real talk tuesday is a podcast normalizing messy and candid conversations related to self-growth, self-love & navigating life in your 20's. hosted by sierra scott, a certified life coach & ex-vangelical, this podcast aims to cut through the surface levelness found within much of the self-help industry & normalize a more human, messy & authentic way toward growth. this podcast is a genuine deep dive into her journey of self-discovery & is intended to serve as a reminder that no matter where you find yourself in life; you are not alone.
in today's episode we are chatting all about a theme i find that has come up a lot in my 1:1 coaching sessions lately and that theme is the topic of self-responsibility. we talk about the importance of knowing what is within your control vs. not, the importance of allowing yourself to feel uncomfortable in the pursuit of growth, taking messy action and so much more.
so whether you find yourself subconsciously blaming a million and one things or people for where you are at in life or you're just ready to make a shift, then this is the episode for you to help you go from complacency to self-ownership.

in today's episode we are chatting about the headline making documentary on amazon prime called, "happy shiny people" which showcases the life of the Duggar family who are known for their hit TLC reality show, "19 (etc) kids & counting" as well as brings to light Bill Gothard, the institute of basic life principles and the influence they both have had over generations of people who are wanting to live for God.
this isn't going to be the same kind of commentary you've potentially listened to on this documentary. in today's show we are going to be connecting the dots and showing the ways in which IBLP (institute of basic life principles) & evangelicalism aren't as different as some would think. whether it be purity culture, abuse of power or even some of the ways in which we've learned to look at the world; you may find in today's episode that the modern evangelical church has a lot more common with IBLP than many would like to take account for.
the purpose of today's episode is to expand the conversation; whether you are within the church or out of it so that we can make any and all spaces a safer place for all people to exist.
this episode includes a feature from one of our very own listeners who shares her own personal journey of growing up primarily in the SBC (southern baptist) as well as other independent fundamentalist bible churches. she shares her experience of how growing up in purity culture impacted her, whether it be through purity ring ceremonies, the books she read or even her experience of slowly recognizing the relationship she was once in practicing for marriage was actually toxic and not healthy.

on today's episode we are chatting all about hustle culture, our society's obsession with constant productivity and the glamorization of workaholism. if you've been following me on social media as of recently you will know that i have felt beyond burnt out these last few weeks + it's got me reflecting a lot about my relationship to both work and productivity. we chat about what hustle culture is, what differentiates toxic productivity from mere passion + hard work, the ways in which our obsession with productivity is negatively impacting our mental health + what we can do about it.
we also get a bit vulnerable as i share some new inner revelations i've had in my personal life as of late which speak to some of the ways my experience with evangelicalism + the pain i experienced when leaving it has influenced my bend towards workaholism.
so if you find yourself feeling exhausted by life and need that extra bit of encouragement that it's okay to take a break, then this episode is going to be for you.

in today's episode we are having a casual and candid conversation on the everyday realities of navigating life in your twenties. we chat about the grief that comes with not being where you once thought you would be, struggling with imposter syndrome, social media minimizing us all to two dimensional objects and so much more.
this week is a bit of a mind dump as life this month is kinda crazy! colby & i are in the middle of moving, i'm in the middle of a job transition and intentionally trying to not get burned out by life. so let's talk about all that's on my mind cause i know i'm not the only one feeling these things.

today we are chatting about all the things i feel like we don't talk about when we talk about, "self-love". it's another candid episode where i address some of the problematic ways that both self-care and self-love have been marketed as well as talk about recognizing the limitations of self-love and self-care as a means of cultivating a deeper sense of liberation. is it true that self-love is the potion that'll save us from our problems? has self-care become another five steps for us to hustle for our wholeness?
what if we learned to talk about self-love and self-care in a different way; a way that allowed more room for our humanness rather than made us believe our humanness was the very thing in which we needed to be saved from?
i also share from you guys the listeners some of the biggest misconceptions you've found as it relates to self-love.

in today's episode we are chatting all about fixing vs, healing oneself and understanding the difference. whether it be from condensing healing into a mere five steps or boxing it into a one size fits all approach, there's a lot of ways in which self-help can lead us toward believing that healing is all about cultivating the perfect morning routine, drinking green juice or attending a weekly yoga class. yet, what happens when those things too fall short + we are left at one point or another feeling just as broken as before? is the problem us or is the problem the five step system in which the journey of self-growth was marketed to us as? join in as we also dive into some of the correlations between toxic self-help + religious fundamentalism. it's an episode you don't want to miss!

in today's episode we are chatting all about the aftermath of my deconstruction journey + where i am today with it all. if you haven't listened to last weeks episode, definitely check it out as today's topic will be building upon the story of my deconstruction journey as shared in the previous episode. as mentioned last week, the aftermath of deconstruction for me was in some ways more difficult than the deconstruction itself. we're going to talk all about the things so many of us lose as a result of deconstruction, navigating friendships + relationships outside of an evangelical lens + some of the nuggets of wisdom that have helped me piece my life together since then.
woven throughout today's episode, you will notice a couple of voice memos from you guys the listeners who have agreed to share bits of your journey of religious deconstruction. featuring you guys in this way on the podcast is something i'm really excited to explore as i hope to help give each of you who listen a platform to share parts of your story if you so choose. thank you to those who participated in today's podcast episode!

today is the most vulnerable episode yet because we are chatting all about my personal journey of religious deconstruction. we talk about my upbringing, the time in my life which led me to seek out something beyond myself, my deep & unexpected dive into evangelicalism as a nineteen year old girl, the five year journey in which that took me on as well as how & why i eventually left it.
along with sharing my journey i also provide some spontaneous commentary on the insanity of church camps, "altar calls", living life continuously with a "battle" mindset, and how a buzzfeed video made me cry out of fear i was no longer a, "true" christian.
the purpose of today's episode is not to sway you any which way; the purpose of today's episode is to give a real and vulnerable look into my life & the things that have made me who i am today, to build genuine connections with each of you as well as to provide some context as to why i do the work i do. as with any of the episodes i create, take what resonates & leave the rest.

in today's episode we are chatting all about letting go of the idea that it is our job or responsibility to change, fix, heal or save those around us. we talk about how love that is tied with the motive to change the individual receiving it will always be manipulative in nature + why holding unto relationships or friendships out of potential is not serving to them or us.

in today's episode we chat about how the biggest thing that is holding you back is not actually something or someone out there but rather it's you. we talk about what it means + what it looks like, practically speaking, to move through self-sabotage, move through that which we are quick to label as, "triggers" and how to take action in creating a life that brings us a sense of purpose and joy. if you've found yourself feeling frustrated by life, stuck, unmotivated or like your life hasn't quite turned out in the way you once envisioned, then this podcast episode is the loving kick in the ass that you need.
