Have you heard of cervical cancer? What about Human Papillomavirus (HPV)? HPV is a common sexually transmitted virus that can cause cancer below the belt. Tamika Felder learned in 2005 that she had cervical cancer and had to have her uterus and cervix removed because of it. She found herself supported by friends, family, and coworkers but lacked community with other women with cervical cancer who could understand what she had gone through. So, she decided to become the support and created Cervivor, a community to fill the gap. Every day in the United States, Black families are investigated by the Child Welfare System and forcibly separated at rates much higher than their white counterparts. This system, known to most as Child Protective Services (CPS) and to some activists as the Family Regulation System, has been around in some form for over 100 years. Research into women’s health is historically underfunded and not treated as a priority. Women and gender-diverse people are more likely to be dismissed as overly emotional, dramatic, or untrustworthy in medical settings. This can lead to misdiagnosis, delays in care and a lot of dismissal or mistreatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized workplace burnout as an “occupational phenomenon.” Although it is not classified as a medical condition, individuals can experience severe physical, mental, and emotional issues which arise from chronic workplace stress.
We are now seeing a wave of health coaches being brought into corporations as part of larger treatment teams to help employees achieve their health goals while keeping burnout at bay. We met with Amy Papandrea, a certified health and wellness coach and founder of Stone Lotus Health Coaching, who aims to help professionals prevent and recover from occupational burnout so that they can reclaim their health, careers, and personal lives.
In this episode of the Your Health Unlocked Podcast, Amy discusses trends in the health coaching industry and how burnout is impacting our health as a society. She also arms us with a practical set of tools to relieve stress and create a better sense of wellbeing at work. Finally, Amy explains how leadership can learn to recognize the signs of burnout among employees and emphasizes the importance integrating wellness into workplace culture.

A lot has changed in the world of women’s health since 1975, the year we were founded. In this live recording of our very first podcast episode, we spoke with Byllye Avery, Cynthia Gutierrez, and Rachel Branaman, three giants in the policy and programming space. Together, we discussed the history, present, and future of the women’s health movement in the U.S., and how we can better fight for health care access and equity for all.
