Welcome to From A Cellist’s Perspective! The podcast dedicated to tackling the big issues facing young professionals and students trying to make their way in the classical music industry.
Do you know what control you have over the music you compose when you allow it to be used by an advertising agency or for a film? Or maybe you've spent a week in a recording studio working toward someone's album, but how much do you get when it's played on the radio or on spotify?
It's never fun looking at our art as a business but how else are we supposed to make a viable living from the thing we pour our heart and soul into? We need to make sure we can protect ourselves by understanding our contracts, getting signed up to a union and knowing who pulls the monetary strings.

Today we are really giving those dark self-doubting narratives a safe space to land with coach and mentor Tatiana Bejinari.Those of you who have read my blog will know that I refer to my own inner critic as the Kraken, wrapping its tenticles around me like a boat lost at sea desperately trying to pull me under. But how often do we have the courage to look at its origins? To work out why the Kraken chose your boat and whether it's pulling you under out of fear, protection or something more? Tatiana and I discuss the benefits of coaching and mentoring, the difference between criticism and feedback and how getting uncomfortable with your own thoughts and feelings can help you unlock your potential and get that caeer you've always wanted.

You're burnt out again... You promised yourself that this time, it would be different but here we are and that's okay! You're not alone.
We all feel this need especially within the music world but in society more generally that constantly working is a sign of success. But it's just not sustainable. If you're anything like me, you've been wiped out more times than you care to admit and like a dutiful hamster, you get back on that wheel as soon as you can to run like you did before (if not harder to catch up) before crash, you're back on the sofa with multiple colds and even simple conversation is just exhausting.
So how do we get off the wheel? How can we start to look inside of who we are as people in order to work out why we keep doing this and how best we can refocus and allow ourselves to breathe?
This week I am joined by the brilliant life and business coach, Georgia Elia as we talk about the most common types of burnout, how we got there as well as some amazing exercises that you can try as soon as you've finished listening!

For this episode I am joined by the award winning saxophonist and composer, and high school friend, Emma Johnson! Celebrating the vinyl release of her first album with her Gravy Boat. We settle down to talk about composition, self-criticism and combating writer's block before things become really passionate as we discuss our own journey's through state school music education and what needs to be done to make sure children of all socio-economic backgrounds have the opportunity to access music lessons, teachers and role models.

On this episode we're exploring the accessibility of classical music concerts. All too often people are put off from coming to concerts because they're not regarded as fun steeped in traditions and unwritten rules like clapping in between movements and no talking. Step a toe out of line and you're in for a very aggressive shhh from a few rows back often louder than the original nose could ever have been. But why have we made them like that? We've all heard the tales of Mozart's concerts where people cheered/ booed/ brought food and drink and had an absolute blast. What if classical music could go back to that? Would it really be so terrible?
This week I'm joined by Through The Noise, a concert series bringing classical music into the most unlikely of places.
