Join Sakinah and Lerato (SALE) in this introductory episode to Motor-Speech Disorders (MSDs). In this first instalment of a trio of talks, the student speech-language pathologists explore dysarthria and apraxia in the adult population through definitions, types, clinical signs, and symptoms of these conditions. Following this, techniques for accurate identification of dysarthria and apraxia through standardised tools and instruments are analysed. Additionally, this includes differential diagnoses to aid in the accurate diagnosis of MSDs and distinguish their characteristics from similar conditions managed by speech-language pathologists. Lastly, proposed implications for misdiagnosis of MSDs are discussed, leading into the subsequent topic for the second instalment of SALE podcasts: the assessment of motor-speech disorders and consequently, the consideration requirements for speech-language pathologists.
Sakinah and Lerato conclude their triad of talks about Motor Speech Disorders with an insight into management and intervention of dysarthria and apraxia. The intervention approaches explored in the episode are mainly restorative and compensatory. Additionally, intervention is viewed from a holistic perspective with special considerations for the individual’s specific context through the addition of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Furthermore, intervention strategies are explored in both a multi-disciplinary team, as well as a caregiver and patient-centred perspective for home carryover.
In the second installment to the SALE series exploring Motor Speech Disorders (MSDs), Sakinah and Lerato take on assessment and considerations. As speech-language pathology students, they focus on the various assessments- both formal and informal- that are used for the diagnosis of MSDs. This includes assessment protocols and assessment procedures specific to dysarthria and apraxia in the adult population. Moreover, the SLP students contextualize these assessment measures to the South African context, to account for cultural and linguistic diversity in their environment. Following this, referrals and an multidisciplinary approach are briefly explained, in order to lead into the final episode of the podcast- which would focus on management and intervention of MSDs.
