This topic came from a social situation where Christian was concerned with re connecting with family after being away for so long. He had so many ideas and made up stories in his mind of how the interaction may go and how they may feel about him. But that was all just made up. Hello Mogpies! Time for another recast of a classic! Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays!
We are back this week with another fascinating philosopher from ancient Greece. He was the father of cynicism, lived in a barrel, owned nothing and did what he wanted when he wanted despite how rude it might be. Diogenes is a rather interesting philosopher, he believed that philosophy should be seen through actions rather than theoretical thought. He butted heads and challenged everyone no matter their status in the world. He yelled at people in the street, spat in the face of nobles, challenged philosophers and mocked kings. He did not care what others thought of him, he had no shame and this mind set if what has given us the ideas of cynicism today. But is this the whole story? Were his words cherry picked to create a specific image of him to the masses so he will be more acceptable? And does knowing some of the other things that he argued for change our mindset of Diogenes?

Hey there Mogpies! In the last couple of years we have really began to see how information can be used as a life saving tool, but also as a dangerous weapon. There is more fear now than ever revolving around what information we share and with whom. There is such a fear of someone stealing our ideas or our words being taken out of context. But with how connected the entire world is, why are we not sharing our knowledge with everyone to see what new and exciting thing we can come up with in a fraction of the time it used to take. Look at how fast the vaccine was made for COVID and that is through sharing our finding with one another. But there are those that are holding back this progress, and it is mostly the publishing companies. They want to hold onto all knowledge and block it with a large pay wall. Luckily there are individuals out there that are leaking this information and showing the importance of sharing!

Hey there Mogpies! It is no surprise that the government spends money in some surprising ways. In 1975, Senator William Proxmire wanted to bring this crazy spending to the light. So, he invented the Golden Fleece awards. Each month he would call out something silly that the government was spending money on. Things like a $3,000 study to determine if people in the military should carry umbrellas. Or spending $103,000 to watch a fish get drunk. There are a lot of bizarre studies out there that Proxmire gave Golden Fleece awards to. But was he wrong to call out these studies? Did he just not understand the science and was only judging them based on their headline? Let's find out!

Hey Mogpies! It really feels that each day the world gets a more and more crazy. There is so much hate in this world and those that do not fit in others "norm" must be removed. Frankly it has been disgusting and hurtful to see all this hate and misinformation out there. But why now? Why is this such a focus? Is it just a diversion from our real problems? Or is this just the state of our news now. Everything has become so sensational inn recent years where you cannot trust any of the information that is being given to us. But there are so many. out there that. take the "news" at face value and jump on bandwagons of hate just because, even though they do not take the time to understand what they claim to hate. Drag is a beautiful art form that allows so many people to express themselves, how can it be harmful to children? What is really hurting the kids is the normalizing of oppression resion and hate towards those that. do not follow their values.

Hey there Mogpies! The rite of passage is something essential to a community to give their people the mental strength to know that they are an "adult" now. That they can be depended on, that they can provide. All over the world there are various ceremonies that are specific to their world views. But something happened in the United States. It is almost like we have removed or dulled the rite of passage. And this has lead to people feeling lost, or not knowing where they stand in the community. Are they adults? Well by law, yes but in the eyes of their peers they may still seem like children. That is why these ceremonies are so important. It is a way for the community to know and except the individual in their new stage of life. Some of these rites can be looked at as harsh or dangerous, and they very well can be. But they focus in on what is most important to that community or tribe. Whether it is a form of beauty, endurance or being able to withstand pain they all have something so powerful behind them.

Hello Mogpies! Tipping is just another part of our days at this point. It has become so ingrained into our society that there are a multitude of laws made by our government to protect it. But the history of tipping is rather dark. It started as a way for the king to show his servants that he is pleased. It was later brought over to America by rich aristocrats in the 1850s as a way to feel fancy and flaunt their wealth. Then it became a way to create a new form of slavery in our nation. After the abolishment of slavery tipping was one of the only ways freed slaves could earn a living. But rather than giving them a chance it became a way to allow employers to avoid paying them. And to this day it has not changed all that much. From the beginning there has been push back against this practice, but the government finds a way to keep protecting it and allowing it to continue. The rules and laws around tipping are horrible to put it lightly and it needs to be talked about and changed because too many companies are allowed to take advantage of their employees.

Hey There Mogpies! Our environment has a lot of effect on our mental health. The noise and air pollution of a bustling city, to the silence of a rural town there are benefits to each, but there can be some detrimental aspects attached to these living conditions as well. Many architects have been putting more focus on mental health and how our surroundings can affect it and there is one idea that keeps coming up. That is that we need to incorporate more nature into our lives. Nature can be used to break up the monotony of large buildings all looking the same. Giving our brains more external stimulation which in turn helps boost our overall mood. The ways in which nature is being incorporated is rather fascinating so lets talk about it!

Hey, hi and hello Mogpies! Crowdfunding is a tool that has been used across all facets of needs. From medical bills, funerals, vacations, to even making a salad people has used these platforms to ask for money from the masses. And inn most cases these are legitimate requests, but there is a dark side to crowdfunding. Wherever there is money involved there is someone out there trying to game the system and scam people out of their cash and crowdfunding is definitely not safe from this. In fact some of the most horrible lies are being told through crowdfunding in order to make a quick buck. Exploitation of children, blatant racism, animal cruelty, what ever tugs at our heart strings someone has made a scam for it and has tried to get money off people for it. So sit back and listen in to some pretty bad crowdfunding stories.

Hello Mogpies! We have been discussing AI a lot these days. With the advances that OpenAI have given us many people are asking how can we tell if this is a robot or a human. While it is a current dilemma that we are having, this actually goes back about 70 years. In the 1950s Alan Turing developed a test to determine if a human is communicating with a robot or a human. This test is lovingly named the Turing test. The interviewer asks a series of questions to the participant to try and trick them into revealing if they are a robot or not. Now one of the big issues with this test is that it has been beaten and is considered outdated by many. So with the many advances in AI we need to develop more/better tests to stay ahead of its growth. And there are a few things that we can try to test for, such as empathy, intelligence, or self-awareness. These are some of the traits that we as humans have determined are not possible for robots to replicate yet. But that may change in the future...in fact that is what scientists are trying to accomplish. So lets talk about it!

Hey there Mogpies! This week wee are diving into the word of chatGPT, a new software developed by OpenAI. You might remember us talking about them in our AI art episode. They developed Dall-E the ai art generator that is changing the art world. And now they created something else to rattle our cages. ChatGPT is able to deliver text based answers to questions, write papers and articles or hold conversations in real time. It has a vast database from the internet to compose these answers. While this is an amazing thing to see yourself first hand it does raise some red flags. Like what if one side of an argument gets more attention online than the other, does that mean that the text provided by chatGPT will be biased? Well yes, yes it will. We have seen experiments in the past that have tried to accomplish what OpenAi has done here, but their attempt seems to be the most successful so far. Regardless of the outcome this really is becoming the year of AI so we are excited to see what may come next.

Mass shootings are on the rise and there is a strange phenomenon attached to them. The killers are gaining a follower base. There are groups of individuals out there, specifically teens that look at these shooters and find things that they can relate to. Whether it is shared interests or a shared depression there is a common thread that they can grab onto. It is tough to think about and even tougher to think about how to resolve this issue. But it is a conversation that needs to be had in order to start the journey. to finding a potential solution.

Hello Mogpies! This weeks episode is inspired by the new documentary on Netflix "Dont Pick Up The Phone". It tells the story of a hoax caller that convinced more than 100 managers to perform illegal strip searches on their employees, and in most cases it did not end there. Looking at this story it really is difficult to understand how people could fall for such a trick, but we are very trusting in nature. And based on the Milgram Experiment conducted in the 60's people are surprisingly obedient to who they perceive as an authoritative figure. We can see the effects of that experiment in these calls, with how easy it was for the caller to get these people to do really anything he wanted. October is the month for spooky shows and frightful stories being brought up again and again. Netflix has jumped on that idea with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Instead of the typical documentary style showing of the grizzly events that took place this is a scripted show that is the interpretation of what really happened. These style shows often try to humanize the killer, giving a reason to their madness. Or showing them have remorse for some of their actions. But what is the purpose of this? Are we supposed to feel empathy for someone like Dahmer? Or is this just. re-opening a wound for the victim's families? It is important to remember the victims and remember the horrible things that. happen in this world so we can try. and stop them from ever happening again, but is this type of glorification really helping...Let's talk about it!

This new program will give people with mental illness treatment, whether they. want it or not. There are some skeptics of this program, where some are very excited for this. While on paper it sounds like it can be incredibly beneficial for those that were not able to receive the help they need, but the way it is being handled and distributed is rather concerning. From the long list of people that can give you a court order to be apart of this program and if you fail the program you can then end up hospitalized and/or loose your rights. There is a lot of things that are scary here and we really need to pay attention to this because this could be adopted by. other states as well. And it can just be a way to clear the street legally.

Hello Mogpies! This was really a fun conversation for us. The advancements in science are truly astonishing, especially in the world of organs. Waiting for an organ can be an excruciatingly long process that can add unneeded stress on an individual and their families. So scientist have been looking for an alternative to the organ crisis we currently have. One solution is the creation of embryos with the use of a sperm and egg in order to produce the organs needed. Where as the other alternative is to use cells from the patient to 3D print the organs that are needed at that time. Now when talking about this there are plenty of ethical issues that come up. He was the father of cynicism, lived in a barrel, owned nothing and did what he wanted when he wanted despite how rude it might be. Diogenes is a rather interesting philosopher, he believed that philosophy should be seen through actions rather than theoretical thought. He butted heads and challenged everyone no matter their status in the world. He yelled at people in the street, spat in the face of nobles, challenged philosophers and mocked kings. He did not care what others thought of him, he had no shame and this mind set if what has given us the ideas of cynicism today. But is this the whole story? Were his words cherry picked to create a specific image of him to the masses so he will be more acceptable? And does knowing some of the other things that he argued for change our mindset of Diogenes?

These are not small changes, these are not things that can be ignored. The changes this week will have serious repercussions in the near future. We are a country divided and we had hoped that the chaos was over...but it is not. Making it easier to carry a gun in one of the most populated cities where violence against asian Americans was not long ago. The disregard of the Miranda Rights, so everything you say can be wrongly interpreted and used against you. A woman's right to choose slipping away with Roe v Wade being overturned. Everything about this week feels like a joke, like we could never have gone back like this. We need to pay attention to this country and be smarter with whoo we elect. And with these changes the true colors of some senators are coming out, just blatant racism throw out over social media with no regards for what they are really saying. The government does not fear the people, they do not care what we think and that. is not how it supposed to be...

He is a master at his craft and has made many memorable films that all have such a deep meaning and message behind them. He is able to capture humanity so well and that. can be seen in Parasite. This is a movie about classism and making your life better. But instead of working your way to the top and creating that fantasy we see a family lie their way to comfort and see how karma comes back for them. The interesting thing about this film is regardless of their so called success they never do anything to better their living situation at home. As if that is never on their mind and they know that ultimately this is where they belong. This is a beautiful film and such a roller coaster to watch.
