Monk in Ten: Recent Episodes

Monk

I’m Erika, but my family calls me Monk. I’ve lived long enough to see that change is constant. But one thing that hasn’t changed is my constant curiosity! I’m contemplative - and I always have been. I invite you to join me for ten minute musings that reflect on my life experiences and challenge our perceptions of societal stigmas. Along the way, I might be contentious. I might be controversial. But one thing I can guarantee - I will make you think. Get in on the conversation! This is Monk in Ten.

I began the fostering journey with one goal in mind - to provide a safe home for children who were experiencing difficult circumstances in their own homes. Over the course of my time spent fostering, I had more than 40 children pass through our home - some for a few nights, some for a few months, and one particular child for what seemed like a lifetime. Who would have imagined that my greatest heartbreak would come not from the death of a loved one, but from the departure of a child who had been so very loved. Join me as I contemplate my experience and my hope that in some way I was "fostering change."

Why are people perfectly content with consuming  romance,  love, and kissing in movies and television, then criticize these very actions when evidenced in the lives of real people? Have we become a society that is far more comfortable with PDA on a screen than we are with PDA in person? Join me as I contemplate PDA in this week's episode of Monk in Ten.

How often is racial stereotyping at play in our daily lives? Are most people immune to subtle racial stereotypes? Join me as I reflect on my recent experience with chopsticks (and stereotypes?)

Have you ever played Spades? It's a card game that is played in pairs.  Last night, as I lay restless in bed, reflecting on the events of my receent past, I began to contemplate the game of spades. It occurred to me that the unique challenges of spades hold many parallels to love relationships -  I call these parallels my "love lessons in spades."

Let’s be real - nobody wants to be considered an introvert - at least according to how the world tends to view introversion.  We strange introverts are walking among you social butterflies of society, and you might not even recognize our introverted tendencies.  Never fear! We won't ruin your party - provided you're willing to invite us!

We’re all friends here, right?  So I’m really putting myself out there today, and posing a very personal question that I’ll ask you to ponder with me. What I want to ask you, very seriously, is… are you down with O.P.P.?

Before you get any ideas regarding what this podcast is about - get yo mind outta the gutter. This isn’t a contemplation on open relatioship or swingers,  it’s another kind all together.
