Lupins are popping up all over my allotment and flowering in their first year! When I first started growing lupins I was too frustrated to wait a year for blooms.. but I tried (although the lupin seedlings in the story I read were eaten by bunnies) and now my favourite flowers are reminding me of my passion to stay grounded.
To make sense of trying to fly less, I wrote a few pieces last year about my relationship to flying, and in this episode I read one of those published short stories 'Staying Grounded' as well as my reflections on the challenge I posed myself: When someone mentions having time off, instead of asking, “what exciting places are you going to on your holiday, I’ll ask: ‘What are you cultivating at your feet?’”

It's a short and sweet message this week about solidarity and remembering how united the environmental movement is with other initiatives. I also recommend a quick little read about exactly this topic - Feminism for the 99% a manifesto.
I'm seeing a lot of my friends are feeling very aware of the climate crisis. I have friends in North America, whose homes smell like campfires. And it's hard to ignore the climate crisis when that's right on your doorstep.
So the book review this week is a little escapism that also packs a powerful message: Robin Hobb's trilogy Soldier Son. This taught me more about body shaming and what it's like being overweight than any other book I've ever read and it's in an entertaining and engaging fantasy package.
Welcome to a special episode this week as I let you in on a little summer challenge!
The Climate Joy Challenge is an opportunity to rewire your brain and the emotions you feel when you think about climate change and climate activism.
Tune in this week as I share with you how to carry out the Climate Joy Challenge and why this will help you find more purpose, satisfaction and comfort in advocating for climate interventions or making changes in your own life. It's easier and simpler than you might think!
And if you join in this summer you can find others who are also concerned about climate change and wanting to take action from a place of abundance. If you want to take it deeper, send me a message and I'll add you to a private group to reflect further!

This episode confronts and befriends some typical climate gremlins. Those inner critic voices that stop you from taking action and being as involved as you'd like!
Is it a fast-talking bully voice that tells you the wicked challenges of climate change are too big, and you're too small?
Is it the intellectual gatekeeper that asks, 'who are you to recommend solutions?' you need a PhD in this. Or perhaps it's another flavour of intellectual authority that says you don't have the right metrics to measure impact.
Is it a joy crusher that points out your privelege in talking about #climatejoy instead of being motivated by catastrophe, droughts, fires, and suffering.
If you relate to any of these, please give the episode a listen as we confront these gremlins - in community - and get a sneak peak into some of the conversations about climate activism at my recent garden party!

I'm open to anything, we can use the same techniques - to self regulate, clarify what you want, and process your emotions - when it comes to relationships with your parents, boss, employees, or partner! For those outside the Ivory Tower, you may be surprised that Imposter Syndrome is also rampant within the Academy. It breaks my heart when I hear hard-working, brilliant colleagues and friends that are still (even after years and years of experience) feeling like they're 'not enough' and that they don't belong in academia.
In this episode I walk through some of the common reasons I see my clients identify with Imposter Syndrome and then a few ways to turn those thoughts around. If you've suffered from what I call the PhD Hangover - because three years of being critiqued and questioned is understandably going to leave you feeling doubtful of your abilities - then please please listen to this episode. I hope it helps!
Since I decided that I was worthy, however I wanted to show up as an academic, I've not had a relapse into Imposter Syndrome and I wish the same for you!

This week I received an email saying "I've just read your Imperfect Vegan piece and I absolutely loved it. I'd meant to have a quick look then get on with some work and read it later, but all the gorgeous sensory description just drew me right through it until I found I'd read the whole thing!"
Not only did this warm me up like my breakfast cuppa, it made me pause what I was doing and dust off my first short story published in Literary Veganism. I read it out loud to myself and enjoyed reconnecting with the me that wrote it, because it's not me anymore.. we keep evolving and when you put a piece out in to the world it becomes it's own thing separate from you.
I thought I'd share it with you on this podcast, so settle down for a special episode: story time! My long flirtation with veganism.

This book The Artist's Way: A course in Discovering and Recovering your Creative Self by Julia Cameron is probably up there as my favourite book of all time (in the self-help genre, it's too difficult to actually choose one favourite... there are too many magical books out there).
Essentially, it's a 12 week course that helps you lean into your own creativity. It's a masterclass in self-care and letting go of self-censorship too.
If you can stick with it - it's was a 7-10 hour weekly commitment for me, although she has adapted ones for parents and other groups that may have other considerations about how they could take part - it's a transformative opportunity to let more play and fun and joy into your life.
This epsiode is about chronic pain and pain management.
I recently hired a chronic pain specialist and 1:1 coach, and although I didn't think I was going to have much to report on after only a few days - it turns out I do! I've had a leg injury for 8 years that has never totally healed and for the first time in a long long time, if not since before the accident I've been having moments of shock that the pain is gone.
I hope this technique, that Anna calls 'the Pain Buster' works for you too if you're suffering from chronic pain!

What did you do for Earth Day this year? Did it leave you lighter, buzzing, ready to take on the world?
No? Me neither. I thought being surrounded by others that are worried about the climate crisis and wanting to see changes would be energising, but this time it wasn't. This isn't an uplifting episode... it's hard to feel like 'enough' is ever happening. Short of governments starting to enact 'radical' degrowth policies, I'm not sure what would be.
If you were also disappointed that tens of thousands attended a march in London and it hardly made headlines, I feel you.
I was speaking to one of my clients recently who told me they wondered, 'how do you do it all.'
I think they meant it as a compliment, but it did worry me a little that I give off a sense of working all the time and wanted to offer this little reminder that a lot of what people 'see' in terms of me having a podcast, a newsletter, coaching clients and writing outputs from my research, I have intentionally spent years at finding ways to do them that energise me.
If you too are watching other people putting their stuff out in the world, and feel a pang of exhaustion trying to imagine yourself in the same position, this episode might be just what you need.
Here's your permission slip to have more fun, create more gaps in your calendar, and do something nice for yourself!

Another one of my favourite productivity books, Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Busy Moms by Kate Northup.
It's for more than moms and its a book I keep coming back to over and over because of Kate's step by step practical guide as well as the mindset shift.
The book offers some big steps to learning to ask for help, prioritise yourself and communicate better about your needs and supporting others.
🥚 wisdom is also a fav concepts: letting things come to you, rather than chasing after that sperm 😅If you want a little sunshine of inspiration and actionable tips to improve your climate change work every single week, sign up to my email list. If you ever find yourself repeating that 'it's too difficult' one of the best antidotes I've found is asking 'is that true?' and 'is that thought serving me?'
Telling ourselves that something is impossible or too challenging, may feel true, but you may be letting it get in the way of doing something that you really do want to believe is possible for you!
When you notice yourself repeating 'it's too difficult' or 'I don't think I can do that,' check in and ask yourself, 'is that true?' Just stop and wonder if there is a possibility that you can do that. Or that someone else might find that easy. Get curious about how that might not be true.

I highly recommend Four Thousand Weeks: Time management for mortals by Oliver Burkeman.
This my favourite book on productivity. It helped me let go of the age old existential crisis question of ‘what is the meaning of life.’
This quote in particular captures some of the essence of that, stop worrying so much about having an impact and what you should do and ask yourself what you really enjoy doing:
“Perhaps your particular contribution to a world facing multiple crises isn’t primarily to spend your time pursuing activism, or seeking electoral office, but on caring for an elderly relative, or making music, or working as a pastry check, like my brother-in-law, a strapping South African you might mistake for a rugby player but whose work involves concocting intricate structures of spun sugar and butter icing that detonate small explosions of joy in their recipients. The Buddhist teacher Susan Piver points out that it can be surprisingly radical and discomfiting, for many of us, to ask how we’d enjoy spending our time.”
How would you enjoy spending your time? The answer to that question might be a good one for how you might use your time best.
In time you might find it aligns beautifully with your concerns about climate change.

Welcome to a special episode this week as I let you in on some of my 'climate triggers' - the things I see that can send me into rage and despair about the climate emergency- and then a way to process these emotions - by mapping across sub-modalities in your brain, it's really fun - to reframe these feelings and thoughts into more useful action.
Whether it's peat hags or rising sea levels or people not recycling, I'd love to hear what your climate triggers are and how you've reframed moments of fear and frustration into positive actions in your community.
If you want to know more about peatlands and peat degradation in the UK. Also look up these crazy images of Holme Fen - a peatland in the UK that lost 4,000 years of peat (because it takes a 1,000 years to develop 1 meter) in 173 years!

I used to not 'get' affirmations, I thought they were a bit bullshit until week 1 of the Artist's Way. In this episode, I share tips and tricks on how to use affirmations effectively.
If you don't catch the gremlins they can bring up or gaslight yourself into overly ambitious statements, sure they're bullshit.
But if used with care, affirmations can be a powerful, shorthand to get you in a resource state.

This week I take inspiration from two of my current mentors to talk about relationships.
Simone Grace Seol - "Repeat after me. 'I accept NOTHING LESS than the company of people who do not merely tolerate me, accept me, or like me with some conditions and provisions attached, but ADORE my face, and DELIGHT in all my weird quirks, eccentricities and contradictions, and TREASURE the very strange things that make ME.'"
John Overdurf - "The way you see any individual in your mind is the best they can ever be in your presence"
From Simone Seol to Marie Kondo, I get around in this episode, offering a nudge to let go of any relationships that aren't filling you up and some strategies to lean into those that are - and how to tell the difference :)

I had a little realisation that the most important piece to getting you to take action, to make decisions from a 'good place' is to learn how to get yourself into a Resource state.
By that I mean, be able to self-regulate your nervous system so you're not in fight, flight or fawn mode. Be able to get yourself feeling calm, safe and confident even. That's the Resource state and that's where we want to make decisions from. Not from a place of lack and fear.
So coaching and a lot of my self-coaching is about how to shift from that scared, fearful, or annoyed place to the Resource state.
Listen on to find out some of my favourite tips past and present.

I'm doing it.. I'm finally talking about the importance of taking action from a place of abundance instead of lack. I know those are overdone words but bear with me as I give multiple examples of how people pleasing comes from a place of not enoughness and instead offer some ways to reframe, sometimes the same action, out of accepting yourself and trusting people will like you when you show up in a genuine and confident way.

In this episode I talk about the difference between rationalising an idea or way of being to actually feeling that in your body. This is one of the biggest benefits of coaching in my opinion: being able to process your emotions through your body so you're not trying to convince yourself to do things just through your head.

This is going to be an episode about giving you permission, and even a bit of encouragement, to be the villain.
I started a new job this month and at times I've felt overwhelmed by all the opportunities and activities I can be involved in. I learned from my first coach the value of asking yourself, 'If I say yes to this, what am I saying no to?' because work presents many invitations, it doesn't mean that you have to (or can) do them all.
But my current coach helped me push this critique of people pleasing a bit further, to get comfortable with 'being the villian' of disappointing others in order to stay committed to my own vision for the projects, plans and work routine I know will get me the best results.
Like most new uncomfortable patterns, it will feel safer in your body each time you 'be the villain' and see the catastrophes your brain offered don't arise. And if not.. here's my chocolate brownie recipe that helped me this week :D
Veganised Sand Art Brownies
(look em up if you want to give them away as a gift like I did when I was little)
1 cup + 2tbsp flour
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup chocolate chips
3 flax eggs (3 tbsp flax + 3/4 cup water)
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup walnuts highly recommended
Heat oven to 350C/178F, butter a 9x9inch baking tray.
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. It makes a deliciously wet batter.
Tip batter into baking tray and bake for 20-25 minutes, you'll know it's ready when there is a sort of firm crust on top that doesn't jiggle. Although, I often aim to undercook them cuz I like em super gooey. Just describing them makes me want to go whip up another batch.

On this episode, I cover a favourite new 'thought' I've been practicing. Instead of worrying if I made the 'right' decision and beating myself up for all the ways the other option would have worked out better, I welcome the idea that both options would be 'right,' both lead to 'joy.' What have you got to loose by trusting this idea? I hope it opens some new thought patterns for you too!

Have you found yourself unable to celebrate an accomplishment because it came to you too easily?
If so, you're definitely not alone and it's a sneaky thought connected to a common idea in our society that success requires suffering, 'no pain, no gain.' In this episode I want to crack open the door and invite you to reflect on whether letting go of the idea that you 'need to work hard to succeed' might not serve. Just consider it.
Work can feel fun and easy. You can be more productive with less 'nose to the grindstone' proving yourself.

David R. Hawkins - Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender
This is one of my favourite coaching concepts, known in shorthand as 'who before how.' It's simple to grasp and often slow to put into practice. Once you get it, it's like a hot air balloon that let's you see the terrain and float over obstacles that when you're on the ground are daunting.
Who before how, means identifying who you want to be in future, say three years time - fixing your focus on your VISION and your WHY - and not getting bogged down in the details of 'how' you could possibly get there.
When you start making decisions from a place of calm and confidence because you have faith you will become the person you want in the future, all those pesky questions aren't so paralysing or painful.

I used to say 'I don't know' a lot. And I've started to ban that statement from my vocabulary because it often stops me from moving forward and trusting myself.
In this episode, I talk about how to let go of all the energy and time wrapped up in indecision and the value of getting started, trusting yourself, trusting there is not one right path, and cultivating a mindset of experimentation and learning.

We don't need external validation. It's obvious when I think of what I'm confident about, what I'm sure of. Like how bloody brilliant women are, and to not feel diminished by a misogynistic comment. Yet when I'm less sure, I preen at others' approval. Or ruminate on what I perceive to be a slight.
In this episode, I talk about one of the most important thought patterns that gets us into a state of self-validation. I seem to have to learn this one over and over: that I can decide that people want to hear my opinion, that I am valued and valuable in any context.
Where are you looking for others' reassurance? If you look inward instead, I bet you'll find more evidence that you are valued and your opinion of yourself is what's most important.

Failing is so good for us.
It can feel terrible TO BE a failure.
But it's possible to find so much fun in the act of failing.
If you aren't willing to show up as a newbie, to embrace being really really terrible, then how are you going to learn?
In this episode, I want to talk about how to reframe failure as a good thing and as an opportunity for growth. Fast failure = fast learning.

As an academic I know I always have to start by defining my terms, this is not an academic podcast so I'm not going to do exactly that, but I do use this episode to explain I understand coaching.
Coaching is about feeling seen and someone holding space for you, putting your interests and goals at the centre of the discussion.
Coaching is about learning to listen to your body, to feel your emotions and know what it's telling you.
Coaching is about figuring out what you want, being asked over and over what YOU WANT. It feels so good to be supported in that way - to give yourself permission to be cared for and to dream.
Coaching is about revealing your subconscious thoughts and then taking action from a place of intentional thoughts.

I didn't realise I was addicted to worrying until a couple months ago when I read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.
Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you. I can think of so many times worrying has felt beyond my control to stop and that it caused harm in my own life: panic, anxiety, sleepless nights, I could go on. But what if, like any addiction, it's something you could repattern your brain out of?! What if worrying is a choice?
In this episode, I share some of the best tricks I've learned to get out this thought pattern.

Do you worry about the environmental impact of flying like I do?
To fly or not to fly? I'm not asking it to try to shame anyone, I really want to know, why do you fly?
I've spent much of the past 2 years working on taking action from a place of joy and abundance, and I can see the possibility for that in flying less (or not at all). For example, I usually flew during the summers of 2008 to 2020 from the UK to see family in the US and I now love not flying because it means I get to tend my garden (and look after my pea babies, who I adore). But the thought of never flying to see family, or potentially flying only every three years as advised in by some environmental initiatives, feels more restrictive than joyful.
In this episode, I share my recent musing on "the most climate-destructive individual activity" as Greta aptly calls it, in her edited collection The Climate Book.
I'd love to hear about your own thoughts on flying, if you want to share email me at ellsworthkrebs@gmail.com

Are you in a whirlwind of feeling like you're not doing enough?
Do you take the time to actually define what enough would be on a weekly basis?
For me, that's the starting point. With weekly planning and reflection, YOU decide what is realistic and joyful as goals.
In this episode, I talk through my planning process so that I'm not stuck with that terrible mindset of 'spinning plates' and the anxiety that comes with worrying one will crash and break.

Where are you letting fear hold you back from getting what you want?
Whether it's having a conversation to tell your manager 'no' to doing a new project because you want to do the current project to its full potential OR telling a parent about the romantic relationship you suspect they don't approve of, we often accept fear as a sign we're on the wrong path.
But what if fear is a sign that you are breaking free of comfortable patterns that keep you stuck, getting the same results over and over?
Fear is a sign of trying something new, so you can grow and transform into the future version of yourself you aspire to.
On this episode, I share one of my fears about this podcast and why we can face things that are scary and do them anyway.

Have you also cringed when someone tried to persuade you to do what they wanted because "It will look good on your CV?"
In my experience, the best things I've done - that then got me the next job or grant or speaking gig or publication (so essentially it does turn out worth it from a 'CV perspective') - was when I was following what felt most fun, what I truly wanted to do anyway.
But you might say "but I don't know what would be fun!" or "I wish I knew what I did want, why can't someone just tell me?"
In this episode, I'll teach you how to find that joy and motivation for yourself.

I'm kicking off my podcast by giving myself, and you, the permission to show up imperfectly.
Perfectionism, and the guilt and anxiety co-morbid with this thought pattern, is something I’ve been intentionally rooting out of my life like a gardener after dandelions. Perfectionism stops me from trying, and failing, and that’s how we learn and grow.
I’ve accepted, even celebrated imperfectionism, in my writing, my home decor, my diet and I’ll embrace it here too. Because I have so much I want to share about what I know from being a Life Coach, Social Climate Scientist and Author.
It can't wait. I'm ready to share how I learned to love my imperfections and befriend my gremlin, inner-critic voices.

Thanks for tuning into the first episode of Joyful Climate Writing!
This is a podcast series about using the power of self-love to take action and share stories on living within planetary boundaries.
My names is Dr Katherine Ellsworth-Krebs. I’m a social climate scientists and life coach! I’m excited to be able to share my personal journey and learning from a decade research sustainable living and three years of coaching.
This podcast is for you if you want to know what social climate scientists are saying about what we need to do in relation to the wicked environmental and social issues we're facing. This isn't just about us as individual recycling. No, this is the big stuff. This is about the radical, societal transformations us focusing on what social scientists have agreed on for years.
This podcast is also for you if you want to take more climate action and find how you are best suited to be a magical agent of social change. That means, of course, starting by filling yourself up. Because if you're not full and overflowing with energy, then you can't make the changes that you want to see in the world. It has to start with you.
Finally, this podcast is for anyone who wants to WRITE and tell stories of change. I love writing and want to share the tools that made me believe writing, even academic writing, is FUN and EASY. I want to share how you can show up fearlessly and start sharing your stories. Because we need more stories about climate action. We need to be talking about how to live joyfully within planetary boundaries.
