Staying authentic and purposeful when working with knuckleheads and challenging personalities is hard. It’s even harder when your other challenges are … well, challenging. Those two ingredients—working with challenging people AND having your own challenges can bring out our not-best selves—not to mention drain our inner battery.

So, let’s talk to Sara James Shelton, a global talent leader and coach. Sara and I talk about overcoming our bad habits, introspection, and staying positive when times are tough. Sara may be the voice you may need in your ears right now.

The busier you are, the more you need quiet time. That's the headline of an HBR article that went viral. Because it's true.

Research shows that just by being in silence, the brain regenerates. Your brain literally gets better when you give it quiet time.

I interviewed the co-authors of the article and the amazing book they wrote about why silence may hold the keys to what we're looking for as leaders:

→ Deeper Communication: Silence can be more powerful than words in building connections and bonds

→ Strategic Thinking: Silence can help you "see the bigger picture"

→ Discernment: Make wiser decisions

Silence also has been proven to help:

→ Reduce stress

→ Increase clarity

→ Experience better health

Mental well-being is something we all struggle with from time to time. But it’s still taboo to talk about mental health, especially at work.

Until we feel safe communicating what we’re experiencing, we’re likely to suffer in silence.

That’s why I’m delighted to discuss mental health with Ahava Leebtag.

Ahava is the founder and president of Aha Media, a healthcare content marketing agency. Ahava is what you might call a rockstar. In fact, in 2020, she was inducted into the Healthcare Internet Hall of Fame.

But today’s discussion with Ahava is not about content marketing.

It’s about mental health.

The importance of discussing mental health.

Openly.

Without fear or shame.

Ahava doesn’t mince words or hold back, as you'll soon hear. And that’s why this episode is so special. It’s candid. It’s real. And it can be the doorway to healing—for you or someone you know.

Because until we master the ability to say no to people and things that don’t serve us or don’t serve our mission and purpose, we’ll continue to be swept away by a barrage of To Dos and commitments that block us from being our best and experiencing the best.

Think about your life now. How many things are you doing on any given day that you would rather say no to?

Now: think about how much more time, headspace, and energy you’d have if you could just … say … no.

That’s why I’m delighted to share this discussion with you on how to say no easily and often with Mary Foley.

ABOUT MARY FOLEY

Mary Foley revs up female entrepreneurs with the clarity, confidence, consistency, and community to generate the revenue they really want.

Mary started revving up her own career when she bodaciously ditched her engineering degree for a job as an $ 8-an-hour customer service rep at AOL—back when AOL was cool.

Today, when she’s not wearing her red cape as a business coach, workshop facilitator, or host of the Live Like Your Nail Color podcast, she’s usually on her bike tapping into her inner teenager on the trails and byways of Virginia.

Dr. Michael Gervais says that we can only train for three things:

  1. We can train for skills
  2. We can train our bodies (like lifting weights)
  3. We can train our minds

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t learn how to train my mind in school. I didn’t even know such a skill was possible until I was deep in crisis in my 30s.

But I got lucky. I discovered the podcast, The One You Feed. I learned about meditation, mindfulness, and cultivating stillness despite radically tough moments. More importantly, I learned that these practices could be applied simply and work—if I put in the work.

I’ve invited the show’s host and behavior coach, Eric Zimmer, to share ways to meet tough moments with a calm mind: a mind that can invite strength, peace, and renewal.

There’s a stodgy form of leadership we’ve all seen play out: the hard-charging executive focused on nothing but results and leaves carnage in their wake. That way of being is “hardwired” into our business culture.

But another form of leadership invites us to be “heart-wired”: leading with heart, purpose, and a deep connection for our missions and the people we work with and serve.

That “heart-wired” way of leadership resonates with me; if it resonates with you, this is your episode.

I speak with Chrisie Scott, an executive leader for a renowned healthcare system, about being a heart-wired leader. Chrisie coined the term, and having worked with her, I can vouch that Chrisie walks the walk on being a heart-wired leader.

Listen as we transcend the old models of leadership that preached grinding it out, and focused on the bottom line only, no matter the cost to yourself and others. Modern leadership is heart-centered, rooted in purpose and meaning, and leaves a legacy.

Heart-centered leaders give, give, give. Which is awesome. Until you find yourself burned out, threadbare, and running on fumes.

What’s the antidote? More self-care practices? Maybe. But the CEO of Mom Complex and author of “Slay Like a Mother,” Katherine Wintsch, tells us we must add soul care to our life routines.

Are you feeling the burnout? Is the yoga, meditation, and green smoothie routine not cutting it anymore? Then join us as we learn about the art of soul care so we can keep thriving and flourishing.

There’s a sales “guru” I stalk on IG. His posts are full of photos of him boarding private jets, wearing bling, and kissing models. What he sells is a get-rich-quick scheme. I know it, and if you saw his posts, you’d know it too.

And yet the dude has an epic following.

Why’s that? He’s great at selling. Like really great. I don’t believe a word coming out of his mouth, yet I can’t help but watch his video pitches. I’m captivated. But thankfully, I’m not so captivated that I give him my money. The same can’t be said for the unlucky ones who do business with him.

It’s guys like him that give persuasion a bad name. In this episode, I want to introduce you to a behavioral scientist who will teach us to persuade without feeling slimy or sleazy.

Let’s be clear. You’re trying to persuade people every day in business. To buy your ideas. To give you the green light for a special project. To help you advance your cause or career.

Especially in presentations.

Don’t let the slimeballs have a monopoly on persuasion. Listen in and listen up as we learn to persuade in presentations—without the slime or the sleaze.

Feeling burned out sucks.

(I know. I’ve done two tours of burnout since the pandemic.)

Low energy. Low drive.

And (for me, at least), everything feels overwhelming.

That’s no way to be.

Hopefully, you’re not living in Burnout City. If you are, this is the episode for you.

And if you’re NOT feeling burned out, awesome: but still listen to this episode.

We live in a culture that values doing over being.

We’re so busy with what’s in front of us that we neglect what’s happening inside of us.

You have to be vigilant to keep your energy tip-top.

I invited my favorite doctor to talk about burnout.

You’ll love Dr. Amy Coleman.

She radiates joy for helping people to heal.

Dr. Amy is also quite accomplished.

She has helped heal many people as a:

  • U.S. Air Force surgeon
  • Iraq war veteran
  • Primary physician for the USAF Special Forces units
  • Chief medical physician for NASA Space Shuttle support missions

And if THAT wasn’t enough, Dr. Amy also received her fellowship from the Institute of Function Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and has secondary training in Japanese acupuncture.

If you want to be better at leading people, meetings, and conversations, ignore the business advice about saying the right thing. (There are no magic words.) Instead, focus on being a better guide: how to direct a connected conversation and what to do when a conversation or meeting gets derailed.

Being a better conversation guide doesn’t require you to be the leader or owner of the agenda of the meeting. Being a better conversation guide means spotting the red basketball in the room and keeping it moving around the court.

Join me, Stephen Moegling, as we go down the rabbit hole of human communication: so you have the best chance at having Connected Conversations in business.

Connected Conversations are conversations when you’re connected with your audience: they’re not distracted, disgruntled, or disengaged, and neither are you. And when you and your audience are connected, the sky’s the limit.

Connected Conversations are what we need more of in business today. Less friction. Less gridlock. Less fear that you won’t be heard or respected.

If you’re a leader, Connected Conversations are what your team asks of you. And if you’re on the path to leadership (which we all are), learning the ancient art and science of connecting with people is perhaps your greatest asset for having the life you want.

A great business conversation can change your destiny—or at the very least, can make your day.

Yet most of us sit through meetings that suck the life out of us. We meet with people who are gifted at pressing our buttons and causing us to feel bad and act in ways we regret. And there are some conversations we need to have or get better at having, but we don’t because we think it’s impossible or we’re not capable enough.

Most business advice on having better conversations focuses on what to say. But that’s a mistake. Scientists agree that 90 to 95% of communication is NON-VERBAL.

There are invisible human dynamics at work in every conversation that influences the outcome and has nothing to do with what is being said.

I want to teach you what’s really happening in every conversation and meeting so you:

  • Represent yourself best
  • Broach tender topics with confidence
  • Deal with difficult people in ways that are kind yet firm

How to stop imposter syndrome in its tracks.

Imposter Syndrome. We have all felt it. That sense we’re a fraud, and somebody soon enough will realize we are a fraud and call us out. We doubt our skills. We doubt ourselves. How on earth will we ever succeed and feel successful when cloaked in imposter syndrome?

My guest is here to say we’re all wrong about imposter syndrome. Starting with the name itself. Let’s get to the bottom of imposter syndrome. So we can get on to the business of being.

Don’t fear fear.

I love and hate this line by Jack Canfield: “Most everything you want is just outside of your comfort zone.” I love the line because it’s true. I hate the line … because it’s true. Stepping outside of your comfort zone means stepping into fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of ridicule. Fear of failure. (And even fear of success.)

In this episode, I talk to my friend and entrepreneur Brian Muka about how to build a better relationship with fear. If we want to enrich and grow our lives, we need to get more comfortable with our fears and learn new skills to de-escalate the fear response. Brian is known as the “Fear Sherpa.” Join us as we discuss how to make friends with our fears.

Business 101: failure is guaranteed when you aim at a worthy target. At some point, things don’t go according to plan. Falling is inevitable. And that fall can leave us bruised and shake our confidence and faith that better days are coming. So how do we rise again and keep going? And not just come back—but come back better than before.

In this episode, I discuss how to rise again with Jeannette. She’s one of the strongest people I know. (And the funniest.) Jeannette has had her share of setbacks in her business life. Yet she has the ability to turn sorrow into strength and misfortune into fortune. Join us as we discuss how to rise again and come back even better.

About Jannett Erving

Growing up in rural Mississippi, Jannett witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of obesity and the lack of healthy food options for minorities and at-risk families. After losing her mother at just 46 years old to hypertension and other disease comorbidities, Jeannette told herself, Enough is enough. This doesn’t have to be my life story. Jeannette founded the non-profit Faces of HOPE and its partner organization, HOPE for Obesity, to help kids and families end childhood obesity.

Jannett is also a Realtor, and her purpose is to help her clients “come out on top”: whether that means getting the best price, getting the best offer, or crossing the threshold of your new home as a proud and happy owner.

What is that saying about best-laid plans? In business, things fail: projects go sideways, investments nosedive into the red, relationships dissolve, and we’re often left holding the bag, wondering, What the hell do I do now?

In this episode, I speak with my friend and design futurist, Zane Gibbs. Zane holds a Ph.D. in Quantum Field Theory, and his innovation firm helps clients to reimagine products, grow brands, and maximize human performance. Zane and his partner also run F*ckup Nights RVA, part of a global movement to share stories of professional failure.

Join us as we discuss failure in our business lives so you can emerge whole, complete, and ready for what’s next.

About Zane Gibbs

Zane’s life experiences have profoundly impacted his life. From growing up in a single-parent household in the projects to failing high-school geometry, to completing a Ph.D. with a specialty in Quantum Field Theory, Zane understands that life is filled with many ups and downs.

Over the course of a 20+ corporate career, Zane has had the unique opportunity to touch almost every facet of product innovation and development, corporate strategy, brand management, packaging, consumer insights, and strategic planning and futures.

Today, Zane is CEO of ZADA Strategy, a Richmond-based management consulting firm focused on the intersection of innovation, strategy, and the human experience to help clients grow brands, reimagine products, and transform business operations.

Not long ago, being a great leader meant leaving your desk and talking with your employees face-to-face, ensuring they’re seen and heard. Their purpose and value in showing up each day were honored and magnified. But today, even if your team is in the same zip code, you often spend more time on Zoom than in the same room. How do you cultivate trust and shared purpose on a digital screen?

In this episode, Stephen talks to his friend and business rockstar, Kim Thies. Kim leads an international team in her role at PayPal. She is Stephen’s kind of leader: clear, kind, and committed to improving the lives of everyone on her team. Join us as we discuss how to be a long-distance leader, an indispensable skill in this new era of distributed workforces.

About Kim Thies

Over the course of her career, Kim Thies has had a unique career path that has led her from startups to Fortune 500 firms, grassroots advocacy to international nonprofit leadership. This journey brought her to her current role at PayPal as the Director of Intelligence Automation for the risk organization. In this role, Kim leads a team of product, delivery, data, and engineering professionals across the globe to provide innovative data platforms, tools, and services. Kim’s passion is creating empowered, purpose-driven teams that deliver transformational business solutions and enduring social impact.

Our business lives are full of noise and distractions. Text, email, Slack threads, social media: the distractions are endless. It’s easy to lose focus and sight of what’s most important to get done and done well.

In this episode, we discuss clarity with Christopher R. Jones. Chris works with tech leaders to build high-performing teams. But Chris’s first principle is to know how to lead yourself. And that starts with clarity on what you want.

In business, as in life, we let things go unsaid. We don’t want to rock the boat or deal with a difficult conversation. We hope things will get better, but they rarely do. So how do you say what needs to be said so what needs to happen happens?

To answer this question, I spoke with Mindy Flanigan. Mindy runs Inspiring HR, a consultancy for small businesses. But Mindy is not your typical HR person. Her company’s slogan is “This is HR done differently.” Mindy is a straight shooter and believes business is a full-contact sport. Learn from Mindy so you can say what needs to be said.

In the seminal business book Good to Great, Jim Collins writes that great leaders “Look in the mirror and not out the window.” Others point fingers when things go wrong. But great leaders, Collins argues, take full accountability.

But looking in the mirror is difficult. It means being brutally honest with ourselves. So we avoid the mirror and make the same mistakes repeatedly. In this episode, I talk with my mentor, Joe Grant, a business coach, and consultant, about self-inquiry: how do we summon the courage to stare down our flaws so we can learn and grow?

Personal boundaries are essential to feeling safe, respected, whole, and complete. Yet so many of us struggle with defining and upholding our boundaries. The result? We run ourselves into the ground, saying yes to everything and everyone. Or we live with resentment and regret.

In this episode, I talk to my friend and coach, Sarah Elkins, about creating more beautiful boundaries in our business lives. Ever since I’ve known Sarah, I’ve respected how she communicates her boundaries: what works and what doesn’t work for her. Creating boundaries is an inside job. Join Sarah and me as we discuss how to create more beautiful boundaries: for more joy, energy, and alignment in our work lives.

We tell ourselves stories every day: that we’re not good enough. That we don’t have what it takes. That our desired future state will never come. These stories may be hard-wired into our minds, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be replaced with better stories that lead to better results and states of being.

In this episode, I talk to my friend and coach, Dave Robinson. Dave teaches clients how to get stronger: physically and mentally. Dave also teaches a methodology for working your stories, so your mental stories empower you, embolden you, and free you to be your best.

We admire grit in business: the stick-to-it-ness. Yet knowing when and how to let go and move on is essential for success and fulfillment. Letting go in business may mean letting go of a business relationship that’s served its purpose, an employee, or a business path that isn’t serving us.

In this episode, I talk to Stephen Jenkins, an end-of-life expert who helps his clients and their families with the ultimate journey of letting go. I ask Stephen how we can reconcile our disappointment, sadness, and fear so we can let go and move on.

Feeling seen by others is an evolutionary trait and a basic human need.

If the tribe didn’t recognize you, you’d risk being left behind, exiled, or called to fight. In other words, not being seen was a death sentence.

Our lives today may look different than our ancestors. But the primitive part of our brains hasn’t caught up with modernity. Not feeling seen evokes those ancient fears, which feel like inadequacy. Not measuring up. Not worthy. And can leave us empty and even broken.

In this episode, I talk to Hailey Thomas, a philanthropist, strategy, and mindset coach, on how to overcome those feelings of not being seen so we can own our voice, presence, and experiences—and step into the fullness of our light.

Humility is a virtue. Taking the air out of the tires of ego can help you think clearer and weigh the pros and cons of business decisions. But self-doubt can be crippling: to your business and your joy.

In this episode, I talk to the host of the Dropping Keys podcast and leadership coach Joel Morgan about self-doubt: how to work with doubting thoughts, how to keep going when you doubt you’ll be successful, and how to make peace with self-doubt.

I struggled for years to find my business voice. I would jump on LinkedIn to write a post … and get stage fright. I’d meet someone at a networking event and cringe when someone asked, “Tell me about yourself.” Bah! Panic City!

Finding the right words, tone, and brand swagger that’s authentic to you and engages your audience is essential for business life success. If you struggle with your business voice, then struggle no more.

In this episode, I talk to Amanda Catarzi, fractional Chief Marketing Officer and writer at Inkery Co., about finding and cultivating your business voice. Amanda’s badass approach helps her clients find their business voices to create authentic, engaging and empowering content.

Our models of business success are broken. Or at least terribly misguided.

We’ve overvalued the business of doing: the tactics, the hustle, the grind—and undervalued the business of being: the inner work required for outer success.

Join us as we have fascinating discussions with amazing people about the inner journeys in our business life careers: the moments of doubt, feelings of imposter syndrome, learning to rise again after defeat … and oh, so much more.
