This week on the Gadgets for Families Tech show, Jason and I had a pretty lengthy and in-depth conversation about the concept of Digital Nomadism.
- What is digital nomadism?
- Would we consider it?
- What cultural shifts are or need to take place?
Those are some of the questions we discussed and I thought it was a good topic for this audience as well. I hope you get something out of it.
If you would like to hear the whole conversation you can do so on YouTube or your podcast player.

Welcome to Leader's Lift. I'm your host Greg Cunningham.
Today I want to announce that I'm going to be putting a pause on this podcast. I've got several other priorities hitting right now and this is one of the things I have on my plate that falls below the cut off point in my priority list.
I don't think this will be a permanent hiatus and I'm going to leave everything in place to be able to drop a random episode if I have a burning topic that I just want to share with everyone. For the next while, I just won't be committing to any sort of a regular publication schedule.
If you have enjoyed the show, I'd love to get that feedback and if there is something I should consider in the future, please let me know that as well. You can find a contact form on my website at www.mtneboconsulting.com.
I hope that over the last year you have found at least a few things that you are using today to get more out of your own life or to help someone else do so. That was my goal with this. If you have any stories you'd like to share, I'd love to hear those as well.
Until you hear from me again, I hope you will go out there and keep lifting.

This week I spend a few minutes talking about why I believe curiosity is an important, yet underdeveloped skill.
Key Takeaways
- Curiosity is more than wanting to know something.
- It's about wanting to know and then use that knowledge to get more out of life.
- Everything changes and if you aren't curious, you may just get left behind.
- Without curiosity, you will never know if you are really getting the most out of life.
- Curiosity can be developed.
- If we put in the effort to develop curiosity as a skill, we will move forward down the path to our most potential.
Join me for this curious (pun intended) discussion.

One of my keys this year is figuring out how to be more deliberate about the most important things I'm working on. If you have that same goal, then a tool that may help you do so is to figure out what kind of journaling works for you.
Key Takeaways
- Journaling has clear advantages like getting thoughts somewhere we can refer to or helping us brainstorm or sort through ideas.
- First, understand why and what you want to journal.
- If you are just starting out with journaling, keep it simple.
- Like your mvp, start with little wins that help you build momentum.
- My journaling "system" has evolved over time and yours should too.
Join me for the discussion on how I plan to be more deliberate in 2024 through journaling.

- Welcome 00:00
- Intro 00:27
- Setting the Stage 02:17
- Examples 05:01
- Benefits for Leaders 06:45
- General Benefits 08:31
- Wrap Up 11:45

- Saying no is one way to make significant progress on the path to our most potential and to avoid false progress.
- Leaders and those they lead can benefit from the leader saying no to things and delegating.
- Overall we will see less stress and regret if we focus on the things that matter most.

- Meaningful progress comes when we focus on the things that will make the biggest difference and help us move forward down our chosen path
- We must learn to plan and prioritize the most important things
- Our MVP (minimum viable plan) must have the important things, the things that we just need to get done and the ways we will avoid just being busy.

- Build momentum early
- Identify early opportunities to identify if you are on the right path or if you need to course correct

This is part one of what I hope will be a four part series covering tools and concepts you can use if you are going to be involved in anyway in an end of year assessment, new years resolutions or anything like that. Topic one is the dangers of comparisons. Let's talk about different kinds of comparisons, why they are a problem, what we can do about them and how this applies to end of year stuff.

- Comparing anything to anything comes almost as easily as breathing.
- Comparing ourselves to anyone else is a big no no.
- Social media comparisons can cause huge issues.
- When comparing ourselves to ourselves, we need to be deliberate and only do good comparisons.
- If we work at it, we can limit how often comparisons take us down a rabbit hole.
- Avoiding comparisons is a good way to improve the quality of our end of year assessments.

Summary
A little bit different topic for this week's episode. This is an initial discussion about the voices that we listen to or the sources of information that we allow to influence our lives and eventually help us form our own voices. There are so many voices, way too many our negative and yet we still need to find a way to sort through them, avoid comparisons and find confidence in our own voice that will help us get where we need to go. So let's discuss.

- What Voices There Are 03:09
- The Challenge with the Voices 03:50
- The Challenge Comparison 06:25
- How We Should Think About This 09:11
- Wrap Up 19:10
Key Takeaways
- There are more voices today than there ever have been
- Many, if not most of those voices are negative.
- We get overwhelmed with them and we end up in comparison land which is never good.
- We need to sort through these voices in order to find our own.
- We need to avoid comparisons to anyone or anything else.
- We also need to find the confidence in our own voice so it can move us to the place of most potential

Summary
The holidays are practically upon us and I had a conversation with my g4f co-host and that made me realize that I wanted to be more deliberate about the holidays this year. Let me explain. As an introvert, there are a lot of things that happen during the holiday season that make it more difficult to keep my energy well at a good level. So this week, let's talk about what that means and share some ideas on how to deal with it.
Key Topics & Time Stamps
- Welcome 00:00

- Introvert Recap 02:34
- Holiday Stressors 04:30
- Ideas on How to Deal 10:36
- Wrap Up 16:20
Key Takeaways
- Being an introvert is not about liking or not liking people.
- It's about activities and situations that drain or refill our wells.
- There are certain things during the holidays that may put more of a drain on our wells.
- Doing some analysis, planning and taking some deliberate actions can help us to better deal with the situations.

Summary
I threw out a survey on social media on what I should cover for this weeks topic. If you didn't see that, make sure you follow me on Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn (where I publish the most stuff). The topic ended up being Thriving vs. Surviving. Now the reality is that it's not a one or the other situation and we all fall somewhere in between. So let's spend the next few minutes talking about what it means, why its important that we know where we are and then what to do once we know.
Key Topics & Time Stamps
- Welcome 00:00
- Intro 00:27
- Why This is Important 02:56
- What Does It Mean 05:48
- A Few Thoughts and Examples 11:18
- How Do We Know Where We Are 14:23
- What to Do About It 17:58
- Wrap Up 26:34
Key Takeaways
- It's important to know we are on the slider between thriving and surviving and to be able to help others identify where they are.
- Happiness and moving forward towards our goals are a couple of indicators that can help us identify our placement.
- Once we know where we are, we need to be deliberate and have a plan to stay in thrive or to start moving towards thrive.
- Helping others, especially the younger generations, to have an opportunity to thrive is one of our key roles as a leader.

Summary
This last week I have been wrestling with a few topics I believe are related. For all of them, it's about finding a good middle ground versus going to extremes. So this week's episode is about the balance forcing things and being complacent, self care vs. just powering thru and then working on the guilt that comes when you don't go full throttle all the time. Join me for the conversation.
Key Topics & Time Stamps
- Welcome 00:00
- Intro 00:33
- Forcing vs. Complacency 03:44
- Self Care vs. Powering Through 13:42
- Working on the Guilt 22:11
- Wrap Up 27:21
Key Takeaways
- It's very easy to go to extremes in any of these areas but that is generally not the answer.
- The problem with forcing things is that we make mistakes and quite often we make things worse.
- The problem with complacency is that there is no growth and we have a hard time seeing the train wreck that may be coming.
- Self care requires a good balance because it can make things much better or much worse.
- If you need some self care, identify the key things that must be done right now vs. those that can wait.
- If you feel guilty for not going all out all the time, don't.
- Easier said than done so it's something you need to work on.

Summary
I had another pretty large personal experience last week that reminded me how important it is for us to be more deliberate in life. I was pretty sick and then got the word that my dad had passed away. Even with that, I still struggled to apply some of the lessons I have been sharing with y'all. So today, I thought I'd take a slightly different approach to being deliberate during hard experiences. I hope you will get something out of this episode.
Key Topics & Time Stamps
- Welcome 00:00
- Intro 00:14
- Disclaimer & My Default 02:18
- Examples 03:42
- Focus on the Present 07:00
- Questions to Ask Yourself 08:35
- Reflections 11:20
- A Bit of Future Focus 15:58
- Wrap Up 21:20
Key Takeaways
- Being deliberate during or even right after tough experiences will help us get more out of them and be better because of them.
- Try and be present
- Ask yourself questions like:
- What can I learn from this situation that I may not learn any other way
- What could I be doing now that I can't normally do or may never get an opportunity to do again
- How will I be better because of this
- Reflect on:
- What matters most right now?
- What matters most in my life in general?
- Are there course corrections I'd like to make?
- Slight Future Focus:
- What will be different when this too passes?
- How will I apply what I have learned?
- How will I be better prepared for something similar happening in the future?

Summary
Instead of waiting around for perfection as I discussed last week, we should be more deliberate and think about when good enough is good enough. In this week's episode of Leaders Lift, I'll talk about what that means and how we can shift our thinking so we aren't sitting around waiting for perfection that will probably never arrive. Join me for the conversation. And if you haven't listened to episode 28, maybe do that first.
Key Topics & Time Stamps
- Welcome 00:00
- Intro 00:18
- Deliverable Perfection 01:54
- My Version of Agile 03:36
- What Does Good Enough is Good Enough Mean 06:58
- Perfection Phrases vs. Good Enough Phrases 08:08
- How to We Get There 10:21
- Wrap up 17:08
Key Takeaways
- Waiting around for perfection means we may wait around forever
- Good enough means that I have enough information, knowledge or training.
- Or that there are enough planets aligned that I have a reasonable chance of success.
- And sometimes good enough may also mean that this is as good of an opportunity as I'm going to get.
- We get there by:
- Identifying what matters most
- Simplifying and not overthinking
- Having a flexible plan
- Getting started
- Failing and succeeding quickly

Most of us either sit around waiting for the perfect moment or opportunity to take that next step down the path to our most potential, or we try and "make it happen". Neither of those extremes will consistently work out for us. Instead, we need to be deliberate, take advantage of the present and diligently watch for the right (not perfect) opportunity. Let's discuss.

- Intro 00:15
- Examples 02:04
- Why This is Not Good 09:03
- What To Do About It 11:00
- Wrap Up 22:30
Key Takeaways
- That perfect opportunity you are waiting for will probably never come.
- Forcing the issue is probably just as bad as sitting around and waiting.
- You need to take advantage of the present.
- Sometimes good enough is good enough.
- Most decisions aren't permanent.
- Look for the right opportunity to move forward, instead of the perfect one.

We are all going to face hard times in our lives. In general, most people will follow one of two extreme paths. They will try and power through it or they will run away. I don't think either of those is the right approach. Like most things in life, I believe we should be much more deliberate in these situations. Lets discuss just what that means.

I've been asked to do an episode about camping for a while so I thought I would drop a bonus for both Leaders Lift and Gadgets for Families users but keep the whole theme of getting more out of life.
In this episode I talk about how I get more out of life through camping and I hope that you can either tie some of these principles back to a current hobby or a hobby you would like to pick up or get the camping bug (or both).
If you'd like to see or hear more bonus episodes like this, use the feedback link below.

This week I got thinking about how all the negativity in the world starts to influence the stories we tell ourselves and makes them negative as well. These are stories about ourselves, others and our lives. The problem is that they are rarely founded in reality and they can have a serious impact on our lives. They distract us from what is most important, drain our wells and really pull us off the path to our most potential. Let's discuss.

- Intro 00:13
- Main Topic 00:39
- Ways to Work on Our Negative Stories 27:59

- It is almost always easier to focus on the negative versus the positive
- We tell ourselves negative stories about others, our lives and ourselves

Summary
Over the last several months I've been pushing it pretty hard. There has been a lot going on trying to get this podcast and my tech one (Gadgets for Families) up and running. That's on top of my business consulting business and the craziness that comes with the end of a school year. So just a lot going on. When I combine that with with my drive to always want to be doing something meaningful and my perfectionist tendencies, it's been pretty intense. Take those experiences and combine them with some of the topics I have covered like dialing it back, knowing yourself, course correcting as well as some things I have been reading and I got thinking about how I'm doing. Not business progress or anything like that. Just how am I personally doing.
With that background, I'd like to spend our time today talking about caring for ourselves. Storytime and lessons learned from it are first and then let's talk about how we as leaders sometimes don't realize we are not taking care of ourselves, the impact that has on us and those that depend on us and more.

- Being Selfish 21:31
- Replenishing 24:07
- Tying It All Together 28:43
- When It Won't Work 32:20
- Wrap Up 34:36
Key Takeaways
- Great leaders of all types tend to focus on those they lead, but we cannot neglect our own self care.
- There are a lot of folks that depend on us and draw from our well (including ourselves)
- Don't be selfish, but don't neglect yourself either.
- Find something you love to do that also replenishes
- Make taking care of yourself part of your own personal development plan

Today I'm going to focus in on tying several previous topics together and add to them a bit of courage. We have talked about fear, trusting others, the power of optimism and positivity and today I'll like to tie those into courage and faith. Now when I say faith, I'm not talking about the kind of religious faith you might associate that word with. I want to talk more about faith in ourselves and others, that's probably more about trust vs. the more traditional definition of faith, and the pluses and minuses (spoiler - this kind of faith will fail at times) and then talk about how courage fits into all of this. Join me for the discussion.
Apologies for some of the audio. Recording after a spring bike ride is interesting and the editing more so.

Have you given any thought to retirement? For those of you early in your careers that might not even be something that you can even imagine. For those of us that are closer to retirement than we are to our first job, you do start thinking. I'm not talking about trying to plan for financial retirement. I'm talking about thinking about what you will do when you don't have a clock to punch, team to manage, deadlines to meet, commute, etc..
I have found myself asking how I will make my time once I retire relevant. That's what I want to talk about today. Let's talk about what that means, how it can make a difference in our lives and even a bit about how to find it. And this won't be just for retirement but it's something that can make a difference every day.

- We have meaningful purposes that are a means to an end.
- We have simpler purposes that help motivate us day to day.

Summary
Soccer season is about to wrap up here in Utah. As I have watched my sons team play, there have been several things I have observed. One them that has stood out, not just with their team but all of the teams, coaches, fans, etc. It's something that I think has always been a part of sports. That's how much those involved seem to focus on things that they have absolutely no control over.
This isn't just a sports problem but in life, we tend to do the same thing. We get hung up on things we can't control and lose sight of the things that we can control, or at least influence. That's what I'd like to spend the next half hour or so talking about.
I'll start with a story around two games we played against the same team. Then I'll have a book recommendation for you. After that, I'd like to talk about how much control we really have and how that relates to my experience with emergency preparedness. Then we can do some heavy lifting around focusing on what we can control and wrap up.

Let's spend a few minutes talk about why and when it's ok to be ok and how to get ok with being ok. Ok?
So how are you doing today? What do you think the most common answer is to that question? I think it's probably something like I'm fine or I'm ok. When someone responds with either of those answers, what do you start thinking? Do you start wondering what is really going on that is not good? Do you just nod and move on because you don't want to know how they are really doing?

Summary
Over the last several weeks I've laid out my version of a leadership development program. We started out with foundational elements and went clear through to the point where anyone going through this program would have a solid plan to work on for…well, however long it takes.
One of the things that I did not address is just how dynamic these development plans need to be. If you were working with me on your plan, we would just get through all of those elements, build it into a plan and then assume you could just follow that to the letter and everything would be just fine. I have never seen that happen.
Sure you might be good for a few days or even weeks, but the one thing that I can guarantee is that eventually you will need to adjust that plan. While there will likely be many things that go well, there will also likely be things we didn't anticipate and unfortunately probably some things that just won't go well. That's all to be expected.
So what do we do in those cases? We course correct. That's what I'd like to talk about today. I'll share some stories about course corrections I have had to do in my life, course corrections I should have done and talk about this concept in more depth.

Summary
In this week's special episode I want to go back and start at the beginning. What I'm attempting to do is to take the first 10 episodes plus the launch and other bonus episodes and pull in the best bits and try and weave them into some sort of a coherent story.
There are a couple of reasons I'm trying to do this. First, I wanted to see for myself if there is actually something coherent here. Meaning that I'm not just randomly throwing topics in some random order that you can't build on. I'm hoping as this episode goes on that if you are a leader (professional or otherwise) and were looking for personal development or to help with the development of others you will see that you can use the concepts from the first three months of the podcast to get off to an amazing start.

- Dialing it Back 42:44
- Wrap Up (what you can get from working with me) 45:58
Key Takeaways
- The skills, techniques and theories I have shared through episode 10 can all be put together and help you put together your own leadership development plan.
- If this is something you want to work through and would like someone to bounce ideas off, templates to use and someone to help hold you to your commitments, email contact@mtneboconsulting.com or use the contact for on my website and we can start working together on improving your leadership journey.

Summary
In a survey response, I had someone suggest that I cover imposter syndrome. I had already been thinking about that as a part of what I'd like to discuss today and that's stories that we make up in our minds and/or tell ourselves. Imposter syndrome definitely is a story we tell ourselves so I'll have a section on that but I want today's episode to be just a bit more broad.
For story time, I'll share a story about the first professional conference I was asked to speak at.
For today's little lift recommendation, I have another book that is a great example of telling ourselves stories about others. Then I'll dive in and talk about the types of stories we tell ourselves including imposter syndrome. I'll end with a few idea on how we can change the narrative, but more so than me giving you a bunch of "how to's" today, my real goal is to get you thinking about the stories you have or are telling yourself and how they impact your life. That's the first step in changing the narrative.
Approximate Time Stamps
- Story Time 01:51
- Little Lift Recommendation 04:16
- What Kinds of Stories We Tell Ourselves 04:44
- Imposter Syndrome 14:25
- Other Stories 30:00
- Wrap Up 39:24
Key Takeaways
- We are almost always telling ourselves stories about ourselves, others and situations
- Most stories have some fact but a lot of fictional fill in the blanks
- Stories have a tremendous impact on our lives
- Imposter syndrome is one of the most impactful stories
- We need to be deliberate in how we view our stories, rose colored, sun or prescription glasses
- Recognize, analyze, categorize and change the narrative

Summary
So many of us tend to go at full throttle all of the time. It doesn't seem to matter if it's in our personal or professional lives. In fact, if you do it in one area, odds are you will do it in all areas. If that's the case, your weekends, which many use to take a break from work, are just as busy and stressful as the weekdays, maybe even more so. This week I had a good friend ask me if I had any plans to relax or tune out this week. I don't but I should. I want to spend today talking about dialing it back on occasion and taking care of ourselves when needed.
I'll start off with a quick story about last Thanksgiving and then for this weeks Little Lift, I'll try and provide some resources that I have read or written recently. And then before I dive into the main topic, I want to review one of the personality style elements that is important to remember as you think about your own self care.

This is the 3rd episode in my relationship focused series. We've talked about the foundations of relationship building and last week we talked in depth about trust. IF you haven't already listened to those episodes, now is a good time. Once you have established trust, then you can continue to work on those key relationships. Doing so can yield tremendous results, especially when compared with the alternative of just hoping things work out. Today I want to about how relationships relate to potential and getting the most out of life. I'll start with a couple of stories about one of my absolute heroes. Then a book recommendation that’s about helping others do and be more. Then we will dive in and discuss relationships and potential. I hope you'll stick with me through the end.

Leadership today - it would be great to see more public examples of amazing leadership. Unfortunately, there is so much negativity in the news today and this seems to apply to leadership as well. In this episode we explore the state of leadership today - and while it's not quite as bad as the news would have it be, it is not where it could be. We will discuss motives that seem to exist today, how we got here and the impact of today's leadership.
Approximate Time Stamps
- Todays Reasons to Lead: 2:00
- How We Got Here: 12:48
- Impact of Today's Leadership: 30:42
Key Take Aways
- Some of todays reasons to lead are prioritized over more important reasons to want to lead. Fame, money, power, etc. are all reasons that people seem to want to lead today. Are those the most important items?
- There are two categories of reasons we got to where we are today. Some items are circumstantial and others are deliberate decisions that are going to ocntinue causing issues.
- Today's leadership challenges impact the leader, those they lead and the organization.
