The nation of Israel, as individuals, were only looking out for themselves. They were not worshiping God as He had called them to do. Many were getting wealthy at the expense of the poor. They were only looking out for themselves and not for the rest of the people. It is not much different with the church in this country. We are sinful and prone to wonder away from the Lord. Israel had an abundance, but God was going to take it away from them. The leadership was not doing its job so God was going to remove all those in leadership and give them children as leaders. There is something in us that longs for the perfect city. This longing is captured in stories that tell of such cities like Atlantis, El Dorado, Rivendell and Wakanda. Places like Xanadu that are hidden away waiting to be discovered. This is because God has made us to desire such a city. Israel had such a city during her golden days, Jerusalem. Yet Israel did not appreciate what God had given to her and she abased herself before the world and her God. She gave up her dignity and righteousness in exchange for things she valued more: bribes and other trinkets. Her waywardness causes God to act, but His actions might surprise us.

In the letter to the Hebrews we learn that the Christian faith is the race worth running. Every race has a starting point and so too with our faith. In this sermon, Rev. We have looked at how the gospel transforms our lives in the area of marriage. So too, the gospel forms our understanding of the relationship between parents and children. The family is the foundation of all of society. Children of believing parents are part of God's covenant. They belong to Jesus and are to brought up by the parents in the training and instruction of the Lord. Children are under the obligation of honoring their parents by being obedient. Parents are to teach their children the things of the Lord, model the things they are teaching in their own lives and live them out with their children, leaving the outcome to the Lord.

People often assume wrongly that suffering is a sign of punishment. In fact the God of the Bible displays His power through weakness, His glory through suffering. This is what we see preeminently in the cross of Christ, and it is a pattern that we see refracted in the ministry of Paul. As Christ was willing to suffer to bring us to glory, so Paul was glad to suffer imprisonment and martyrdom on behalf of the gentiles to see them brought to glory by faith in Christ. The gospel gives us both the proper perspective to understand own adversity and the worthy aim to persevere through it, to see others glorified in Christ.

The Olympics are a good example of how national pride can cause one group of people to feel superior to other nations. La historia de Jonás termina abruptamente con un cliffhanger, sin una conclusión a la narrativa. ¿Por qué? Para dejar el dedo apuntando a nosotros, el lector. Y debemos ver que esta misma actitud de Jonás mora en nosotros. Tenemos el mismo sesgo de autoservicio. ¿Cómo? Tendemos a evaluar el mundo y las cosas adentro, incluyendo otras personas, con un ojo a nuestro propio bienestar. Lo que es conveniente a nosotros, lo que sirve a mi y a mi familia y a mi gente. Lo bueno es lo que me sirve prosperar, y lo malo es lo que amenaza tal prosperidad. Por tanto, categorizamos a otras personas nuestros enemigos si son de otros países, otras etnicidades, u otras perspectivas políticas… solo porque parece que están retando nuestra visión de la prosperidad. Y luego, ya categorizados como enemigos, concluimos que no tienen dignidad, y que no merecen nuestra piedad. Casi igual como Jonás, sentamos a gustos delante de una pantalla ansiosamente esperando noticias sobre la caída de nuestros enemigos… mientras nos ponemos tan tristes y enojados cuando nuestro celular se cae al suelo y la pantalla rompe. ¿Quién es Jonás? Tu y yo. ¿Qué es el problema? Nuestro egoísmo profundo y nuestro sesgo de autoservicio. Todo esto es evidencia en contra de nosotros… el veredicto es claro: no amamos apropiadamente lo que debemos amar porque estamos contaminados con el egoísmo. Pero no solo vemos esto sobre nosotros, también vemos como Dios revela su corazón puro en este pasaje.
