This week we were delighted to be joined for the full hour by former North West Durham Member of Parliament Pat Glass. Pat was a former Shadow Minister, holding senior shadow ministerial positions in Transport, Europe and Education. As well as asking Pat such questions as how she felt as she first entered the House of Commons chamber, what advice she would give aspiring candidates who are considering a career as an MP and the best and worst thing about being an MP, Malcolm Clarke, Carl Quilliam and Pat Glass discuss the big news from politics this week.

We discuss Keir Starmer’s major speech where he outlined his 5 Missions for a Better Britain and Labour’s role in the Northern Ireland vote and the very real issues that surround the politics. We give our views on Sadiq Khan’s decision to fund free school meals for primary pupils and, on a lighter note to end proceedings, consider the issues, not least the madness, or Lee Anderson MP stepping into a boxing ring to duke it out with EU campaigner Steve Bray.

In this week’s episode of The Centre Left Politics Podcast, Carl Quilliam chairs a discussion with co-host Malcolm Clarke about Keir Starmer getting tough with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, confirming Corbyn will not be permitted to stand as a Labour Party candidate at the next General Election. Corbyn, however, has indicated he will seek the party’s nomination as Islington North candidate, the constituency he current represent as an Independent MP.

We then move on to discuss the dramatic plight of tory-led Thurrock Council, who are being forced to increase their council tax by 9.99%, receive a bailout from government to the tune of £180 million whilst severely cutting many services. Malcolm gives his views on how to make Labour Party selections more transparent and Carl challenges these ideas with some of his own. We finish this week’s edition of the podcast by discussing Nicola Sturgeon’s surprise announcement that she is to stand down as Scotland’s First Minister and SNP Leader, with a new leader to be announced on 27 March, discussing what this means for Scottish Labour and the future of the SNP.

We discuss the latest complaints against Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and whether the ministerial code of conduct has any real teeth. We talk strikes, whether Mick Lynch is winning the argument and take our weekly look at who came out ahead in PMQs. Why is no-one chanting ‘Oh Keir Starmer’ and does it matter? And should MPs have second jobs after it was revealed Boris Johnson has earned over £1 million since leaving Downing Street giving speeches. And if that’s not enough, are politicians diverse enough? And what are the latest polls saying? It’s all in this weeks show.
