In this special episode, Shepheard-Walwyn host Jonathan Brown sits down with John Perkins, a former Economic Hitman and gets the conversation going by breaking down the political system of our generation. The four pillars of that system: fear, debt, scarcity, and divide-and-conquer- show how political messaging can be engineered to keep populations anxious, dependent, and easy to manipulate.

John explains how debt can be used as a tool of control, why GDP can be misleading as a measure of prosperity, how patronage and corruption are normalised, and how international arrangements like the Saudi petrodollar system were structured to keep wealth and power flowing in one direction. He argues that real change starts by changing perception, stepping beyond fear, and asking better questions about work, value, and the kind of future we want to build.

The biggest legal gap in history isn't about human rights, but the rights of the Earth itself.

In this episode, Shepheard-Walwyn host Jonathan Brown sits down with Jojo Mehta, co-founder of Stop Ecocide International, to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Polly Higgins, the barrister who gave up her career and sold her home to become a lawyer for the planet.

Polly believed that ecocide, mass destruction of the natural world, deserved a place alongside genocide and war crimes as an international crime. Polly's vision is now a global legal movement reshaping international law.

Jojo reveals how this movement has grown from grassroots activism to UN diplomacy, why some of the world's smallest nations are leading the charge, and how Polly's final book, Dare to Be Great, challenges every one of us to find our unique purpose and use it.

In this special episode, Shepheard-Walwyn host Jonathan Brown interviews one of our best-selling authors, Fred Harrison, to mark the launch of his new book, Cheating, which argues modern civilisation was built on an ancient betrayal in which leaders diverted economic rent for self-interest, creating an irresponsible social system that persists today. Fred defines rent as the surplus over basic needs that once powered human evolution, then links today’s “four plus one” crises—political paralysis, ecological breakdown, migration, autocracy, and AI—to the ongoing capture of rent. He forecasts a severe global downturn around 2028 as the current 18-year cycle ends, worsened by post-2008 policies and AI-driven job losses. He describes regional deprivation in the UK as deadly, calls for indicting the culture of cheating, proposes “one world rent” to incentivise cooperation, warns that AI may scale corrupt values, and urges an informed public conversation to reform human empathy and the economic system for the greater good.

In this biographical episode, Jonathan Brown interviews bestselling author Fred Harrison about his life and work, leading up to his forthcoming book, Cheating.

This conversation traced back how Fred Harrison recounts a rootless childhood across Cyprus, Germany, England, and Singapore that shaped his global perspective and drive to understand what unites humanity.

He then explains how studying Henry George’s economics led him to leave Fleet Street, develop the 18-year property cycle thesis, forecast major recessions, critique rent-seeking, and reflect on failures to reform systems in Britain and Russia, culminating in a broader cultural and psychological argument for systemic change.

Jonathan Brown welcomes returning author and concert pianist/engineer Edi Bilimoria to discuss his new book, “Consciousness Came First,” an 80,000-word root-and-branch restatement (not merely an abridgement) of his 660,000-word, four-volume “Unfolding Consciousness,” which won the 2022 Grand Prize from the Scientific and Medical Network. Edi explains the need for a more accessible volume and his central claim that consciousness is fundamental and expressed through the brain rather than produced by it, using analogies like electricity and the pianist/piano. He also critiques scientism, argues the “hard problem” can’t be solved by intellect alone, outlines levels of the human being, discusses AI as simulation without awareness, and shares views on death, terminal lucidity, and after-death states, emphasising inner treasures and spiritual evolution.

In this episode, Jonathan Brown interviews historian and author Sean Delahanty about his book Company Men: The Invention of Shareholder Value and the Splintering of the American Economy.

Sean explains how dispersed ownership and weak accountability fueled debates over corporate purpose, from New Deal-era corporate social responsibility to 1960s conglomerates and their collapse. He traces how Milton Friedman’s critique, the Efficient Markets Hypothesis, and Jensen and Meckling’s “nexus of contracts” theory helped legitimise shareholder value and hostile takeovers in the 1980s, framing raids as a means of freeing “free cash flow.”

We explore how shifts in economic theory radically reshaped the American economy and fueled massive accounting scandals such as WorldCom.

Welcome to a combined Shepheard-Walwyn and Property Sharemarket Economics (PSE) podcast. In this episode, our beloved host Jonathan Brown sits down with Andrew "Andy" Pancholi, founder of the Market Timing Report, co-author of the bestselling book Zero Hour, and fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Andy leads a fascinating dual career as a wide-body commercial pilot and one of the world's top market forecasters. He explains how the exact same risk-management checklists used in the cockpit can prevent retail traders from wiping out their portfolios in the markets.

We dive deep into long-term harmonic cycles to understand the current global landscape with a discussion of breaking down the 45-year and 90-year geopolitical patterns influencing US/Iran/Israel relations, the 250-year Empire Cycle, and the historical 82-84 year war cycle. In this episode, Shepheard-Walwyn host Jonathan Brown interviews Rosemary Attack, author of John Clare, Voice of Freedom, about the poet John Clare and the economic and psychological impact of the Enclosure Acts in 1809. Born in 1793, he had a patchy education, discovered poetry through Thomson’s The Seasons, and produced about 3,500 poems despite poverty and exploitative publishing practices. The conversation frames Clare’s work as a human account of the effects of enclosure—loss of common land, displacement into towns, and long-term unemployment—arguing that these changes caused material, emotional, and spiritual trauma and underpin modern economic problems.

In this episode of the Shepheard-Walwyn Podcast, Jonathan Brown speaks with Ed Dodson, a former Fannie Mae executive turned economic revolutionary. Dodson discusses his extensive experience working in America's housing system and his comprehensive archive of political and economic thought on the "land question". Warning listeners of an impending economic crash, Dodson also highlights the global housing crisis and urges a return to the principles of Henry George. He advocates for a system of cooperative individualism, which balances liberty and community while avoiding the extremes of socialism and predatory capitalism. In doing so, he suggests this approach could pave the way for a truly meritocratic society that ensures access to necessities for all individuals.

Later, Dodson reflects on the current state of Western societies, noting the discrepancy between perceived and actual levels of justice. He points to Scandinavian countries as models of more just societies, citing their strong social welfare programs and commitment to individual liberty, while still acknowledging the systemic issues rooting from the privatisation of economic rents. Dodson then emphasises the need for systemic reforms that address these underlying problems in order to achieve a truly just and fair society.

As the conversation concludes, Dodson stresses the urgent need to prepare resilient and equitable solutions ahead of the potential economic crash. He discusses the interconnectedness of various policy areas and the importance of public engagement in advocating for systemic change. Guided by the principles of cooperative individualism, Dodson continues to contribute to the dialogue on building a more just and sustainable society.

In this episode of the Shepheard-Walwyn podcast, host Jonathan Brown introduces Shepheard-Walwyn's audience to Michael Hudson, a renowned but often underrepresented economist, known for his extensive work in economic history and his influential book, 'Super Imperialism.'

Hudson's career trajectory begins with his early efforts to highlight the significance of debt in modern economies and continues with his research into ancient economic systems and their relevance to contemporary issues. Hudson's investigations into ancient societies, such as Babylonia, reveal how those civilisations managed debt and economic balance, offering a stark contrast to modern-day economic practices, particularly in the roles of debt and rentier classes in fostering economic disparity and stagnation.

His findings underscore the importance of debt cancellation and the redistribution of resources to avoid economic polarisation and social upheaval, lessons modern economies could learn from to prevent future crises. Hudson's insights, grounded in both historical analysis and modern economic critique, offer a roadmap for addressing the systemic issues at the heart of today's economic instability.

He began in industry and then began a dual career as a politician in the 1970s, eventually serving as an MP in Margaret Thatcher's government. He was transport minister in John Major’s cabinet from 1992-1997. In 1997, he stepped down from politics to return to his business career.

Today he chairs and advises a number of different companies and charities and leads a small but highly skilled team of people specialising in complex property, infrastructure and transportation projects. He also runs a business that builds more affordable homes for people in and around his adopted city, London.

Welcome back to the third podcast celebrating the second edition of Don Riley’s Taken for a Ride – Trains, Taxpayers and the Treasury. Today we are speaking with Dave Wetzel, a committed socialist and environmental campaigner. Whilst he had diametrically opposed political views to Don, they were friends and campaigned together to change government policy.

Dave was the first vice chair of Transport for London working with Ken Livingstone to spearhead a mesmerising number of improvements to London’s transport, especially buses. In this interview we look at how he and others worked to improve communities through better transport and how we could have much better cities and lower taxes if we focused on the value added by well thought out public transport investments.

Welcome back to the Shepheard-Walwyn podcast. Today we continue our exploration of the second edition of Don Riley’s classic work Taken for a Ride with a conversation with the legendary Fred Harrison. Fred worked with Don and supported his research into land value uplift and helped Don write the first edition of Taken for a Ride. In this interview he talks about Don’s research and the specific reasons why any landowner needs to understand the impact of public investments on their properties.

Welcome back to the Shepheard Walwyn Podcast. Today we begin a series to celebrate and explore the work of Don Riley. We have revised and fully updated Don’s classic work, Taken for a Ride – Trains, Taxpayers and the Treasury.

Don was an entrepreneur and landlord in Southwark, London who benefitted massively from a new underground extension, the Jubilee Line Extension in the 1990s. He was able to document through research and through his bank balance just how profitable that public investment was. As a committed entrepreneur he was incensed that he was benefitted from a taxpayer investment. Instead of quietly counting his profits he wrote a book about the corruption that he saw in the economy.

The book has been revised by Fred Harrison, the economist who supported Don writing the original book, Dave Wetzel, former Vice Chair of Transport for London and me. We also have a fascinating contribution from Steve Norris, the transport minister who pushed through Treasury approval for what has become the most profitable and impactful public transport investment London has seen since the War.

In this interview, I interview Phil Anderson, author of The Secret Life of Real Estate and Banking. Phil was friends with Don and spent time understanding his approach to investing and the work he did that you can benefit from in Taken for a Ride. Here are the time stamps.

0:00 Welcome and background to Taken for a Ride.

2:00 What did Don do to make his own money? What did he do when he saw his profits coming from the taxpayer?

8:00 Whilst public investment, private profit is wrong, you should understand what makes a good investment to maximise your own returns as a property owner.

10:40 Other reasons for buying the book to deepen your understanding of the corruption in the system.

13:20 Call to action- call your political representative to lobby to get this changed.

14:00 Thanks and close.

114 Summary and close.

Thank you for listening to this Edi Bilimoria series. I hope as an Shepheard Walwyn podcast listener you’ll agree that as a publisher we are committed to encouraging different voices and perspectives. For example, Phil Anderson and Fred Harrison on economic cycles, John Butler on spiritual practice. We think Edi’s work as I hope you’ve experienced in this series has the potential to change the dialogue in so many areas, most significantly perhaps, in the interaction between science and spirituality and a reappraisal and reintroduction of our ancient wisdom traditions into our discourse on how to add meaning to our existence.

If you have listened to this series of conversations with Edi then I hope you feel ready to make the investment in his magnus opus. It’s taken 6 months to complete these recordings. I think I am on the third or fourth reading of each of the books and they still feel like I am reading them for the first time as there’s so much new wisdom to consider on each successive reading. My conviction is that even if you much more awareness with the perennial philosophy you’ll have a similar experience.

So for the last time with Edi at least thank you for listening to the Shepheard Walwyn podcast. Be sure to connect with us at shepheardwalwyn.com and join our mailing list for updates and special offers. And if you feel it’s appropriate give us a like wherever you get your podcasts and on YT too.

So until next time keep reading!

Today we continue our mini series with Edi Bilimoria, author of the stunning 4 volume work Unfolding Consciousness. As book four is the reference book for the series, this is the penultimate dialogue with Edi. Book three entitled - Gazing through the Telescope – Man is the Measure of All Things – has a lot of ideas so we felt it was best to split the conversation into two. In this part we look at the first half of book three.

We have done our best to make this audio friendly. However, I encourage you to watch this on Youtube if you can or at least check out the diagrams in the video when you have listened. They made a massive difference to my understanding and our feedback suggests they could help you too.

We jump straight into this conversation with Edi explaining what is consciousness and why we need to focus more on relationships than on things so let’s get into the interview.

Today we welcome back Edi Bilimoria to talk about the second volume of his stunning work Unfolding Consciousness. As a quick recap, Edi is an award-winning engineer, glider pilot, concert pianist, philosopher and student of ancient wisdom – the perennial philosophy.

Book two is the shortest volume in the series so we have presented this conversation on one instalment. In many ways it could be the most impactful for the reader as it puts us as beings under the microscope. And in just over 200 densely packed pages Edi manages to integrate almost all of the wisdom traditions into one breath taking, coherent picture.

If you have an interest in the areas Edi covers, I guarantee he’ll shake your world view in the politest yet most thorough way you can imagine. My invitation is to listen to the interviews in this series and buy the books and take a year or two to digest them!

117.30 What happens when we die?

126 How our unresolved psychological baggage can hinder our journey (and what we can do about it!)

133 What’s the difference between immortality, infinity, and eternity?

136 Are we actually lumbering robots?

140 The difference between things and phenomena or things and relationships and why we won’t be taken over by robots.

Hello and welcome to the Shepheard Walwyn podcast series. My name is Jonathan Brown. Shepheard Walwyn is a campaigning book publisher based in London, England. Our purpose is to uncover and promote new ideas to society’s oldest problems. Whilst our specialty is ethical economics, something Anthony Werner, our driving force for over 40 years has pioneered, we have branched out over the years to other related areas such as the environment and the lives and work of society’s change agents.

These podcasts promote ideas we are convinced can actually help us to build a better society for all of us. So have a listen and be sure to share with your friends if you like them and tell us what you think – these are debates we all need to be a part of.

Welcome to Part Two of our interview with Michael Hudson, perhaps the world’s most influential, (but rarely acknowledged), economist. In the first episode, we looked at how economics got corrupted from industrial economics, where people made money by making things to a finance economy where a small elite group makes money by manipulating financial instruments.

In this episode, we dig into Michael’s most famous work, Super Imperialism, the Economic Strategy of the American Empire. In this book, first published in 1972, Michael described how the USA was able to force the world to use the US dollar as its default international currency – the so-called ‘dollarisation’ of the world economy which accelerated in the 1960s to today. We also look at the reverse which is happening as we speak - the rapidly accelerating de-dollarisation due to US actions against Russia and China. Essentially this is where economies around the world stop using the US dollar as their trading and reserve currency and start using other currencies instead in terms of impact. This change may be the most important economic event since the Second World War. Here are the time stamps for the conversation.

0.0 Welcome and focus on Super Imperialism

2.50 Understanding money and balance of payments deficits and how the USA avoided paying for its deficits.

13.30 What’s Michael’s view on the economic impact of the Ukraine conflict?

17.15 What’s the real cause of the grain shortage and how are we moving to a multi-polar world?

28.00 Is Biden really in charge?

30.30 Working with Herman Kahn at the Hudson Institute.

37.30 How is China dealing with the Tech Billionaires?

41.00 What are the scenarios for Russia and China?

45.30 What is your take on China’s zero COVID policies?

Welcome to the Shepheard Walwyn podcast and a two part interview with Michael Hudson, perhaps to the world’s most influential (but rarely acknowledged) economist. Michael has had a remarkable career starting off as a practical or reality-based economist working for a variety of institutions looking and how banks really behave. He looked at the balance of payments economics for David Rockefeller at Chase Manhattan Bank; worked for Herman Kahn at the Hudson Institute, and advised the US State Department on how they could fund the Vietnam War when the gold was running out. He now advises the Chinese Government on how to maintain an industrial economy and avoid the traps the US Finance economy has fallen into.

Michael’s most famous work is Super Imperialism, the Economic Strategy of American Empire but has also written extensively on ancient economies in the Near East. He is one of our longest running writers having co-written the soon to be re-released eBook, A Philosophy for a Fair Society with Kris Feder and the late GJ Miller and. Incidentally, this book is a great introduction to his whole body of work so do check it out!

In this first episode we looked at how economics got corrupted from industrial economics where people made money by making things, to a finance economy where a small elite group makes money by manipulating financial instruments. There’s some meaty topics but I promise it’s worth your time. Time stamps are as follows.

10.00 The effect of real estate and credit on the economy in today’s finance economy system.

17.00 Why did the classical economists fight so hard to get rid of the rentier class?

21.00 Why was almost everyone a socialist at the start of the 20th century? And why was the public sector seen as the 4th factor of production?

Corruption was released in 1994 but as part of our focus on the classics in the Shepheard Walwyn library we are re-releasing it as an eBook with a new introduction from Fred.

Whilst it may seem that a book published in 1994 may not have much to say about today’s economic and political challenges, we hope you’ll hear in this podcast how relevant it is to the challenges we face today.

The papers are currently crammed with the Russian oligarchs and how unfair they are. All this is true but it’s no more true than our oligarchs. In this podcast, Fred explains why we have an economic system and philosophy that guarantees the creation of oligarchs and that the same things that were done over 100 years ago to eliminate Henry George and the fairer economic ideas from the textbooks were done in Russia in the 1990s to ensure that Russia did not create a fairer economic system but that they had a “shock therapy” approach that created gross income inequality. Fast forward 30 years and we are chasing Russian billionaires around the Mediterranean trying to take their super-yachts from them.

Here's the breakdown of the conversation.

0.0 Welcome and the importance of thinking for yourself and why that was so important to Fred and Mason.

3.00 What are the main points of Mason’s exploration of how economics became corrupted?

6.00 Why the elites didn’t fear Marx and communism but did fear Henry George.

9.00 Mason and Henry George were both able to reconcile seeming opposites in economics and society.

13.30 Who was behind the corruption of economics?

16.00 What are the consequences of the corruption of economics?

23.00 Why Russia created an economy that generated oligarchs – and how the West made it happen?

30.00 How the same thing happened in South Africa- discussing the final chapter with Kris Feder.

Welcome to the third and final installment of our interview with John Butler, the 84 year old YouTube sensation and author of the Shepheard Walwyn book Wonders of Spiritual Unfoldment. Now, this conversation carries on from our last one. And we start off with one of John's most famous stories, which was when he was eating his favourite pig, or recycling love as he describes it. He also looks at the difference between sinners and consumers. Are they the same thing? And we also ponder his famous adage “to make whole, be whole”. We look at the upside of failure and depression. And we finish with the funniest additional information ever written on a CV.

We begin with asking John about eating his favourite pig!

Part two

01.30 Eating his favourite pig – recycling love. TLC in everything you do.

06.45 From tending to vegetables to tending to people. And making the economics fit your approach.

10.00 “What is your understanding of being made in “God’s image”?

18.00 How can you best handle failure and depression?

24.30 Russia and being with your own people for the first time.

32.15 The funniest “additional information” section ever written on a CV

This week we continue our conversation with John Butler, 84 year old YouTube sensation and author of Wonders of Spiritual Unfoldment.

In this conversation, we explore the experiences he writes about in the first part of Wonders. We explore his relationship with nature, his time as one of the first organic farmers in the 1960s and collaborated with people like EF Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful and Lady Balfour, co-founder of the Soil Association.

We also get into how he sees his spiritual work as an evolution of his farming work.

This conversation follows on from our meet the author interview that took place in his favourite church in Bakewell. To continue we made our way to the top of John’s favourite hill just outside Bakewell. This gave us some wind and insect noise so apologies in advance for that. The place has held a special meaning for john since he was a boy so I begin the interview by asking where he’s taken us and what the place means to him.

Here’s a summary of what we discussed.

00.00 Welcome and Introduction

01.50 Nature as John’s first Church – seeking space.

05.00 John in Africa – Space, Freedom and Spiritual Connection.

11.00 Organic Farming, TLC and raising soil consciousness to raising human consciousness.

14.00 Always knowing he wanted to be a farmer

19.00 Travelling to South America and making friends with people who want to kill you.

24.30 Inheriting Three Acres at Bicker Fen, Lincolnshire – Can you farm without destruction?

27.30 Expressing your love for the earth through organic farming.

31.00 How to align intention and purpose.

36.00 Thank you.

Welcome to the final instalment of the Dom Frisby interview. In this conversation we discuss the challenges facing governments around the world and the rise of what some call the “Sovereign individual” also known as the digital nomad.

We consider the implications of increasing government spending with reduced tax revenues.

We look at what countries can do to maintain or even increase tax revenue when those who generate the most (taxable) income can move between borders seemingly at will to avoid them. This then leads us to a discussion of crypto currencies.

Dom was an early adopter in the space writing what I believe was the first book on bitcoin with a major publisher. In spite of this, we find out why Dom isn’t worth hundreds of millions of dollars today (even though his investments should be). It’s a heart breaker!

We then finish with what Dom is working on now - essentially an innovative audio experience/musical book and a new way to for him to help investors.

Here’s the time stamps:

1.30 What is the problem with government spending and taxation for companies and soon to be sovereign individuals?

11.30 Writing the first book on Bitcoin with a major publisher.

13.20 What’s Dom’s current perspective on crypto?

14.50 Why isn’t Dom a gazillionaire even though he was an early investor in bitcoin?

16.00 What are Dom’s current projects? A new audio genre and an investor newsletter.

Welcome to part three of the interview with Dom Frisby. I am your host Jonathan Brown.

In this podcast we continue our conversation with investor comedian about how Dom measures freedom by the size of the government.

1.30 The bigger the government, the more damage it does. And how freedom and individual initiative creates brilliance.

7.00 Incompetence and corruption in government.

9.00 What is likely to happen if we dramatically reduced government?

10.30 Taxation and major events in history – The American Civil War.

16.00 Some controversial points about Abraham Lincoln’s behaviour in the war.

19.00 Why Britain was able to outlaw slavery.

Welcome back to the podcast. I am your host Jonathan Brown. Today we continue our conversation with Dom Frisby. We move the conversation into Dom’s great documentary about Adam Smith and the Edinburgh fringe – essentially an exploration of how individuals can self organise to create brilliance than the elite can plan it. We then take a look at Dom’s views on education and how we can create much more space for choice and self-organising.

I then look at Dom’s free documentary about Adam Smith and give some pointers on what to look out for.

Here’s the time stamps for this conversation.

1.30 Welcome back – Adam Smith, the Edinburgh fringe and self-organising economies.

9.00 The importance of voluntary action to create a freer and fairer economic system.

11.00 Education and how we could improve outcomes through more choice.

16.00 The difficulty in predicting collapse even though it’s obvious a system can’t support itself.

Some thoughts on watching Dom’s excellent documentary on Adam Smith.

We talk about Dom’s documentary in this part of the talk. I encourage you to watch it and to consider there are things you could do to increase individual actions and choice in your community. The Fringe was founded due to restrictions on who was allowed to perform at the Edinburgh Festival. If you weren’t posh enough, if you weren’t worthy as determined by the organisers you weren’t allowed to take part. So, the first acts went there – at their own cost – and offered something they felt people would like to see – and they were right.

It's easy to get into the weeds with Smith and the classical economists but Dom’s work makes it much clearer. So look at how the Fringe developed to become the economy and how one comedian managed to change the economics and format of the Fringe forever – and how finding a way to give away your service (in this case a comedy act) meant people were finally able to make money.

It starts with putting Adam Smith in context. Whilst he’s credited with effectively founding English-speaking economics, his work is rarely studied anymore. Smith is like Darwin: people quote him but hardly anyone has read the actual work.

Fascinatingly, Smith wrote A Theory of Moral Sentiments as an advertisement for his lecture series. He also talks about how Smith was able to travel around Europe learning from some of the greatest thinkers in Europe.

There are some great interviews with some of the UK’s top comedians and the most popular acts at the Fringe. At the heart though is a model for entrepreneurial action and how economies can self regulate.

You can watch Dom’s ode to Adam Smith and the Edinburgh Fringe here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6e6TpIrba0&t=48s

What’s also worth a listen is how the film came about and how the problem of centrally planned media is still alive and well. Entrepreneurship is essentially problem solving or “scratching your own itch” and finding a market.

Hello and welcome back to the podcast. My name is Jonathan Brown. Today I am speaking with Dom Frisby, perhaps the worlds first economic commentator/comedian. Dom has been a friend of SW and PSE for a long time, hosting talks with Phil but also being crucial to the superb documentary The Four Horsemen, something we know our readers and subscribers have enjoyed.

A short time ago we interviewed Dom to look at all his work. Whilst he isn’t an SW author we think his work is worth time to look at as he has an interesting perspective on precious metals, crypto, the markets in general and political systems.

In this first podcast we look at how Dom became the world’s first economist-investor-comedian, how he became a libertarian - subtitled “why Cuban fathers want their daughters to be hookers”!

We also look at how well intended government actions can undermine and even eliminate personal responsibility of the citizens they are trying to help, the importance of 1909 to the First World War and why people of every political persuasion seem to dislike the BBC.

Here's the time stamps for this session.

  • Welcome, how you got going and how did a comedian get a column in MoneyWeek?

9.30 Where did your libertarian views come from?

11.00 The Four Horsemen documentary and Life After the State.

17.45 Why Cuban fathers want their daughters to be hookers (the unintended actions of governments.)

22.00 How the governments undermine personal responsibility (unintended consequences part two)

29.00 When did things go really wrong? WW1 and the rachet effect.

33.00 Why do all political parties resent the BBC?

Thanks for listening to the first part in this interview with Dom. For more information check out the links to his content below – his youtube channels and his new investor subscription service. Also check out the other episodes when they are released.

My guest today is Heather Remoff, author of What’s Sex Got to Do with It? Darwin, Love, Lust and the Anthropocene. Heather first discovered flaws in Darwin's theory of sexual selection during her doctoral research in the 1970s and has spent the last 40 years developing her understanding of it and related fields, including economics.

What’s Sex Got to Do with It? is her attempt to add insight to Darwin’s work so that it can accommodate advances in genetics and in female mating choice – advances that were unavailable to Darwin when he wrote The Descent of Man, his sequel (if you will) to the Origin of Species and his exploration of sexual selection. In this conversation, we learn about all the work Heather has done that took her sociology work and her PhD in anthropology at Rutgers and beyond.

The timeline for the podcast is as follows.

00.0 Welcome

2.00 How Heather got into anthropology and evolutionary theory through sociology, including testosterone levels in women and what it does to leadership standing.

8.30 Interviewing women to find out the traits that most influenced their choice of reproductive partner.

10.30 Getting beyond material resources and being saved by the tape.

16.30 What studying economics taught her about evolution and sexual selection and the link between economics and inequality.

23.30 Who are her ideal readers for the book?

26.00 What was the hardest part about writing the book?

31.00 The puzzle of concealed ovulation and sexual receptivity and how it affects female choice.

35.00 The extraordinary importance of chromosome fusion as our abrupt origin story.

38.00 Final thoughts and close.

Be sure to look out for our other interviews with Heather as we explore her ideas in more detail.

Today’s podcast (Part 1) is highly topical as he recommends more preferable taxation ideas than the government taxing the poor when the billionaires have made a fortune this pandemic. He argues convincingly that a wealth tax or land tax would have left everyone better off than when the pandemic started.

This week we are speaking with John Butler, one of our most popular authors at Shepheard Walwyn and perhaps the most unlikely YouTube star, you can ever hope to meet. John is a retired farmer and is well into his 80s. He published The Wonders of Spiritual Unfoldment in 2008 which tells his life story and shares the realisations he experienced during a lifetime of meditation. He began to get attention after his 80th year when he did an interview for a show called Conscious TV with Ian McNay. This now has approaching 10m views on all platforms. In response to questions he received he set up the YT channel Spiritual Unfoldment where he now has 200k subscribers. His down to earth, honest and reassuring message not to mention his extraordinary voice has been of great help to people during the pandemic. So it was an absolute pleasure to sit down with him in his favourite church in Bakewell, Derbyshire where he still meditates twice a day.

Here’s the summary of our first conversation where we discuss how and why he came to write Wonders. Please note, John is extremely patient and thoughtful and he can pause a LONG time before responding to questions. We did think about editing them out but decided to leave them in as they are part of his approach to things. Whilst it can be disconcerting at first to ask a question and not get an answer immediately, it’s wonderful that John thinks so deeply about his answers.

00.00 Welcome and set up.

02.00 How did he come to write the book? And how have sales developed.

05.45 Conscious TV and the interview on stillness that went viral.

https://youtu.be/fZXhPmHPoNo 07.00 Releasing the other 10 books – the benefits of letter writing and his process of publishing the books. Loving his work.

09.00 Meditation and his realisations – how they come into being. Going beyond the thinking process. 11.45 The structure of the book – 0-160 John’s adventures – 160 – 400 the realisations.

14.00 Silence is always with us in the background. What is Silence?

17.30 What surprised you about the process of writing?

19.30 Embracing and getting beyond life’s failures – one disaster after another! 22.00 Finding God or being found by God?

26.00 Advice on getting the most from the book – read them slowly! 29.00 Is there anything you want to say to someone considering buying the book? (maybe the longest pause in the history of podcasts!).

31.20 Close and thank you.

Until next time, keep reading!

What's so special about this rhino? Find out why and about Shirley Galligan's mission to inform our next generation of conservationists...

Munu is a story of hope in the face of adversity. As one of the world’s rarest black rhinoceros, Munu was tragically blinded and could not have survived in the wild if it was not for the  White Lion Foundation who rescued him, offering him a sanctuary and lifetime care in South Africa. His story, as the most special rhino in the world, will appeal to children, with its humorous tone as well as promoting the charity’s ethos of integrity and kindness. Munu’s story raises the profile of the charity’s ambitious vision for the future of global wildlife conservation, at the centre of which, are children today, the conservationists of the future. Shirley Galligan’s career began in the music industry, promoting major international recording artists, before choosing to use her skills to further her real loves: animal welfare, wildlife and compassionate conservation.

John Tippett has been a student and teacher of economics and philosophy for over 50 years.  His book, A Philosopher’s Take on Economics, distills the wisdom he has gathered in that time and weaves them together in a startlingly original way.

In the book he argues that economics has profoundly lost its way. Not only has it lost its purpose, but it’s forgotten that it should actually have one. And whilst economics started with philosophy at its heart, it has ignored its roots and so has cultivated a strange, dismal philosophy that serves only the few. John’s approach is as effective as it is simple – he takes us back to first principles. He argues that economics and the “economy” is meant to serve all of us. Specifically, its actual role is to offer everyone the practical possibility to live creative, happy lives.

In this second podcast, we start with why economics is so flawed and why it doesn’t get better.  We then look at how you can apply the practical philosophy at the heart of true economics. We finish with what we can do to actually “build back better” for all of us, as the global economy recovers from lockdown.

To celebrate the launch of the second edition of his book, we are releasing two podcasts. In the first one, John explains how he came to both economics and philosophy and discovered his calling for helping others. He explains how he came to the realisation that economics and philosophy are actually inseparable if you are wish to apply them in any practical, positive way.

In the second podcast, we start with why economics is so flawed and why doesn’t it get better. We then look at how you can apply the practical philosophy at the heart of true economics. We finish with what we can do to actually “build back better” for all of us, as the global economy recovers from lockdown.

Fred is on record for predicting the start of the next major crash to be 2026-28. In this final podcast of the series, he looks ahead and considers four major challenges facing us in the UK – recovering from the pandemic and handling Brexit; how to handle the rise of online retail and the effect it has on our communities and the position of China in the global economy.

In 1990, Fred had an opportunity to work with the former USSR as it transitioned from a communist economy. All assets were in state hands so it would seem that having an economic system built for the people would be an obvious choice. It was obvious and so it was stopped. As Fred explains, having a successful and fair economy went against the economic interests of the few.

Closer to home, Fred lobbied the Blair government, who were claiming they wanted to chart a “Third Way.”  As you will learn, they wanted nothing of the sort and so they presided over the largest economic collapse in generations. Having faced the reality of a political elite who was not interested in doing the right thing, Fred explains what he did next.

In Part II of the interview with Anthony Werner, the publisher who has led Shepheard Walwyn since 1979, we look into some of the other works in the Shepheard Walwyn catalogue.  The jigsaw or tapestry that is Shepheard Walwyn today starts with economic and social justice that Anthony learned from his father in South Africa. However, he has also published many other works that explore related themes such as ecology and spirituality - perhaps one of the most famous authors in this area is John Butler.

Anthony Werner has led Shepheard Walwyn for over 40 years.  He took over from the founder, Christopher Shepheard Walwyn in 1979. When the firm ran out of capital, Anthony invested his own money to keep it going and began publishing books that he felt needed to be published because of their importance to society.

In these two podcasts, we are going to focus first on his work in “ethical economics” as he describes it, focusing on his near 40 year collaboration with Fred Harrison, one of our authors. We explore how he came to the principles that are articulated so well by the authors he supports. We also consider how he appears to have been guided by a series of curiously serendipitous incidents throughout his life or, as he describes it, being guided out of the blue.

The richest people in the world, through the World Economic Forum in Davos, are arguing for a “Great Reset.” This would mean that normal people own nothing and that resources are concentrated in the hands of an elite. In this podcast, Fred explains how we could have a People’s Reset using the economic ideas popularised in the English speaking world by Henry George, a US born social campaigner. It looks as if we have lots of problems in society. In fact, we have only one…

Fred Harrison is known as a broadcaster and social campaigner – if he is known at all. And yet, he has predicted the last two major economic crashes (the 1990s and 2008-10) more accurately than anyone in the world. Amazingly he wasn’t on TV or advising governments on how to handle it. He was ignored and frozen out of the dialogue of recovery. The publisher Shepheard Walwyn is proud to have published Fred’s books for nearly 40 years.

In this series of podcasts, Fred talks about his journey from newspaperman to economist to social campaigner. He explains how he can do what others say is impossible and why those in control persist with an inferior and dangerous set of economic beliefs. He also offers ideas for what could be a truly great reset, if we based our economic system on fairness and science.
