Tammy Coxen explores the history of hundreds of tiny vintage liquor bottles that she inherited from her grandmother.
Hiram Walker was a Massachusetts-born American who only spent four years actually living in Canada. But despite all that, he would go on to be one of Canada's most influential distillers, and his legacy lives on still today. In this episode Tammy explores how Walker's "Club" Whiskey became Canadian, and why it makes her think of her childhood.

It's one of those love it or hate it products, with plenty of positive reviews on the Internet, including people absolutely bereft when it was discontinued in 2008. We talked about the rich history of Cognac, including how it's made and enjoyed, and what's happening in modern Cognac trends. Then we dove into tasting and comparing two tiny bottles - my grandma's bottle of 1970s Hennessy Cognac and a modern bottle. While they were both delicious, the older bottle had some really interesting aromas and flavors and a fascinating finish.

Monnet Cognac is a fine old brand, with roots going back to 1838. In this episode I dive into why it's been called a "sunny" style of Cognac, and what it means that it's labeled a 4 star Cognac. While the youngest of the Big Four houses, Courvoisier Cognac has definitely made its mark. Like Bottle #19: Hennessy, it is particularly well loved by the African American community and was commemorated by rap group Busta Rhymes in the 2001 hit “Pass the Courvoisier.” But long before that association, Courvoisier was capitalizing on another famous personality: Napoleon Bonaparte. This required an impressive bit of marketing, given that Napoleon died in 1821: 17 years before the House of Courvoisier was officially founded in 1838. Grandma's collection of miniature liquor bottles has gifted me with three different coffee liqueurs so far - a 1960s or 70s Tia Maria, 1980s Cafe Noir from McGuinness, and 1990s Coloma coffee liqueur. In this episode I open them all with Bea Bradsell. Bea is director of The Drink Cabinet and daughter of Dick Bradsell, the man who invented the espresso martini, and a really important figure in the history of UK mixology. Rémy Martin is one of the “Big Four” Cognac houses that dominate production. One of the most obvious things that distinguishes it from the other Cognacs I’ve discovered in Grandma’s collection is that the company that makes it was actually founded by Frenchmen! Bottle #62 is Roncoco, a coconut liqueur based on white rum, bottled in Lake Alfred, Florida, under the authority of Ron Matusalem of San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a rum fan, I was already aware of the Ron Matusalem name, although these days it is made and based in the Dominican Republic rather than Puerto Rico. As I started digging into its history I didn’t find much about Roncoco, but I did find a LOT of drama, which I dig into in this episode.

An ad from 1985 claims that nine different apple varieties were used to make Apple Barrel Schnapps. Personally, I have a hard time believing that ANY apples were harmed in the making of this product. So far, I’ve revealed and researched 10 vintage tiny bottles but have yet to taste any. Until now. In my first-ever tasting episode, I sat down with Casey Miller, my favorite bartender at my favorite bar, The Last Word, to compare my tiny bottle of vintage Disaronno with its modern counterpart.
