Last summer I got a Korean vagacial on accident, told the story on Instagram, asked if I should make it into a podcast episode, had Kayti volunteer to talk about nudity for said episode, and subsequently put off recording it for over a year and editing and posting it for even longer, BUT IT'S FINALLY HERE. We re-live the steamed vag experience, have an HPV PSA moment, compare the Korean spa experience in Korea with the experience in the states (King Spa and Sauna please sponsor us), discuss our experiences of different cultural attitudes towards communal nudity, how different attitudes around bodies are in western spas in our experience, and propose increased communal nudity as a solution for various societal ailments. We recorded an episode, I had my brother make his final statement, intending that to be the end of it, and then we just kept talking. This is 50% me being roasted by my brother and 50% him suddenly remembering all the details about our trip he couldn’t remember in part one.

Over the summer, my 18-year-old brother and I spent 3 weeks together in South Korea, and obviously we had to unpack that on the podcast. We go over childhood memories, why we chose to go to Korea, the experience of travelling together when we haven’t really spent much time together in nearly 8 years, the appeal of K-pop, Korean vs. American celebrities, renting friends in Korea, why I am a walking travel disaster, and loads more.

This is part two chatting with one of my long-time best friends & amazing singer songwriter Ashley Rose. We talk about her experience seeing Björk live (aka meeting god), expanded definitions of church and worship, whether the power of seeing a work of art or performance in person comes from the presence of the work/artist or from the environment it’s in, collective energy and the dancing plague of 1518 (disclaimer around the time we were talking about that I really poorly tried to explain the “neurological phenomenon” of brain activity syncing up but really what I was trying to talk about was mirror neurons and that is not at all an accurate description of how mirror neurons function my bad), go back into our previous concept album chat, discuss singer songwriters and take a bit of a deep dive into the way Tori Amos writes, chat about how helping one connect with oneself is a sacred function of art, and more.

I finally figured out why I’ve felt so creatively blocked the last few weeks. It always comes back to money - the construct you just can’t kick. This one’s a chat about the frustrations of the back and forth between a desire for fulfilling work and long-term financial security and how often these two things feel mutually exclusive - and an open invite to join me in leaving society behind to live in community and barter and trade and never worry about having to work for a living again.

This episode contains a small fan club meeting for Emma’s mom, and we discuss how Emma ended up in divinity school at a Presbyterian seminary (a thing that usually does not happen to people who identify as Mormon), the way that Mormonism, like any religion, doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, what the “cafeteria approach” to the church can look like, the sacredness of bringing together seemingly disparate ways of making meaning, what it means to be queer and to queer religion/spirituality/Mormonism specifically, the need to take spiritual needs as seriously as physical or emotional needs, and more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! The Mindful Narcissist is one year old!!! In this episode I get about as mushy as I’ll ever get on here reminiscing about the last year of the podcast, and look at the ways I’ve grown and  refined my messages here, and I look back on the social media coaching I finished a year ago next week, how it was one of the best investments I’ve ever made in myself and the ways my relationship with social media and my boundaries there have evolved over the past year. This is part two of the soulmate chat on embracing how much our beliefs and the way we tell the story around them can change over time. We go over the arc of my soulmate’s religious/spiritual narrative, the pressure in religious spaces to reconcile with family regardless of toxicity and abuse, the way that organised religion tends to struggle with consent across the board, trusting your gut over religious counsel, faith in individuals over systems, questioning at what point a system has caused too much damage to fix it rather than tear it down and start fresh, the importance of maintaining spirituality even outside of religion, the effects of really trusting yourself as the narrator of your story, the spiritual practice of consistent and gentle reflection, the way religious spaces often give us an extremely limited range of ways to emote in and engage with our relationship to the divine, the creation of our own canons as we navigate our relationship to spirituality, and more.

We’re back with another soulmate chat, this time about embracing how much our beliefs and the way we tell the story around them can change over time. This is part one - we go over the arc of my religious/spiritual narrative, being comfortable with detachment in spirituality, internal vs. external detachment, the ways in which I still perform aspects of my Mormon past years after having left that behind, the way that personal breakthroughs can seem to contradict previous breakthroughs but that doesn’t invalidate them, the Christian hyper-fixation on the future and the ways that can stop us from enjoying or even really experiencing the present, my refusal to plan too deeply for the future coming from a relentless optimism and the way that actually kind of echoes the faith I was taught to have in God’s plan for me, the ways I’m actually a better Christian post-Christianity than I ever was in it, developing one’s character through nurturing rather than forced efforts towards “personal growth”, the ways we’re all actually so similar in our thinking and just have different language to articulate it, issues of Christian exceptionalism, and more.

This one’s a chat with my favourite Mormon Prom date - in which we talk about several high school memories that I’d completely forgotten, incriminating teenage YouTube channels and Tumblr pages, the tea on Utah Mormons, the scandal of writing a paper on the need for more comprehensive sex education while at a Mormon-heavy Utah college (no not THAT one, the other one), why people are so scared of sex, some good ol’ Mormon sexual slang (NCMOs, durfing, and soaking….cover your kids’ ears, folks), what our sex education was like, a future beyond binaries, embracing individual identities leading to radical collective compassion, our experience at EFY (a Mormon youth summer camp-esque thing), and much more.

All you really need to know about this episode is that around the 37 minute mark, Georgia plays the jaw harp, but in case that doesn’t sell it enough - first of all, what’s wrong with you? - we also chat about fame and fortune, vulnerability/the performance thereof on social media, change and liminality, Georgia’s really truly great monthly newsletter, research as a way of loving, forming relationships with traditions that are not ours, our disconnect from our own heritage, the way traditions can be a comforting and guiding force, thoughts on running away and joining the circus, our very different histories and relationships with music, a bit more insight to my obsession with drawing tiny circles, leaving love as a legacy, manifestation, the music-writing process, and balancing discipline and enjoyment in practising.

After going over my personal journey with leaving the church I was raised in last week, this week I’ve brought my soulmate back on to give her own version of a similar journey that has yielded a very different outcome. We talk about what it means to deconstruct and then reconstruct one’s faith, the way that can become a spiritual practice in itself, utilising faith in the quest to humanize those around us, the way calls for unity are often mobilised in religious spaces to maintain the status quo, the American Christian martyr complex, the prevalence of traffic stories to illustrate the spiritual practice of patience (is this just a California thing?), the abstraction of faith, the way Evangelical/religious spaces tend to create open/shut issues, the way church settings can create isolation and keep you in a carefully curated bubble, the potentially problematic idea of preaching the gospel with the way you live your life (every member a missionary, amirite?), intent vs. impact, and loads of other lovely insightful bits. This is it - we’re kicking off the year with the long awaited “Why I Left the Mormon Church” episode. It is, spoiler alert, not a hard-hitting-hot-take-spill-the-tea-on-Mormonism type of deal (soz if that’s what you were hoping for), but rather a spiritual autobiography of sorts (to use the words of my new favourite atheist chaplain, Vanessa Zoltan). In addition to getting up close and personal about my spiritual journey and how ultimately everything came down to specific details of the Mormon conception of the afterlife, I answer questions about how purity culture has affected my understanding of my own sexuality and why I was in a wedding dress at 14.

I’ve completely changed my stance on hierarchies (maybe kinda sorta not really idk it’s all an ongoing existential crisis). In this episode I go over a bit of my thinking behind my curation of the members show at Artlink in Donegal (which really kinda started this all), the research on archives and documentation that I did while on residency at Greywood Arts in Killeagh, Cork before I left Ireland, and the work I did with Austin Ivers on his show “The Earth Dies Screaming” at 126 Artist-Run Gallery in Galway and the collaborative publication that went along with it. This one’s a v fun co-host situation with Kayti Everette - we discuss our Christian upbringings, church choirs and youth musicals, Jesus camp (a real highlight of this episode is Kayti singing one of the cheesiest Jesus camp song I’ve ever heard), misidentifying panic attacks as spiritual experiences, how damaging purity & modesty culture can be, the way growing up like that still shapes our internal narratives, developing a more expansive idea of gender than what we were raised with, views on marriage and non-traditional relationships, embracing loneliness as a sacred practice, and much much mooooore. We cover the struggle of defining an artistic practice, the problems associated with validating one’s art practice through the exhibition of work, our strange and unnecessary obsession with competition and rankings, when ritual moves beyond physicality to the true core of it, the value of the aesthetic experience, the greediness of our need to explain everything, the terrifying idea of deliberately creating meaningless things, and we get real existential with the question of whether you’d like to be yourself, or just BE (and WHAT THAT EVEN MEANS).
