Boju Bajai in conversation with journalist Bidhya Rai. We talk about her experience being a woman inside and outside the newsroom, her journey from Bhojpur to Kathmandu, and why her relationship with social media has deteriorated over the years. Bidhya is an award-winning journalist who has consistently reported on stories about the most marginalised communities in Nepal through an intersectional lens, from disability rights to cyber security, gender and climate change. In 2023, she won a South Asia Laadli Media Awards for gender-sensitive reporting. This conversation was recorded in May 2023. Bidhya is a reporter at Kantipur.

Boju Bajai in conversation with Dr. Dovan Rai, a researcher, writer, and educator. In this episode, we talk about Dovan's experiences as a woman working in STEM and education, her writings about Nepal's long history of failed political leadership, and the role and effectiveness of civil society in Nepal.
Dovan Rai is passionate about making quality education accessible and has worked at OLE Nepal where she designed educational software for public schools in Nepal. She studied engineering at Pulchowk Campus and has a PhD in Computer science from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts.
She is currently working as a visiting lecturer in the computer science department at Mount Holyoke College. She is also a development board member of the University of Nepal (UoN) and writes on socio-political issues of Nepal.

Boju Bajai in conversation with writer and lawyer Durga Karki. In this episode, we talk about her writing journey as a young बुद्धिजीवि in Nepal, her grad school experience at Harvard, and her recent decision to stay off social media as much as possible.
Durga Karki is a lawyer by training, a journalist by interest, and a writer by passion. She writes both fiction and non-fiction in various national dailies and online portals on issues ranging from feminism to federalism. Her first book - a collection of short stories - 'Kumari Prashnaharu' was published in 2020. She recently graduated with a master's degree from Harvard University.

Boju Bajai in conversation with Dr. Amina Singh. In this episode, we talk about various aspects of Nepal’s education system by exploring issues like how students in Nepali classrooms are taught history and civic studies, and why there is an urgent need for Nepali classrooms to equip students with the skills to think critically, question and reason.
Amina Singh worked as a management consultant in the development sector for almost a decade conducting assessment studies, reviews, and evaluations for NGOs, INGOs, and multi/bilateral agencies. She earned her PhD from the Centre for Research in Learning and Change at the University of Technology, Sydney in 2015. Amina currently works as an independent researcher and educator, with an interest in community development, civic engagement, educational governance, and teaching learning practices in higher education. She is an adjunct faculty at Kathmandu University. She is currently engaged as a member of the University of Nepal Development Board and the Chair of the Academic Planning Committee.

Boju Bajai in conversation with writer Shivani Singh Tharu. In this episode, we talk about Shivani’s journey from tv to writing and her relationship with Kathmandu and Kathmandu’s elite institutions as a Tharu woman from Nepalgunj. She also speaks candidly about the struggles of being a full-time writer in Nepal, her creative process, and dabbling across different genres of writing.
Shivani started her career in tv as the host, producer, and scriptwriter for ‘Mero Geet Mero Sandesh’ and ‘Mulyankan’ on Nepal Television. She later went on to write the critically acclaimed play ‘Virtual Reality’ and also worked as a scriptwriter/director for the radio drama ‘Katha Mitho Sarangiko’ produced by BBC Media Action.
She used to be a columnist for Wave Magazine and is a regular contributor to Kantipur Koseli and Naya Patrika. Her debut novel ‘Kathmandu ma Ek Din’ was published in 2018 and she was honored with the Sundar Prasad Shah 'Dukhi' literary prize the same year..

Boju Bajai in conversation with Akanchha Karki, who is a theatre director, performer and educator. She runs Katha Ghera, a theatre collective in Kathmandu, and has directed several plays including the Nepali version of The Vagina Monologues, Private is Political, Line, The Giving Tree, Harek Babal Kura, and Animal Farm. She is also an aspiring filmmaker and directed her debut short film 'Sanai' through the British Council Gender Film Grant. She was a fellow at the Gograha filmmaking residency in 2022.
Her work focuses on mental health, gender sensitivity, and social justice. She challenges problematic structures, encourages unlearning of internalised prejudices, and facilitates difficult conversations that promote empathy and healing. She believes in creating safe spaces and sees vulnerability as a source of strength.

As the world becomes increasingly hostile towards feminist activists and women's movements, Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights, Asia & Pacific, aims to bring to light the stories and experiences of women, trans, and gender-nonconforming human rights defenders who work tirelessly in the margins.
In this episode, we bring you the voices of Maya Gurung and Dolma Sherpa - two amazing activists who work at Adhikaar, a New York-based, women-led community organization that serves the needs of the Nepali-speaking community and organizes low-income workers to promote social justice and human rights.
We discuss their work with the Nepali community in New York during the pandemic and conversations about self-care and protection of activists to ensure their wellbeing.
Maya Gurung works at Adhikaar as a senior case coordinator helping community members to resolve issues ranging from wage theft, immigration issues. Dolma Sherpa is an organizer at Adhikaar and has been part of several campaigns to support and address the needs for nail salon workers.

Nandar is a feminist activist, a storyteller, and a podcaster. She is the founder of Purple Feminists Group.
Nandar, a human rights defender from Myanmar, had to leave her home for an extended period of time after the military coup in 2020. Nandar talks about how she found herself having to reevaluate and revisit her work and her activism in the middle of political turmoil at home and a global pandemic and how these factors affected not just her work, but also her personal wellbeing.

In this conversation, Rukshana shares the specific challenges faced by Nepal’s trans community while reflecting on her own personal journey of navigating and accessing the educational system in Nepal as a trans woman.

It’s that time of the year again! What are we marching for this year? Re-releasing this episode from a few years ago because, well… we are so tired of telling people to stop telling us “everyday is women’s day” when clearly it’s not, especially not in Nepal! Just look at how the Nepali state treats women - Nepali women are unequal by law because of the discriminatory citizenship provision in the constitution, the judiciary mostly takes side of male perpetrators in cases of sexual violence against women, and Nepali women’s mobility for better job opportunities abroad is severely restricted. So here’s our “tyaaau tyaaau” once again reminding everyone that giving women’s day discounts and a public holiday on March 8th will not make the world a better place for us womaniyas!

Abortion is legal in Nepal, but it is still criminalised. What does this mean for reproductive justice and what impact does it have on the reproductive health of women? Why are women still being driven to seek unsafe abortions? Why does our society still view abortion as something shameful and how does that affect the health and mental wellbeing of women?
Reporter Srijana Khadka speaks to healthcare workers from Ramechhap and Syangja about the degree of safety and level of access of abortion services available to women. She also interviews the Executive Director of FWLD and leading advocate Sabin Shrestha who has been working in the area of legalisation and decriminalisation of abortion.

It's been exactly twenty years since Nepal legalized abortion. There's been a lot of talk about abortion and women’s rights over their bodies since Roe v. Wade was overturned in the US. But have we ever had similar discussions over abortion rights in Nepal, accessibility to such services, and the cultural attitudes towards abortion in Nepali society, where abortion was legalized twenty years ago?
In the first of this two-part series, we discuss the cultural attitudes surrounding abortion in our homes, families, and hospitals, and what that means for young Nepali women when they seek such services. And how could American politics around abortion rights actually have an impact down the line in countries like Nepal?

The level of violence against Dalit girls, minors is frighteningly high. However, in the absence of sustained scrutiny from the media and the public at large, the police’s response to these cases follow a usual pattern marked by hesitation, if not an outright refusal, in registering the case, negligence in investigation, and dismissal of caste dynamics. The local representatives, who actively engage in or support out of court settlements, make the path to justice more arduous. When cases manage to reach court, there is no telling to when justice will be served.
In this episode, we try to explore challenges faced by rape victims from marginalised communities when it comes to seeking justice. We also spoke to journalists Binod Pariyar, Rupa Gahatraj and Basanta Pratap Singh about the challenges involved in reporting such cases.

How do you talk about gender equality, when there is such a limited vocabulary to turn to in the Nepali language? How do people working at the community level communicate and disseminate ideas of gender equality and social justice from the jargon heavy handbooks and policy papers formulated by experts, and often in English?
For #UnitedNationsDay, we explore the challenges of creating meaningful dialogue centering around the issue of gender equality in Nepal’s public sphere which have historically been built around male-dominated patriarchal networks.
In the episode, we hear from individuals, who have been working in the area of gender equality and inclusion and what they are doing to ensure these conversations are accessible and resonate with Nepali women, across rural and urban settings.

On May 23, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari promulgated Nepal Citizenship (first amendment) Ordinance 2021. The heated debate on the ordinance has slowed down. So it's time for our cold takes on Nepal's latest citizenship law, featuring journalist Shova Sharma. She is a reporter at Setopati. She covers politics and parliament and has written extensively on citizenship laws. She explains what the ordinance means for women’s right to confer citizenship to their children, and how the Nepali state continues to treat women as 'दोस्रो दर्जाको' नागरिक.

In June 2020, AbhaLal2, Kalpana Jha and Sangita Thebe wrote ‘What mainstream feminists are getting wrong about the citizenship debate’ pertaining to the parliament endorsement of a bill to amend a clause in the Citizenship Act that requires foreign women married to Nepali men to wait seven years after marriage to obtain a citizenship certificate. The new ordinance has changed that and paved way for foreign women married to Nepali men to obtain citizenship without the seven years waiting period.

In this episode, we talk to Shubha Kayastha, a queer feminist affiliated to Body&Data, an organization that works in the area of internet freedom and digital rights. We asked Shubha what a feminist internet might mean or look like in the context of Nepal. We also talk about state surveillance (and other forms of surveillance) and how it almost always puts marginalized communities more at risk. How can we protect our privacy and our freedom of speech when the state begins to encroach upon our liberties, especially during the time of a pandemic that requires varying degrees and forms of surveillance in order to contain the contagion.
Earlier this month, right after we recorded this episode, the Upper House endorsed Bill on Special Service allowing phone tapping without a court order. Legal experts say the provision could be misused by the government to silence dissidents. bit.ly/2B8fNce

For International Transgender Visibility Day we spoke to queer rights activist Rukshana Kapali about language, visibility and why Nepal’s queer movement needs diverse narratives to move forward. The world's "best constitution" doesn't give equal citizenship rights to Nepali women cos some citizens are more equal than others, haina bro?
A lot happened after we recorded this episode, all of which we couldn't include. So here's a mini explainer:

Amid uncertainty surrounding the amendment to the Citizenship Act, the Home Ministry on April 2 issued a circular to all 77 chief district officers across the country, telling them to grant citizenship by descent to those individuals whose parents are citizens by birth.

And then some smart ass uncle filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court to not implement the ministry’s decision on citizenship, leading to an interim order to the government to stop the implementation.

A few days later, the Supreme Court paved the way for individuals, whose parents are Nepali citizens by birth, to acquire citizenship by descent. (Boohoo, uncle!)

For now, hundreds of people without citizenships are able to apply for papers. But the issue of citizenship through mothers remains and we will have to wait and see what our lawmakers do about amending these laws.
