Ari Wasserman is a national college football reporter for The Athletic. Like many, he believes the Oregon Ducks are the best team in the Pac-12. He also thinks that they are the conference’s worst candidate to break into the college football playoff. Why? Well, here’s a hint: Georgia. Wasserman joined Sports by Northwest this week to break down Oregon’s path to the CFP and discuss his recent column in The Athletic: Oregon’s dominance and why that’s an issue for the Pac-12 in the Playoff race. Here are some highlights from this week’s show: · Wasserman explain why he thinks both USC and UCLA would have stronger playoff chances than Oregon if one of them wins out · Why the Ducks did the right thing by scheduling Georgia, even though it’s hurting them now · Discussing Bo Nix’s Heisman candidacy and why it’s not actually all that surprising · Oregon’s final three (or four) games could give them a boost in the playoff chase, but they have to win them first Subscribe to Sports by Northwest anywhere you listen to podcasts. The Ducks are in the CFP hunt with a surprise Heisman contender, the Beavers are back in the top 25 and the Blazers are exciting and (maybe?) good. Oh, and the Thorns just secured their third NWSL championship. If existential dread is the underpinning of a sports fan’s existence, Oregonians don’t know what to do with themselves right now. Everything is going — knock on wood — well. Weird, right? That’s the theme of this week’s episode of Sports by Northwest, with sports editor Joel Odom joining host Bill Oram to discuss the overwhelming positivity across the local sports landscape. Here are some highlights from this week’s show: · With the first CFP rankings out, Bill and Joel discuss how plausible Oregon’s path to the playoff really is. · The Beavers will face Washington amid an “atmospheric river” in Seattle on Friday night. Who does that favor? · The good vibes extend to flag football. Joel tells us about his 10-year-old son’s weekend triumph. · Producer Andrew Theen steps out of the shadows to gush about the unabashed joy Shaedon Sharpe has brought to the Blazers. · We introduce new theme music from Portland band Haystack Rock that you won’t be able to stop humming once you hear it. It’s a big week for the Portland Trail Blazers, who won their season opener on Wednesday night. There are some names in the sports world that deserve to be said, and remembered, forever. Jackie Stiles fits that description. On the latest episode of Sports by Northwest, columnist Bill Oram and sports editor Joel Odom chat with the women's basketball hall of famer about her life and her career. Stiles is the subject of a new documentary called "The Jackie Stiles Story." The documentary is streaming online but it will be shown live at the Portland Film festival starting next week. Her story, in its totality, is incredible. Stiles was an NCAA legend who held the all-time scoring record for years. She was a cult figure (think Steph Curry meetings Pistol Pete) who drew massive crowds to her games in small town Kansas and then at Southwest Missouri State in college. She went on to a brief career with the now-defunct Portland Fire of the WNBA before a series of devastating injuries ended her career far too soon. Some highlights from this week's show: -Bill and Joel discuss the U.S. Soccer investigation -They discuss Jackie Stiles' legendary performance and place in basketball history -Jackie Stiles interview (starts at 12:00) Subscribe to Sports by Northwest anywhere you listen to podcasts to hear the latest episodes.
