little more extensive. Despite the command only being two words in Hebrew, this prohibition reaches to a number of areas ranging from suicide to abortion, from euthanasia to premeditated murder. And if that isn't enough, Jesus takes it in the Sermon on the Mount and ascribes anger that leads to hatred as the heart equivalent of murder. Ouch! The sixth commandment again focuses us on the Imago Deo and the value of every human life. Life is sacred and this demands respect AND love for life. Honor is a weird and foreign in our modern culture. It's almost archaic or nostalgic, like a relic from a more formal day. Yet, the Scriptures clearly teach that God's children should demonstrate honor and show honor. The fifth commandment speaks to this. Specifically, the command is toward honoring parents, but generally it can be understood beyond that. As the fundamental institution of our society, the home is the incubator for teaching honor (respect, obedience, and gratitude). If a home nurtures these attitudes and behaviors, then the community and culture will be transformed by it as well. The fourth commandment may be the most misunderstood of all the commandments, particularly for non-Jewish believers. It is helpful to remember that Jesus kept the Sabbath and affirmed it's value. But what is the purpose of this day? And when is it? The Sabbath was created by God as a gift focusing on REST and WORSHIP. Originally, the Sabbath was Saturday (Sundown on Friday through Sundown on Saturday). But, for new covenant believers, we worship on "the Lord's Day" because is the day that Christ was raised from the dead. As such, the "Sabbath Day" can be viewed in this light as well. The principle is the same. We need a day set aside for rest and worship. In our hectic and stuffed schedule, we have not allowed MARGIN for God. This is breaking the fourth commandment. Matthew 11 helps us shape the Sabbath, even more importantly, as a foreshadow of the rest we find in Christ. We can rest in salvation, in freedom from sin, and hope for eternity. "Don't make me wash your mouth out with soap!" You may have heard this threat at some point growing up. Most certainly a "filthy mouth" was reflected in attitude or disrespect. But it can also be seen in crude language. Most people believe the third commandment deals solely with that. However, taking the Lord's name in vain goes beyond colorful language. It points to the tongue of a man or woman and how it can be a vessel for blessing or cursing. God's command to watch your mouth is because we too need to guard our tongue! Our conversation either speaks of the gospel of Jesus Christ, bringing glory to God, or can place a barrier to the very same gospel. Idolatry is a two-headed monster! In the second commandment, God explicitly forbids not just worshipping another god, but worshipping HIM in the wrong way. Is that even possible? Absolutely! The modern church can find itself in idolatry by allowing culture to influence the holy act of worship. It is the natural inclination of the heart to create such idols. The church idolizes personality, or programs, or buildings, etc., and the gospel gets watered down as a result. When the church majors on ANYTHING other than the gospel, we have fallen prey to idols. There are generational impacts to this truth as well. As we dive off into Exodus 20:4-6, let's be honest and identify the idols outside the church AND inside the church today. The journey into the Ten Commandments begins here in Exodus 20 as the SOVEREIGN, MORAL LAWGIVER demands exclusivity in worship. This is no small command as it sets the stage for all others. In many way, to love God as He demands assumes then obedience the rest of the Law. For to love the Lawgiver yields a love and obedience to the message of the Lawgiver. For the Israelites gathered at Mt. Sinai, this is a call to be holy and distinct from every other people. The Canaanites were entrenched in a pluralism of worship. It was definitely counter-cultural to be monotheistic (worship one god). The first two commandments deal specifically with idolatry. The first deals with WHO we worship and the second HOW we worship. "Worship is more than a song." (Jimmy Needham) In Mark 14:3-9 we witness this most beautiful and raw act of worship from Mary (of Bethany). Unfortunately, the disciples around didn't see her worship the same way. Instead, cynicism and pragmaticism eroded the beauty of both worship and Jesus in that moment. We too can be guilty of such judgment of worship. Instead of viewing worship as either "good" or "bad" based upon how we feel corporately about the music, the preaching, etc., we should see worship as our devotion to Christ in all things. It is more than a song! Mary doesn't sing audibly, but her heart is singing as she anoints Jesus. Her love for her Savior is so great that she doesn't care what anyone else things. As we turn in Mark's gospel toward the last week of Jesus' life, we discover His last parable in Mark 12. And true to the pattern in recent chapters, Jesus uses this teachable moment to emphasize the necessity of the Cross and challenge the wickedness of the spiritual leaders of His day. In this story, an absentee landlord sends servants to collect fruit of his vineyard that has been leased out to local farmers. The vinedressers (farmers) don't want to send any interest or payment of the crop to the legitimate owner of the land. As a result, a dispute breaks out that leads the murder of the owner's son and eventually the assumed wrath of the owner on the tenants. All of this is symbolic of how God's people (specifically the religious leaders) have rejected God and His Son, Jesus, failing to produce the fruit of either repentance or obedience. There is a challenge here to the church too. We have no room for pride and rejection. Jesus is the last and only messenger before the wrath of God comes! What keeps you from following Christ? In Mark 10:17-31 we discover a religious young man who is trying to DO the right thing in order to please God. Yet in his doing, he is still empty. Upon asking Jesus how one can have eternal life (be saved), Jesus challenges his doing by challenging his priorities. Religious activity void of a personal relationship with Jesus is empty! Marriage is messy. Why? Because life is messy and we are messy! Our personal sin impacts our marriage. In this message from the #MarkSeries, Pastor Joey looks at Mark 10:1-12 and Jesus' response to a question on divorce. Most of the time that Jesus was asked a question about the Law, there is an alternative agenda of entrapment. The religious leaders didn't like Jesus and wanted him to implicate himself as a heretic or madman. But, Jesus always knows the intentions of man. His response gives us a reminder of what God has explicitly said in His Word and demonstrated in His design cannot be changed due to our own sin and our culture's flippancy. In other words, God is FOR MARRIAGE. And although God's grace and forgiveness is available, divorce is a sin. We don't get to reinterpret the Scriptures based upon our pursuit of happiness, but must submit to the Scriptures in God's desire for our holiness! Message preached on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
God is zealous for His glory! In other words, the Almighty (Father, Son, and Spirit) will not share His glory with anyone! In this text, Pastor Joey invites us to climb a mountain with Jesus, Peter, James, and John in Mark 9:1-13. Atop of this summit, two others join the party (Moses and Elijah) and Jesus' entire countenance changes. It's a spectacular site for the frightened disciples. Ultimately, they are witnessing the shekinah glory of God radiating from Jesus Christ! The response of Peter is humorous but also telling of the human condition. Instead of bowing in worshipful reverence, Peter speaks and wants to do something (build tabernacles/tents) for Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. It's a classic moment where silence and worship SHOULD HAVE BEEN the response. God speaks again (like the baptism of Jesus) and affirms His pleasure with His Son and commands the disciples to listen and obey. We can all relate to ole Peter. In this message from Mark 8, Pastor Joey looks at Peter's extraordinary confession of Christ. It's the apex of Mark's gospel as it pinpoints the mission of the book (1:1) and the gospel. But the very next minute, Peter rebukes Jesus and is scolded by Him. Why? It's the scandal of the cross, of course! Like the disciples, we have these preconceived notions of Jesus and attempt to fit Him in our neat little box (as evidenced by our complacency, comfort, and general lack of obedience). But Jesus won't be backed into some narrow view of the Messiah. The "Son of Man" (Daniel 7) was always meant to be the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53). There is no crown without the Cross! The Gospel of Suffering demands that we, like Jesus, die. Whereas we don't have to physically die for our sin, we do have to die to our self, take up our cross daily, and follow Jesus. The heart is a dangerous place. In a culture that screams, "Follow your heart!", Jesus warns that our hearts aren't a safe bet! In fact, Jeremiah the prophet warns that our hearts are deceitfully wicked! All human behaviors originate in our heart, so it is absolutely critical to set guard over our heart. Many of the early miracles of Jesus weren't just about meeting physical needs, but about engaging in liberating individuals from evil's oppression. Mark 5 highlights an individual who was possessed by a number of demons. The story is horrifying because it frames the reality of spiritual warfare. There is a cosmic battle going on right now for the souls of men! In this story, Jesus steps in and brings freedom to the man and destruction to the demons (and the pigs). The miracle reveals the great value of a person as one bearing the image of God. It emphasizes God's sovereignty over all as well. But unfortunately it also reveals that human nature would rather live in darkness than light. What does the gospel require of us? This is a profound question. In Mark 2:1-12 we see a story of four friends who are willing to do whatever it took to get their friend to Jesus. Undoubtedly, they were just hoping to see Jesus heal their friend. What their friend received was SO MUCH MORE! The miracles of Jesus authenticate the person of Jesus... the Christ, the Son of God. They are not an ends of themselves, but a means to an ends. The objective is BELIEF. Many times we come to God asking for miracles, but our belief is shaky at best. But when we couple belief with obedience we discover something much more... faith! Faith doesn't leverage God for miracles, but believes that God is at work even when we don't see it. As we begin 2023, we begin in the Gospels. The Book of Mark presents an abbreviated telling of the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. A dear friend and companion of Peter, John Mark records this gospel to encourage Christians undergoing a great deal of persecution in Rome. The beginning of the book highlights his purpose, to declare that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God! This is GOOD NEWS to all who hear. The Gospel is the best news and it must be declared! In this Christmas Day message, Pastor Joey visits the visit of the Magi as recorded in Matthew 2. Although these travelers were not on site the night of Jesus' birth, their visit and their gifts authenticate Jesus' person and power. This narrative reminds us that there is always two options when encountering Jesus. Herod shunned the Savior and wanted to kill Jesus, but the Magi eagerly sought the LORD and discovered GOD WITH US. Herod is the prototypical "Grinch". The Magi embody the spirit of Christmas. As a result, we must ask ourselves what our attitude toward Christmas is this year? 40 days after Jesus' birth, we get to an unusual and seldom discussed story. As Joseph and Mary take Jesus into the Temple to dedicate Him to the LORD, the couple interacts with Simeon (and later Anna), who are described as righteous and devout followers of God who anticipated the coming of the Messiah. Simeon recognizes Jesus and blesses the family, but also gives a gospel warning of the purpose of the child. This is a beautiful moment of worship that is grounded upon faith in God's promises and faithfulness. All Simeon wanted before he died was to witness God's saving work for himself. Is Jesus enough this Christmas for you? Is the gospel enough to bring life and joy this holiday season to you and your home? In this finale of the "God In The Ruins" sermon series from the Minor Prophets, Pastor Joey looks at Malachi as we discover a culture that, once again, has forsaken their obedient faithfulness to God. Malachi is a series of disputes between God and the returned exiles to Jerusalem. The prophet begs the people to quite neglecting the Temple and the command of God to care for the Temple and the priests. This is NOT just some religious duty, but a reflection of their hearts that have, once again, turned away from God. God's Law demanded certain responsibilities, and the people were ditching them. As a result, culture was morally declining and God's people were compromising. Our faithfulness to God's house and to giving is a serious thing! Biblical stewardship is a Lordship issue! Zechariah is an unusual book filled with strange dreams and visions that highlight Israel's historical failures, emphasizes covenant renewal and covenant obedience, and ultimately foreshadows the coming of the Messiah. In our text, Pastor Joey looks at a beautiful Scripture that speaks of both Christ's triumphal entry recorded in all of the Gospels AND the future millennial and eternal reign of Christ! We discover a call to rejoice, to be hopeful, and to be confident as believers. That confidence is not ourselves, but in the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. The prophet Haggai is a post-exihilic voice to the returning Jews to be obedient to God's commands, specifically to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. After their return, the people quickly rebuild the foundation to God's house. But after a little persecution, they delayed for 16 years! All the while, the people in Jerusalem were building homes and re-establishing commerce. Alongside of Zerubbabel, Joshua, Ezra, and later Nehemiah, Haggai becomes a voice to strengthen the people's hands for spiritual task. This is an unusual message as Pastor Joey uses some very obvious alliteration to highlight God's work of rebuilding and restoring. This call is not just isolated in sixth century BC events, however. Much of this book is dedicated to the near fulfillment of Babylon's conquest of Judah and God's wrath upon all nations that rebel against God, Babylon included. Habakkuk is a deeply personal conversation between a prophet and God. Much like the Book of Job, we discover a faith in crisis that demands answers from God. Habakkuk has a pronounced hatred of evil, but to the unhealthy end of bitterness! As a result, he spends a lot of time and energy complaining and arguing with God! Much like Nahum, this book highlights the Problem of Evil and the relevant question, "Why do good things happen to evil people (or vice versa)"? The Problem of Evil has often been a source of distrust and disbelief in God. Essentially, the question ask how evil and sin can co-exist with an all-powerful, all-knowing, and good God. Thankfully, the Bible really does provide us insight into the solution. Nahum provides us such an answer. Nahum is the "rest of the story" of Nineveh, essentially Jonah, part two. 100 years later, Nahum writes about the fall of Assyria and the destruction of Nineveh. Whereas in one moment, this wicked people repents and God even uses to discipline His people (Israel), in another God vindicates Himself and Israel as punishment and wrath fall upon Assyria. It is a great reminder that God has a good and redemptive purpose in everything! God does not "pass over" our sin. There is a day of reckoning and that day will be harsh and just! Jonah is the bad boy of the prophets! As the most recognizable of the Minor Prophets, most people look only at the unique story lines... the rebel prophet, the big fish, the vomit! But Jonah 4 gives us the meat of the book. In the conclusion of Jonah we discover the human condition, the attitude of Israel in the Old Testament and the attitude of self-righteous humanity today. We LOVE God's mercy when we are the recipient, but we like to put parameters on it with others. But here we discover a benevolent and unchanging God in Jonah that cares deeply for His Creation. He is patient and wants to see people repent. This should be our attitude as well towards the lost world. Anger is seldom the answer. We can trust God to accomplish His good purposes! It's so easy and natural to seek revenge. It's is difficult and supernatural to leave it in the hands of God! In this message from the "God In the Ruins" series, Pastor Joey looks at the Book of Obadiah, specifically Obadiah 1:3, 10-15 as the prophet discusses the pride of Edom and the vengeful attitude of this "brother" to Israel. The Edomites were descendants of Esau and therefore blood brothers to the nation of Israel, yet their histories were often characterized by a "Hatfields vs. McCoys" feud. After Jerusalem is invaded, the Edomites rejoiced and even assisted in the devastation to their neighbor. As a result of their pride and sense of superiority, God promises judgement upon Edom. The book shows us that vengeance is in the hands of God, not us! We are to show kindness, hospitality, and brotherly love to our neighbor, not hatred and bitterness. This is the message of the gospel! God's loved us even when we were enemies of the Cross and provided the means for our salvation. Jesus humbled Himself to die for the hostile! The Book of Joel is a short reminder that God is a just and righteous God. The message of HOSEA is both beautiful and alarming. As most prophets live out peculiar lives, in this case God calls this prophet to do something that would be naturally unwise, marry and unfaithful woman. As the story develops we witness the struggle between faithfulness and infidelity and the prophetic correlation between God and His chosen people, Israel. Despite the "alluring" pursuit and love of God, Israel is constantly betraying God and living in idolatry and sin. The broader view is that of fleshly humanity. Despite all that God has done for us, we are sinners that run to evil. We need a gracious and loving God! And that's the HOPE of the Book of Hosea. In spite of sin, God is still loving and forgiving. The modern church often omits this theme of suffering for something more comfortable, palatable, and easy. But the New Testament church took Jesus' words in John 16:33 seriously. They expected opposition and suffering because Christ experienced opposition and suffering for our salvation! We are commanded to REJOICE in the midst of such trial, not because we like pain, but because we know we aren't alone in the suffering. We enjoy His Presence in the suffering with us. Ultimately, this theology of suffering is framed around the faithfulness of God! Every suffering, trial, and hardship has a redemptive purpose. The gospel is the most urgent message of our day! In a world that is screaming out many other crisis, the greatest is that of eternity. In 1 Peter 4:1-11 we find a call to live out the gospel by living out the "will of God". The Will of God is not a mystery. We can discover God's Moral Will through His Word and His Providential Will by the message of redemption as God is working all things together for His sovereign purpose. Somewhere in the midst of that, we discover God's call to holiness, gratitude, and a gospel lifestyle. The stakes couldn't be higher as eternity in Heaven or Hell weighs in the balance. It is high time for the church to live out and vocalize the gospel in the world that God has placed us into. The gospel calls us to live distinctly different! As we journey on in 1 Peter, we discover nuances of that gospel challenge how we live, do family, and engage with one another. In this message, we look at how the gospel changes our interactions. We are exhorted to show sympathy, brotherly love, and humility (3:8). We are admonished to set a guard of wisdom over our tongue (3:9-11). We are told to suffer courageously with gospel perspective (3:13-14). As a result, then we are able to speak the gospel into someone's life (3:15-17). Essentially, the tension we all face is in regards to our rights. In a culture that is attempting to redefine the home, marriage, gender, and sexuality, God has given us His perfect DESIGN (Genesis 2:18, 24). As a result, Christian marriage demonstrates equality of VALUE, but complimentary PURPOSES. Husbands are to be spiritual leaders of their homes, and wives are to follow their husbands in support and encouragement. This DESIGN is a gospel partnership! Husbands don't lord authority over their wives, but honor and cherish her. Wives don't begrudgingly react, but respect and encourage. And when the Christian home looks like love and respect (Ephesians 5:33), then God can use it for His greater purposes! The outside world sees the gospel instead of a battle field. They witness love, compassion, forgiveness, AND truth!
Publius Syrus, a first century BC author, posed the question, "What is left when honor is lost?" In this message we look at the honor code in the Scriptures, the command to show love, honor, and respect to others regardless of disagreement. This "code" applies specifically to authority, but certainly isn't limited there. It demands humility, love, and service to others. These qualities are desperately needed today in a self-centered culture that normalizes slander and disrespect. The church ought to model the example of Christ by showing honor, respect, and care for others. This "code" doesn't mean the church condone evil behaviors, but see the value of every human being as image-bearers of our Creator! This message is part five in the "Different" series from 1 Peter.

As a result of God's work of redemption, the Christian has the ability through Christ to "put off" sin and live in Christ's righteousness. And as we do so, we recognize (more and more) that God is shaping us into a "chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession" so that we can declare the goodness and glory of God in the world that he has placed us into.
Our culture is notorious for some deceptive lies. One of those is the priority of happiness. But the Christian life is not the pursuit of happiness! It is the pursuit of HOLINESS! In this message, Pastor Joey looks at how God's "apartness" or "separateness" (His holiness) demands that believers also live differently. This is an impossibility on our own, but with Christ and the Spirit of God we can live a transformed life! It is Christ in us that allows us to live out the moral standards of God, shedding light in our dark world. There has never been a greater need for the holiness of the Church! This holiness naturally lends to a lovingkindness for humanity. When the rubber hits the road, sinfulness is what leads to all forms of hate! One of the greatest devices of the Enemy is to bring doubt to the redeemed, questioning the validity and power of salvation. As a result, many Christians are impotent to serve the LORD faithfully because there are lingering doubts. Peter's words here gives us great comfort as the Sovereign God is not only powerful to save, but also faithful to sustain believers to the end. As we begin the new "Different" series in 1 Peter, we get into some murky water with a couple words that Peter uses. These words have often been the source of confusion and even disunity in the Body of Christ. But they don't have to be. Peter writes this book to the churches in Asia Minor that are beginning to take a great deal of persecution and trial for their faith in Christ. As a result, the book encourages Christians to live the gospel difference out in light of this. For context, this grounds the use of the words "election" and "foreknowledge" in the conversation around our salvation. In light of God's SOVEREIGNTY and TIMELESSNESS, we discover that Divine foreknowledge and election and human free will can all exist beautifully together. And that is exactly Peter's hope in communicating in these terms. The apostle wants to strengthen the persecuted church's faith by appealing to the eternal security they have through Jesus' work! As the Ezra-Nehemiah narrative begins, the reader is filled with such great hope. Unfortunately, like all other Old Testament narratives, the ending is disappointing and anti-climactic! The final chapter has Nehemiah returning to Jerusalem (after he had traveled back to Persia to retain his position as the cup-bearer). Upon his return, the very reforms that took place in the previous chapters had already unraveled. There is widespread neglect of the Temple and worship. Intermarriage is a popular and culture norm. And the enemy's of the restoration process were actually welcomed amidst the whole thing. To say that Nehemiah was angry in his return is probably an understatement. As a precursor to Jesus' purifying of the Temple in John 2, Nehemiah does the same here. He even is found beating up and pulling the hair of those who oppose him. No this is certainly no model for church discipline, but Nehemiah's zeal for God's Law is noteworthy. He is passionate about the things of God, preserving the glory of God! We too should be this passionate! The whole scene reminds us that we are incapable of real repentance, renewal, restoration without Jesus. The Old Covenant merely exposes sin, while the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34) changes our heart. This is exactly what we need! We need a new heart and God's Spirit to help us live out His Law! God's SOVEREIGN work should lead to moments of incredible worship and fantastic joy! In Nehemiah 12 we discover such a moment. As the Jews gather at the walls to celebrate the completed rebuilding, worship breaks out among the people. Nehemiah separates the people into two marching choirs that encircle the city on the walls and then gather at the Temple mount. As they sing and worship, the city is FILLED with JOY! That joy is heard far and wide in the region. Today the church can be known for ALOT of things, but joy isn't often one of them. But it should be! This message from our "Life After Exile" series in Ezra-Nehemiah once again takes us to the necessity of repentance. As the Jews gather again to hear the Mosaic Law read (for three hours), they confess their personal sin and the corporate sins of their past. As confession occurs, so does praise! It's a beautiful picture of what corporate worship should look like.... the prominence of Scripture, prayer, praise, and repentance! Ultimately, the people renew their covenant with God as a physical sign of repentance. The story highlights the need for repentance, not just confession. Revival is not a scheduled meeting. It is a holy, spiritual reawakening of God's people to love and obey God. As a result, revival is something that GOD DOES! In Nehemiah 8, the Jews gather at the Water Gate to hear God's Law and, as a result, are stirred toward revival. God's WORD is at the center of this work. As a result, the people recognize their sin, repent, and worship God for His holiness! The ultimate outcome is that God's people are full of joy. The opposition is always the fiercest as the task is nearing completion. In Nehemiah six we find the Jews with full momentum in rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem. As a result, the naysayers of Sanballet, Tobiah, and Geshem once again attempt to pull Nehemiah away from the task and stall the work. But he doesn't compromise! In fact, he echoes these powerful words, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down." When we are walking in obedience to God's commands and His call on our lives, we are doing a GREAT WORK! And we cannot take our eye off the ball, not even for a second. The stakes are too high at that point. As a result in Nehemiah, the wall is completed in an astonishing 52 days, the opposition is humbled and frightened, and God receives all glory! The charge in this message is to REMAIN on the wall and not grow weary in serving the LORD! This is part 11 in our "Life After Exile" series in the Ezra-Nehemiah narrative.
Gospel work exposes darkness in the world. As the Jews rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah discovers an injustice among the people. As physical needs grow due to famine, people are mortgaging everything they and even selling their kids to their own kinsmen for survival. Essentially, the Jews were enslaving the Jews! Nehemiah is furious!
Today our culture attempts to redefine justice around arbitrary and subjective principles, instead upon the moral absolutes found in the Bible. As a result, the church takes a cavalier approach to movements or simply cowers away as a passivist. But the Gospel exposes darkness and demands that the church stand up for BIBLICAL JUSTICE. When things are wrong, Christians must be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). As a result, people will see this model and seek Christ as a result. That's why justice is a gospel issue. How we respond to injustice points people to OR defers people away from Christ! Message is part ten of the "Life After Exile" series in the Ezra-Nehemiah narrative.
Opposition is normative to the gospel-centered life! What we do in the opposition declares not just our faith, but our motives in the fight. In Nehemiah 3-4 we find that the project of rebuilding the wall has commenced and is growingly effective. Everywhere one looks people are joining in the work. But as they work, the local governors of the Canaan natives begin to harass, spread rumors, and bully the Jews. The text highlights the reality of spiritual warfare and the demand to PRAY and WORK in the midst of it. We are not to stop the work because we discover those who oppose it. In many ways, their opposition should fuel our faithfulness to God's call. We are to be WARRIORS and not wimps in these hard moments. Message preached on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at ParkerDC.
As we step into the Book of Nehemiah in our "Life After Exile" series, we discover how God gives us burdens for the purpose of prayer AND action. As the cupbearer hears of the awful news in Jerusalem concerning walls that still lay in ruin, he is grieved. As a result, Nehemiah prays for FOUR MONTHS and allows God to birth a course of action to put feet to his faith. Finally, the day happens when the King of Persia permits him to travel back to Judah and rebuild the walls. Even in opposition, Nehemiah is steadfast, calling on God's help and calling the people to work. Today, we cannot separate our problems from prayer. Nor can we divorce prayer from action. It may be the most unpopular word in our culture.... Repentance is much more than just a feeling of sorrow or guilt. It's a word that denotes a removal of sin and a replacing with God, His Word, and Christ! In Ezra 9-10 we get a beautiful picture of repentance as the people are exposed to God's Law (the Scriptures) and are convicted by their sin. Ezra models biblical repentance and the people follow. Repentance has ALWAYS been the message of Christianity. From the prophets to John the Baptist, from Jesus to the Apostles, REPENTANCE is the proper response to the gospel! And this act isn't a one-time event, but a constant in the life of the Jesus-follower. When was the last time you really repented, that you grieved your sin to the point of change? For most, it's been too long. Yet repentance is an absolute necessity to see revival and restoration! There is no restoration without repentance! Ezra 8 gives us a serious dilemma. As Ezra recruits his team to return from Babylon to Jerusalem to help reinstitute the Mosaic Law and lead the spiritual revival in the city, he sends out a plea to the surrounding areas in captivity to recruit from ALL the tribes of Israel. Expectantly, Ezra assumes the LEVITES would show up, for they were the traditional ministers in the Temple and some of the spiritual leaders of God's people. But as the prophet gathers at the river, he discovers that NO LEVITES show up to go. The text highlights the NEED for spiritual leadership to accomplish tasks of spiritual restoration and how it is critical for us to not just discover this leadership (oftentimes answering God's call on our life), but also to hold leaders to accountability. The Scriptures play a CRUCIAL role in the life of believers! Without savoring the Word of God, we cannot know the Will of God. It's that simple. He has a passion to teach the Holy Scriptures to others, knowing that the restoration in Jerusalem can only be sustained by a commitment to live according to God's Law. The WORD of God should motivate us toward the WILL of God.
